First time mums expecting Spring babies

FlirtyThirty · 19/08/2008 11:38

Hello!

I'm expecting my first baby on 24 April. I'm currently only 4+4 but have NO symptoms at all! Have just retested as I'm convinced I've imagined it!

Went to Dr yesterday to share the news and have to wait for hospital 'choose & book' paperwork so that I can arrange first scan for around 10 October.

There seems to be so many decisions to make all of a sudden...

Anyway...just wondered how you other first timers were finding things...or your other halves for that matter. Mine is still in total shock in spite of this being a planned baby!

Hello everyone!

skiing that holiday sounds lovely...a good mix of city & relaxation. Hope the weather stays good!

littleduck glad to hear you are well? Any idea where you might go for a scan? I need to start making an appointment (Something to count down to!) but am not 100% sure where to start.

evs hope you are doing well and don't have too many difficult patients today.

Is anyone else struggling to brush their teeth. I seem to have the nausea under control for most of the time but brushing my teeth is gauranteed to make me throw up. It makes me nervous now....My heart sinks every time I even look at my toothbrush. I am sure that the nerves make it worse

Hello to anyone I might have missed, hope everyone is doing well!

skiingone · 04/09/2008 12:36

Good afternoon girls!

Brighsideoflife No problems with brushing teeth so far. However after everytime I wash my hair I feel sick, have not thrown up yet, but was very close a couple of times just after getting out of the shower. Now trying to wash my hair as rarely as possible without looking dirty. Not sure this will work with brushing teeth...
I'm sure we will feel better soon.

daisyj · 04/09/2008 13:20

evs - great news - so happy for you [big relief emoticon]

brightside - is it a gag reflex thing? You poor thing - I just have this image of you looking forlornly at your toothbrush and edging your hand closer to it as you steel yourself.

skiingone - is it the smell of the shampoo making you feel like that? I've found I don't want to wear perfume any more, and my usual body lotion, moisturiser etc, smells really chemically. I've switched to Origins and Dr Hauschka stuff, which is so expensive I normally only use it as a treat, but hey, it's better for the baby

Hope you have a lovely break away from ths miserable (so far) September.

littleduck - snap, same age. Glad I'm not the oldest

Just realised the nausea has kicked in again in the last couple of days because I didn't have an acupuncture treatment this week. So for anyone who's suffering out there (and I'm not even that bad, not throwing up like Choc Eclair), it really does work.

xx

skiingone · 04/09/2008 13:51

daisyj - what shampoo/conditioner are you using now?
Thanks for the wishes

x

daisyj · 04/09/2008 14:01

Am using Organic Pharmacy Jasmine high gloss shampoo and conditioner - never used it before, but they had a special offer (usually it's expensive! It's quite nice, but the product I'm totally in love with is Origins (stand by for wanky name) Precipitation body lotion (in the dispenser not the tub, which seemed a bit too rich for me). It's fab. Smells very faintly of nice organic things, feels great and soaks in quickly. And no, I'm not on commission

Korres stuff is lovely, too. They avoid a lot of synthetic compounds and replace them with natural ingredients and the prices aren't silly. You can get all their stuff on line.

Also love Dr Hauschka light rose day cream for face.

skiingone · 04/09/2008 14:13

Thanks! Found that special offer on the net - might give it a go once back from holidays - don't want them to deliver when I'm away

BrightSideOfLife · 04/09/2008 17:07

Hi all,

Some great hints on the toiletries, and interesting as the smell of my fragrance free hand cream has started making me feel really queasy. Time for some online shopping I think! Good excuse!

daisyj yes, it is like a gag reflex. And on the rare occasion that I manage to finish brushing without being sick, rinsing my mouth out sets me off. As I wash my face every morning or night, I eye out my toothbrush and steel myself. Definitely developing a Hate Relationship.....

ChocolateEclair · 04/09/2008 17:43

hi girls - very interesting conversations about the toiletries!

I have been having similar feelings tbh. Although I feel naseous most of the time it is worse when I brush my teeth (am trying sooooooo hard to only brush the front ones! lol!). I am also finding that I feel sick and dizzy when I get out of the bath, esp if it's been a little too hot!

The worst thing for me this week is that I am havoing to force liquids down. I just don't fancy any drinks at all and I feel ill when I drink anything. I ended up having about 30 shreddies in a full bowl of milk this morning just to get some liquid down!

Oh the joys of early pregnancy hey!

Hope everyone is OK apart from the vomiting!

littleduck · 04/09/2008 20:16

Hi girls

Brightside - friend had private scan at the Fetal Medicine Centre in London (I think that was the name, definitely Fetal Medicine in the title!) and thought they were fab, took loads of time with her and were very thorough and nice. Nightmare about the toothpaste effects - poor you!

