twinkle1 · 28/06/2008 19:15

afternoon all,
Hope you are all well.Thought i would let you all know how the boys are getting on
Connor is off the ventilator and on cpap, but still unwell. His kidneys are immature and leaking sodium so its a constant battle to replace it. Callum is doing great he gets EBM through his ng tube and thats about it, he just needs to get bigger so he can maintain his temp and learn how to feed.He now weighs 3.08oz.
I hope everyone is not too uncomfortable and managing to keep there spirits up
Twinkle

isaidno · 28/06/2008 19:36

Lovely to hear from you twinkle. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before you are home with your 2 gorgeous little boys

isaidno · 28/06/2008 19:40

disney - at my 36 week scan they estimated Poppy's weight at 7lb. 2 weeks later she was born 6lb 4oz, so take the estimations with a pinch of salt.

Sounds like there are loads of you with niggles all desperate for babies! Hope someone pops soon!! Poppy is 10 days old and being pregnant is already a distant memory for me!

twinkle1 · 28/06/2008 19:53

isaidno, agree about weight estimations. They said the boys were both around 3.5lb and they were 4.06oz & 3.12oz
twinkle

EEC · 28/06/2008 20:17

Good to hear from you twinkle and isaidno. Am sending all good wishes to Connor and Callum. Stay strong Twinkle. It sounds as though they are improving all the time.

Have just come back from the hospital - mw was great - monitored me/Lo for 40 mins, and all is fine. I did feel a bit silly going in, but she reassured me that I had done the right thing - I had felt pretty much no movements for 12 hours. Feel relieved now, and of course getting lots of lovely wriggles now I'm home.

sweetkitty · 28/06/2008 20:47

Rumpel - I have finally ordered the P&T I know how long have I been talking about it and deliberating. Apparently the baby is only in the lie flat bit for 4 months or so. I know best of a bad bunch really I hate doubles was looking at a few in Mothercare today. I use lavender oil quite a bit for the kitchen bin etc I love the smell of it, I want to plant some lavender in the garden as well.

mummypig - sorry things have stalled a bit for you, time to get on with the old wives tales

kaz - love the idea of doping the cat with Rescue Remedy. When we moved back to Scotland we had the 3 cats in their boxes and 9mo DD1 all in our Clio, what a journey that was, 9 hours.

twinkle - nice to hear from you, how are you holding up? How's your other DC? As the others have said won't be long until they are home and your chasing after them and all this will be a distant memory.

isaidno - cannot believe Poppy is 10 days old already, how is the BFing going now? Take each day at a time and remember first 3 weeks is the hardest get over that and it gets so much easier.

EEC - good news am glad LO is doing well, is he/she still the wrong way up?

Best be off DP has got Cloverfield on DVD, will see what I think of it may be back on here later or asleep.

Minkus · 28/06/2008 20:57

Hey everyone

Glad things are improving twinkle.

Think things might be kicking off here- tummy increasingly crampy, bh's running into each other and getting more and more uncomfortable - fingers crossed the 2 long ish walks I took today are working! (Plus the clary sage I've rubbed in twice since 5 o'clock {blush]) Will get the breast pump out in a mo.

With ds I went into labour late on 38+5 and guess what I am today...yep 38+5 so you never know!

libralady · 28/06/2008 21:24

Looking good Minkus.

Great News Twinkle.

SK glad you've finally taken the plunge.

I'll catch up with the rest of the thread in a bit, my brain space is a bit fuzzy at the mo. I'm hoping it'll come back.

Am still expressing my milk for Luke as he still will not latch on. Even the nipple shields are not aiding.

At the moment all I can manage is 2 oz after 5 minutes on each breast. My breasts are completely drained by this point even after squeezing them whilst on the pump. I am trying to express each hour during the evening/night until bed so I can get a reserve in for night time feeding and then I express again when Luke wakes me during the small hours so I have something for the morning.

I would be totally lost without the electric pump. I am so glad I purchased one before hand. I know it's not ideal, but at least Luke is getting my milk, which is more than DS1 did. I don't care what the breastfeeding counsellors say, the most important thing to us is he's getting my milk albeit via a bottle.

MW said I should be giving him 4oz feeds now but I'm only producing 3oz in a 2 hour period so am having to top up with formula.

He has lost some of his birth weight (120g) and MW not worried in the slightest. She did day he has red jaundice and again not too worried, just need to get him in the sunlight more to help reduce this. Has anyone else had any experience of red jaundice? Only thought it came in the yellow form.
Also Luke had the Guthrie's heel prick test today. It broke my heart as she had to prick him twice as the first time hardly any blood came out despite having his foot in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes beforehand.

