twinklytoes · 03/08/2008 07:10

wow yoummum what a birth experience! I would have wanted to leave straight away aswell and certainly wouldn't be going back. I'm so lucky here - the midwives are all pretty supportive, oh except the ward manager whos abit old school - I had the "well you're a woman, you can bf" comments with dd1. thankfully she's rarely on the ward nowadays due to the nhs' love for paperwork.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/08/2008 08:32

What a horrible birth experience YumMum - can totally understand why you don't want to go through that again. Can I ask which hospital/area that was in?

OP posts:
jenwa · 03/08/2008 11:17

yumMum22 that is awful, I really hope that you do get the birth you want and deserve this time, it will at least make you more determined and speak out when you you have had a shit exoerience. Fingers crossed for you.

star6 · 03/08/2008 12:16

YumMum22 - what a horrible story!! where is this hospital? I want to make sure it's not my area.
Anyone else - do you know if that's normal that your husband can't stay with you in a regular ward either before or after the baby is born?
As if the whole idea of giving birth weren't terrifying enough... then they make the only person you really want around LEAVE? WHY can't he stay and be with the baby and I afterward? I hope this isn't true for all hospitals... I don't think i can cope without an epidural and couldn't cope with mess so homebirth option is out, but I need dh there before, during and after.

jenwa · 03/08/2008 12:26

My Dh stayed with me until after I returned from theatre and went to post natel ward. It was 1 am so they suggested he went home and we all got some sleep. They never made him go home at any other stage.

star6 · 03/08/2008 13:01

Thanks, jenwa. It's so funny how the littlest comments can send a pregnant woman into such an anxious spin! Feeling less stressed now... Btw - the photos of your little girl are gorgeous!!!

jenwa · 03/08/2008 13:15

It is scary isn't it. So many different stories and it does panic you. I think you get an idea in your head about what you want and what to expect and things dont always aturn out that way (or you hear bad things) and it worries you. I am hoping that I can fall asleep and my baby will be next to me when I wake up No such luck hey!!!

Well as far as DD, she looks like butter wouldn't melt! She has been on a sticker chart recently as been being a bit of a monster (she will be 3 in Oct so think its what they call the terrible twos!). On the whole she is lovely and very cuddly at the moment but she does have a quick temper (prob like me and my dad!) !!!!
Thank you for your comment though, it is nice when someone says that about your child

YumMum22 · 03/08/2008 15:00

its newham general hospital in east london. ive heard loads of horrible stories bout this hospital. i think with most hospitals they dont let visitors in after the visitin periode is over but i dont think it should be the same with natal wards though..

i really hope i get my home birth..im not worried about the mess and stuff as the midwives help you to clean up afterwards and also hopefully i will be having a water birth. the idea of having a baby and then gettin into my own bed with my newborn and dh is just the best.

pepperrabbit · 03/08/2008 15:33

Afternoon all, baby is very busy here too, constantly leaping around practising Riverdance as far as I can tell!
Also breech at the mo - they've started writing it on my notes which is disconcerting as I didn't think it mattered for a few weeks yet.
No chance of a homebirth here for various reasons and tbh I don't think I'd want one. Our hsopital is good, though obviously overcrowded and midwives overworked, but if you needed them, there was always someone to help.
They don't let the dads stay overnight which I don't really have a problem with - I mean it would be nice for MY DH to stay, but don't fancy everyone elses being in the ward! - there's just so much nasty girly stuff going on - I remember someone elses DH staring at me last time when I had to rush off to the loo bleeding and that was just horrid.
I had one of those cheery emails from babycentre or somewhere, with the jolly comment about putting on another 11 lbs beofre LO arrives.... where on earth am I going to put that!

bethoo · 03/08/2008 20:38

pepperrabbit i am gaining tht a week at the mo with my poor diet! decided that when hit ten stone mark i am going to cut out the crap!
i wish my son would eat all his tea instead of feeding the dog! , ds not gaining weight but dog is!
dp annoying the crao out of me, gettin to the stage now where i cant bear to be with him!

ronshar · 03/08/2008 21:14

I shouldnt suggest this as a bit irresponsible but if you try to labour at home for as long as you can you could always phone for an ambulance! Speaking as someone who used to do it as a job, they are all trained to deal with almost every possible issue and also if it is going a bit wrong they will egt you to hospital quicker than you could get yourself!
You are never left to deliver on your own. The midwife on duty will always phone for ambulance if you are close and they have no one to send from unit! Also it is not illegal to deliver on your own it is just a bit mad. Did you watch that channel 5 program recently. Outlaw mothers. Women here and in the states who delivered alone!

ronshar · 03/08/2008 21:16

Looking at the description for perinneal massage, can I use my rabbit? It seems a shame to wear myself out

jenwa · 03/08/2008 21:37

ronshar i was thinking that about staying at home as long as poss if dont have c-sect. At least can do what I want. Smiling too at the rabbit!!!! Sure there should be some pleasure involved

bethoo seems your DP is being a bit of a pain, maybe dont feed him for awhile and get yourself a rabbit too

bethoo · 03/08/2008 21:40

yes i was intending to look in anne summers this weekend but i heard vibrators were unsafe in preg?

jenwa · 03/08/2008 21:58

oh, not heard that before, Suppose it depends on how big they are. They only go where a man goes anyway and women would be more gentle than a man so cant see the harm! You can actually buy just the rabbit bit on its own now so I guess it actually is meant for the outside area anyway, that way no damage , also no conversation, no mess and all in all a happy woman!!!!

bethoo · 03/08/2008 22:45

think it was something more to do with electrical current or something! when i went to a stringfellows party we (the ladies with child!) were advised against even using those head massage things!

bethoo · 03/08/2008 23:20

decided on Maia Jay for new arrival, she will share same middle name as ds as it is the only name that i think goes!
am i the only one awake? i am waiting for the washing to finsihs so can put it on my airer!

