First time mums expecting Spring babies

FlirtyThirty · 19/08/2008 11:38

Hello!

I'm expecting my first baby on 24 April. I'm currently only 4+4 but have NO symptoms at all! Have just retested as I'm convinced I've imagined it!

Went to Dr yesterday to share the news and have to wait for hospital 'choose & book' paperwork so that I can arrange first scan for around 10 October.

There seems to be so many decisions to make all of a sudden...

Anyway...just wondered how you other first timers were finding things...or your other halves for that matter. Mine is still in total shock in spite of this being a planned baby!

Morning all...

Your weekend sounds busy but good DaisyJ , how nice to be settling in to your house. Worried for my sanity though? Glad I am not the only one...I had my first hormonal irrational freak-out the other day. My DH went away on business for one night...now I should add that we have been together for 15 years, are both frequently away from each other and normally have a healthy level of independence.

I sobbed unconsolably for about an hour before he left and a few hours afterwards because I missed him so much. I sat on the couch and wailed because I couldn't imagine how I would manage for the night without him there. He was so worried that he called a friend to pop in and check on me.

I have no idea what came over me. He is going away next week and I can't wait - I have already lined up my face mask, box set of Sex in the City and bubble bath. I normally love my evenings in alone!

BinkyB · 02/12/2008 12:35

Hello everyone
Happy to report hormones are in check today here but bump is getting out of control! Feeling suddenly huge, not helped by all ten colleagues commenting on it including particularly supportive boss' comment:
"F* me, you've eaten a lot of pies over the weekend!". How charming.

He has a point though, as I have been a little scoffer. It's cold out there though and I'm just hungry ALL the time, it's like some beast that can't be satisfied no matter what I try! Eek. Drawstring trousers here I come

Brightside & Daisy I hope you're back to your usually sunny selves - don't be embarrassed, we're allowed to be Officially Weird at the moment.

daisyj · 03/12/2008 13:05

BrightSide Spent 10 minutes yesterday morning crying after DH had left for work because I was having a sudden panic about how I was ever going to be a good mother (and everything makes me cry for the past few days - I must be having a hormone surge!). Even the cat was worried about me, and the only thing he usually thinks about is where the next meal is coming from. Emailed DH later in the day when I was recovered and able to laugh about it, and he sent me this:

'You'll cope because I?ll be there to help (a lot), and you?ve got a legion of friends and family to offer love and support, plus resources of your own that you don?t even know about yet.'

[smug about lovely DH emoticon] But I thought I'd post that because I can imagine (hopefully) that this is true for most of us and maybe it'll help if we're ever having a darker moment .

Binky - At least you have an excuse for being huge! I had 'what on earth happened' from the HR manager yesterday (I hadn't seen her for a couple of weeks so she got a bit of a shock), and 'are you sure it's not twins' from about three people. Doncha just love being public property?

I'm eating so much at the moment that colleagues on other floors actually phone me to come and get food when they have cake and chocolates. The whole company is feeding me . I'm not complaining...

girlylala0807 · 03/12/2008 13:26

Aw,

I only just noticed this thread, can I join in?

My first due 14th of April, In Edinburgh

Its been a nightmare, I have 5 weeks off uni now though so no stress over xmas.

xxxxs

daisyj · 03/12/2008 13:31

Hello girly - love the name . Welcome to Spring Babies. Glad the last few posts didn't put you off us greedy, fat, hormonal bunch . Lucky you with all that time off. Can I be nosy and ask if you are jealousy-inducingly young (like loli) or a 'mature' student?

girlylala0807 · 03/12/2008 13:37

Hey,

I am a mature student, not quite 30 but getting there lol!!!

I only have time off as I have no xmas exams...I do get to do 5 exams with a new baby in August next year though...funtimes ahead!!!

I can confirm I am to fat greedy and very hormonal, will fit in well lol.

xx

Kalikaroo · 03/12/2008 15:13

Hi ladies - hope you're all having a good day!
Welcome girlylala0807 glad to hear you're also hormonal! I've been crying at least once a day for the last few weeks and I usually never cry! Bloomin' hormones!