Took Luke over to see my Nan earlier (she's 100 in 5 weeks) and she had a little cuddle. I got a bit upset as although I was there she spoke to my Mum about me as if I wasn't. 'Oh she's producing a family of boys then to continue the family name'. Then we had to explain yes, but it's DH's name not hers.
Bless her, she does have dementia and the number of times she asked how old he was and who's baby he was I lost count of. She also wanted to know where her family were as she thinks she's the only one left.

Also introduced Luke to the wonders of Cricket this afternoon. Got the captain to let us know when our side were batting so we could pop over and see the guys and they could admire Luke. The Captain is to be one of Luke's godfathers and he takes his responsibilites very seriously. Even thanked me for having Luke on his payday, so he should always have money when it comes to having to buy him a birthday present.

Sorry for the long post, but DH has gone out and there is nothing but crap on the TV.

I'll try and catch up of the rest of the thread now. Has anyone else had their babies yet?

libralady · 28/06/2008 21:25

EEC, it's wonderful when you get the reassurance isn't it. I had a similar thing when pregnant with DS1.

ButterflyMcQueen · 28/06/2008 22:03

just wrot a huge thread and lost it

ButterflyMcQueen · 28/06/2008 22:07

here is the précis

libra well done you but do not exhaust yourself!!

sweetkitty glad you finally bought it! we can moan together if it is a pain!

twinkle - hope you are bearing up
cant wait to see pics. did you know they were boys before birth btw?

everyone else keep smiling this is the home straight!!

CilC · 28/06/2008 22:19

The home straight, yes must remember that!

I was given a P&T for DD and while I never got the opportunity to use it for two - for one child it was absolutely fab to take shopping and use in parks etc. The space underneath was fantastic, you can do an entire shop, complete with wine and it all fits!! It did hills and mud well, folded easily once I got the hang of it (I am not good with these sort of things) and for a larger pram it collapses to a good size for the boot of the car.

Plus they look good!

Hope that helps SK and Butterfly!

Polyxene · 28/06/2008 22:25

Evening all!

Minkus - I'm rooting for you! If only because according to Disney you're next, so after that the rest of us can have a chance!

Well, I've had curry and pineapple this evening. Except that the curry was a mild masala, followed by only about 2 and a 1/2 'rings' worth of pineapple, so I don't actually expect it to do any good... And I've come home to bed now, but DH is still at the party having port and stilton, so no real chance of the other 'tried and tested' method tonight I guess.

purplejennyrose · 28/06/2008 22:29

best wishes to connor and callum - and of course you twinkle.
good luck minkus
well done libralady! keep going but make sure you get plenty of rest and TLC
Not very inspired tonight...feel a bit brain dead after few sleepless nights with dd who has sore throat and temp. Not brain dead in a bad way you understand...just a bit spaced!
Think I need chocolate...
PIL and two BIL over this pm for MIL birthday. I went to Waitrose and went mad at the patisserie counter, with fancy cupcakes, tortes, eclairs and fondant fancies. Had a funny feeling half way through that the lad serving might have thought it was all for me...
Have got Glastonbury on TV - Amy Winehouse at mo - currently looking very out of it falling all over the audience.

CilC · 28/06/2008 22:31

Oh stilton....mmmmm. And smelly soft cheese... and wine and champagne and....
Sadly may need to get gall bladder out first though.
Has Disney told us who will be after Minkus?

isaidno · 28/06/2008 22:39

glad to hear you finally ordered a pram SK!
Fingers crossed for Minkus xxx

Breastfeeding going well here - seem to be doing alot of it! Poppy had gained 1 oz when she was weighed at 5 days. My nipples are still a bit sensitive (especially when Poppy is overenthusiastic latching on), but the lansinoh stopped any cracks. It was definitely worth the money. I'm wearing my size 10 jeans today - so it is def helping with the weight loss too! (sorry everybody who's peed off because they're enormous!)

sweetkitty · 28/06/2008 22:46

purplejenny - I was just watching Amy on the tv too, looks to me like instead of being up there singing she should be on a drip somewhere, poor girl looks so ill

minkus - hope it's the start of things for you, keep us informed

Thanks CliC and butterfly - can't believe I have finally bought one how long have I been talking about it? I'm a nightmare I decided on a house in 5 minutes flat without seeing inside but pram took ages.

libralady - sorry to hear you are still having problems with the BFing, I think I got you and isaidno confused I think you are doing great expressing is hard work adn very tiring. Only advice I would have is try to keep latching him on as he gets a bit stronger he might start to get it. Have you asked tiktok on a BFing thread on here? Bless your Nan as well, DP is the only boy of any only boy in his family and we are going to have 3 girls so no one to carry on teh family name. Boys are rare in both side of our families.

purplejennyrose · 28/06/2008 23:17

sk, she does look ill. Just read another thread on here slagging her off, but she didn;t look like she really even knew where she was..

