Thanks Mel!!! Couldn't resist that 40% off. I bought the first couple of things for ourselves and Christmas presents for family members and friends with small babies

Periwink · 29/07/2008 09:05

Mel2005 - what would we do without you, have purchased a few things as gifts for some of my friends babies and a few things for me! Thanks!!!!!

Another scorrcher today ladies - keep cool.

poorbuthappy · 29/07/2008 09:05

Just looked at Blooming marvellous and need to wait until Thursday when I get paid!

Just checked Marks and Spencer for maternity stuff also cos I'm going on holiday in less than 3 weeks and definitely need some vest tops, shorts and swimming cossies. So sorry if this offends anyone, but their maternity stuff is vile...or is it just my pregnancy brain??

Where's the best place to buy good value stuff which will go straight into the wardrobe never to be seen again?

Morning all,

Ohh, those pelvic floor excercises! I just remember my midwife kept reminding me to do them after dd was born.

I was wondering where to buy decent but affordable maternity clothes too? I had to wear my trousers with the top button undone yesterday and they were held up by the tie belt Maternity stuff is a big too big though so i am at the in between stage.

I have my 20 week scan on the 14th August which is only two weeks and two days away!

elkiedee · 29/07/2008 10:21

I was so unimpressed by M&S maternity bras last time that I never looked at their clothes. I got undies from Mothercare as I really needed maternity bras long before anything else but it took time finding matching sets. Otherwise I used clothes from Dorothy Perkins, both maternity and non-m, and more expensively, Blooming Marvellous - but though I didn't use the skirt and matching top thing much considering what I paid, I'm still wearing the nighties now - soft, loose cotton.

fymandbean · 29/07/2008 10:43

Next is good for maternity, I also get stuff from Blooming Marvellous, Jojomamanbebe and Isabella Oliver (v.expensive).

Found M&S hideous, Formes are just for tall skinny women, mothercare (awful) and mamas and papas (didn't fit my body shape - pear).

Elkee that's great news!

blot4 · 29/07/2008 10:46

Thanks for all the words of encouragement everyone re baby moving. As it happens, I was thumped quite hard when lying on my tummy last night. Very reassuring . Hope to hear a heartbeat today at my mw appt.

For those with a bigger bust, I find the NCT maternity/nursing bras great because they're very plain. There's an awful tendency for frills for women with big boobs - why????

Also, why do so few shops stock their maternity lines? It would be nice to be able to go shopping and make yourself feel less blob-like by buying some nice flattering maternity kit. Instead we largely get lumbered with internet shopping. Are we not capable of walking round shops?? Furthermore, (this is turning into a rant) in Leeds, which is big enough for shops to stock maternity stuff, you have to work out which of the branches has got it in and end up walking round in circles - I'm not psychic!!!

I think the stress is beginning to show - moving house a week today and haven't done anything useful to get ready for it (keep falling asleep or having to play with DS), car needs servicing, going on holiday in a fortnight, then start a new job. Not very clever!

Feel better for that though.

Periwink · 29/07/2008 11:06

blot4 - you sure have a lot on your plate ... and then starting a new job to top it off, not sure how you do it?

Elkie - yes good news!

Periwink · 29/07/2008 11:09

I bought two fabulous vest ruched tops ( one in black and one in white) from Seraphine - they fit wonderfully and are great quality, highly recommend them!

elkiedee · 29/07/2008 11:10

blot4, I know what you're saying. I live in London and work in the centre, but I really don't like Oxford Street much and was very unimpressed first time round by shopping options.

Whereabouts in Leeds are you?

I came up to stay with my mum in Ilkley but also to visit Harrogate for a couple of days recently, and discovered their H&M has a big selection of their maternity clothes, and they have a branch of Jojo Maman Bebe - if I get up before Christmas I may talk to my mum about going shopping there again, or after Christmas for a few post-baby luxuries.

blot4 · 29/07/2008 11:20

elkie, I'm not actually in Leeds. Takes me an hour to get anywhere worth shopping in. My favourite is actually York, but not for maternity stuff. The specialist maternity places are so thinly spread that you find yourself hopping between towns to find them. About to move to Surrey/Berkshire border - lots of posher maternity shops around there but still scattered all over (and too expensive).

Hadn't tried Harrogate for maternity stuff - bit late now with moving next Tues. Generally it's a lovely place for shopping too - definitely worth getting some nice post baby stuff there - and stuffing your face with cakes from Betty's!

