hana, drop hints for a new nightie to whom...if you mean dh, hints really don't work. I have to spell it out to him. I. would. like. a. new. nightie. for. the. hospital. IF (big if) he actually acted on it, he would call me from the shop and say, what do you want? Shall I get the cheapest one? .

obs - shirt and tie sound very cute (and very posh...ahhhhhh). I was up early (4.30-6.30) but I went back to bed for 2 hours! Why are you not panicking? Can you send some calm my way.

I have a cleaner here at the moment. Poor thing...she has not got further than the kitchen...and said it will take a long time to get this house clean !!! (But she reckons she can do it over 6 weeks!). Oh well, the little mites should be here by then. I don't think she's much older than ds! She looks about 18 but she is very, very thorough.

MerryMarigold · 16/09/2008 10:57

Choco, forgot to say my first NCT class freaked me out a bit. Made it all real, felt very emotional and scared afterwards. Plus everyone knew loads and had really planned things and I knew nothing (tho you would not have been in that position) so I felt like a total lemon. I made a really good friend out of it though.

32 weeks today - yipppeeeeee.

vbab78 · 16/09/2008 11:03

Couple of questions ...

  1. Do I need to take towels for me and baby to the hospital? Can't honestly remember what I did with DS.
  2. I've bought a few "flavour neutral" sleep suits for baby at hospital up to 9lb. Now on looking at them (to wash & pack hospital bag) wonder if I should exchange them for the next size as DS was 9lb 4oz. WHAT YOU THINK?

Thanks.

LackaDAISYcal · 16/09/2008 11:59

vbab, I think it depends on the hospital. I took some when I was in having DD, but the hospital provided some. They were teeny tiny and practically threadbare so I'll be taking some again this time.......nice purple ones bought specially so they won't show up any stains!

Re babygros; I'd go for Next ones which are up to 1 mo old/10lbs. You should get some wear out of newborn size, even if bub is up there in the weight range though.....unless of course baby is 10lbs plus

Betti · 16/09/2008 12:23

mummynic I'm also due 5th Nov and have had the same names suggested. LOL at how original people think they are!!!

Went for tour of hospital on sunday. I went alone as dh was minding dcs. Not only was everyone else with their partners, they were all also first time mums. I felt like a real old timer. Thought of you Merry as we had a look round SCBU and there was a lady there with her twins. So gorgeous!

Finally managed to get through to maternity allowance dept after 2 weeks of trying!. They are very short staffed which is why it has taken so long to process my claim (2months so far). It has now been sent to another office who have promised to call me to let me know why I haven't received a payment yet. I won't sit by the phone waiting!

suiledonn · 16/09/2008 12:24

vbab - I would take my own towels. As Lackadaisy says even if the hospital provides some they aren't going to be great. I love an extra large bath towel to cover my ample curves!

The size of baby clothes is causing me a dilemma too. I have loads of newborn vests and babygros which lasted a while with dd as she was only 6lbs. They only go up to 7lb6oz but the next size I have 0-3 months seem huge. I'll just pack a few of each and dh can bring whatever I need. The snowsnuit I bought is the Next up to 10lbs size as I will want to get some wear out of it. I bought a little outfit for baby to wear going home and I went for the new born size. I just think that even if this baby is bigger than dd it is unlikely to be more than 1.5lb bigger. (wishful thinking maybe)

ruthosaurus · 16/09/2008 12:51

Hi Mummynic and welcome - this is where you kiss the rest of your life goodbye and become addicted to MN! Seriously, catch up every 4 hours or so or you end up with a post like this:

Merry - it's a Widgey - of course! Thanks so much! Fortune cookie, my bottom: what was I thinking? OMG, 10th Oct is close, isn't it? You must be getting excited as well as nervous but IKWYM about the state of the house - I have just refused to meet my MW for a home visit next time, ostensibly because I'll still be at work but largely because I don't want her to have to get her shoes dirty visiting my hovel. Maybe some more decorating will be done by then, eh?

8+1 to go til EDD, 4+3 until I finish work! Not that I'm counting the days or anything.

