I normally am a complete heat lover, but I am not coping with it nearly as well while pregnant - keep getting sunburned (think my skin is more sensitive for some reason), and feeling really weak and pathetic after more than an hour or so in the sun! DP has borrowed a fan from his mum, which I am loving in my cramped little study/nursery today.

jearund I agree with Starlight that it would be good to talk over your notes - even if nothing is 'officially' resolved, you should have a bit more understanding of what led to the c-section, so you can at least understand a bit more any decisions that are made in labour this time, and perhaps your DP will be more able to stand up for you if you feel the wrong decision is being made.

Am going to order last couple of things from online shop for hospital bag today, and then I can actually pack it! Although half of it's currently in a plastic bag, because I'm planning on using the changing bag that I haven't ordered yet as the hospital bag! There is a definite shortage of small holdalls in the hopefully household...

mumiyumi · 28/07/2008 10:05

Morning all
Haven't been on for a while as we were away camping...which was good but sleeping proved to be a touch uncomfortable! Ds had the time of his life so that made it for me!

Can't believe how long it takes to catch up with these threads...can't remember anything i've read now though!

Finished work now so really need to get organised with baby bits and packing my bag, baby was breech at last mw visit so a section has been mentioned which is starting to scare me.

eandz Names are so difficult as everyone has an opinion...not always good unfortunately, DS was set in stone from early on which is Caleb, but really struggling this time but gonna keep it quiet until little person arrives!

Sorry to have gone on a bit....it's gonna be another hot hot hot day!

izzybiz · 28/07/2008 10:15

Morning!
Another hot and sunny day here in Winchester!

I tested positive for Group B Strep in my last pregnancy, was given IV antibiotics in labour, allthough they are supposed to be in the system at least 4 hours before birth, Dd was born in under 2 1/2!

I've been told by the midwife that I wont be able to use the pool because of the IV, so I am thinking of asking cosultant to swab me at 37 weeks and hoping I will be negative.

I don't mind staying in for a couple of days for Bob to be monitered after birth, I would quite like the rest!!

We haven't really discussed names yet, I really like Max, but Kerry Katona has put me off abit!
Also like Harry, HEnry and Jack.
I want something that goes with my older two, Toby and Isabelle.
Any suggestions?!!

Nelli32 · 28/07/2008 10:32

Hi there - I am 34 weeks on friday (due Sept 12th) and for the last few days I have noticed a definite drop in the number of fetal movements. Has anyone else experienced this? I have spoken to the midwife who says that if I am worried to ring the hospital to go in and be monitored but am unsure how worried you have to be before you go down that route. Everyone has such different information about how many fetal movements you should be able to count in a certain amount of time, feeling a little confused with it all and was hoping you all may be able to help. I do feel the baby throughout the day just not as much as I used to!

Many thanks for your help
x

potxola · 28/07/2008 10:33

Kiskidee I live very close to Lympstone, 20 min. We drove yesterday by the army quarters. It is huge!!!!!

The labour ward in the hospital in Exeter is new and fantastic. Just in case!

Sassafrass · 28/07/2008 10:46

Nelli32, I've been told 10 movements in 12 hours. I've found that around 34 weeks the baby is running out of room to do proper big kicks and get mostly squirming kind of movements. If I were you I'd just call your antenatal health unit though and get monitored. It'll take a couple of hours at the most and then you'll have peace of mind.

mustsleep · 28/07/2008 10:47

when do you think that pains ie stomach contractiony type pains should be reason to call or visit the midwife?

was up all night and now they have returned this morning?

pretty sure that they are braxton hicks but they are really painful neverhad any in previous two pregnancies and don;t want to waste midwife's time!

Sunshinemummy · 28/07/2008 10:53

Hi *Nelli) if you're at all worried I would definitely go in. I think the official time is 10 distinct movements in 12 hours but if I was worried I'd just head on down. They'll hook you up for about half an hour and check the baby moving.

Jearund I've done the refresher classes and they've definitely been worth it. I too had quite a bad birth with DS which ended in an EMCS, hence my decision to go for an elective this time. It's funny though, as I was so focussed on the outcome of the healthy baby that I've never really thought about the birth until the recent classes. Everyone else's reactions to what we went through has made me realise how bad it actually was - very weird.

