Over here in France women are not discouraged at all from eating pasterised dairy products - quite the opposite - it's seen as a good source of calcium, so I don't think you need worry one bit Potxola.
Different thing totally, but has anyone heard of this "Strep B" test, I had an internal swab test done by the obst. last week and just started to wonder what exactly it was (bit late in the day to start wondering now doh!) has anyone had one/heard of it? Never had it with DS I don't think...
Well DH & DS are still camping, so I ought to go and make myself some dinner....what I actually would like to do is strip off totally and jump into the massive paddling pool we have for the gite guests (they might be a little bit suprised, I look a bit like diplodocus without the tail or the long neck obviously!!)

jennylindinha · 27/07/2008 18:52

I keep finding out that cetain cheeses are "bad" only after I've eaten them loads! Like feta for one, I eat tons of it. Mind you, most of it is pasteurised anyway.

The heat has been maddening. Went shopping in town with DSD whilst DP was working (on a Sat - grrrr) and we ate a picnic in Somerset House while DSD ran madly through the water fountains there! Really good fun but after eating I had a funny turn and had to lie down for a bit - I really thought I was going to pass out or throw up (or both!) We think it was just low blood pressure but it was a bit unsettling. Much better today and we've just been to the local lido for a couple of hours. Sheer bliss to be in the water! Mmmm. Lol at diplodocus jenpet!

By the way, Group B Strep is a fairly common bacteria that around 25-30% of women have in their vagina. Normally, it doesn't cause problems but if the bacteria multiply it's easily treated with antibiotics. However, if you are pregnant and test positive for Strep B around 37 weeks then you might be offered/need antibiotics by IV when you give birth so that you don't pass the infection to your baby. I think it is quite rare for carriers to pass the infection on in this way, but it can be quite serious for the baby. More info is here www.gbss.org.uk/ I tested positive for it a couple of years ago and was warned that if I got pregnant I should let the midwife know that I'd had it before so they could test me.

carrieon, I've never heard of a clot on the cervix. Sounds scary... I hope your poor friend is ok and that someone wiser comes along with some advice.

carrieon · 27/07/2008 19:12

The thing I always tell myself with unpasteurised cheese etc, is that its not the cheese itself that's inherently bad, its that if it had listeria, that would be bad for you. So provided you trust the source of the cheese and its been stored well, then it should be fine. Ditto rare steak, not that I'd make a habit of eating it, but if you had some you haven't automatically done harm to your baby (in my understanding). The only thing to totally avoid is pate and liver due to high vitamin A.

meglet · 27/07/2008 19:27

oh, I think I'm the only one enjoying this weather [sings "the sun has got his hat on!"]. However DP hates it and is in a foul mood and DS is bad tempered. I get cold really easily so all warm weather cheers me up. That said I have got a bottle of frozen water in the freezer that i can sip from every so often, I'm not drinking tea or anything daft!

Had a good day today, plucked my eyebrows and tidied & swept up the patio so we could eat outside. It was lovely until DS started throwing food and DP got in a stress about it.

poxtola re:soft cheese. I think you need to look at the odds of getting listeria, which are very very low. I eat soft cheese all the time when i'm not pregnant and have never got listeria, so the chances of it are almost zero. I don't eat it when I'm pregnant though as I tend to be a bit neurotic, but will be getting my mum to make me a brie sandwich to bring to the hospital as soon as I've had DD .

Hello..anyone else got chest pains?? From shoulder blades through the front of the chest??

Just me???

luboo · 27/07/2008 20:25

Hi!
Haven't been on for a long while but wondered if anyone has any experience of having a breech baby turned? I am 32 weeks and baby is breech. Obvosuly still time to turn but if it doesn't my instinct is NOT to have it turned. I don't like the soud of it and am not against a C-Section. Think this is because my first labour was very difficult (back to back) and has left me terrified of doing it again. Am I mad?

Hi starlight...just had some gaviscon but doesnt seem to be helping. Had it for a couple of days now.....

eandz · 27/07/2008 20:56

kiskidssee,
your more than welcome to contact me anytime you want.

i'll be there in october after baby is born for a month.. it looks like we'll be spending close to 3-4 months there but it'll be one month on and then 2/3 months back in the uk and then so on. we'll also have to spend one entire month in the states (which i am SOO happy about!!!)

so let me know about anything you need to know about, and i'll be able to find out for you or tell you right away.

Kagey · 27/07/2008 20:57

Hi Luboo,

I'm in a similar situation at the moment; baby has been breech for 5 weeks now so I am being sent for a scan on Wednesday to check her position again, and if the little darling has not moved, I'm seeing a Consultant to discuss options. I am really hoping turning will work if she is still breech, but my mum told me I was successfully turned so I am feeling positive that a c-section will not have to be an option.

