Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Calico1 · 28/08/2008 08:55

Morning all

Tink - did your physio say why a CS would make your back problem worse? Also what's a GA? I had an epidural which was a real mistake - they tried 3 times to get it in and it was excruciating - turns out they were prodding the slipped disc with it so no wonder it hurt so much! Eventually they gave up and I had a spinal block (bliss) and the DS was delivered by forceps.

Nadsss - what happened to me is pretty unusual so think positive thoughts about a good birth experience. Everyone else in my antenatal group had really good experiences - I was really jealous!

rosieposey · 28/08/2008 09:33

lol markstretch your not wrong thats just what i felt like calling her as well!

Im going to do a bit of research about vit k too as all my babies had that and all that time ago there wasnt anything negative about it - all i knew about it was that it could prevent some rare form of blood disorder in newborns (or something like that).

Calico i think a GA means a general anesthetic (i think)... better double check with Tink!

Nadssss i dont know about statistics but i reckon youve got just as much chance of a straightforward birth this time as any other therefore you should be able to use the water pool fine if you want to - make sure you have it written all over your notes and in your birth plan. My first birth went really well and i'd have loved to have had a water birth but i was too chicken and went for an epidural - was all still lovely though so there is no reason bar whatsoever why you shouldnt think positive and get what you want

KazzaL · 28/08/2008 09:33

Morning ladies - busy afternoon & evening on here yesterday!

I had a "good birth" first time round and so have my fingers crossed this time - I wasn't allowed to go to the local midwife led unit like I wanted to as I have a heart murmur and they insisted I had IV antibiotic during labour and then was going to transfer there after the birth for a few days R&R and cos I'd been told they have the time to help with BF, but couldn't in the end.

Had a sweep at 40+2 and a very "heated" debate with the consultant about induction which ended up with me refusing to be put in the diary to be induced - i was quite happy to go in every day for a scan - I share Tinks view that babies will come out when they are "cooked" (side note has anyone else heard that in France they have supposed chnaged full-term to 41 weeks?) - and then my waters broke (or so i thought - turns out it was only the forewaters) about 3am 2 days later, but as it was very red I phoned the delivery suite like we'd been told to in all our classes and they told us to go in. Was montitored for a bit, everything was fine and then they kept me in as in classes we'd been told that we'd been sent home if not in estblished labour. Anyway all day had niggly pains like period pains, got worse and more reg over night and then just as I was having breakfast the next morning my waters really broke 3 times!! - flooded the ward each time as well, was very glad not to be at home or in the car for this . Then it really started hurting was put on the monitor and when the MW exmined me I was 8cm dilated and then rushed to delivery only stopping to phone DH to tell him to come in!! DS was born about 3hrs later - I did have lots of stitches as he had a very big head, but I don't really remember it hurting that much (I tihnk my active birth yoga helped with breathing & realxation) Refused to have the injection to manage 3rd stage or have the cord cut till it stopped pulsating as I thought I done the rest naturally (well maybe some gas & air) so I might as well finish without any help.

I do think there is a lots to be said for having the right frame of mind and being relaxed and going with your body, but then before you all shout at me, obvioulsy there are many occassions when things don't go as planned and so intervention is needed. I also think that different people have different pain thresholds and so a pain that I might think was quite mild and just ignore another mum might think is excruciating.

Anyway must do some work now as I seem to have written an essay - sorry

KazzaL · 28/08/2008 09:38

forgot to say - I saw a consultant at my hosp the other week and not only could he barely speak english (eastern european chap) but he didn't have a clue about procedures as at the end of the appt he said to have next appt in 6 weeks, which I queried and then luckily the MW agreed and so my next appt now at the hosp is after my due date apart from my scan as all my care will be done by the community MW. I'm difficult as I've opted for a hosp that is out of my area even though it is the one closest to my home

I just hope if things turn out that I need to see a consultant later on or during the birth that I don't see this chap

dinkystinky · 28/08/2008 09:53

Gosh, what a lot of messages....

Rosieposey - speak to your GP as Tink has suggested; I also suggest asking your GP about counselling (as it really does help dissociate one negative experience from your current positive one). Hope all will be well and please dont drive yourself crazy worrying about all this - not good for you!

Nadsss - please try not to stress; there is no reason why your darling child's birth will not be a positive story. Just be informed and relaxed and all will be well.

