Summer I feel the same not very organised etc etc. I wouldn't worry I am sure it will all work out. I am also hoping to borrow quite a few things from friends and family (all helps to save a few quid). Don't let it get you down. Write a list of everything you need / want then whether you have to buy or are borrowing. It will help you feel like you are actively doing something.

rosmerta · 11/09/2008 11:53

ladyt you're right, I had gallstones & the pain from that was far far worse than labour!

summer I agree with Emma, making lists really does make you feel like you're getting something done!

good plan, emma - I don't feel like I'm doing anything either - which is quite scary when I find I've only actually got 13 weeks to go - aaaaaagh!!!!!

emmanbump · 11/09/2008 12:01

Beans Don't stress.

I am a real last min dot com sort of girl. But a list is a god send otherwise you start forgetting what you have got what you need etc etc and it all gets a bit overwelming. Get one of two things from the list each week and you will be sorted. Also means that if anyone says is there anything you want for when the baby comes you can give them something off the list

SummerLightning · 11/09/2008 12:11

thanks everyone, we have arranged to go round to the guy who has offered to give us some stuff, this has made me feel better, as DH has been saying we can't go shopping until we know what stuff we need!! And have e-mailed a very local nursery that would be ideal. Hope they don't come back and tell me that I needed to do it before I even conceived!! In fact I found the whole e-mail very scary, eg talking in it about "my child", arghghh, that's a bit too "real"

ladyT I have also heard that kidney stones are more painful than labour!! Fortunately I have not had them.

I do have a list and it only has about 3 things on it! Maybe I should have "figure out what I need as well as what's on this list" written down too!

rosmerta · 11/09/2008 12:36

One other thing is not to buy too many clothes, especially if its your first, a small starter pack will probably be enough. We bought loads & then everyone bought us more! We ended up changing a lot of things for bigger sizes & different seasons.

reban · 11/09/2008 12:55

i would second that rosmerta. REally all you will need is a starter pack because people get very excited with first children you will more than likely be showered with gifts. Also you may have a large or quick growing baby. My eldest was 6lb 5oz born and went through sizes tiny baby, small baby, newborn and onto 0-3 in about 4-5 weeks but my nephew was born too big for newborn!

I have still failed to upload any photos as i keep crashing the site! Anyone else had problems adding photos? Hope its not a comment on how bad i really look!

Verso · 11/09/2008 13:13

summer we asked DD's nursery about a place for the Bump about three months ago and they were fully booked for next year already . It was only after a LOT of begging/pleading "oh - well, it looks like we'll have to move DD right NOW then so she has time to settle into a new nursery if you haven't got space for the baby..." etc that we got an apologetic "of course we can squeeze the Bump in" letter and all was sorted. Waiting lists are LONG - so def not too early to be looking.

Sorry - have glossed over thread. LT glad GTT was an ok experience. Mine is on Monday.

zoejeanne · 11/09/2008 13:18

Maybe a silly question - but what is a GTT? I'm pleased that LadyT's went well, and good luck to Verso though, despite me being a bit dim

EffiePerine · 11/09/2008 13:18

Verso: dod you finally manage to book your GTT then?

def agree with the not buying too many clothes/other stuff bit. Really all you need is enough for you and the baby in hosptial and when you first come home. Anything else can be bought afterwards (unless you live in the middle of nowhere and/or don't have anyone to go to the shop for you, of course).

Verso · 11/09/2008 13:18

P.S. Re labour pain - IME natural labour pains are manageable - probably because they build up very gradually over a period of time and I think your body produces endorphins or something to help you cope with the pain. However the ones you get after being 'augmented' with a syntocinon drip are excruciating...

But - they stop INSTANTLY the baby is born, which is incredible.

After-pains are weird - partly because no one warns you about them. (Cramping a bit like period pains when you breastfeed, as your uterus shrinks back to normal size.)

Oh and nothing is worse than the colicky bowel cramps and internal pains I had after my 3rd degree tear. It went on for about four days before I was readmitted to hospital and was FAR FAR worse than any of the labour pains I'd experienced. (Disclaimer: this kind of after effect is VERY RARE so I don't want to worry anyone!!)

