looweeza · 14/08/2008 19:57

thanks eachpeach, that gives me some hope!

LenniEd · 14/08/2008 20:33

I have put on about 9lbs too looweeza - last time I was the same, put on about a stone by 24 weeks and then only another 10lbs or so until 38 weeks. Then I blew up like the elephant woman with fluid - my ankles were the size of my knees, but don't want to think about that part, but those 2 weeks added a stone, but fluid and baby rather than fat. I was a stone heavier than pre-pg by the time DD was about 3wks old and it took me about 9 months to lose almost all of that. So all in all I really wouldn't worry, everyone is different. My boobs seem to go massive in the first few months too (up 3 cup sizes already) and I think that accounts for a fair proportion of the weight!

BTW - I should add, the fluid part was cos my waters were leaking, and my body went into overdrive replenishing them . After the birth I must have been for a wee about a thousand times in the first week to get rid of it all.

well, it is reassuring about my perceived lack of weight gain. i am glad however that my breasts have stop ballooning. they grew so fast so soon that i thought they were going to get to an unmanageable size.

i've just made a huge art sale and with the exchange rate will be sitting pretty... we will be getting all big baby items next week. very excited.

tinkispregnantwithpickle · 15/08/2008 09:11

Upwind · 15/08/2008 09:27

The weight gain thing goes back to the problem of using "averages" as some kind of desirable goal. My very petite friend was told in pregnancy (by a consultant) that her baby was too small for dates and she was very stressed about it. Her midwife reassured her by pointing out that since she was 5'0 and her DP was also smaller than average, chances were her baby would be small too, and for someone so petite a big baby would be more of a worry. In the end her baby was average sized

moosemama · 15/08/2008 10:47

Have gained 8lbs so far and was abit tbh. Didn't weigh myself in previous pregnancies but got absolutely huge by the end of both, mainly due to bad spd so poor mobility.

I lost over a stone in the first trimester and only put 2lbs back on by 14 wks so have piled it on over the past 6 weeks! I think its due in part to not walking to the school 3 times a day. Am intending to go walking loads when boys are back as won't have the 11.30 pick up to rush back for. (At least the dogs will be happy!)

Had a god awful morning with the boys yesterday, resulting in being rescued by Mum again! But on the upside we came up with a child rotation scheme where one does crafts at the kitchen table and one plays in the bedroom, then they swap. Worked like a charm, and peace returned and has stayed in the Moose household. I think they are mightily fed up with each other's company and the break did them the world of good. They have been sat to the kitchen table doing sticker books and colouring together all morning with no problems at all. (Its sooo quiet, its almost spooky!) First sign of trouble they will be in separate rooms again, but we are off to Grandmas this afternoon (they are always good there) and I (despite the weight gain thing) will get to eat cake - which always helps.

We have decided we are still going to go on our holiday even though we can't afford it. Feel like it would be good opportunity to draw a line under this week and move on. Some family fun time is most definitely in order methinks!

That said we are supposed to be camping in Pembrokeshire from Sunday! Weather report seems to change a hundred times a day, but at the moment looks ok (on and off). We will be in a hotel on Thursday night though so at least if it does rain there's light at the end of the tunnel!

moosemama · 15/08/2008 11:01

BTW DS1 was 'small for dates' and I had twice weekly monitoring, scans and doppler scans for the last month and a half. They also tried to get me to agree to a cs at 37 weeks and the delightful registrar standing in for my consultant told me that I was a selfish stupid woman who was risking my baby's life when I said no and stood my ground. (There were no signs of a problem, all monitoring good, dopplers of placental flow perfect and it was only his abdo measurement that was small - the sonographer kept saying she didn't think it was in a worrying range and didn't know why they were messing me about!)
When the consultant came back she agreed with me and was even happy not to induce when I was late!

I eventually gave birth to a perfect 6lb 5oz baby boy at 40+6 after a sweep. (Unfortuately the same registrar was on call when I was in labour and was still trying to push me to have a cs - luckily I had a fantastic mw who soon set him straight and ejected him from the room.)

He is still the smallest boy in his year and has a tiny little bottom (still in age 4 pants at 6 years old!) and no tummy at all (unlike his Mum and brother!) He is skinny in a wiry, muscular sort of way just like his Dad, who also has always had no bum and a tiny tum!

They failed to factor in small people on both sides of the family. My Nanny was only 4'10" and DH's Mum is 4'11". I think they assumed because we are both reasonable heights, 5'7" and 5'9" he should take after us!

tinkispregnantwithpickle · 15/08/2008 11:02

hi mm glad that peace is in your house and you seem less stressed. i cant imagine how hard it must be entertaining more than one child for 6 wks especially when the weather is bad. sounds like you are doing a great job
holiday sounds like a great idea to get away from the house

moosemama · 15/08/2008 11:03

Just looked at the size of my posts!

Ah well, think of them as making up for me not being around for a week!

elkiedee · 15/08/2008 11:13

Doesn't make sense to me wanting to get a "small for dates" baby out at 37 weeks, unless they can definitely tell that there's a reason behind it (doesn't sound like case there).

rrrayray · 15/08/2008 11:14

Hello ladies.

had m.wife appt yesterday, Everything peachy and heard a lovely strong heart beat

Was also v. pleased as was shown round the beautiful maternity unit. midwife led, pretty small, but almost brand spanking new, lovely and Clean and birthing pools in every room! Couldn't have asked for more.

Midwife also lovely, despite having woman beard (teehee).

Although in reflection took b.pressure, felt tummy etc, but didn't weigh me? Hmm! nevermind.