Dinkymum - welcome to the thread. My son's nickname is my threadname too! Everyone is just going to be very specific about which Dinky they are speaking to....

Tumteetum -good luck for your test results. Both you and Dinkymum should copy latest list (off Tink's earlier email) and insert your details in there and repost so we can keep track of all the Feb-to-be babies.

rosieposey · 28/08/2008 10:32

Dinky (stinky) i intend to - will ask about counselling but the consultant seemed to think it was too late for that and that i should have had it after the birth - still will see what the GP says and also if they think its worth referring me to another consultant ( would prefer that tbh )

TinkerBellesMum · 28/08/2008 10:39

Calico, it?s because the muscles they cut through are the ones that support the back, even though they don?t cut the muscles they go between them, it still affects them. GA is General Anaesthetic, they didn?t have time to do an epidural and the physio said it was a good job because that would have added to my problems as it?s that area the needle goes in where I have a problem. I know a lot of women who suffer with their back years later because they had an epidural.

Nadsss at my hospital we can?t use the birth centre if we are complicated but there is still a pool in every delivery room whether it?s birth centre or delivery suite. There is no reason with a first baby and a straightforward pregnancy not to have a MW led birth and a waterbirth if you want one. Definitely get the book because it will make you feel empowered to do things your way.

Just to let the newbies know and anyone else who hasn?t emailed me yet, I?m keeping a map of where we all are, if you email me (my id @ymail.com) and let me know your id, I?ll send you an invite so you can add yourself.

TinkerBellesMum · 28/08/2008 10:43

rosie, it's never too late to have counselling. I'm seeing someone at the moment to sort out my experiences and some of it is back to childhood and I'm still trying to sort out Tink's birth and the resulting PNI. I do worry if you don't sort out your last birth experience you could end up with another bad experience and possibly PNI.

Neeerly3 · 28/08/2008 10:57

hey girls - not had time to catch up on all of your posts, but I've had my comeuppance - last week had gained a total of 3lbs in the 13 weeks of pregs - this week alone i gained 6lbs....so think i defo tempted fate last week!

Bit of advice needed - my lower bump aches, REALLY badly. I am weeing a lot (which i was expecting), but am worried that I have a UTI. I'm on some cystitis relief sachets since last night, but i am still aching down there and just feel like I have a permanently full bladder. No burning when i wee though, which are my usual symptoms. Is bady just lying on bladder and making things uncomfy?

dinkystinky · 28/08/2008 11:46

Neerly - if you're getting pains, speak to your Gp and get it checked out. Should clear up v quickly with treatment if a UTI (whci it sounds like it might be) - ensure you drink lots of fluids and keep peeing lots (not that you need reminding when pregnant and off to the loo every 5 seconds anyway!). Think Cranberry juice is also supposed to help relieve UTIs... Commiserations on the sudden weight gain too (though all for a good cause )

Rosie - never too late for counselling. If you've got emotional scars, you need counselling - and your GP should be sympathetic to that.

Would update again with my correct due date - 18 Feb -but as have done that 6 times now will just remain with 20 Feb (near enough!)

TinkerBellesMum · 28/08/2008 12:14

Neerly, see your doctor, UTI's need checking out in pregnancy. Cranberry juice is good for UTI's but is a blood thinner so don't take it if you're on Aspirin (just a general word of caution for anyone reading).

I keep getting not really pain, but discomfort low on my bum. I feel like I'm due on all the time, I've even had to go to the toilet a couple of times to make sure I'm not bleeding I've been that convinced! I don't remember feeling like this before, is anyone else having this feeling?

MrsThreads, you've used an old list!

TinkerBellesMum · 28/08/2008 12:15

So has Neerly cause my details aren't updated!

BTW, forgot to say I just had a call from the journalist, Bella want to run an article on me now! I'm still waiting on The Mirror - apparently they have a little backlog to get through.

lol dinky

for those of you who don't feel like trawling the internet for info on vit k here are the main issues involved.

vit k stops blood clotting, babies are born with 'low' levals of vit k (low in this case is determined in comparison to normal adult levals ). in between 1 in 10000 and 1 in 25000 babies there is a potential to develope a serious brain clot that results in brain damage or death. this is totally preventable by the vit k injection.

however, the injection is 20000 times the necessary dose, carries a risk of allergic reaction, is intra muscular so very painful and is not as necessary as believed.