Jambers99 · 04/08/2008 09:42

Morning everyone!

CSWS - belated happy birthday for Friday, hope you had a lovely day. Our building works at stalled at the moment, still waiting for the council to make a decision on our plans. They were supposed to decide by 15th July, but the only decision was to refer it to a committee. We're still waiting to hear when the committee might be, and whether the recommendation is to approve or deny our application. Very frustrating.

Tedmundo - I agree about our parallel lives! My ds also has trouble eating, he's eating some lumpier foods now but is quite fussy, and is right at the bottom end of all the growth charts.

I'm finally reaching the 28 week milestone now so I get to see the midwife again - haven't seen her since about 10 weeks!

Sallypuss · 04/08/2008 09:52

Morning all

Hope everyone had a good weekend despite the rain...spent ours doing yet more pre-baby diy chores - I'll be glad when they're all done so I can put my feet up. Noticing that I'm tiring more easily now - had to stop gardening a number of times yesterday so I could sit down.

Went for our 4D scan on Friday, lovely photos - LO was sucking their thumb for most of the time - so sweet. We also found out for sure that it's a girl . DH is a little disappointed that it's not the son he was hoping for but I'm quite chuffed that it's going to be a little mini-me (in fact I keep getting all misty-eyed at the most inopportune moments like when I was wedged up against someone's armpit on the tube this morning!!!).

hansnava · 04/08/2008 10:04

morning ladies

is ne one else feeling really heavy and bloated at the minute? for the past few days ive felt like lead, i just cant seem to get the energy to lift myself up. maybe im just getting lazy. lol at ronshar thats a good idea maybe i'll give it a go considering i cant even reach down there to shave i dont think i will be able to reach down there for that

still havent got a clue about names. went through a name website last night writing a list of all the names i like. we r stuck for a boy. for girls i like sophia and he likes daisy. so im thinking it will be easier if its a girl although dp is desperate foe a son lol. at least if its a girl she will have some hope of having a name.

hansnava · 04/08/2008 10:11

p.s has ne had ne experience at taking a 3yr old to the dentist. ive book me and dd in to see dentist next tuesday and since this is dd first visit im a bit worried about how she will be, she wouldnt even let the dr look at her throat when she was ill a few weeks ago.

1sttimer80 · 04/08/2008 10:20

Yummum wow that it an experience!! Fingers crossed you won't have to go through all that again. I hadn't even thought about my husband not being there with me!

Thanks for advice re pjamas v/s nightdress!

Also would it be useful to get a hospital bag list up here which we can all keep adding to? I know I might find this useful not sure if others would?

hansnava: i wasn't sure what I felt last night... it was sort of heartburn but then couldn't decide if I was hungry so ended up having a cold glass of milk in the middle of the night which helped me get some sleep. The little one was very very hyper as well so not had much of a rest.

I hear that the perineal massage is supposed to be really good.. but like you mentioned hansava, I don't think I've seen my lady bits in months!

Lozza70 · 04/08/2008 11:27

Morning everyone and hope you had a good weekend. I had a busy one with my family over from N Ireland which was lovely if a little exhausting as my neice is 15 months and into everything. Marnie is adorable but I don't know how those of you with LO's are coping with the kids and the bump!

On the subject of hospital bags my sister brought me everything she thought I would need for the baby's bag and a few bits for my hospital bag as this is my first -

Baby bag
Nappies
Cotton wool balls
Baby wash
Baby wash sponge
Baby oil
Hat
Booties
Sleepsuit with scratch mits
Dummies - in case of not breastfeeding

Mum bag
Maternity pads - more than you will ever think you need apparently
Disposable knickers
Shower Gel - teatree oil
Shower sponge
Breast pads

I'm sure there is loads more to add. I was thinking for the Mum bag, camera, nightie, antiseptic wipes(in case the hosp facilites are not very clean), food............

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/08/2008 12:10

Lozza - you don't need baby wash or baby oil. Babies need nothing but water on their skin for the first few months, so all baby toiletries are a con!

For your bag, add arnica, and start taking it a few days before you expect to give birth. Massively reduces bruising down there. Search archives for more info.

Am a happy woman today - baby is no longer breech . Growth is all fine - no fat tummy at all so far (risk from diabetes).

OP posts:
caramelbunny · 04/08/2008 12:55

Oh, I hadn't heard that vibrators were unsafe (sadly puts rabbit back in box and wipes away the tears).

Still celebrating my realigned pelvis, it's feeling really good now (3 weeks on) and I've been enjoying swimming and just being able to walk and sleep comfortably. You got yourself sorted Lozza? YumMum, your birth story sounds horrible and in many respects similar to mine. It still upsets me now to think about it and I too am hoping for a nice relaxing home birth this time.

Really like Maia bethoo, think it's a lovely name. Hansnava I also like Sophia. My favourite girls name is Megan but my cousin has recently called his daughter Megan so I feel it's no longer an option.
