I am back!!!!!

I have a beautiful baby boy called Niklas Andreas (Andreas after his dad). I'll post details on the birth annoucements website after I write this.

The birth didn't go quite as I hoped and I am glad I prepared myself for the possibility of a CS as that's what happened! We went to hospital around 8am on Wednesday morning, I hadn't had any contractions at all and the baby had still not dropped into my pelvis but I had floods of water (I know why I had such a big belly now! I had an excessive amount of water!). By 11am contractions started, they monitored the baby's heartrate for about half an hour and his heart rate dropped very low with every contraction. They said it was a big risk to continue with the labour with the baby showing signs of distress so early on the labour. They still aren't sure what caused it, but I don't care now, I am only happy that I have a wonderful baby boy who came healthily and safely into the world.

For those of you that are having a CS or know you may have to have one be prepared for a lot of discomfort after. It wasn't until the 4th day after Niklas was born that I was able to get out of bed and stand for long enough to change him. I found that really distressing. dh stayed with us the whole time and really enjoyed having to look after Niklas, I think he bonded with him more quickly than I did. It will have cost us one f* of a lot of money but worth every penny.

Sorry it took so long to let you all know but I ended up spending a week in hospital and they didn't have internet access anywhere!

.....and sorry for jumping the queue !

Congratulations Oceanmama - I'm off to the birth announcements bit after this!

Congrats to everyone that has had their babes! Well done.

I am 36+4 and have my final scan tomorrow to check that my placenta has moved round and that i'm not going to give birth to a toddler!

I'm so pleased for everyone.

Tam x

steppemum · 01/03/2005 23:07

Congratulations leogaela, wonderful, news, hope you soon stop feeling sore!

Test results today say I have cholestasis, so we're booked for an induction tomorrow morning (wednesday) Quite relieved, as the baby looks like a big one! I also discovered today that the week of my due date is the week of the Cheltenham races, so my chances of getting to the hospital and parking would have been zero, as it is we'll be happily back at home by then!

Good luck to all, we'll be back with a baby soon!

jambot · 02/03/2005 06:20

Congratulations Leogaela. You sound totally smitten.

misdee · 02/03/2005 07:15

hope it goes well steppemum, and the itching stops soon.

Nik72 · 02/03/2005 07:31

Don't suppose you March ladies would mind if I crash in from the FEb thread? It's my first baby and he/she is refusing to come out despite curries, long walks and other methods. Am seeing midwife to day and she'll probably give me a date for induction though says she'd be happy to let me go the full 14 days over as baby seems perfectly happy. Am getting a bit grumpy but trying really hard not to take it out on DH (and failing miserably at times ). Chocolate seems to be helping quite a lot!!

misdee · 02/03/2005 07:32

crash all you want

3mummy · 02/03/2005 09:00

Must first say a big congratulations to Leogaela on the birth of your little boy (start of a boy trend maybe?? !)

Anyone else finding it more and more difficult to reach the keyboard?? Gonna have to balance it on bump soon .

Good luck and best wishes to Steppemum, wishing you a short painless labour! Isn't Girly having induction today? All the best if you are out there Girly .

Popsycal - hope you aren't feeling too bad, not long to go now, are you trying all the "bring labour on" remedies?

OK, so anyone know anything about nettee, shalaa, or preggiemum - any signs of babies yet?

I know I've got 3wks (today) to go and feel kinda selfish wishing labour on when Pidge it's your due date!! ..... are you feeling overdue yet? Sorry, bet you hate me now . I haven't gone overdue in the past and I dread the idea, I am soooo knackered and uncomfortable already. On the other hand, my little girls are both poorly with nasty viral infection - basically they spend all night in bed with me, croupy cough, window open, me getting no sleep. Then they are fine all day, just a little tired, running me ragged cos I won't send them to school and nursery in the hope that they will be better by tonight! So I don't really want to bring little baby into this poorly house til all infections have gone!!

Thought I'd try to update the list, hope I got it right.............

Wow! Congrats Leogaela - am I right in thinking Switzerland's about 2 hours ahead of the UK? Niklas must have been being born almost exactly the same time as Madeline.

Welcome Nik72

Good luck with your induction today Steppemum, hope it all goes well and you're home cuddling your little one soon.

And sweeney - re: the engorgement/sore nipples advice - my midwife did three main things for me :

  1. checked positioning, re-arranged the cushions on my sofa and had me put my feet on a Yellow Pages so I was sitting more upright.
  2. reminded me to make sure the nipples don't dry out, and left me with some samples of Lanisoh cream
  3. showed me how to gently massage the breast while Maddie was feeding, to try and increase the milk flow.

She also arranged for a breast feeding counsellor to call round to see if things were improving. And I've started hand-expressing a few drops of milk before we start, as Maddie would get quite frustrated if the milk wasn't there the second she started feeding, so would suck harder and harder to try and make it come.

