This is it!! Some of us have already started the descent into new BABYDOM. Best to arm ourselves with the facts. Here you will find the Signs of Labor. Just don't panic. Remember women around the world have been giving birth for ages. You are not alone nor will you be alone throughout this entire process. We are all here for each other no matter what. So let us go forward with heads high and bellies low.

Back to more unsolicited advice about hospital hairdressers. I think that it is worth bearing in mind that as the majority of people who are in hospitals long enough to need a hairdresser are little old ladies then this could be the style in which they have most expertise.

Am clearly highly knowledgable and opinionated about hairdressers which is funny really as I tend to get it cut on average once a year although this went down when I was living in London as I thought "I'm not paying that much ..."

Did I say before that babies here tend to get their heads shaved at birth? It is meant to help the hair grow more thickly. And it could be true. Most Argentinians that I know have nice thick hair. Baby LWFH on the other hand will probably have weedy thin European hair, but NO head shaving!!! Private hospitals will also pierce the ears of girl babies at birth as well.

Ramble over, really must work. Positive thoughts to all. VG didn't mean to sound all self righteous, sometimes I blither without thinking. Many apologies.

TwilightSurfer · 08/07/2008 14:46

VG my busy bump is most active when I'm sitting slightly reclined back. MY ATTEMPTS TO REST makes her desire to wiggle all the more. Sunshine on the belly seems to get her going too. OH and then there's the "MOVE OVER" nudge I give her from time to time which pisses her off but gets her moving. Lately though the more I sleep the more she sleeps with me...we've developed a nice sleep pattern which I hope hangs around after she arrives.

PetitFilou1 · 08/07/2008 14:46

VG I knew it I knew it (jumps up and down excitedly - in old pregnant lady kind of way) the Tobi was the one I eventually fixed on. Also thought, not too embarrassing for dh to wear.

Have drafted my parly question answer by the way (how fast I am?!)

Re engaging, VG you might know about it as I find the bump suddenly hangs differently (it changed overnight for me both times) But normally they do say you don't engage until labour with second or more pregnancies.

I was worried that dd had stopped moving and went in to be monitored. As soon as they put the monitor on, there she was bopping away - predictably. There is no harm you going in and being checked.

VintageGardenia · 08/07/2008 14:54

lwfh I didn't think there was anything blithery or blathery about your post! at the ear piercing. Over my dead body! The hair shaving - oddly enough I can see the rationale for this, but the thought of any kind of BLADE going near the baby's head!!! Will you have to actively prevent this? Might I add - my obsession with getting hair done before baby comes might give false impression re. my glamour levels. Can I assure you, they are LOW!

pf yay for top taste! I thought the wavy liney ones would look too hippy when wrapped, and the broad stripes were nice but maybe too deckchair. The Tobi is a smart design and as you say good for your DH too. Re. bump I don't think the shape has changed.

I'll just feel a bit self-conscious and time-wastery if I go in and there's the baby dancing like a mad thing and me protesting O but I cannot feel a thing - even if it's true!

PetitFilou1 · 08/07/2008 14:54

poppysocks I love Madeleine - no offence meant!

TS Adeline? Gwendoline? Catherine? and a wildcard Heather because I think it kind of goes?

poppysocks · 08/07/2008 15:11

No worries pf!

dizzydixies · 08/07/2008 15:14

afternoon all

sazz have you phoned the hospital?

VG have you tried caffine, I know we're not allowed it on a regular basis but a wee kick start might help? are you at work or could you pop into the bath? lying on your left side (not just good for wind you know )

TS Reese was a contender for dd2 as mil is teresa and neither of us like it so we shortened it to Reese/Rae or Tess. She got Rae as a mn as it was the best sounding with her first name but I think Reese is lovely too - will have a think for a MN for you

ok quick update on me had diabetic clinic this morning - blood sugars described as 'excellent' lol - felt like I should have got a wee smiley face in my book I had the midwife/dietician/nurse/consultant AND professor in with me - nothing like making sure you've got enough attention!!

have had a discussion re birth and ATM, decision is that is I go into spontaneous labour then I'll be allowed to give it a shot (baby also now head down today!) but will have an elective C/S rather than go overdue - he's apparently worried re the severe shoulder dystocia I had with dd1 and the fact dd2 didn't come down - fair enough, am happy with this

I have another scan and apt next week so it could all change then but am feeling a bit less stressed as I thought I was going to have to make a decision!!

