ChocOrange05 · 24/07/2008 10:19

Thanks Obs thats really useful. I have been giving urine samples and there is no sugar detected in there as yet but I guess they are just doing the test as a precaution.

ceebee74 · 24/07/2008 10:40

Chocorange - I am supposed to have a glucose intolerance test aswell at 29 weeks becaue my mum has diabetes so I am 'at risk' too. However, I am seriously considering refusing it (I am not sure if I can do this but I assume I can refuse any treatment??) I know this seems a bit foolish but I KNOW that I cannot go without eating for such a long period of time - I start to feel dizzy, faint, sweaty and ready to pass out if I don't eat regularly and there is no way I am putting myself in that position at 29 weeks pg!! Because I do get all these symptoms, I have had blood tests for diabetes previously and they have always been negative.

Sorry to go on but I am really worried that they will force me to do it and then I will have to sit in the waiting room, shaking, and passing out.

Lacks - sorry you are feeling poorly - it is the absolute last thing you need today

suiledonn · 24/07/2008 10:46

Ceebee74, I know how you feel about the fasting. I am terrified they will tell me to do the glucose test too. The only way I can keep the awful sickness I had at the start of my pregnancy under control is to eat every 2-3 hours. Otherwise I start throwing up again. I can't imagine what I would be like after a 12 hour fast - and the trip to the hospital is 45 minutes in the car and I'm not a great traveller at the best of times.

My sister attended a different maternity hospital than I do and they are really strict about the diabetes testing. They bade it on weight and even though my sister is well within the normal weight for her height her babies were all big so she put on a lot of weight in pregnancy and that is why she had to do the test. I am a couple of stone overweight even before being pregnant yet my hospital is not concerned about it at all.

Oblomov · 24/07/2008 10:46

Ceebee, are you sure that you couldn't cope with a fasting. I mean you have a late dinner. Then go to bed. It is only breakfat you miss. Obviously you are given an appointment, first thing in the morning.
As soon as it is all over, Then you have a huge slap up breakfast at the nearest greasy spoon.
Or thats the Oblomov way of doing it. Not TOO bad.
Just about bearable, non ?

suiledonn · 24/07/2008 10:47

Sorry that shold be 'base' not 'bade'.

Oblomov · 24/07/2008 10:52

AND I have been told, many times, that they say no food for 12 hours. But its not that strict. i.e food post 1/2am is a big no, no. It is the non food comsumption say between 1am and 7am that makes the real difference. People have been known to have dinner at 8/9pm, or even a naughty snack at 10pm. And it is still o.k.

misdee · 24/07/2008 11:00

i am booked in for a GTT in august again. have to fast from 9pm the night before (no late night toast for me then lol), then have to be at the hospital for 8.30am.

tbh last time i almost fainted after the second blood test, but that was because i wasnt bleeding well, so she was digging around with a needle. this time its being done in path lab, not by the midwife so they should be better at getting blood out of a stone me.

will stop by the canteen for a bacon sarnie or sainsburys for a brekkie afterwards.

Oblomov - I see what you are saying but for me, breakfast is the main meal of the day - I am always starving when I wake up and need a huge bowl of cereal before I can do anything! I honestly don't think I could cope with it tbh.

When I went in for my booking-in appointment, the MW told me there were various factors that would mean you needed a test - a BMI over 30, family history of diabetes or a previous baby who weighed over 9lb were just some of them that she mentioned to me.

Oblomov · 24/07/2008 12:26

I understand Ceebee.
Well, best you all come over to my house for an Oblomov medical
I'll do regular blood tests and then you won't need to worry about your Hb1Ac !!
Form an orderly queue please ladies.

LackaDAISYcal · 24/07/2008 12:34

suiledon, you must stay here! By all means go and chat to the October lot as well, but we'd miss you. And anyway technically you are still due in November, whether your baby comes earlier or not

I had a fasting blood test after DD was born, but I didn't have to drink anything. I went in first thing, they took some blood and that was that. what would that have been for? I thought it was something to do with blood sugars but maybe not!

Feeling atrocious still. The cavalry (DH) is on it's way though and should be here to relieve me soon. A friend came over this morning and playd with the kids while i got some laundry sorted out

I am also being tested for GTT due to PCOS and the fact I delivered a baby over 10lbs Was fine in previous pregnancies so assume all will be well in this one....

Ceebee - I am also like you and HAVE to have breakfast, but as Obs says, they get you in for 0830 and you can even have a lie down if need be!!! I did and read my book so no real hardship!!!!

How is everyone today - I had a v.v.v. strange dream last night, that I was in the big bother house and hadn't seem my family for weeks and weeks....I came out onto the stage at the Royal Albert Hall and that is when I saw the baby for the first time!!!!!!!

