Surely, glad I have kept you entertained with my traumas! Went for a drink with colleague and baby and was not required to hold it again. Colleague was also very nice and gave some (actually quite sensible) bits of advice, mostly about ignoring any advice I get given! Alaro I had almost exactly that happen at a party a few weeks ago as well. Was horrendously embarrassing. Am glad that at least I can (fingers crossed) rely on my baby to quite like me!

Starlight sorry to hear about your HB drama. Will it be too difficult for you to keep fighting, while accepting inside that you might go to hospital? That way you might get a breakthrough and get your G&A etc, but if not then you're prepared for hospital. Can complettely understand if you can't face that, as you seem to have had an uphill struggle the whole way for the HB.

How horrendous Starlight? Even if you do end up giving up, you should definitely go to the local press with your story when you feel up to it - it is appalling that they are basically going against national policy to encourage homebirths, simply by refusing to allow you the (most basic of all) drugs to get through a birth.

I assume there's nowhere it's possible to order in G&A from privately?

Why is it that they will only provide 20 mins G&A? Surely there is no one in the world who's labour will only last 20 mins? Except possibly a bucket...

It still seems ridiculous that you can't get a cast iron guarantee of at least having enough G&A, how depressing. Really hope you manage to get your head around whatever you do end up planning and can feel as positive as possible about it. It would be great if you can go to the press about it at some point when you feel up to it (after the birth probably!), as even if you don't want to go through all the details again, they can follow it up with the PCT and maybe improve someone else's chances of a HB in future by publishing a story.

jennylindinha · 23/07/2008 15:25

Starlight, I'm sorry to hear all the trouble you are having. It really is unfair! I'm still trying to sort out my HB too and haven't heard back from the CMs at the hospital. 2 other teams are fully booked... I do feel that I left it late though whereas you have been requesting yours for a long time.

If it is any consolation (prob not...) my sister had her first baby at the Edgware unit and she loved it. She said they were brilliant and lovely. She ended up having the baby in the pool even though that wasn't her original plan. They only stayed a few hours afterwards for a snooze and then were back home with realtive ease. Not the same as home, but better than the hospital...

Surely - you are right, there is always something for us to worry about! Glad I'm not the only one with a "petite" bump. It never stops moving though so baby must be ok in there.

potxola · 23/07/2008 15:53

I found you. I posted this in the old thread.
kiskidee many thanks for the information. Iwill take the doc. with me. I had to hand express while my son was in the NICU,but I don't remember a thing aboit it. It was a really tough time, but I managed to do it.

jearound What worked for my son after sleeping only in cotbed and grobags was toddler bed or single bed with a duvet secured with DUVET CLIPS, GET THEM FROM jo jo maman bebe with the 10% discount. They are completely safe and the duvet does not move. I can't recommend it enough. trust me.

YESSSSSSSSSSS

Sassafrass · 23/07/2008 15:59

I saw the consultant again and finally got some straight answers. She recommended an elective ceasarian due to the cord and possibly other vessels by the cervix coupled with my previous history. So, the baby will be born on 19th of August, which is just under 4 weeks away! I'm really excited and while I wanted to have a normal birth I'm also relieved to know for sure what's going to happen.

OMG Sassafrass, that's really soon!

Sassafrass · 23/07/2008 16:23

I know! 3 weeks and 5 days. I'll be 38weeks, 2 days. It's slightly earlier than they recommend because the consultant want to minimise the risk of my waters breaking before the section.

kiskidee · 23/07/2008 16:25

My Little Lamb bamboo nappies have arrived. They are so cute and so soft.

DD is psyched. She has one on her teddy already and is changing him for at least the third time in an hour.

Work is really boring. And I knackered myself posting a load of recorded delivery letters yesterday (insert rant about closed local post offices and the crappy inaccessible replacement one in WHSmiths here).