Daisyj - your shampoos sound lovely, skiingone I hope they do the trick for you!

Hi to everyone I've forgotten......

Almost shamefacedly I must admit that I haven't had any nausea or been sick at all - yet! I'm only 6 weeks so I guess there's plenty of time for it to kick in with a vengeance. Still have 'orribly sore boobs and lots of period-like pains though, latter are apparently common in the early days and nothing to worry about as I've had no bleeding.

Hope everyone's well

love LD x

AngelDog · 05/09/2008 13:44

Hello everyone

evs, glad to hear the scan was ok.

skiingone - enjoy your break. I'm off to Scotland in a couple of weeks for a cheap posh weekend away (thanks to Tesco clubcard points). I hope I'm up to eating the cooked breakfasts - devastated at being unable to eat fried egg with runny yoke!

Brightsideoflife - brushing my teeth makes me retch too, especially if my toothbrush goes anywhere near my tongue. I'm glad to find out it's not just me who's weird like that!

No sickness so far though, except the morning I went for my booking appt at the hospital (good timing, eh?) I had to wait an hour & 20 mins to see the midwife. There is a possibility I might have an infection as there was protein in my urine so am waiting to hear further results from their lab. And the midwife reckons I'm at least a week less far through than my GP thought - 8 1/2 wks instead of 9 1/2 (grrr) so provisional due date moved from 5 to 11th April (pending likely change again when I have the dating scan on 3rd Oct).

littleduck - just enjoy absence of nausea / sickness! The period-like pains aren't much fun but I'm getting them less now than I was, so yours could be improving soon.

ChocolateEclair - I take my hat off to you, having to cope with pregnancy and teaching. I used to teach junior kids but now I do data analysis in local government. However, I've been off work with wrist problems for the last 5 months so at least I can have a kip whenever I need to. (Except when the builders converting our loft are drilling through the ceiling, that is...ouch!) The helpful midwife told me that I might not see any improvement in my wrist until after baby as pregnancy makes these things worse. I don't think my boss will be very pleased when she finds out.

Anyone else feel too young to be having a baby? I'm 29 - hardly ancient (DH nearly 32) - but most of the time I just don't feel old enough!

Enjoy all your weekends!

BrightSideOfLife · 05/09/2008 16:53

hello!

I cannot wait for the weekend - it is not going to start a minute too soon

ChocolateEclair I hope you are doing well and the nausea is OK. Sounds like you should be on a soup diet for a while? I actually find ice cold water or sugary drinks help my nausea. Fascinating how different everyone is.

Thanks littleduck I will look up the Fetal Medicine centre, I have heard the name before. Someone has also recommended Babybond.

I also have 'period' pains. They aren't too bad during the day but often wake me up at night. Like you - I refuse to worry about them as they are not accompanied by bleeding I also find it difficult to seperate them from...er...trapped wind

angeldog hmmmm...I am rather jealous of your weekend away! I hope you have fun and manage those cooked breakfast. Haggis anyone?

Pity about your dates being pushed back but they are prone to change and, as you say, may well change again at your dating scan.

5 months off work! Wow!! I am sure it hasn't been pleasant but at the moment I envy you

Hello to everyone else I might have missed

daisyj · 05/09/2008 17:09

Hi lolianja - do join us. Pull up a chair and help yourself to a chocolate brownie (I bought made them myself).

CE I've taken the liberty of updating you too. Sorry if I'm out by a day or two, but I think you're pretty much the same as me. Student midwife decided that I was a day further on than my scan last Friday said. I've lost track on everyone else!

Have now moved to parents' to escape building site. AngelDog - you have my sympathy on all counts. Being ancient compared to you (36) I can't say I feel too young, but I reckon I would have at 29 [patronsing emoticon] . Am a little envious of you starting before 30 - I reckon it's the perfect age if you're lucky enough to be in the right circumstances.

Have a fab weekend, laydeez. xx

skiingone · 05/09/2008 19:08

Hello girls!

Welcome lolianja! You're slightly ahead of us so we expect advance warnings as you will know it all a bit earlier.

Angeldog - sorry to hear about your wrist problems, one extra thing to worry about in pregnancy, hope you are managing ok with it. I just finished my job in Sydney and moved to London so not working now and pregnant. I'm 32 and DH is 38 - we were not planning kids yet, we though we could still wait a bit, it just happended.

Enjoy your weekend away and eat what you want - within reason !

Just had my growth scan and it's growing a bit faster than it should ( I think it's because I'm eatng way too much) but within norm, so should be ok. The doctor said that it's also probably a boy, although a bit too early to say for sure... and I was just looking at all the nice pink things there are for baby girls...