Periwink, I need some vest tops for my summer hols, will have a look at Seraphine - thanks.

elkiedee · 29/07/2008 11:25

I've only once queued for Betty's in Harrogate, easier to go to the Ilkley branch.

Surrey/Berkshire is a bit of a move, good luck with packing.

tinkisagracefulshamu · 29/07/2008 11:52

i ike mothercare for maternity bits have got 2 pairs of nice summer trousers and nice skirts. wearing normal tops mostly

Chocsolot · 29/07/2008 12:40

My word Blot4 that sounds manic.... there i was wondering how to muster up the energy for the ironing! Good luck

My brother is having a cotbed for his little one but my mum said that she found we fell out of them once the sides were taken away because cot mattresses tend to be harder than bed mattresses.... mind you that was a good few decades ago. I guess it is whatever works for you, some people swear by them some dislike them, not sure there is a right or wrong answer.

DH wants to go and look round mothercare at the weekend (not to buy anythign too early!) just because he is getting excited i think and he is a bit anal and will want to know the cost of everything i guess!

MrsMagpie · 29/07/2008 13:43

Right ladies brace yourselves for a rant.

My 20wk scan was booked for the 23rd August. It had completely slipped my mind that we have a wedding in liverpool on that day so I called up this morning to change my appt. The earliest they could fit me in was the 15th September. I'll be 25wks!!! They don't even do an emergency waiting list.

I phoned my midwife unit and they are looking into my options but at first the only thing they could think of was paying to go private. £250 Gulp! I've asked if I can go to another hospital but they don't think it's possible.

I hate that hospital with a passion now (didn't like it in the first place) and i'm so angry that i don't have a choice.

hopenotsickthistime · 29/07/2008 14:04

MrsMagpie - that is ridiculous. I can't believe that your hospital can't offer you a sensible alternative. I feel cross for you.

Mel - thanks again for shopping tip. There's some really great bargains which might well cheer us all up.

elkiedee · 29/07/2008 15:51

MrsMagpie, that's quite shocking. Is your lack of choice about distances?

poorbuthappy · 29/07/2008 16:05

Our local next and asda used to do maternity stuff but for some reason have now stopped, the amount of driving I have to do now to even look at decent maternity clothes is ridiculous!

Mothercare stuff locally seems really old fashioned and just simply not what I would wear. Also I find dottie Ps possibly the worst trousers on the face of the planet...they just make my bum look bigger than it is, if possible

Why do they think that pregnant woman will just buy without trying on? That really annoys me...

Oh well, will order off Blooming marvellous sale on Thursday when paid ready for hols and hope that I don't have to buy anything else...or leave the house after the temperature drops back to autumn/winter ranges...

MrsMagpie - completely unacceptable situation. I had to suggest very very sarcastically sweetly at my last scan that they contact the other hospitals in the area to fit in my 20 week scan actually in my 20th week...I'm sure if you kick up enough of a fuss someone somewhere will manage to find something for you...good luck and keep us informed!

poorbuthappy · 29/07/2008 16:06

By the way - off for my 4th scan tomorrow - yet another go to try and find out what type of twins I am having!

Periwink · 29/07/2008 16:35

Mrsmagpie - that is not acceptable! I am in London and have had problems upon problems with my hospital regarding my antenatal care (or very much a lack of). They should fit you in as you have given them enough notice - why not go to the hospital in person. Good luck.

Poorbuthappy - good luck to you too for tomorrow.

blot4 · 29/07/2008 16:50

Feeling v cheerful now, just heard baby's heartbeat for the first time.

Mrsmagpie - poor you. I've been v fortunate so far that my local hospital is very flexible (and clearly not too busy) and is always happy to change an appointment. However, I'm getting worried i'm going to have issues with getting my 20wk scan as I'm moving house at 18wks and haven't met the midwife yet (who I'm told is chronically overstretched). Hope their not as inflexible as your hospital.

Chocsolot, my advice is get your dh to do the ironing (one thing my dh is v good at, mind you he's in the army!)

LooseyC · 29/07/2008 17:19

elkiedee - congrats, great news!

mel - thanks for the shopping tip - again! I have bought some weaning stuff for DS, bargin.

Good luck to those with scans - and those just trying to get them.

I'm trying not to be too worried as well iwould but I'm really bad. Especially at the moment as I've had some minor bleeding again. It's same as last time that my mw said not to worry about, but that's easier said than done. I'm so paranoid I can't wait until my next app - shame it's in 2 weeks...
