Hello ladies, babies and bumps. I hope you are all relatively well/sane/not-about-to-commit-murder (delete as appropriate).

Am of miamla's super sleeping fart machine. Mr Squeaky decided that 4 times last night would be an appropriate feeding regime . Still, only another 8 weeks til we get to the magical, mythical 12 week point. Please can someone tell him that he is supposed to sleep through the night by that point, unlike his brother who managed 1 sleep through by the age of 14 months .

I love the new photos dizzy and ts, what gorgeous girls.

Am hot and sweaty today in NOtts - not pleasant

waytoomuchchocolate · 26/08/2008 11:12

thanks for the list miamla will start with all of that! i guess i'm assuming that birth positions etc will go out of the window until i really know how i'll feel, but at least writing something down might help when if we end up in total chaos!

at the moment i'm more worried about BF to be honest having seen how many poeple find it so hard. am so impressed with you all persevering through it.

miamla, how did it go with asking for BF asap via breast crawl? my hosp (queen charlottle's in london) have said they encourage this, and it's what i'd like, but wondering if they really do let you try it.

XX

PetitFilou1 · 26/08/2008 11:16

No birth plan here either btw except I've told dh I don't want pethidine or anything like it and I do want the injection to get the placenta out (after having a womb infection first time round when the mw helped it out naturally and I think some was left behind, second time I had the injection and it slid out in one go and I could see all in one piece!) Other than that I will be going with the flow.

PetitFilou1 · 26/08/2008 11:18

CC Depends what you mean by 'sleep through' For me it means 7pm - 7am which usually takes my dcs 6-8months...

cyteen · 26/08/2008 12:13

Just seen that warthog has had her little girl Nice quick labour as well! Congrats warthog

VintageGardenia · 26/08/2008 12:28

LoW I had been thinking about you a lot after you posted your birth story. I'm really sorry to hear about the mastitis, etc, it's meant to be so unpleasant - hope antib's work for you soon.

pf this thread is not coming to an end. If it comes to an end who is going to see me through DS's first illness, teeth, nappy rash, smile, etc? I hope you are not suggesting I might have to fall back on family or DP or real life people, now are you? I think it must be so tough being at the end of the list, though. I was keen enough for the baby to be born, if I had had to suffer through other people all having theirs I'd have been chewing my blanket. (If I had a blanket, obviously.)

TS hope your DD1 is in better form today, and you too - it's so tough being torn between the needs of 2 small people - especially when you yourself need a bit of TLC too. How's your wound today?

AnnVan mmm porridge, my top tip is to make a sort of crust on top of it with a sprinkling of dark muscovado sugar, which then grits every steaming, tooth-stabbing mouthful, yum yum. Think I might have some for lunch!

Why oh why do none of you live in Dublin? Sibh if you are ever within 100 miles of me I'll come for a mini-meet-up.

AnnVan · 26/08/2008 13:03

VG - well I'd be happy to visit you in Dublin
My BIL took my sister to Ireland on their honeymoon. We're both nuts about all things Celtic and Gaelic, so it was thoughtful. Although it's also very convenient that his favourite whiskey is Jamesons, so they just HAPPENED to visit the distillery while they were there

karney · 26/08/2008 13:33

Hi, I,ve been off the radar for ages but I just wanted to let you know I had a baby boy on wed 20th at 5.10am. His name is Sonny and we just love him to bits although I am suffering from sleep deprevation due to him demanding a feed (bf) every hour and a half through the night. . congratulations to you all and hopefully I'll get a chance to join you in some post preg chat in between trying to get some kip! xxxx

congratulations karney!

a couple of questions - just looking for ideas, although I am sure there are no magic answers!

what do you do with your baby when he is awake but has eaten, changed and is not crying?

what do you do when he has eaten, changed, burped, changed, gone for a walk, fed and is still crying?

how much does your baby sleep in 24hrs?

here - weight gain borderline - still not close to birth weight. lots of top up feeding last couple of days, but using ebm so am feeling a bit better about this. oh and he poo-ed all over the paediatrician yesterday, which I thought was very cool!

lots of thoughts to all, sorry for not catching up with all the posts

poppysocks · 26/08/2008 14:00

Congratulations karney and warthog!

Hello ladies. Can sympathise with those of you who are still waiting. Both of my DDs were due on 17th of the month, but DD1 was 9 days late, so not born until this day of the month. The longest 9 days of my life. Weird to think that DD2 would only just be being born if she was the same!

