First time mums expecting Spring babies

FlirtyThirty · 19/08/2008 11:38

Hello!

I'm expecting my first baby on 24 April. I'm currently only 4+4 but have NO symptoms at all! Have just retested as I'm convinced I've imagined it!

Went to Dr yesterday to share the news and have to wait for hospital 'choose & book' paperwork so that I can arrange first scan for around 10 October.

There seems to be so many decisions to make all of a sudden...

Anyway...just wondered how you other first timers were finding things...or your other halves for that matter. Mine is still in total shock in spite of this being a planned baby!

Thanks - I've seen the womens health one and it FREAKED me out.

They scanned me for over an hour (reassuring) and couldn't see kidneys properly so I had to go back next morning when consultant looked again and declared everything a-ok.

Her comment was that too much knowledge can be a dangerous thing and that modern scans show up things you would have never known even existed before.

Sounds like blissful ignorance because now I am desperate to find info on what exactly these 'complications' can be.

Thanks for adding me to the list though!!

Peaches174 · 05/12/2008 14:15

The wikipedia link was a nice one - does not sound so worrying.

Another one I found though included a link from someone who's baby just died at 40+2 with no explanation (aside from the cord issue). good lord having babies is scary.

Has anyone else had a baby related fright?

FlirtyThirty · 05/12/2008 15:27

Peaches174 - I have a good friend who is a biological researcher specialising in reproduction/fertility. She has REAL issues with the 'science' that abounds on the internet. Really...be careful what you read or you will be beside youself with (often unecessary) worry!
Your consultant is clearly lookig at this carefully if they are scanning for that long, so I would say trust them. Easier said than done, I know...

Thanks flirty - good advice.

Do you have any ideas about what you are having? I'm convinced ours is a boy because the sonographer kept telling us to look away and apparently boy bits show up more on scans!

Good luck with yours next week, make sure they show you the feet - sooo cute!

Hi ladies!

21 week scan tomorrow!!! Guess who's excited!!

I'll let you know what it is... we're dying to find out and I think I know what we're having ( a few subtle clues... hairy tummy, OJ craving, no vomiting etc etc) but we'll see if the old wives' tales are true at 15h20 tomorrow...

XXX

Bicnod · 07/12/2008 17:41

hello girls - sorry haven't posted for a while... had lots of late nights with work and am truly knackered.

Welcome to rosa and girly

Oh god, can I please have a moan? We're having our bathroom refitted and were going to get someone in to do it but DH has decided that he and his dad can do it themselves - he absolutely promised me it would be done by Christmas. I was told to leave them to it for this weekend (no toilet overnight so not great for a pregnant lady) which I duly did. Came back an hour ago and bathroom NOWHERE near finished - no sink, we have to use the kitchen one, and old toilet still in place. I asked very nicely what the timeframe for completion was and DH's dad said end of January. END OF F*ING JANUARY. I CANNOT cope with living in a building site for the next two months. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARHGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH. Been sat in living room crying quietly for past 10 minutes because really can't cope with this.

Really really just want DH's dad to bugger off now so I can voice my concerns to DH and tell him how stressed this is making me...

Sorry to vent

Bicnod · 07/12/2008 17:43

p.s. I do appreciate that in the grand scheme of things this is not important etc etc - but can't help that it's making me feel so stressed and upset

girlylala0807 · 07/12/2008 20:04

Hi to all who have said hi!

Ah Bicnod, we have lived in our flat since April..and have still not unpacked. I know its not quite the same but i can kinda sympathize. It is important though!! Just tell them your getting someone in to finish it if they dont shift it!!!

xx

FlirtyThirty · 08/12/2008 09:33

Bicnod - You have my heartfelt sympathy. BUT I have to tell you, if it makes you feel better...we are actually living in a real building site - house stripped to rafters and floorboards (so FREEZING)...as the builder started the work and has 'disappeared' for weeks now. It was also supposed to all be done for Xmas. I am keeping it together - but only just - and also partly because Dh is so angry, that two of us climbing the walls would be worse!
All I can say is...deep breaths. In 15 years it'll be entertaining dinner party conversation that when you were pregnant you lived with a semi-complete toilet... Oh, and let us all be grateful our babies are not due in January!
I would calmly let both DH and father-in-law know that you'd understood it was all going to be finished by Christmas...see what FIL says then... Grrr. I feel your pain!

rosa7 · 08/12/2008 12:13

Hello!