I think if the weather stays dry I might take Maddie for her first trip outside later - we live quite close to the River Thames, so I could walk down there and show her the swans.

bonym · 02/03/2005 09:59

Congratulations Leogaela! Glad to hear you are all ok and hope you stop feeling sore soon.
Welcome Nik72, and good luck Steppemum - hope all goes well for you and look forward to the birth announcement!
3mummy - I can really sympathise - I am also feeling knackered and huge - sleeping is becoming impossible as I am waking almost every hour and having to turn over as hips/legs/back are aching. Don't know if I can last another 3 weeks!

popsycal · 02/03/2005 10:41

Congratulations leagaela

Now will you all stop jumping the queue please!?!?!?!

surely it is my turn soon

Pidge · 02/03/2005 11:29

Ooooooooh Leogaela - that is such brilliant news - and lovely names. CONGRATULATIONS . Have been wondering how you were - but realised you were probably in hospital with the baby. We have made some progress on boys names - but still not completely decided - and I'm keeping them under my hat till the baby actually shows up. Who knows it might be a girl anyway!

Well, my due date is today! And no sign of baby. Dashed good job too, as dp is STILL laid up in bed with this nasty virus - he's been off work a week now. He keeps saying "Don't have the baby yet", which is all very well, but I don't think I have a lot of control over it. Or maybe my body does somehow know that this is not a good point to go into labour. So 3Mummy I guess I'm happy hanging on in there for a while longer - but I am getting pretty impatient to meet this character!

Nik72 - WELCOME. Hang out all you like here. You and me can compare notes on the joys of going overdue! Every time I phone someone up I have to begin the call with "I haven't had the baby yet". At least I was kind of prepared as my dd was 8 days late, so I sort of assumed this one would be too.

We had to cancel our dinner party last night - but I had already done most of the cooking in advance, so dp and I had a super grand supper of poached salmon, sweet potato mash, cabbage and potatoes cooked in soured cream, followed by chocolate truffle cake! And we still have about 80% of the chocolate truffle cake left.

Have done what is rapidly becoming my usual morning routine of taking dd to the childminders, then heading to the swimming pool. And now am going to settle down with a bar of chocolate and mumsnet - bliss!

3mummy · 02/03/2005 11:33

Pidge, HOW does 80% of a choc truffle cake survive???? Gimme, gimme, gimme

Pidge · 02/03/2005 11:38

3Mummy - well it contained 400g of dark chocolate, and around 500ml of double cream, so we're talking serious gloop here! I am a chocolate fiend, and even I only managed one (rather large) slab of it. It's from Nigella's Feast, and was extraordinarily yummy.

3mummy · 02/03/2005 11:46

If I had the energy I'd go make one and eat it all by myself (nasty mummy!!! ).

Am currently hooked on this site and can only manage to nip to the kettle for tea and hot choc drinks and to cut myself a slab (!) of sains ready made sponge cake..........it'll just have to do !

Hope dp is better soon and you get permission to have that baby!!

I keep threatening to try stuff to bring on labour but DH started nights (1st of 4) down in London (we live in Midlands) last night.... he said he wants to get "the call" when he's at work, but can I just hold on til he's on days?! Oh and his mother wants me to hold on while she has her two week hol in spain - sod that, next day shift I'm eating vindaloo like there's no tomorrow!

Pidge · 02/03/2005 11:55

LOL at your DH wanting you to wait till he's on day shifts!

Maybe we tempted fate having curry on Friday night - but it's had no effect! I do keep doing long walks though - as it's a 45 minute round trip to dd's childminders. And as soon as dp recovers I'm going to be out there buying that pineapple.

sweeney · 02/03/2005 12:09

well done leogaela
you sound well loved up.
this thread is thrumming! so much going on!
my bugaboo still hasn't been delivered and bush babes are being rather crap. they said 4-6weeks delivery and it's past that now....

bonym · 02/03/2005 13:25

Has anyone seen the birth announcements - one from Laa who I am assuming is our Shalaa (?) - had a baby girl Olivia

popsycal · 02/03/2005 13:33

Boneym - I think Laa is from the februaru thread???

bonym · 02/03/2005 13:39

Oh - I'm so confused...What's happened to Shalaa then? Anyone know?

popsycal · 02/03/2005 13:41

No idea - was wondering myself.......

3mummy · 02/03/2005 13:42

Me too!! Maybe in hospital??

3mummy · 02/03/2005 13:46

Trawling back through these posts Shalaas waters broke on the 19th Feb........ she must've had baby by now surely??

norash40 · 02/03/2005 13:51

Hey all,

I am new here and due at the end of the month (march) too. Don't think i'll make it to then though.