Feeling much happier at Harwich than Colchester.... just got "that" feeling.... i think i'll be a happy bunny there. Lets just hope no complications to stop me giving birth there!!!

moosemama · 15/08/2008 11:28

elkiedee that's exactly what the consultant said and I thought! I think that registrar was certifiable! He was so rude and accusatory and with it being pfb he really frightened us. It took everything I had to stand up to him and was so relieved when the consultant backed me up.

When he was shouting at me and telling me I was a stupid woman etc DH just looked at him and said we don't have to listen to this and guided me outside. He did all this on the day ward in front of other patients as well! There was actually a mw stood behind him shaking her head and indicating to me not to listen to him, then afterwards she came out into the corridor and whispered 'well done you'.

I still regret not putting in a formal complaint about him. Although I did complain to the consultant, obviously. I think I just wanted to forget the whole nasty incident and enjoy my pfb. Still feel guilty that he probably went on to bully other women though.

Chocsolot · 15/08/2008 11:32

Morning all,

Haven't been around for a while because i have been camping in cornwall.... what a ridiculous idea that was, pouring with rain and have got to the point where i am beginning to need to do a toilet run a couple of times a night! It wasn't fun.

Great news for those few who have started having scans, i can't believe we are all approaching half way though, how exciting is that!? We have a cardiac scan on monday to check the babies heart, fingers crossed for that, am a little worried, every generation on my dads side has had congenital heart disorders and so far my sisters children have been beautifully healthy and we have been very lucky, hoping our luck holds out!

Went to a backs and babies class at the hospital yesterday too... learnt loads about how the anatomy changes and how to help look after your back and pelvis, it was quite useful . The ridiculously thin very young physio stood there and told us all we should start re-doing our pelvic floor exercises 24 hours after giving birth though... all of us looked at her completely shocked, I really don't expect to be able to feel anything but pain down there that early on, and can't see my pelvic floors will be my priority on day 1 of motherhood really.

With the weight gain thing i am huge... some days my bump wobbles so i just think it is mainly fat and some days its rock solid which is bizarre, am hoping its alot of water retention. My friend is due the same weekend as me and can still get into her normal clothes and her midwife isn't concerned. So i guess how everyones body adapts is different.

moosemama · 15/08/2008 11:35

rrrayray sounds lovely. Wish our unit was half as nice - they've been winding it down with one eye on closing it for years now - but then that's half the reason I want a home birth this time.

Despite the registrar thing DS1 was born in a brand spanking new womens unit with space age motorised bed etc - was like something out of Star Trek. Would have been even better if the mw's had known how to operate it, had several comedy moments as they fiddled with the controls while my head, feet, bottom etc were moved up and down! Luckily the mw who was there for the birth had just been on a training course, otherwise I could've ended up giving birth standing on my head or something!

My mw says they don't weigh anymore as weight gain is such an individual thing in pregnancy. They did ask me my weight on booking in to assess risk but thats as far as it goes.

Chocsolot · 15/08/2008 11:37

moosemama he sounds awful, you were obvioulsy so in the right, esp as all his staff were even agreeing with you, hope you have a better experience this time, are you going to the same hospital?

fymandbean · 15/08/2008 12:35

I love the weight debate !

I must have put on nearly 3/4 stone but I'm not worried as I did virtually the same last time...everyone is different. I would just say to those who aren't putting on weight or who are underweight do be aware the baby is like a parasite and will take nutrients from you - so definitely have full cream milk, cheese, red meat and green vegetables in larger quantities than normal cos otherwise you'll end up anaemic.... it's not the amount of weight that matters it's down to having more nutriants, vitamins and minerals to compensate for what th baby is taking.

Chocsolot · 15/08/2008 13:08

fymandbean yeah i heard that too... have personally seen it as a great excuse to eat loads of ice cream too.... maybe thats why i am so big!

Chocsolot · 15/08/2008 14:16

how funny..... people are so insensitive, you have to laugh otherwise you would cry or hit them! Do they not appreciate what emotional delicate souls us pregnant women can be!

People keep asking me if i am having twins, i turned around to someone last week and "Oh no, definately not, I think i am just fat!" it was really funny because then she got all overly nice and telling me i only had weight on my bump though and how healthy i look (suck ups!), might make them think first next tiem though!

Periwink · 15/08/2008 14:51

I have put on 4kg not sure what that is in pounds - but seems like a lot to me, howver not too bothered, going to take the dog for a walk and get an icecream for me!

HeathersMummy · 15/08/2008 15:09

Hi,
I've not put on any weight at all yet, but then I am way larger than the rest of you by the sounds of it . With DD I only put on 10 pounds and she weighed 8lb13oz, so I'm not too worried about it.
Had midwife appointment yesterday and all well. Now 20 weeks and heard heartbeat, all bloods etc good. Very though, my health authority doesn't do 20 week scans. That said, I've got an appointment at 28 weeks as my consultant wants to scan me - I've got a huge fibroid that they want to keep an eye on.
Can't believe that this babe is half-way "cooked" already...but when will the sickness end!
Glad everyone is doing well, have a good weekend all

moosemama · 15/08/2008 18:40

Chocsolot no won't be the same, am hoping for homebirth and mw seems very keen.

Had DS2 at a different one as well, as we moved home from the North West the summer before he was born. (Local maternity ward is a real dump here though.)

HeathersMummy we didn't get 20 week scans last time but had a huge local lobby via papers etc and they do them now. We went for a private anomaly scan and paid for a 4d scan at the same time as it was only 50 pounds extra. It was lovely to see his face and he did look just like his scan picture, but we didn't get very many good shots and the video is difficult to make sense of (mainly because he was subbornly uncooperative).

tinkispregnantwithpickle · 16/08/2008 13:06