still haven't picked a name/sling or decided on a changing station or not - one thing at a time for me I think

latest on mammydixie is that she is being moved to the hospice tomorrow so I'll try to get down either tomorrow or Thurs for a visit

pregnancy1 · 08/07/2008 15:22

VG - no, I'm sure not . Basically about 2 weeks ago I had the same thing, both times about an eggcup full, didn't smell and was clear.... At first I thought that I wasn't doing enough pelvic floors, but it didn't smell... It might be happening more often - can't tell as I wear a liner... oh gawd - TMI, sorry. Bean's heartbeat is fine and she's still wiggling/kicking/punching and she's not coming before 38 weeks (I've decided)

I love Madeline too, in fact I love all the classic names. My only concern is that our two favourites have been in the top ten names for the last 5 years, so surely they'll have about 10 other Emily/Sophies in their class at school? (Eleanor is no 3)

You've prob already all seen these, but here are the lists of the top 100 baby names for the last few years:
www.statistics.gov.uk/specials/babiesnames_boys.asp
www.statistics.gov.uk/spe cials/babiesnames_girls.asp

VintageGardenia · 08/07/2008 15:25

dizzy that's great news on the blood sugar level! Are you finding it ok or challenging managing that? Will your mum be aware of being moved into the hospice?

Will pop kettle on.

In fact will make cuppas all round.

pregnancy1 · 08/07/2008 15:25

Oh well done dizzy - I can't believe they didn't even give you a star sticker or a smiley apple though. Did you ask?
VG - bean always goes nuts when I lie down on my left side - have you tried that? Also, water does nothing for me - try squash.

Dizzy {{{{BIG.AUNTIE.UNA.TYPE.HUG}}}} excellent health and birthing news!!! So glad for you. My mother had hospice care for a month and I don't know what I would have done without it. They gave us both the support we needed at the time. {{{hug}}}

Also, nice to know Reese scores high on your list of names. You are the QUEEN of Names. I look forward to your mn suggestion.

Erm pregnancy1 have you not noticed there is no such thing as TMI in this group? The more I the better. I'll be covered in embarrassment if I ever meet any of you in RL. Presumably if you know heartbeat fine etc you have seen mw or doc since last leak.

Delivery from postman - two nice boxes of stuff from Liz Earle (I don't know why I don't just get my salary paid directly to her), they are thank-you pressies for my friend and my mother who are going to be on standby to provide DS with food, shelter and loving guardianship during my 3 days in hospital. My "nursery" may be a disordered kip without a bed but at least I have my thank-you's lined up!

ChaCha · 08/07/2008 15:40

Hi everyone,

DD - I don't know how you do it, i am shattered with just the day to days and my DC. Glad to hear clinic went well.

VG - Surely that amount of sleep is illegal Gimme some!! I think 2 hours was my maximum again yesterday - I am shattered and had to leave shopping centre as i could not focus on what i needed to buy. Fortunately mum has taken DC to park en route home so i am hoping to sleep - SPD/baby wriggler/piles permitting.

PF - Love the slings. STill can't make a decision on what i should get but then i couldn't make a decision over facial wipes FGS in shop today ... lack of sleep obviously hindering thought process.

Great news Sazzles, mind be more at rest now.

x

VintageGardenia · 08/07/2008 15:41

Rich tea? What on earth would I be doing with such a dreary biscuit? How could I be expected to gain any excess weight?

I can offer Walker's petticoat tails, straw-shaped After Eights, or Ballistos. Or the remains of dark choc.

Ooooh I made lovely chocolate mousse last night all organic - eggs, choc, cream. God it was divine.

All gone though .

I have some chili on the stove if anyone wants a bowl. DD and I just had an early lunch. I've been cleaning up around the house in between posts and needed some hard core refueling.

sazzles can you go for a swim please...it'll make up for my incredibly lazy afternoon! i've spent 2 hours looking at slings, wraps and pouches! AND still haven't decided what i'm going for!

AnnVan · 08/07/2008 15:51

Wow this thread moves fast, have spent half an hour catching up. I slept in rather late today I think I am turning into a creature of ze night [bares fangs].
Buckets - love the suggestion of a tent in the garden. I think i will have to buy one. Problem is I'm just too soft. I think I'll have to tell them not to come within first week though.
Love the sling thread. Reminds me of SA - you'd see the Zulu ladies working with their babies strapped to their backs. In traditional Zulu culture, women do ALL the work & still look after babies, cook etc.

AnnVan · 08/07/2008 15:54

Oh - VG and Sazzles, sending good vibes your way,try not to get too stressed!
Wandering i I should have another piece of pear and almond tart?

VintageGardenia · 08/07/2008 15:56

AnnVanPire in traditional Irish culture we maintain this tradition

Petticoat tails are buttery shortbread and Balisto ... will have to find link.

AnnVan · 08/07/2008 16:00

VG - lol.
Hmm, wandering about that cuppa, or have I missed that boat?