Enjoy your weekend everyone! Back in 10 days.

littleduck · 05/09/2008 20:09

Hi girls

Angeldog - hope the sickness continues to hold off, thanks for the tip about the period pains. I'd love a proper cooked breakfast with nice soft eggs, I rarely eat them but really fancy one now I'm pregnant and can't have the soft eggs! Hope the wrist isn't being too troublesome.

Brightside, let us know which place you eventually choose for the scan. I know what you mean about the trapped wind.....

Lilianja - welcome, great to have you with us!

Daisyj - oooh, please may I have one of those brownies!!!

skiingone - great to hear the growth scan, went well, hope you have a lovely holiday jsut in case you get to read this before you go.

Have a good weekend everyone - off to DP's dad's 70th tomorrow, lots of champagne about but none for me!!!!

evs34 · 05/09/2008 21:47

hey ladies. hope you all have a lovely weekend.
lemon barley water with fizzy water and loads of ice seems to be my drink of the week!

i too seem to get period like pains at night and the most crazy dreams. im hoping things start to settle as we get through the weeks. at least i didnt develop any new spots overnight! never had spots as a teenager and seem to be paying for it now.

enjoy your weekend activities - im sure the odd runny egg will be ok, a glass of bubbles and not having to hold the wind in infront of people will all be great. i am going to buy some new jeans that i can actually do up!

xx

ChocolateEclair · 06/09/2008 10:46

Hi everyone...It's the weekend!!!!

Big welcome to Lolianja - agree that as you are a few weeks ahead of us you can let us know what to expect! lol!

Just had to tell you all we bought a foetal doppler off ebay (only £30) and this morning we heard baby's heart beating for the very first time! It was THE most amazing thing ever!. We timed it as well and it was around 160 bpm so really quick and very clear! We could also hear the whooshing which is the blood flow to the placenta! (Highly recommended!)

I also almost fainted as waiting for bacon to cook ...oh dear....and I'm still eating runny eggs and rare-ish steak (Think when was the last time any of you had food poisoning??? I've only ever head it once and it was from some dodgy fish and chips - none of the stuff you are meant to avoid!)

Have a fab weekend everyone! xxx

BrightSideOfLife · 07/09/2008 19:10

Hello all!

Sorry I have been quiet this weekend - I have had a rough few days...the nausea is stronger than ever. I had to abandon my DH to do the groceries alone today (Dangerous at the best of times !) as the meat aisle was more than my stomach could cope with.

I am slighty confused by my scans and although I know that every area is different - I wondered if any of you knew: When I was at the GP to 'register' (?) my pregnancy, she suggested I ask for a Nuchal Fold scan. I said yes...on Friday I got a letter from a hospital in North London with details of the date for a nuchal fold scan and the details of the blood tests that accompany it. Will I get a seperate letter from Kingston with details of the hospital and meeting a midwife for booking in? But will I then have another scan at that appointment? With my previous pregnancy I got the letter for the scan in the same pack as the details of the midwife & hospital...and the scan & the midwifes appointment were at the same hospital (The same time actually...) so I am slightly confused now.

Of course...the patient thing to do would be to wait and see what comes in the mail over the next week. It is hardly like it is a rush - but I want to know now

CE - That is great news about the Doppler. How re-assuring to hear such a good heart rate. Which brand did you get? (I am planning my future shopping list )

lolianja congrats and welcome!

evs I also like the bitter citrus drinks right now. Bitter Lemon is YUMMY

littleduck I eventually booked an 8 weeks scan at Babybond in their London South office, on Saturday 20th september. Only 13 days to go (not that I am counting )

skiing You are probably on holiday already - but that is great news about your scan. Congratulations.

Hello to anyone I have missed. Have a lovely Sunday evening

BinkyB · 08/09/2008 16:18

It's been an absolute AGE since I posted on here and I can only blame sickness but I am still here! And have added myself to your list... I've tried to put it in date order, is that OK? Hope I've done it right.

THE SPRING COLLECTION
lolianja 14+4 due 2 March
CE 10+5 due 28 March
Daisyj 10+5 due 28 March
Skiingone due 3 April
BinkyB TWINS due 7 April
evs34 due 12th april
Flirty 5+0 due 24 April
Littleduck 6+0 due 30 April
Brightsideoflife 5+4 due 1 May

BrightSide I have just received a scan appointment for with the ultrasound technician, and for a few days later, the booking in and blood tests with the midwives. That's at Chelsea & Westminster though, probably different by hospital.