Obs aww, cute! I bet you anything he says "It was okay but I don't think I'll bother going back tomorrow" when you pick him up...

Heartmum, good for your stepmum - I hope she gives your dad a right talking to. Men. Speaking of which, I told DH about your DH's mishap with the bike, in a cautionary tals sort of way, and the first thing he asked was "how many stitches?".

Knackered today, BH all yesterday evening and then woken up with a hearty kicking at 5. What a well-behaed child I'm going to have. Hope I'm not to knacked for "Parentcraft" class tonight (and what exactly was wrong with calling them Antenatal? Parentcraft sounds like we'er all going to sit round with stickytape and glitter, or macrame or something). Do they show really scary birth films? I'm not good with gore on screen.

ruthosaurus · 16/09/2008 12:52

PS, hey chocorange!

MonkeyMargot · 16/09/2008 12:58

Hello everyone. I was definitely planning on taking my own (dark grey) towels into hospital with me. Can't think of anything worse than being handed something that looks like a flannel - need a big one!
Just parted with £250 at the dentist. It makes we want to weep it really does.
Re. babygros, I hadn't considered this before, but guess it makes sense to pack newborn and the next size, just in case it's a bruiser. I was 9lb so you never know..
Choc I've got my first NCT next week - it's a 2-day intensive thing. Did you feel as though you learnt a lot of stuff? And more importantly, did you meet any nice people?
Ooh - the bean is booting me right in the ribs. Its getting harder to eat big meals (which is annoying - I keep persisting though!)

Pinkglow · 16/09/2008 13:00

Hiya guys

Ive been on MN for a while but only just found this bit. Im due the 9th November and am having a boy.

Funny reading the comments as I look ready to drop now so am looking at shocked faces when I say I have 8 weeks to go kinda wishing it away though and thank goodness I start maternity leave soon thats all I can say

MerryMarigold · 16/09/2008 13:04

LOL saurus at midwife getting shoes dirty visiting house. People always come round and say, "Shall I take my shoes off?" I virtually jump down their throats: NOOOOOOOOOO. LEAVE THEM ON! I can imagine them looking down at the state of their socks after walking down the hallway and I .

MerryMarigold · 16/09/2008 13:06

margot, keep persisting! despite twins my appetite has not waned and I seem to be able to stuff as much/ more in than ever. (eg. 4 slices of bread, fried egg and peanut butter for lunch and a yoghurt).

MerryMarigold · 16/09/2008 13:07

welcome pinkglow. You are in good company here as we have a pinkali and a pinkyminky!

Afternoon everyone. Just having a token lunch break - I finish next Tuesday so have loads of work to do.

Thanks for updating the stats list - I did have a go at it but struggled to format it!! I'd have done it in no time if it were Excel (I'm an accountant)!!

I'm definitely going to get a V pillow / Widgey - which is best? From what I can see the Widgey is smaller so is it still useful as an ante natal cushion?

MonkeyMargot · 16/09/2008 13:38

merry Can't believe you have only 4 weeks to wait til 10th Oct! And good effort with the eating! I applaud you. Though I've already had scrambled egg on toast for brekkie, rich teas for 11's, tuna sarnie and yoghurt for lunch, I'm now eagerly awaiting Sainsbury's delivery which will include a pack of OREO'S!!!!!!!! Yipee!! Am currently watching the X Factor with a cuppa - loving it. Its weird how the arrival of Cheryl Cole makes Danni Minogue look totally plastic and ugly.

Welcome Pinkglow. Take heed - ignore this thread at your peril - leave for a day and you'll be totally lost - there's an awful lot of chat going on here.

ruthosaurus · 16/09/2008 14:13

Hi Pinkglow (love your name!) and welcome - you may never leave...

Re: Antenatal classes, we were going to get the NCT ones but chickened out due to the £££. Therefore we are going to the 2 hours a week NHS ones. I can't WAIT to do the tour though as I really want to see the place - I just don't want to watch a replay of Alien as I'm trying to retain a healthy sense of denial here. Actually, I am really really scared about going tonight and hope they don't make us do an icebreaker or introduce each other or anything.