Verso · 11/09/2008 13:19

GTT is a glucose tolerance test. Yes, Effie, I finally got some help from a lovely lady in the antenatal unit who sorted the appointment out for me.

EffiePerine · 11/09/2008 13:19

(LadyT: do you see me not answering on the number of slings question? )

Olipop · 11/09/2008 13:27

Hi ...feeling very very sleepy today....
SummerLightening - I went to view a nursery when I was about 25 weeks with my DS and they looked at me and said that I'd left it a bit late...I was stunned! Although I did get him a place at a lovely nursery where he is very happy but best to be prepared!
On fast labours, a friends sister had a super fast (I think it was sub 1 hour or something crazy) and when they tried to give her the baby to hold she couldn't physically move. Her body went into a kind of shock as it hadn't had time to get into the situation and she simply couldn't lift her arms!! Poor girl! She soon recovered but I think that backs up what some of the other girls were saying about your body taking time to realise it's in labour.

SummerLightning · 11/09/2008 13:35

OH well will wait and see what they say....there is a nursery near my work that I think doesn't need masses of notice but a) it doesn't have as good reputation as the one near my house and b) if it's near my work then it's MY job EVERY day to take them there. Which would wind me up after a while I'm sure. So one near home so we can take it in turns would be lovely!

mibbes · 11/09/2008 15:41

Beans I've had several episodes of 'squits' as you put it I think am far more sensitive to various foods than before PG - this is also what I have put Monday sickness down to.

jollybear have a lovely holiday

well I have had an eventful day as had some brown blood this morning - wasn't overly worried as felt the baby move a few times but as am rhesus -ve they wanted me in for checks. Baby was checked with a fetal heart monitor (which s/he kept kicking off !) and I had bloods done so going back at 4 to get results and see if I need anti-D early (am booked in for it on Mon but it is supposed to be administered 72 hours after any bleed). While I was in triage a lady in labour came in (she has muddled up triage and labout suite !) yikes !!!

Will catch up properly later - no time now.

jumpjockey · 11/09/2008 16:13

SummerLightning - did your yoga class last night involve staring at a candle at the end, and quick plug for a lady who does pregnancy massages? If so, I think we were at the same class! I was wearing a vest top, glasses and have short hair. Last night was only my second one though so I'm not sure who everyone is yet. How exciting - MN and real life collide

Re GTT - I've got a test in a week or so where I have to drink lucozade an hour beforehand but the receptionist said I just have it on top of my normal breakfast - is that true or is it a fasting test?

Olipop · 11/09/2008 16:13

ooh good luck mibbes...brave girl for not going all scaredy..

reban · 11/09/2008 16:17

Mibbes hope everything is ok xx

jumpjockey · 11/09/2008 16:23

Oooh mibbes sorry I missed your post - sounds as if you're feeling quite reassured by things - what a kicky baby you must have! Hope the results came through ok.

SummerLightning · 11/09/2008 16:29

JJ yes, same class! It was my first class yesterday. Were you sitting kind of straight in front of the teacher?

If so I was sat round to the right of you by a tall girl with blond hair, I am short with shortish dark hair.. I didn't really catch anyones names, there was so many people!! I think i shall be going again, as v convenient for me!

For the GTT test I was told to drink the lucozade and nothing else an hr beforehand, so I guess it depends when your appt is, mine is at 10am, so I will probably slot in some brekkie at 8 or so.

mibbes hope all is ok, good luck!

EffiePerine · 11/09/2008 16:32

well for the GTT I was told to fast for 12 hours beforehand so I would check! Then they took a fasting blood test, gave me the stuff (ick) and I cam back in a couple of hours for the second test.

EffiePerine · 11/09/2008 16:32

mibbes hope all is OK

jumpjockey · 11/09/2008 16:33

SummerLightning yep, that's me! I'm away next week but will come and say hello properly the week after

jumpjockey · 11/09/2008 16:36

Sigh, this place moves too fast for me! Effie re GTT the receptionist gave me an appt at 8.45 and was going on about did I want it later as I had to drink lucozade beforehand - well if it involves fasting as well then surely the earlier the better? Though nobody mentioned having to come back for a second hit - will definitely have to find out what's going on it wasn't listed on the treatment schedule as specifically GTT, just some kind of lucozade challenge?!