Currently worrying about being left alone on the postnatal ward - I'm absolutely terrified of people walking in on me unexpectedly and given that you can't knock on curtains and I'm deaf, that's going to happen unless I get MrNC or one of his backups to stay with me at all times. Which means arguing against hospital policy about people staying overnight, and I'm not sure I've got the energy. Actually I know I don't - let's hope my partners do.
Probably ought to just go back to bed but then I'll worry about not getting work done...

Bah. My body's definitely running out of space for Squirmy. Saw my first stretchmarks 2 days ago.

Sassafrass · 23/07/2008 16:52

Notcitrus, check with your hospital to see if you can pay to have a private room. That way, even if MrNC has to go home, people will knock on the door and you'll still have some privacy.

I was on a ward with dd1 and found it was too hot and stifling to have the curtains shut so ended up having htem open most of the time anyway, and that was in january.

Starlight really sorry to hear of your troubles....I have heard good things re: mw led units though....

Sassafrass How exciting!!!

Keep getting a strange urge to defrost the chest freezer...had it with ds too and he was born 5 days later

notcitrus · 23/07/2008 18:21

I don't think there are any private rooms at Georges (and even so I'd hate to be alone). The back of my notes says We have a strict visiting policy Partners 10am-8pm, others 3pm-8pm. Does say 'In exceptional circs, partners wishing to visit outside these hours may negotiate with the midwife in charge' - guess I will have to arrange in advance.

You can't guarantee getting into the MLU as it's strictly triaged. Ah well, back to the talents of my partnering team of politely refusing to leave, but implies it might be hard for them to swap over.

Time for another nap I think - I've just ordered a Tesco delivery for tomorrow (using discount codes from MN!), so at least I'll have a selection of effort-free food soon. And I was in Oxfam yesterday to stock up on chocolate (seemed like an idea before facing the Post Office), looked round to see if there was anything else rather than just buy enough chocolate to be able to use my credit card, and found an unopened pack of cot sheets from Mothercare, which was one thing we needed!
Sheets and chocolate - sounds like a good start for dealing with a baby...

mustsleep · 23/07/2008 19:21

wow!! this moves so fast!

sassfrass have always got a blood pressure of around 100/60 the last one being slightly higher at 120/65 but habe no idea if this is high normal or what- it is what it was at at my first check and has been the same through out my two other pregnancies so must be normal for me

we have been to brid all day today and it has been glorious a really nice day for it but am knackered now
thnk i will have a quiet day tomorrow, hpefully it will be nice and the kids can play in the garden

notcitrus i gave birth the first two times in hospital and with ds i had to stay in but think that was because he wouldn;t latch on and was my first
with dd i gave birth at 3am and was onmy way out the door by 2.30pm and i only had to wait so long as it seems to take them ages to organise anti d

could you get it written into your notes about people not walking in on you?

jearund · 23/07/2008 19:50

potxola I've found them on the JoJo site. How many do I need for a single duvet and how many come in a packet?

carrieon · 23/07/2008 20:15

Oooh I'm excited we're talking nappies again! I have microfibre, cotton and bamboo. Bamboo are my faves - really soft and highly absorbant, but take ages to dry. They have natural anti-bac properties too I believe. The microfibre ones are the most likely to have leakage issues for us (dd does powerwees) but they dry in an instant. They are the ones we use most.
My only complaint with the little lambs is that you often have to change the wrap with every nappy change as they're soaked through too, but otherwise they're great.

Can't remember who said about using biodegradables...apologies for me going on a little rant but all the info I've ever read about them says that unless you compost them then you're wasting your money and thinking you're saving the environment when you're not. If they go in regular landfill, there isn't the oxygen for them to biodegrade, so you might aswell use cheaper, more absorbant regular disposables. Sorry!

kiskidee · 23/07/2008 20:21

I am worried about the length of time it will take the LL bamboos to dry because I am a laundry, no, housekeeping slattern. But i am determined to mend my ways! I do like how the elastic seems strong but stretchy and is completely covered with fabric. I have one eczema prone dd already.

Carrieon, would you recommend Motherease wraps with the LL nappies?