I don't have any building dilemmas and am so grateful for this fact - however I felt yesterday this weird anxiety. I got it in my head I was feeding my poor unborn child too much adrenalin. It started when DH rolled in on Friday night at 2am and woke me up all night with snores and I wanted to push him out of the bed! . It woke the baby too who seems to kick a lot when I'm stressed which makes me feel so guilty - its a bad cycle to get stuck in.

I think I've now figured out that the bub kicks a lot too sometimes when I'm totally calm so I should not relate kicking to distress...

Maybe this is all because I found out last week babies cry in the womb!! (They smile too! :-)

And to think, up til now all the kicks made me feel happy and like things were "on track". I have to get back to that feeling.

Starting today!!

skiingone · 08/12/2008 14:00

Hello girls,

Oh bicnod and flirty! The renovations right now must be so stressful!
Bicnod - you have a right to be upset with FIL and DH if they promised to have the bathroom done by X-mas.... But just think that by the time the baby arrives you'll be living in nicely renovated nests and all the trouble will be forgotten.

Rosa - I know how you feel, I've lost a few nights sleep due to DH's snorring ( and baby kicking, and hips/legs hurtig) and I felt very upset with him(DH) and even gave him a few kicks myself. I recon a bit of stress is ok for the baby, it'll be prepared to face the world more and I recon will only develop better, well let's think so

Kitty - let us know how you went with your scan!

Hugs

BrightSideOfLife · 08/12/2008 16:45

Oh Bicnod , so sorry to hear about your bathroom! We had a new bathroom put in in January this year and even though I wasn't pregnant - I was still in tears! I ended up staying with friends through the worst of it. Good luck...

flirty I don't know how you do it!! That building work sounds stressful and freezing cold! Any news on when the builder is returning?

rosa I know what you mean about stress and worrying about the impact on the baby - but you have the right attitude, it kicks when you are calm and kicks when you are stressed - so it is doing just fine.

It is amazing that babies cry in the womb - do you remember when that starts?

kitty what is the old wives tale about a hairy stomach? Let us know how the scan goes!!

Are we still on for the kingston meet-up this weekend? Any more ideas on when and (exactly) where?

I hope everyone else is well!

rosa7 · 08/12/2008 17:02

Hi again

ChocolateEclair · 08/12/2008 18:25

Hi ladies

Welcome to all the newbies - sorry I haven't posted much of late (I actually did a massive post at the weekend then the computer crashed and I lost it all and I cried!)

We had our 24 week midwife appointment today. All is well except apparently I am measuring 2cm bigger than I should be - she said nothing to worry about yet but they would keep an eye on things! I am now panicking that I am having a giant baby! LOL! She also said she thinks it might be a boy as the HB sounded like a train! ??

She also said that a new maternity benefit is coming into force just before xmas - £190 for ALL women, not means tested. You have to be 25 weeks or more after it comes in. Thought I would let you guys know!

I am intrigued to hear about the babies crying in the womb! Awww!

Sorry about the building works - I would def be mad! I think I would ring a plumber and not tell them! They can hardly send him away once he arrives can they! LOL!

Love to all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Bicnod · 08/12/2008 22:04

Hello girls feeling much calmer today you'll be glad to hear - thank you so much for all the lovely posts. We both stayed at my aunt and uncle's house last night, which was nice as we had a chance to relax together for the first time in AGES.

Back home today but HOPEFULLY should be able to have a shower before work tomorrow. Just going to take it one day at a time and not think about when it's going to get done... it will get done eventually...

Flirty I'm so so sorry that you're living in a building site - how on earth are you coping? I am full of admiration for you... I really hope your builder gets his act together - any sign of when he'll come back?

20 weeks today - hurrah! And scan in a week's time - can't wait to see ickle bicnod again...

KittyCrackers · 09/12/2008 11:44

Hello ladies!