I'm trying to get into a Christmassy spirit today, but it's not really happening. Think I need some mince pies or something.....I still haven't managed to get my Christmas shopping started yet either and I'm sure it has to be posted this week to get to the UK in time for Christmas. Someone please kick me up the arse to get it done this weekend!!!!

saz007 · 03/12/2008 15:21

Kalikaroo I haven't done any Christmas shopping either - really need to get my arse in gear! Must at least buy cards this weekend

Just wanted to say that I got my results back this afternoon and that I'm low risk for both spina bifida and down's. My down's figure came back as 1:50000 - so I'm really chuffed with that!! Not bad for someone (just) the wrong side of 30!

brettgirl2 · 03/12/2008 18:59

Haha, gloat time. I did all of my christmas shopping on Monday (took day off work) My tip is go early in the morning, while the masses are still in bed.

Welcome girlylala sounds fun the exams with a new baby - there is no way that you can manage to defer anything? I am doing a part time masters but have deferred the whole year, I'm just too knackered after I've been at work. I had enough trying to finish off my dissertation with morning sickness, that was really pleasant!

Daisy I've had the opposite from our HR manager, she is about 35 weeks and really cross that I'm still not showing very much!!! I'm fine and can cope as long as people don't ask me if it was planned

daisyj · 04/12/2008 09:51

brettgirl - funny you should say that - flirty was saying the other day on a different thread that she'd been asked the same thing. It's a bit isn't it? I mean, do they really mean to ask you if your contraception failed...?!

I did an MA a couple of years ago, just after getting married. Really wanted to do it before trying for a baby as I knew there was no way I could cope with both - v. impressed that you finished your dissertation with ds. And girly - good on you - I think studying must be much harder when pg than working - so much harder to motivate yourself.

saz - Great results

BrightSideOfLife · 04/12/2008 11:11

brettgirl So funny about being asked if it was planned...I had the same question yesterday from a colleague who I don't know really well. I was also a little and wasn't quite sure how to answer!! (This was planned, by the way - but still none of her business)

saz great, great results, what a relief!

welcome girlylala - am very of your 5 weeks off

daisy You have every right to be smug, your DH sounds lovely!!

Is anyone else finding some of their pregnancy different to what they expected? Not bad....just different? I am not sure if I am explaining myself really well - but (for example) when I imagined what it must be like to get kicks from the baby, I had thought they would be 'localised' or specific little nudges. I am finding the vague squirming from one side of my tummy to the other a little weird! (I know the proper kicks will follow eventually...)

rosa7 · 04/12/2008 13:59

Hi everyone,
I am a spring time mum-to-be (March 23rd) and am so impressed you've all been busy posting since August while I've been sitting here coming to terms with it all. I was glad to read Beth29's post as I think the reality of life with a bub is escaping me at the moment - but how can you really, truly prepare? You just have to live it I guess!!

I do have a q about childcare as my friends in my native OZ are saying they registered their bubs pre-birth for daycare and things. I have no idea what our requirements will be, or when - but I was wondering if anyone knows about the length of waiting lists in London. I live in blackheath.

And, thanks to Daisyj for encouraging me to join this thread - as its 6 months old its a bit daunting!!

Hope you are all well!

brettgirl2 · 04/12/2008 18:41

I'm now feeling less smug about being organised......

OMG - registering for child care before the baby is born - that can't be right surely??? I intend to take a year off anyway, works doing my head in at the minute!

Plus, yes it would probably have been a good idea to masters before getting pg. My current plan is to take two modules in the first semester next year and therefore finish the damn thing while I am still on mat leave. I will have to motivate myself by the fact I've already done 2/3 AND that maybe I'll have a better chance when going for other jobs (my degree is a 2.2 haha) It shouldn't take that much time, I have a rather "minimalist" approach when it comes to studying

FlirtyThirty · 04/12/2008 19:16

Welcome girlylala and Rosa - we're a friendly bunch! And 'hi' the rest of you old-timers!

Sorry I've not been on much...have finally gained back control of my brain and so have been achieving huge amounts of work! Thank God! I feared I was becoming brain-dead and terminally lazy!

My 'baby' has been very very quiet of late. Not that I was ever getting loads of movement but occasionally I was feeling stuff, whereas now...it's all very still in there. I'm being wonderfully chilled about it though and have decided it's nothing to worry about as it's still early days to be feeling kicks and stuff. Hope this is indeed true. I'm 20 weeks now though, and have anomaly scan next week, so I guess we'll find out then.

Hello everyone, and welcome to Rosa and girlylala ... I am probably having a girl! Yes, another one on this thread! She kept her legs crossed during the scan so it was hard to see, but it looks likely. Anyhow, she is perfect, and I have another scan at 24 weeks - I'm taking part in a study into arterial blood flow - so I should know for certain by then.