Just back from the hospital where Emily had her hips checked, based on the fact that mine were dodgy when I was little. All fine and in fact, they commented on how strong she seems. They also looked at her foot that had talopy(sp???) - was it you who mentioned it miamla? Seems that the in utero crushing has sorted itself out now and the foot's fine too. Phew!

warthog · 26/08/2008 14:46

thanks

good luck those of you still waiting.

VintageGardenia · 26/08/2008 15:26

Well done karney and warthog.

albs how are you feeling today on the feeding front? Hope you are not still in terrible pain. Seems so unfair .

lwfh when all is calm and the baby is awake you can put on some music for him, or put him in a chair beside a low, open window (having previously coralled any lunatic dogs who may live with you), or put him in pram outside while you rock pram gently with your foot and absorb yourself in your book. I have also read to him out of the book I am reading myself (you see many of my strategies involve getting in some reading for myself). My elder DS made some black and white patterns on a piece of card, which we prop beside the baby chair, he turns his head and looks at the patterns really intently. You could also do some light massage on his arms, legs, tummy, with a little oil. I have signed up for a baby massage class for when he is about five weeks I think, so I will pass on some tips from that when the time comes!

When he's crying ... well ... gosh I don't know ... I walk him around on my shoulder / chest, patting his back, singing along to music, or murmuring to him. Very often I end up offering a feed, and often enough he takes it for a few minutes then drops off to sleep. Often a change of atmosphere distracts him from crying, so I take him upstairs, or out of the back door. Sometimes he likes to lie down and have his tummy stroked. Babies are so different, though, aren't they? Sometimes he likes to be wrapped up tightly and let go to sleep, sometimes he likes to be cuddled and comforted.

By the way - my sil sent me this book which is lovely, one simple idea for each day of the first year of a baby's life. Starts of with really little things like stroke his tummy with a piece of silk or fur.

VintageGardenia · 26/08/2008 15:29

Apologies - I am sure none of you has fur in the house of course!

longwayfromhome · 26/08/2008 15:45

thanks, this is great - having a list of ideas helps ...

miamla · 26/08/2008 16:49

annvan i dislike shopping full stop!

petitfilou no need to apologise about laughing at the battery powered chairs, its exactly what i've been doing! Hmm, like the of being able to adjust the position he's in,hadn't thought of that. i will continue my search, thanks for your help

CC dont be too green faced at T. he's only slept through twice now, twice can still be a coinincidence! unless of course its his farting efforts your jealous about... that is something you should be jealous over!!
Hot and sweaty sounds delightful!

wtmc with my positions it was more that i knew what i wouldnt want to be in ie flat on my back. really glad i had it written down because thats the position i ended up in from sheer exhaustion but dp remembered birth plan so managed to manoevour me up onto my knees with the mw's help. please dont worry about bf, yes its exhausting but its also one of the most magical rewarding things i've ever done. as for the breast crawl, i suspect it was more down to the mw i had than the official policy of the hospital so if the hospital encourage it you're half way there! but in answer to your question, yes, they really did let me try. we were left alone for a couple of hours. he almost managed it just as she came back in to weigh him and move rooms. not a problem though, we tried again 24 hours later and he managed beautifully so dont panic if it doesn't happen straight after birth

VG you just say the word when you want a visitor from London. I love Dublin so careful what you wish for!

lwfh in answer to your first question, i put him on a blanket on the floor and play with him or read him Dr Seuss (i admit the latter is mostly for my benefit!). in answer to your second, i feed him again and again and again. he's a bottomless pit and i've only known him to cry about two things, hunger and wanting a cuddle. as for how much sleep he has, alot! oh, and i agree with all of VG's suggestions, especially the changing location one. T seems to love the awful climbing roses wallpaper we've got in the hallway

poppy yes, was me who mentioned talopy (i'm going with your spelling because i know no better!) T had it in both feet but physio has just given us the all clear. She commented that it was a sign of a v tight uterus. i'm pleased emily's hips are all ok as well. they're such a worry already aren't they!

where has today gone? i don't feel like i've done anything!

miamla · 26/08/2008 16:54

hee hee, sorry about long post. Can you tell that T's sleeping at the moment!

what do you do with your baby when he is awake but has eaten, changed and is not crying?

Sit him in a bouncy chair near me or DCs so we can pretend he is interacting

what do you do when he has eaten, changed, burped, changed, gone for a walk, fed and is still crying?

