Hi everyone

Had my 16 week midwife appointment today. Heard fetal heartbeat....ahhhh so reassuring to hear !

Midwife told me beat was 150 beats .. I take it that is normal?

Didn't seem to sound as fast as DS was!

Any old wives tales as to difference in beats for boys and girls???????

V1KK1M · 21/10/2008 13:22

I think the old wives tale is >140bmp for a girl and

V1KK1M · 21/10/2008 13:24

Although at my nuchal scan the heat rate was 164bpm and they said they thought it was a boy so who knows!!! I can't wait to find out (roll on 27th November)!!!!

countrylover · 21/10/2008 13:29

Can I ask a question? I'm new to this thread although I've been lurking for several weeks.

Due 15th April, one DS 3 years.

When did you have your first midwife appointment? I registered with the doctor as being pregnant when six weeks. Then had a scan at the hospital at 12 weeks so I know I'm in the system. But as yet no contact with a midwife. Is this normal? I'm sure with DS I saw a midwife before my scan.

I have of course called and left a message at the end of last week but no one has got back to me. I didn't want to hassel them if I'm to wait until 16 weeks anyway.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 21/10/2008 13:32

usually you have a 'booking in' appointment with the midwife before your scan.
obviously you are in the system if you had a scan but that does seem weird.
did you not meet with the midwife after your scan?

countrylover · 21/10/2008 13:35

No, it's run differently here which is a good thing (well, I thought it was but the lack of contact is proving otherwise!)

We have a team of midwives who run via the surgery. The idea being that you get one on one care throughout your pregnancy and birth. It's a scheme operated out of Kings in London and in theory should provide a much better level of consistent care. IN THEORY!

BinkyB · 21/10/2008 14:00

Hi everyone and especially newbies and Barbarella - great news about your triplets! Glad to have another multi-mum on here too.

I allowed myself a peek at twin buggies at the weekend - all quite complicated really! Some of them are hilarious. I was having a 'how will I manage' moment and once again, Mumsnet Mums saved me - was looking in a twin buggy thread and one Mum told how she had a 3yo and 2yo and THEN had triplets. So she has a triplet buggy with 2 of the trips and the 2yo in it, the 3rd triplet in a sling, and the 3yo is on a trike attached to the buggy with a rope! Made me cry laughing to imagine them, also made me realise Mums are amazing and can cope with anything and we'll be no different.

Bump comparisons - am 16+2 and have a definite bump now, plus boobs are up 2 cup sizes already (from humble beginnings ). Got to hear their heartbeats last night which was amazing, GP made me chuckle when she said "well can't be certain it wasn't the same one twice but I think I've heard lots of heartbeats - maybe you're having a litter"!!!

So lots of laughs keeping me going despite the endless puking - yuck.

Glad to hear everyone else is doing so well
BB x

purlease · 21/10/2008 14:09

countrylover, where I am you have booking in appointment followed by scan around 12 weeks. Then nothing until 20 weeks -anomaly scan. After that it is every 2 weeks alternating between hospital and clinic.

SpringySunshine · 21/10/2008 15:04

Just got back from my first scan. I've been dated at 15+3, which gives me a due date of 11th April - 1 day earlier than I'd been told previously, so I'll update the list.

DP came with me & were both pleasantly surprised at how straight-forward everything was - in & out of the hospital (scan, bloods, etc) in about an hour with no problems.

The scan was beautiful - I'd half convinced myself I'd had a MMC, so to see a baby in there was amazing. I've not heard a heartbeat or anything yet, so it really was the first concrete proof. The little thing was so wriggly - it took the sonographer a good while to get a good shot of the head, because it kept putting its bum in the way. Definitely DP's child, then

Got a beautiful picture now, which I'm scanning & sending to pretty much everyone I've ever met! It's waving at us like a right proper poser. The most amazing thing was probably seeing its heart, with the individual chambers & stuff. So strange to think that I'm growing all of that!

We had a medical student in the room with us & it was the first scan she'd ever seen, so I think we got a bit of a better view than we may have done anyway, because she wanted to learn from it too.

I asked if there was any sign of gender to be guessed at yet, but she wouldn't even begin to consider it, which is fair enough I suppose.

The only bad thing is that my urine sample came back testing positive for nitrates, which suggests an infection. I'm allergic to all antibiotics, so I'm hoping it's nothing. I've not been experiencing any pain from weeing, but need to go immediately after I've just finished. I assumed that was normal, but perhaps not? Anybody know anything about it? I also know that cranberry juice is meant to help with urinary infections, so I'll get some of that - any other suggestions are definitely welcome!