Thank you for all the lovely comments about the wedding pic - I am now a great deal larger and certainly no longer have a waist.

One of the scan pix was quite touching - at least I thought so, but I've no judgement, really - and it's on my profile ...

girlylala0807 · 04/12/2008 23:37

Aw,

Thanks to all who said hi...

Im I dont get a 20 week scan here. Boohiss

I really want to know if its a boy or a gir...not dh though, and we cant afford private anyways!!!

xxx

skiingone · 05/12/2008 11:04

Hello girls,

Belated welcome to girly and Rosa!
Sorry girly that there is no 20 week scan for you. I was sure it woud be available for all....
For our confirmed girls' sake I selfishly hope it's a boy or they'll end up with a men shortage to deal with!!!...

Sorry for not posting for a while.
Was really determined to find a new apartment to rent, so was running around every day looking at all these places and then was in pain to move or do anything in the evening with SPD. But now we've made an an offer and put a holding deposit down, so if all goes well we'll be moving around 20 Dec to a place with 2 bathrooms and a decent living area ( there are stairs to deal with, so not great, but at least a bit more space and some storage areas). And then I can start NESTING

Hugs to everyone.

baublerella · 05/12/2008 11:26

Hi Everyone,

Skiingone - I can relate to the 'nesting' instinct. I have managed to clear out seveal black bags full of stuff for the charity shop and to pack up eight (!!!) boxes of 'stuff'for storage that will be better suited to a house than a one-bedroom flat! I am trying desperately to make space before (fingers crossed) the babies come. My dad suggests we just buy a chest of drawers and put one baby in each drawer....

XX Barbarella (baublerella is Christmas name)

BrightSideOfLife · 05/12/2008 12:15

hello all!

baublerella - what a great christmas name! And congrats on the nesting...we have guests coming to stay next week so we can't touch the spare room (soon-to-be-nursery) yet but I am SOOO keen to get in there and clear out some junk!

skiing you must be so pleased to have found a new flat and to be in by Christmas!

elpis That is a gorgeous scan picture...

flirty on your great attitude....I am one of the hormonal ones, so would respond with tears & a panic! Having said that though - my baby was very, very active around week 17...I could feel tickling & nudging constantly but then it went quiet for about 5 days. It was obviously just exploring a new area or something because now it is active & kicking non-stop again (I am 19 weeks today).

I had a GP check-up this morning and it was very weird to have her poke around on my tummy and show me how to feel the baby's head. I know we keep commenting on it, but I just hadn't equated my growing tummy and the baby-shaped blob in the scan with a proper baby with a head and spine that I could feel through my tummy. My first thought was: 'It is a REAL baby with a real HEAD.' yes...it wasn't one of my prouder moments...

And Baby retaliated to all that poking with a few really BIG kicks. Good child, I am training it well

I have updated the list - just to add that I am having another surprise...

Brightside - I'm so happy for you and so envious!

Not only am I 20 weeks today...but I still get only the occasional swishing baby sensation and I have never heard the heartbeat.

I cannot believe I have to wait until after 24 weeks (so after Xmas now) to hear baby's heartbeat. I am so jealous of those of you who have been offered this opportunity...

Brightside...can you tell me how to feel baby's head/spine etc...I would love to do that!

Hello all

I've been surfing around on mumsnet for ages but only posted once or twice...am due on April 4th @ Kings College London and am having a surprise - can i join??!

Can I also ask a question...has everyone had their umbilical cord checked at 20 week scan??

The doctor at kings told me I had a single umbilical artery 'but don't worry you/baby are both fine' and i'm trying to find out more about it.

All advice gratefully received!

FlirtyThirty · 05/12/2008 13:57

Welcome Peaches!
My 20 week scan is actually at 21 weeks - which is next week...but I'll listen out for anything on umbilical cords and report back...
My advice though is that if they aren't worried...you shouldn't be! Really.

So...have added you to list:

Peaches...don't know if you've seen these links on single umbilical arteries...so here you go. I'm semi-reluctant to post in case you get into a panic.

I would like to draw your attention to this line: "the authors concluded that, in the absence of additional sonographically detectable anomalies, an isolated single umbilical artery does not seem to affect clinical outcome and therefore should not alter routine obstetric management".

Please contact your GP or midwife and request an appointment for them to explain your specific case...

Oh, and this:

"Occasionally, there is only the one single umbilical artery (SUA) present in the cord. Approximately 1 in 100 newborns are found to have a SUA, making it the most common umbilical abnormality"