Try to remember he is a tiny undersea creature forced to become a land animal, it's all horrid, hard and scary out here. That helps me keep my patience and not take it so personally.
If it's daytime I bung him in the sling until he falls asleep then put him in his crib (or pass him to any nearby grownup for a cuddle). Or pack him into the car, drive to a carpark and read/snooze.
At night I swaddle him, hold him close on his side, swing my hips left to right, make a regular shushing noise and gently pat a decelerating rhythm on his back. Or I bung him on the boob til he dozes off (ok maybe I can admit that BFing does have some positives.)

VG I know its not the same but I'll be over in Dublin (or at least very close) at some point if not this year then early next year

lovely news karney I love the name Sonny

LofW hope you're feeling at least a little better

longway we're still at the eat/feed/fart/shout/sleep/eat/sleep/fart/eat/eat/eat stage

miamla I found one of the inflatable hoop things to sit them up in brilliant (in a month or so obviously), we have a blue chair on kind of rockers rather than bouncy and both of mine loved mats on the floor - will need a new one though as was ruined after the first two

something like these

playnest or as I call it and inflatable ring!!

playmat

nice stripey bouncy chair

dizzydixies · 26/08/2008 17:00

may I suggest though that you pick one you like the look of - they're much of a sameness and get it from ebay or kiddiecare - the price difference can be huge!

the two things we founf inaluable with our first 2 were a swing and a stand up activity table

swing

static walker

the swing used to knock mine out for hours on end and they both loved their stand up things too - obviously not at this stage though

PetitFilou1 · 26/08/2008 17:16

miamla dizzy is right - kiddicare online is a good bet

Thanks all who've said you're not leaving me yet! VG I am chewing my blanket - it feels like everyone else is well into the first few weeks of new babyhood and I'm still pleading with him to come out! I never dreamed this one would be overdue, which doesn't help. Sometimes because everyone is now understandably busy recently it is felt like you aren't out there anymore but it is nice to be reassured that you are!

PetitFilou1 · 26/08/2008 17:22

lwfh in response to your questions - I second everyone elses replies but also would add that that is why new mums often meet up and have coffee mornings as that is just the way babies are to start with and sharing it with other people/giving the baby a new environment to be in for a couple of hours breaks the monotony and the isolation that you can sometimes feel.

also - I'd say that sometimes a baby is just tired but can't get to sleep. This is where slings come in very handy. I use exactly buckets description of a new baby as being like an underwater creature for the first three months. Their little bobbly heads and flailing arms - they feel much safer all wrapped up and cosy next to you sometimes.

Everyone welcome to Dublin! And we are very baby-friendly here!

No news from oops, wonder how she is getting on.

TwilightSurfer · 26/08/2008 18:53

internet issues here today....

Reese is very congested which concerns me. Have held her in my arms since 4am. She's eating, pooping, peeing, & sleeping normally BUT seems droopy. No fever. Color is good. Just don't like having to suction her nose. Will try to post again later.....internet permitting.

Hi all. I've been missing for about a week, for a host of reasons, first of which was that Eibhlín choked on mucus last Tuesday and spent a day in hospital. It turns out that a very fast second stage can leave babies full of mucus and prone to choking fits until the mucus has disappeared. Luckily, she was in my arms when it happened as I just had a sense she was unsettled. I spent 15 mins trying to clear the stuff, while trying to ring DH who had taken DS and DD to a puppet show at the library. In the end when she was going floppy, I hailed down my miraculous postman who gave us a lift to the doctor's. She is fine now, though prone to projectile vomiting through her nose if she gets away with over-feeding. There's a day I wouldn't take the opportunity to re-live.

The next day, I passed a chunk of the placenta, which was a bit of a surprise, and I've been on antibiotics for a womb infection which set in the day after that. Another miraculous figure in the shape of my public health nurse (like the health visitor in the UK but with added saintliness) has managed to keep me at home on antibiotics with only a short trip up to the hospital in Cork.

Did I mention that our boiler, and one of our two cars died last week too. I keep repeating 'This too will pass' and it is passing though the car situation is still a total pain and needs sorting before DS starts school on Monday.

The thought of a meet-up in Dublin at some time seems a very soothing thought.

It's lovely to catch up on the news of all the babies, too many to mention by their lovely names, so a general hello to all the new small ones, and a great sigh of relief on hearing all of your comforting voices again ...

Got to run as milk is in demand.