the facts are;

babies born after traumatic deliveries, born premature or born by caesarian section are the ones who are really at risk of the blood clotting disorder, so if your baby falls in this category the benefits outweigh the risk and vit k is a beneficial prophylactic.

if you plan on breastfeeding and breastfeed colustrum immediately after the birth the baby receives a natural dose of vit k form the colostrum, especially if the mother has been boosting her own leval pre and post birth. the mother dosing up works the same as the oral vit k but allows both mother and babies bodies to ingest the vit k naturally and deliver a regulated safe dose in the normal way, ie via the gut.

vit k is involved in cell generation in utero which is why the placenta doesn't pass it to baby and babies are born with 'low' levals. this is where the cancer link comes in. some studies have found a link, others dispute this, yet others say there is a risk but it only doubles the babies chance of developing leukemia (which realistically isn't alot considering how few children get leukemia). in my mind this isn't good enough though and if it potentially causes one kind of damage, what other harm could it do?

vit k also increases the risk of jaundice in babies.... both my children were jaundiced anyway, dd severly. on day 2 she didn't wake to feed for 16 hours and was almost readmitted to hospital. if she'd had vit k she undoubtably would have been and would have had to undergo treatment in SCBU.

my choice knowing all this is to dose myself up with vit k (it's in preg vits anyway), feed colostrum immediatly and often and keep dosing myself after birth. if something goes wrong with the delivery or baby is early i will allow the vit k as that is the only time i feel it's necessary.

if you formula feed the formula contains very high levals of vit k so baby is also protected.

all they tell you in hospital though is 'your baby could die of a blood clot if you don't give this'

PT, I thought about it last time but having Tink so early I didn't get chance to put much thought into it.

I'm on Heparin and Aspirin, so I wasn't sure whether the baby would really need VitK as well. But then they give Heparin instead of Warfarin (anticoagulant of choice) because it doesn't cross the placenta. And having a clotting condition myself she is at higher risk of having it too. Having a premature baby I didn't give her the first feed anyway. I was happier to give her Dalivit and Sytron than I would have been if she was term because she missed out on it during pregnancy. Not sure which way to go with it.

Ok - everyone use Tink's latest list then.

DS has a traumatic delivery so said yes to Vitamin K injection. Ultimately I think it comes down to each parent, and the method of their baby's arrival, to decide if they want to go for the Vit K injection or not (your child, your decision) but you will get pressure from the midwives/doctors on the point.

PinkTulips · 28/08/2008 13:14

that's what irritates me, with dd they asked, i said no and that was fine.

with ds i was yelled at less than an hour after giving birth, dp was told i was endangering our baby, i had 3 doctors the next day tell me my baby was in danger and i needed to change my decision and that my baby had a 'high risk' of developing a blood clot now (normal delivery of healthy full term baby meant that risk was proably less than 1 in 50000 )

if the parents were allowed to make the decision aware of all the facts and that decision was respected it would be fine, what's unacceptable risk to me because of the jaundice issue, would pan out as acceptable to another parent as the cancer risk is realistically extraordinarily low and there are no proofs as yet it causes any other proplems.

it's this bullying by the healthcare professionals and only giving half the story that upsets me. i had to sign consent forms saying i was aware i was endangering my baby before i could go home

at least in this hospital it's the other way around, on my hospital notes i have to sign consent or they can't give vit k.

LittleMissNorty · 28/08/2008 13:24

Hello everyone

Vit K can be given to the LO orally as well in 3 doses.....I didn't choose that way, but people should be aware of all the methods / benefits / risks so the choice is informed.

Had my first proper MW appointment today and heard heartbeat for the first time ...140bpm....is that fast / slow? boy/girl?

Calico1 · 28/08/2008 13:29

I feel really naive about the whole vit K thing...wasn't aware of the issues so just agreed at the time. Shocked at how you were treated PinkTulips, there really should be access to all the pros and cons as NHS viewpoint can be pretty narrow.

Tink - thanks for the info about the stomach muscles and support for the back. It makes a lot of sense - a physio spent a lot of time with me after the birth working on how to build up the core support muscles that run around the middle. Didn't help the fabby tummy though!

PinkTulips · 28/08/2008 13:52

don't blame the NHS for that one, blame UCHG Galway and their dastardly ways at this same hospital there is a 33% c section rate

thank god my new hospital seems much better as i prob won't be able to afford a HB