I hope everyone else is doing well & enjoying their 'glow' (I'm not sure that's the most accurate word for the experience, but maybe that's just me...)

BabyBolat · 21/10/2008 15:39

Hi all

Countrylover - to be honest have no idea what to expect but I had my booking appointment and scan together at 12 weeks (which turned out to be 14 weeks with my revised date), a 16 week check up with doctor and then I pretty much see someone (doctor or midwife) every 4 weeks (20 week scan, 24 week check up, 28 week bloods, etc etc!)

Springeysunshine your scan sounds amazing, I can't wait for my 20 week scan to see the heart etc - I am really worried tho as I don't want to find out the sex but will I be able to see it?

My 16 week check up heartbeat was really strong and fast and did sound a bit like galloping which supports my theory that it is a girl! It's really strange I am so sure it's a girl (despite actually wanting to have a boy initially) that every time I think about the baby it is always as a girl, I look only at girls clothes and girly cots that if the doctor says congratulations it's a boy in April, I am not sure how I will react!!!

BinkyB - prams scare me and I only have one to think about!!

purlease · 21/10/2008 16:25

I don't think it is that easy to see what sex the baby is so unless you want to know, you are unlikely to find out. I have always been against finding out the sex but I'm feeling very curious this time around - have a 3 year old DD so would quite like a boy. Won't be disappointed either way once it's healthy.

BellaMummy · 21/10/2008 18:03

SpringySunshine, we are due on the same date - 11 April!

Glad you're scan was lovely. Mine was much clearer this time than it was for DD - different hospital, and they told me this time at St Georges that the machine they scanned me on was the very latest. It was just SO clear, and even though I've been through it before, seeing that little heart beating away was just as amazing this time round.

I think needing to go again straight after weeing is a sign of infection, but I've only ever had one in my whole life, so I'm no expert. Maybe ask a pharmacist because there are sachets of stuff you mix with water and drink, and they may be safe for you. Hope it's nothing!

SpringySunshine · 21/10/2008 18:27

BellaMummy - race you to the finish line! Where about in the country are you? I'm in Sheffield

Good idea about the pharmacist - I'll go in & ask tomorrow. It just seems odd because I've had only the one before too, but it was really unpleasant & painful, whereas now it's just a constant discomfort of needing to wee, which I can mostly ignore. I'd much rather that than anything else - especially as medication is so limited by pregnancy as well as by my allergy. If I can be given something that makes me feel like I can walk at a great speed without weeing myself though, that'd be very helpful :P

mathsmummy27 · 21/10/2008 18:58

Springy if it is urinary tract infection you want to sort it asap, as it can get worse rapidly and even spread to your kidneys, which is agony. You need loads of fluids, try and hold your wee as long as you can before you go (otherwise you have a little reservoir left in there all the time, which perpetuaes the infection) and possibly the sodium citrate sachets as well, which you can get from a supermarket or chemists.

On a slightly different note - I ordered some beautiful maternity wear from Blooming Marvellous which arrived today (very fast) and I am SO pleased with it - i feel like a princess again. They have a sale on and with mumsnet 10% off as well it's really very reasonable .

babypringle · 21/10/2008 19:10

hi everyone ... had my 16wk check with the midwife yesterday and my blood pressure was high - 130/90, which is quite a bit higher than my first appt. Happened with my DS, but not until the 3rd trimester and then nothing actually came of it. But this time the midwife wants to see me again in two weeks and is talking about medication etc if it hasn't come down so I'm feeling really pissed off. I know my bp gets worse the second I walk into the surgery. I've been told to rest lots which is sooo easy with a two year old .

SpringySunshine · 21/10/2008 22:51

I bought a few things on Blooming Marvellous tonight in order to treat myself - I figure I'm celebrating a positive scan after I'd been so scared it'd be terrible news. Any excuse.

babypringle I don't have any advice about blood pressure that isn't really obvious, so I'll just send you my best wishes that it's nothing to be really worrying about. I'm sure a lot of it, as you say, is the stress of actually being in the surgery in the first place.

conkertree · 22/10/2008 09:52

my sister gave me all her maternity clothes last week as she doesnt think she'll have any more so it was good fun sorting through them and having a free new wardrobe - although had a look on blooming marvellous and would really like a few things off there too - need to see whether i'm being made redundant first i suppose.