The scan yesterday was the MOST amazing thing ever... we saw the chambers of the heart, the inside of the stomach, the little cerebellum and spinal cord, arms and leg bones, long fingers and HUGE feet! And the verdict is in...

Its....

A....

GIRL!

I was TOTALLY wrong - and I was totally shocked when the consultant told us! To be honest, I was really gutted - my whole extended family are girls, not one boy in the whole bunch, and I'd really got my heart set on being the first to produce a boy...

BUT this morning, after sleeping on it and having dreams of princesses and ponies I'm really warming to the idea! SHE was soooo beautiful in the scan yesterday, it doesn't matter what colour she is... pink is just as pretty as blue!

So for all of you who haven't found out yet - pay NO attention to the old wives tales cos they ALL told me I was having a boy! That should liven up all the Surprises...tee hee...

Congratulations kitty!

A GIRL is great! A little princess!!!

I felt a bit like you when I found out it's a girl as at the early scan I was told it looked like a boy and I then had my head set on a boy only to hear it was a girl later. I almost said "but what hapended to my boy, what is this girl doing there?". My OB who has a little girl himself said that he really recommends girls , so I reset my head to a girl then.

Hugs to all x

Elpis · 09/12/2008 21:59

Hi everyone

skiing great news on your flat move - you must be so relieved that you'll have somewhere suitable to rest your aching self by Christmas.

girly - can't believe you don't get a 20-week scan where you are. Have you thought about having a private one, or do you not mind too much?

kitty - lol at your princesses and ponies - so glad you've come around to your little girl. I'm even more sure now that I'm having a boy. Statistically SURELY on this thread we will have pretty even numbers, and there are hardly any boys so far, so....

Bicnod and Flirty - I feel your pain. As you may remember we spent three months camping in an only-just-habitable house with concrete floors and three months of stripped to the rafters and floorboards and half-living at my parents' (for which I am eternally grateful). It WILL get finished and it will be worth it. But ohmygod, the agony! And WHY do we always choose to do this when we're pregnant. If it makes you feel better, apparently it brings couples closer together if they suffer adversity . No, really, if life is always easy then you have nothing to bond you. Apparently.

CH - That's nice about the £190 - if you have to be 25 weeks after it comes in do us March ladies miss out, then?

Kalikaroo · 10/12/2008 15:49

Hi everyone! Well, yesterday I made a complete numpty out of myself!!! As I think I mentioned in my last post, I've been a bit worried because bubs hasn't been moving for the last few days (though it was moving before that). I was walking past our local hospital yesterday and I made an instant decision to go in just to check whether they would have a listen for the heartbeat. The lovely midwife saw me almost straight away and found the heartbeat (phew) but she said that they scan all mothers that come in saying they're worried about their baby not moving because they "take mother's instincts seriously" and you can't always tell if there's a problem just by listening for the heartbeat. So after waiting for about half an hour, a doctor (who looked about 12 ) gave me a very quick ultrasound scan. During the scan the baby gave a massive kick and the doctor said "can't you feel THAT??" and I couldn't ! She said that everything's fine and that I can't feel movements when the baby is positioned right behind my placenta (which is at the front). I apologised for being such a neurotic first time mother and they were lovely about it and said it's always a good idea to get these things checked just in case.

So, moral of the story is, yes, you will feel like a twat, but if you're worried about something just go and have it checked. You'll feel a lot better and the midwives see loads of worried mums every day!!

evs34 · 10/12/2008 17:18

hello girls. gosh lots of new names, i cant keep up - hi to all and welcome.

CE what are the details about this extra money?? i will be 25 weeks the tues before crimbo so i bet ill miss out on it. i wouldnt worry too much about the 2 cm as fundal height is a pretty crude measurement of size.

i am feeling for you having bathrooms and building work done. we have only just finished our house after 2 yrs of renovations - it is a pain but soooo worth it when your nest is ready to receive tiny gorgeous babies!!

time seems to be flying now. only 17 weeks to go until baby day! seems like yesterday when i was just -7 weeks and couldnt quite believe it. how are everyones bumps coming on? people keep telling me i look small for 23 weeks but im not sure what you are supposed to look like??

going to munch tea now so have a good evening all xxx