Weird experience corner: I had to fill in a mailing list form at the community centre where I go to see the midwife and I asked what it was for and was told "It's so you can use the centre". I said "So I can see the midwife?", thinking this was a bit rum as that's where I have to go as there's no longer a service at my doc's, and the girl said, "No, so you can go on the mailing list". I asked what it was for, and apparently it's for if I want to go on day trips to Alton Towers and Skegness. Anyway, she wouldn't let me NOT complete it and stood over me as I filled it in in my worst handwriting, pointing out that my DOB was wrong (it wasn't, that is my real age). By this time I just wanted to get out in one piece, but I think she'd just been told to sign as many people up as possible, dead or alive. There was a bit about giving permission for photos of your child to be put up on the walls and I tried to tell her, politely, that I haven't decided whether or not I'm sending this baby to the community centre nursery, let alone whether I want it's picture up on the wall, and she got really huffy with me and said, "Well, sign it anyway". So I bit her and ran away (not really).

I'm now hiding under my desk at work in case she comes looking for me...

ChocOrange05 · 16/09/2008 14:35

Afternoon all

Merry I know what you mean about the NCT class - it was good but also freaked me out a LOT - this is becoming so real!

I met some nice people although it was the first class and I'm not sure how many of us will be left at the end though, there were a few women there at 36 and 37 weeks and there are 4 more weeks of courses!!

Hi Pinkglow welcome. PS - shouldn't you be called Blueglow as you are having a boy?

Vbab good point on the towels - although we are planning a HB I have a hospital bag (half) ready too so might throw a few old, dark (!) towels in there too.

Monkey - so you've noticed it too, Dannii Minogue looks v old and plastic next to Cheryl, who, by the way I hate for being so bloody beautiful and seemingly nice too - how dare she!!! But WTF is she still doing with Ashely Cole?!?!

Oh god - 6+3 to go - I am counting down now!! Is anyone else petrified?!?!

MonkeyMargot · 16/09/2008 15:07

Choc I am absolutely terrified too. I read the Gina Ford book on holiday, and instead of instilling me with confidence, it's had precisely the opposite effect. I feel really confused about loads of stuff. e.g.Swaddling versus sheets versus grobags? Routine versus not? How do you change a nappy?! How do you heat up a bottle of expressed milk?
Not to mention the birth bit. Saw some lovely photos (not) of a woman "crowning" in the NHS book I was given. ALmost put me off my Oreos...
And yes - WTF is Cheryl still doing with Ashley Cole indeed.

ceebee74 · 16/09/2008 15:10

Afternoon all

Just been to the dentist so am 'working from home' for the rest of the afternoon . Dentist said that my broken tooth is fine - it will need re-filling and sorting but the govt guidelines are that pg women shouldn't have that type of work done so he left it up to me to make the choice - he said no harm will come of it if I left for 3 months so I think I will leave it - maybe the pain of childbirth will mean that I feel able to deal better with the pain of a filling

Welcome Pinkglow - was going to say exactly what Choc said about you being called 'Blueglow' Is this your first baby?

Still managing to eat big meals here too - only it does bring on quite bad heartburn if I eat too much just before bedtime!

Chocorange - as I am a die-hard Chelsea fan, what is wrong with Cheryl Cole still being with Ashley?? Good taste in men if you ask me

I can't remember who asked about Braxton Hicks? I never had them with DS and not had them so far with this pg either so I don't think that every pg woman gets them. My bump does get very tight sometimes (usually after a big meal) and feels a little uncomfortable but certainly never had any pain.

Right better crack on with the work I brought home to do - just turfed DH out of his office so I could do it so if he catches me on here...........

ceebee74 · 16/09/2008 15:12

In fact, one of the jobs I have to do this afternoon is type up my own confirmation of maternity leave/pay

MonkeyM, with ds I never was a Mn'er. I never really talked to anyone of what was to come. I remember that dh and I bought ds home from the hospital. We were on our own. I think we were quite freaked out. Like " what do we do now ?". Scarey, for first timers.

But the real beauty is, that you are here on MN, and we can help alleviate your fears. Do you just fel a bit overwhelmed - becasue that IS normal.
Or are there specific things that we can help you with ?