Someone psychoanalis that if you will!!! I don't even watch BB!

I had a GTT last time as I had a couple of samples showing traces of sugar, but they were only the ones when I'd forgotten to do a first morning sample. It was fine.
As MN meetups, they are fun. You are always nervous before but as long as you don't wear crocs or give your kids fruit shoots everyone is nice!
DS survived nursery again this morning, then they rang and said the other child who went home ill the other day has slapped cheek and now I'm waiting to get through to the dr again to see if they can check me and DS out, I know they don't like you to have it when pg, but is it worse earlier on? and is it a virus - so the rash she called viral on Monday could be it? And what does it do
Loving the idea of meeting your baby on stage at the royal albert hall!

Oblomov · 24/07/2008 12:57

Dozy was my first ever Blind Date.
Never had one before. Let alone with a WOMAN.

Thanks Lackadaisy - I don't think there is any chance you lot can get rid of me now anyway.

How are all the first timers feeling. I was on the phone to my friend for ages this morning. Her first maybe is due in the next few days and she is a bundle of nerves - but not about the big things like the birth. She is so confused by all the choice available. She can't decide what type of bottles to use or should she go for the known brand of baby blankets or if the cheaper ones are ok. She is doubting every decision she has made so far and it is driving her mad.

suiledonn · 24/07/2008 13:18

What is wrong with my typing today. That should read 'first baby' of course. Not 'first maybe'

bubbaz · 24/07/2008 14:40

Just got back from MW and all is fine HB was lovely and strong and I am not measuring big - I think my nieces MW is an idiot - she also thinks she can't eat raspberrys or drink full fat milk wtf?
I hope all of the blood tests are OK I don't envy anyone who has to have more blood taken i've just got my app for my anti D which I am NOT looking forward too - it hurts

ChocOrange05 · 24/07/2008 14:44

Oh - just wondering, has anyones belly button popped yet?!?! Mine hasn't. Does this always happen and if so when?

Just curious!

sparkletoes · 24/07/2008 14:44

Oblamov and Suliedonn PLSE DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT LEAVING US FOR ANOTHER THREAD!!!

I am shattered today, blooming hayfever woke me up and now I can't even go for a wee lie down due to Bob the flaming builders next door... Luckily DS is able to nap thru it!

Ceebs, I looked into that new law and it seems it would apply to Scotland too. Am going to ask work what the situation will be regarding my childcare vouchers and see what they say... If they say it will be deducted from my maternity pay (only get percentage of salary for 6 weeks!) then I will hit them with my new knowledge!!

Sorry ChocO no knowledge of pregnancy diabetes hope u r ok tho.

DocWife I had exactly the same feelings as you when waiting for DS to come along! You can't imagine it but be assured it is the most wonderful thing in the world having a newborn. But so true what they say about them growing up fast so enjoy every minute (sure you will tho)

Sorry for long post and just cos haven't mentioned everyone doesn't mean have forgotten you! Right putting kettle on am parched...

cricri · 24/07/2008 14:46

Daisy Hope you feel better soon Not good to be ill just before you go on holiday especially with all the preparations etc. Try and get some rest when DH comes in.
Suiledonn I'm a first-timer and I know what your friend means, the choice out there is just overwhelming! I found the various lists of essentials we had on this thread a while back v useful and also I've been given a lot of stuff so it's not as though I've gone out and bought it. If I don't use it then it won't matter. I'm also getting a pram/buggy from my friend so again, if I find it's not suitable after a few months then I can buy another one. My main purchases are going to be a cot bed (which I won't rush to buy anyway as the baby will be in our room to start with), an Amby nest and a car seat (which DH is supposed to be researching Then all the other bits and bobs but I'll start getting those when I get back to the UK. I suppose it's a bit like Christmas - if you buy an item or so a week then it's not quite as overwhelming
I tell you what did freak me out a little though - one of the ladies on the Knickercheckers anonymous thread posted a list of stuff her MW had delivered for a home birth - OMG! I guess I'm just starting to think about that aspect of things now...

ChocOrange05 · 24/07/2008 14:46

Bubbaz glad your MW appt went well! What is anti D?!?!

cricri · 24/07/2008 14:54

Bubbaz Glad MW appt went well and that you're measuring fine

Oblomov · 24/07/2008 15:01

Bubbaz, glad all is fine.
I have Anti D end Aug aswell. Becasue my blood groupr is Rhesus Negative, right ? Does it hurt ? I don't rmember it hurting. Presumably I had it with ds- don't suppose my blood group has changed all of a sudden !!

Cricri, how is the weather in lovely France. Are you basking in sun ?

ChocOrange, no more asking about tummy buttons popping. Remember it makes me feel ill. Wierd. Don't know why that is.

Daisy, hope you are feeling better.