DungunGirl · 22/10/2008 10:03

Hello!!

Any dentists in the house?

I am worrying myself silly as my dentist did me an amalgam filling last week and I have just read that you shouldn't have them in pregnancy!!!!

I had a REALLY deep decay in my back tooth and he had to remove an old cracked filling and replace it.

I am really worried now as I think I can still taste the bitter taste of the filling a week after having the filling!

HELP!!! What should I do????

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 22/10/2008 10:20

Hi DunGungirl - try not to worry, my dentist told me that they advise not doing them in pregnancy as there's a tiny risk that when extracting the old filling or putting in the new one you could get a small amount of mercury released into the bloodstream. But it's a tiny risk as well as a tiny amount of mercury, and they generally feel that they might as well wait nine months to do it rather than take that tiny risk, seeing as pregnancy is a temporary state.

But lots of people have fillings before they even realise they're pregnant, and in emergency cases they would do the filling rather than wait, so it really is a small risk.

This is from a review of the evidence:

COT
In December 1997, the UK?s Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT) ? an independent expert advisory committee to the government - reviewed the assessment submitted to the European Commission and issued their own statement on the toxicity of
dental amalgam.

The Committee stated that it had considered the safety of dental amalgam previously in 1986. At that time the Committee had recognised that some mercury may be released from completed restorations, but it was of the opinion that the use of dental amalgam was free from risk of systemic toxicity
and that only a very few cases of hypersensitivity occur. In its 1997 statement, the Committee considered that its earlier conclusions regarding the lack of
risk of systemic toxicity and hypersensitivity remained unchanged.

  • The Committee did form the opinion, however, that although there is no available evidence to indicate that the placement or removal of dental amalgam fillings during pregnancy is harmful, it may be prudent to avoid doing this where clinically reasonable.

Chief Dental Officer
Following the publication of advice from COT, the Chief Dental Officer and
Deputy Chief Medical Officer (April 1998) produced concise precautionary
advice with respect to amalgam fillings and pregnancy. It remains the
Department?s advice that dentists should continue to avoid or delay any dental
intervention or medication during pregnancy, however a dental emergency where treatment with dental amalgam is required can outweigh any, as yet, theoretical risk of systemic toxicity.

British Dental Health Foundation

In July 2003, the British Dental Health Foundation issued their view (Policy
Statement) on dental amalgam, and concluded:
?The BDHF does not consider that the use of dental amalgam containing mercury poses a significant health risk?.
They concurred with the advice given by the Department of Health with respect to minimising amalgam fillings and removals during pregnancy.

Elsewhere
Elsewhere, the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden, the New
Zealand Ministry of Health and the Malaysian Dental Council (to name but
three) have all reached very similar conclusions about the safety of amalgam
fillings.

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 22/10/2008 10:21

ps the bitter taste is probably the anaesthetic

conkertree · 22/10/2008 10:26

my goodness littlemydancing - that was impressive - are you an encyclopaedia in rl?

Bubbaluv · 22/10/2008 10:29

Dungungirl, Did your dentist know you where pregnant? Did they do x-rays?

DungunGirl · 22/10/2008 11:51

Thanks ladies. That makes me feel better.
They knew I was pregnant. They didn't do any X-Rays.

I think it was because I had a very very deep decay and right at the back at maybe why he decided to do a amalgam...

Littlemydancingwiththedevil
Do you really think that I could still be tasting the anaesthetic? I did wonder...

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 22/10/2008 12:18

I always have a bitter taste in my mouth for a while after fillings, and once the dentist spilled some right at the back of my tongue and I was very nearly sick! It has a very characteristic, bitter taste, really revolting.

Not encyclopaedia - just Google!

The thing with so many of these things to do with pregnancy is that obviously there's no way to test drugs or chemicals in humans, as what pregnant woman is going to let them experiment on her? So unless it's vital, they tend to advise you to steer clear of anything that involves chemicals and substances, even though most of them are probably fine.

I'm going to the dentist next week, blergh.

BabyBolat · 22/10/2008 17:00

LittleMy you really should start your own baby question website - google or no google you are like the knowledge guru!!!

Babypringle, try not to worry, sure they are only being extra careful to make sure they keep it under control - I have a lovely doctor and never worry about going in there but as soon as I go in to the hospital I completely freak out! DH finds it hilarious!

Dungangirl, if you told them you were pregnant am sure it is fine (again have absolutely no knowledge of this but sure they will have to be pretty confident they are not going to do any harm!)