Agree re. starlight's suggestion to go and talk it through. Even doing that at NCT has helped me work through what I want to be different this time.

Also disagree with your husband's view - his role is to make sure your views are heard and taken into account and that you are clear what is going on and why. I made this v. clear to DP last time round and he totally took it on board. It might not change the outcome but it should definitely change the way you feel about the outcome.

Our couples NCT session is tomorrow night - am so looking forward to it. Am loving the heat apart from at night. Both DS and I struggled to sleep last night so we're both exhausted this morning. DP's just landed in UK though so he should be home in about an hour - hurrah!

Last three days at work this week too - hurrah hurrah hurrah!

kiskidee · 28/07/2008 10:53

oh, i am not going to devon p. Think it will be too hard for me to get down there just to do nothing. I would rather stay close to my birth pool and my lovely trainee doula.

Girls Thank you for heping me with the worries about cheeses. I feel better about it now
Jempet I lived in France for a couple of years, down Narbone and I remember that pregnant women ate some pate and soft cheeses.
I, Spain they eat chorizo and Jamon and in the Uk it is not allowed either.

Re Strep B I requested a kit from a private clinic and have it done at 35 weeks with my son, just in case.
Jearound I agree with Stralight it is never too early to talk about your past labour with your hospital , doctors and midwives. Re. Strep B, If you had it before, they should know about it to give you the antibiotics if it is a normal birth.
I won't bother this time because it will be a C-section.

Starlight so,you have the CLOSE and the TRICOT,it is very similar to mine, the kari-me. I am not buying anything else !!!!!!!

potxola · 28/07/2008 10:54

kISKIDEE If you ever come down here, let me know.

kiskidee · 28/07/2008 10:56

I will be in Devon in the summer next year! We usually go to Dartmouth for 10 days and sometimes visit friends (ex-Marine buddies and their families) in Exmouth. So if that is your area, then we can combine visits.

mustsleep my BH's are also v. painful this time around. They were almost rhythmic on Sat night and I was convinced the baby might comeearly while DP was 5000 miles away!

mustsleep · 28/07/2008 11:01

sunshine i'n glad it;s not just me if it had just been pains would be one thing but it's like they are timing themselves at regular intervals just to alarm me!!

i think that if i am still having them this afternoon i will at least phone the midwife, i need to give her mr correct phone number anyway

Sunshinemummy · 28/07/2008 11:04

Probably worth getting the reassurance. My obs told me it is totally normal to feel them more during second/third pregnancies.

lollipopmother · 28/07/2008 11:57

Nelli - As we get closer to our EDD fetal movements will decrease because there's simply not enough space in there to move, as the other ladies have said, about 10 movements a day is classed as ok, but if you're still worried go and get it checked out. Personally my baby is still moving at the same times every day as before, but she's moving a bit less.

Sassafrass · 28/07/2008 12:02

I just have to tell you that I've found the comfiest pyjamas ever. I got them from matalan, they're pink and in some soft stretchy material. Not maternity ones, but I bought one size bigger than normal and they fit fine. Should hopefully be good for after the birth as well. The top has a low neckline so will be easy to feed baby in. I think I might just wear them 24/7 =)

notcitrus · 28/07/2008 12:12

sassafrass - you mean Squirmy might start kicking less soon?! He's just over 33 weeks now and has more muscle behind his kicks and punches than I appreciate. Of course I'll probably get to the point where he kicks less and I get BH contractions instead...

Saw community midwife this morning, who was a Supervisor of Midwives and confused that I'd been told to come to her (GP contracts out antenatal care) as from my address I should be seeing a Tommies midwife and should be allowed to the clinic opposite my house (which I was told I couldn't go to because I'm booked at Georges). Need to check to make sure either they or the Georges ones visit me after birth.

Mentioned how I'm really worried about being left alone and being prodded after labour - keeping someone with me would have to be agreed with a head midwife at Georges but she sounded like it could work. Also suggested a homebirth yet again - ironic that I've been offered one at least 4 times and don't want it, while others are having so much trouble getting one! I suspect the overcrowding in London hospitals has been a great incentive - easier to find more midwives than build extra rooms.