Have enjoyed catching up on all your news fellow newbies! Sounds like all in much the same boat. I either have a flat as a pancake tummy after puking all day or in the evenings, look about six months gone but it's all wind - not exactly feeling 'glowing' either way..!

Hope you all get through the working week OK. When are we allowed to quit again??

Elpis · 09/09/2008 09:50

Hello again, can I be added to the list? Online calculators say 23 April but I think April 25 as I know the conception date.

Is anyone else going to the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson? I don't really have much choice in the matter, for tedious health-related reasons, but a friend who's 20 weeks pregnant says it looks antiquated but otherwise very good.

ChocolateEclair - with me it is just the opposite: I am thirsty all the time! Not for coffee, though: I've completely lost my taste for it. Apart from a near miss with a venison burger last night the nausea hasn't been bad.

Rather alarmingly my hair is falling out a little - apparently some women don't get thicker hair, it thins instead.

BTW, I'm a desk editor at a newspaper in London: my fiance is 37 and I'm 33.

Do like the idea of meeting up in Regent's Park on the 20th. It will rain, though, so we should think of a cafe ...

My mother insisted on giving me her pregnancy book (published 1975) yesterday. From a historical point of view quite interesting, but thank God things have moved on - I suspect medics don't talk about "blighted ova" any more, and no one knew about folic acid, though they had worked out that smoking was undesirable. Much talk of "your husband" and the "plight of the pregnant single girl" ...

BrightSideOfLife · 10/09/2008 11:18

Hello all!

welcome elpis and congratulations! That book is amusing, 'the plight of the single pregnant girl' What guidelines do they give on what you can or can't eat? I am interested in how they might have changed!

binky Twins? Congratulations! That is interesting about the appointment with your midwife and the scan. I saw my GP yesterday (about something un-pregnancy related) and asked about the scan. Apparently she isn't sure if my hospital (Kingston) offered Nuchal Fold Scans, so she refered me but if Kingston DO offer me the nuchal scan, I need to cancel the Kings College scan. Very confusing...especially with my pregnancy brain

I am really, really struggling with nausea...I used to be able to control it by eating little and often but even that is not working now. I can't believe it is so bad so soon...I am only 7 weeks on Friday!

I hope everyone else is well!

evs34 · 10/09/2008 15:02

afternnon all. i am soooooooooooooooooo tired today, feel as though dragging an elephant around with me or as though walking through mud. have had to resort to caffeine.

glad i live up north as our maternity care seems fantastic compared with you poor londoners. sorry i cannot help you out with scan info but i think it is all done quite differently here. nuchal scan not available in our area unless have it done as private scan - we are doing this but for 190 quid!!

elpis - my hair is also falling out and i am v spotty - not a good look!
binky - good to hear from you. i wish i could quit now.
my birthday on the 20th so my parents are coming to stay so a trip to london is out for me im afraid - have fun though if you do all meet up. xx

AngelDog · 10/09/2008 16:26

Hello everyone.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to bow out at this point. I had a very small amount of bleeding yesterday, rang the GP who got me an ultrasound first thing this morning. The scan (eventually) showed a little one sitting there inside me, but with no movement & no heartbeat. It was an 8 week size (I'd got as far as about 9 1/2).

It was a bit of a shock but we're bearing up. We got to see a picture of it from the scan, which made me feel a bit better at least. Now we just need to decide whether to have them 'suck' it out (tmi!) or wait for it to sort itself naturally. I think we may go for the former as it feels really odd knowing that you're carrying a dead baby inside - I suspect waiting for things to happen naturally won't be particularly pleasant. Now I just need to persuade my hormones to catch up with current events.

The hospital (QEII in Welwyn) were really good - professional but sympathetic and I was impressed at how soon they saw me, given that I only rang my GP early yesterday afternoon. The silver lining in this horrible cloud is that I can eat fried eggs with runny yolks to my heart's content...

Hope you are all well and not too ill - maybe catch up with some of you on a discussion board in the future.

BrightSideOfLife · 10/09/2008 16:43

Oh AngelDog, I am so - so sorry.

daisyj · 10/09/2008 17:47

AngelDog - so very very sorry. It's a horrible, horrible thing, and we are all thinking of you. When and if you want to, can I direct you to the wonderful MC Avengers thread - they are fantastic ladies without whom I would have found it a lot harder to cope with my mc in March.

Whatever decision you make (D&C or otherwise) I'm sure it will be the right one for you. Remember to look after yourself and don't feel bad about taking time off work - if it helps, the obstetrician told me to take 2 weeks (she said 'you won't think you need it, but you will do' - and she was right.

Please let us know how you are when you're ready, and I'm sure you'll be back soon. .