Best wishes to everyone!
Kx

ooh starlight,
i wanted to go to that slingshow soo bad but my mothers sister (who recently moved to london) and my husbands aunt were having separate but equally important events today so we had to go to those all day. ugh!

i love the bloomsbury area. i used to live there and it was the funnest time i've ever had while in london. ever.

jenpet · 27/07/2008 21:10

Thank you Jennylindinha for the info and link on Group strep B. that's really useful. I did ask what it was for at the time, and explained I had never had it in the UK 1st time around, but the obst. seems to think the nhs generally is beneath discussion!

carrieon · 27/07/2008 21:16

becaroo I've had some chest pains - I'm sure in my case its the rib cage expanding and the ligaments straining. Today I had to move which hooks my bra was on coz its getting too tight with the expanding ribs. They kinda have to flare outwards to accommodate the growing baby rising further up your abdomen. Def worth mentioning to your mw though.

People keep saying to me 'oh you must be so uncomfortable in the heat' but I always reply by saying a) I'm uncomfortable coz i have spd and b) I'd rather be pregnant than have a newborn in a heatwave. Seems to shut them up!

jearund · 27/07/2008 21:29

I've been suffering today in the heat too. I feel really guilty for complaining as I usually complain it's too cold, but today has been excessive. I took DD out for a walk and to a little play area this afternoon - normally I really enjoy our walks but every step was hard work and I was exhausted when I came back in. The outside temp (according to our weather station) was 37.7 when we got back! And this is the UK!

I'll be 32 weeks tomorrow and back to work. 3 weeks to go, which means I'll be 35 weeks when I stop. I think I'll be ready!

I'm wondering what to do about the Strep B thing myself. I know I'm a carrier as I had it when I gave birth last time (it may have been what infected my waters) so may need antibiotics. I am wondering whether to get the private test done at 37 weeks (the NHS is only 50% reliable and they got it wrong last time and gave me a false negative). Presumably if that came back negative I wouldn't need the antibiotics as it would indicate it wasn't currently 'active'.

I would have loved a water birth but even if I don't need antibiotics I don't think that's an option as they don't seem keen to let women have waterbirths if they've previously had a c-section. I'm not sure why but I think it may be because they like to put you under continuous monitoring and can't in the water.

I was feeling quite depressed last night about the birth thing. I was discussing my birth plan with DH and telling him he needs to stick up for me and fight my corner and he basically said that he thinks that the hospital will do what they want anyway and that they are the experts and the NCT shouldn't keep telling people they have all these choices because in the end the NHS will do what's best for the baby. We didn't have a great experience last time as I had an emergency c-section and I just felt no one was listening to me or explaining what was going on. DH thinks the midwives don't actually have that much power and that it's the registrar who had to make the decision about the CS and that's why we weren't told what was happening - because it wasn't up to the midwife. But it's left me quite uneasy about this time.

Starlight last time I had my mum as well as DH which might be an option this time but it depends on when the baby is born as my MIL is coming down (from Scotland) to look after DD but if the baby comes first my mum will have to look after DD until she gets here. We're not sure when to tell MIL to come. If she comes too early we could have her for weeks if the baby is late! We thought maybe D-Day minus 2?

Last time I really wanted my mum as she was a midwife herself for a few years a very long time ago (over 50 years) and I thought she'd reassure me. Unfortunately she was more interested in chatting to the m/w and I think that may have contributed to no one telling me what was going on! The mw was quite old and definitely old school. My mum thought she was great. I thought she was awful! So DH and I are a bit reticent about having her involved again. I definitely wouldn't want my MIL even if she wasn't already looking after DD as she "doesn't do sympathy" and I can't imagine her being much help! I'd probably just shout at her.

DH seems to think that he has a direct choice between holding my hand/ pressing the boost button on the TENS machine etc and being out of the room arguing with the mw. I can't see why he would need to be out of the room to do that! I think we both feel a bit unprepared really. I wish I'd done the NCT refresher classes in retrospect but until recently I was intending to have an election CS so there didn't seem much point.

Can't afford a doula, trainee or otherwise! Things are a bit tight in the jearund household at the moment. I can't see DH wanting a stranger there anyway tbh. I think what I really want is to know what I can realistically expect then I can be ready for it.

Starlight that does help, thank you. Yes, it's the same hospital. It would be good to talk through my notes with someone so I can understand the decisions they made. They did ask me after the birth if I understood why I'd had a c-section to which I said yes, because I sort of did (both me and baby in distress as I was so ill with high temp and DD had v fast heartbeat) but it was the process that led up to this that I didn't understand and that was why I felt so out of control. I'm seeing the consultant in 2 weeks (34 weeks) so should I ask her then about making an appointment with the head of midwives? Or would the consultant herself go over my notes with me at the appointment?

I just can't stand this heat. Woke up at 4 and couldn't go back to sleep because it was stifling and hot. So I ended up on the sofa watching baby programs until dd woke up at7. I really hope it will get cooler soon.

mustsleep · 28/07/2008 09:07

morning everyonesorry to hear about all the heat sufferers i can totally sympathise it was just too hot yesterday!! today it looks a bit overcast here but think it;s still going to be sticky later on!well i got no sleep last night at all and at one point was seriuosly thinking we were going to have to go to hospital as my bh's were that strong my stomach as completely tensing up with each one which were coming at 5 min intervals eventually they stopped and i think that the head is not engaged yet anyway but it was still scary and a final push me thinks for me to sort out my hospital bag just incase!