So I'll see how the 36-week appt goes, but if they don't put in writing that I can keep someone with me, I may well consider that homebirth after all. The only place to put a pool though is in the kitchen. Which has a whole back wall of windows. And a team of builders on the other side... sounds like it could be an extra incentive for them to finish before I give birth, so they don't have to look at it!

SIL3 has had her ds, in some private hospital, and given the poor kid a stupidly posh name (not Tarquin, but close...) I estimate three days before she or BIL phone up to tell us how the NHS will be putting our baby at risk and we're a pair of Communists and out-of-touch wacko hippies for considering it (SIL1 is beyond the pale for having had a homebirth, despite being the most practical non-hippy ever!). Joy.

mustsleep · 28/07/2008 12:20

have phoned docs and there are no midwifes available today

so phoned the midwifery line on my notes and was given a midwife's mobile number- she just said to go into hospital and get checked out so i am

this will be sooo embarrassing when they just say it's trapped wind or something

but if this carries on all day at least going in will put my mind at rest just don;t want them to think that i'm a time waster!!

plus we will have to take the kids with us which should be fun!

Flumpytigger · 28/07/2008 12:24

Hello ladies,

I have been lurking on your threads since March. You all seem lovely & friendly and you all know so much! I just really wanted to ask your advice on something...

Parent craft classes; how important are they and if we don't go will my hubby & I be really rubbish & useless parents!?

I'm due on 18th September and were booked onto a weekend workshop this weekend. However we wanted to avoid the first day (labour & delivery suite tour etc) as we have been through all of that with our first baby (it's complicated but he was too special for this world so is sadly no longer with us).
We only wanted to attend the second day (breast feeding/changing etc), however we've been told that because there's such a large waiting list it's all or nothing.

I have cancelled but I'm now panicing that we won't have a clue and we'll be completly useless when baby arrives!

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Flumpy

Sassafrass · 28/07/2008 12:50

Flumpytigger, we never went to classes with our first baby. Well, we went once, it got cancelled and when the next one was on I had already had dd! I didn't find it a problem but I did read a lot about giving birth, breastfeeding, taking care of a newborn and so on, so I felt quite confident.

Mustsleep, good luck! They won't think of you as a timewaster even if it turns out to be nothing. They'd rather you come in so if anything is up it can be checked. I've been in and out of our fetal health unit lots this pregnancy to see my consultant and various other reasons, and they always tell me to come in if there is any decrease of movement or any other worries. You'll feel much better I think once you've been.

potxola · 28/07/2008 12:58

flumpytigger Now you are with us, you can leave us Ok? Welcome!!!!!!!!

I am convinced you two won't be useless parents. Sorry for your loss, this time the baby will stay with you two and your instinct will take over, you will see.

I did go to 4 lessons with my first child, they did not tell me anything new. I had read "What to expect in the first year" and although I had never hugged a newborn in my life, I became a mother straight away, WEIRD!!!!!.
Maybe because I knew I was not going to have help from anyone other than my husband for a week. Anyway, just RELAX and enjoy the feeling of nervousness that comes with it all.
AND STAY WITH US PLEASE.

hopefully · 28/07/2008 12:59

Flumpy, sorry for your loss. I'm not going to ante natal classes because they kept falling on press days (journalist) or on weekend when i already had plans. however, I've read loads about all my options for birth plan/breastfeeding etc on mumsnet and elsewhere, and feel happy that where I don't have the information already, it's very easily accessable, usually by posting somewhere on here! I'm planning on taking a list of BF helpline numbers in my hospital bag, in case midwives are crap, and i figure it will take me 1 upside down nappy before I'm an expert on that front!

potxola · 28/07/2008 13:01

Hopefully great advice.

becaroo · 28/07/2008 13:02

Welcome flumpy.

Have got a scan and antenatal appointment this afternoon so will mention the back/chest pain then. No better, unfortunately.

Didnt sleep AT ALL last night - soooo hot!

Mustsleep - better to be safe than sorry - hope you are ok.