EEC · 29/06/2008 07:42

Caught a glimpse of Amy at Glastonbury too. Had to turn it off as I found it too uncomfortable watching her. It was almost like a spoof. Poor thing.

Pleased for you about the pram decision SK. LOL about house /re pram decision making! I've been trying to decide about a hoover for weeks (well years actually!) and am getting nowhwere! Want all features! Large capacity, bagless, light, great for carpets and hard floors, brilliant on cat and dog hair, easy to manouevre. May start a thread elsewhere!

Go there Minkus!

mcchesers · 29/06/2008 08:12

Morning

EEC- we splurged last year and bought a hand held "animal" dyson and have never loved a vacuum cleaner more in my life. With two cats it's ideal and gets into all the grooves between the floorboards and everything.

Nothing seems to ease this itch and it seems to be spreading. I really hope its good news on Tuesday and my liver is ok. I'd feel horrible to put my LO at risk and this itching is so bad I could scream. I'm thinking cool bath is in order.

sweetkitty · 29/06/2008 08:29

Morning was just checking in to see if we had any new arrivals in the night?

Another vote for the Dyson Animal with 3 cats and 2 toddlers it's invaluable, not very light though obviously DP has to do most of the vacuuming right now

Minkus · 29/06/2008 08:48

Grumble grumble I'm still here!

Woke up a few times with cramps in the night and have had a more definite show this morning- thought I'd had one previously when I was in my false labour but this time it was very (old) bloody and so am still hoping that today might be the day! (Although went into labour at 38+5 with ds he "popped" out in the early hours of 38+6- so it's really weird that things are getting moving now!)

Watched Amy last night too, it's such a circus whenever she performs cos we're all naturally interested in whether she's off her head rather than what she's singing. Her voice would have been amazing singing "Cupid" and would have so suited it but she was just too out of it. So sad

Really wanted to stay up for J-Z too but
couldn't make it!

EEC re: hoovers- we have a dyson DC11 Animal and it's great for all those things. It's a cylinger rather than an upright and I find it really easy to use. I don't think it's especially light but because it's so easy to cart about because of the wheels that's not so much of a problem.

More walking here today and a bit of light gardening methinks!

Minkus · 29/06/2008 08:49

Ha ha we love dysons!

Kaz1967 · 29/06/2008 08:55

Twinkle glad to here the boys are doing well although Connor is needing some support still it is actually really common for little ones to pee out sodium so although it is only one of the boys and it is a case of chasing their tail with him try not to fret he may well also need other supplements like potassium because he may well also pee it out and they may give him diuretics to help get him off breathing support and phosphate because babies who are on some sort of breathing support need a little extra (you metabolise it when breathing).

EEC I have been in and out of the hospital since I was 25 weeks and have never been made to feel daft for ringing and going in and it just so reassuring

libralady sorry you are still having problems with the breastfeeding hope it will sort it's self out soon, but remember that stress and tiredness will not help (although nothing you can do about it really you will worry or being tired no matter what) the most important thing is you enjoy Luke I know you want to breastfeed and will try as long as you can, but if it gets too much remember formula is fine you have tried your hardest and he will develop as brilliantly as his sibling.

Re milk supply Sadly one of the most important times to express is between about midnight and 2 am because your hormone levels go up and that is when you can really stimulate it (proof if you needed any god is a bloke with a bade sense of humour ).

Make sure you are looking after your self getting enough rest, eating well and drinking to thirst because you will not get out what you do not put in, I know with a new baby sometimes you forget your self but you need to look after your own needs too made all the harder when you have another child already.

The other thing to think about is are you still bleeding a lot? I'm sure your midwife has already asked and it's probably because he is not sucking at the breast brilliantly but occasionally it can be down to a small piece of retained placenta, my poor SiL suffered from this end of last year it was a real pain. If you are getting a lot of bleeding, it smells etc mention it to your midwife or GP. There are also other things like thyroid function which may need ruling out as low thyroid levels can also effect milk supply as can the hormonal contraceptive.

There are several herbs too which can help Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle, and Red Raspberry. Brewers Yeast (containing B vitamins) is another commonly recommended treatment for low milk supply. My SiL used something called Mother?s Milk Tea which combines several herbs and other things. Talk to your midwife about them some can interfere with other medication. If they do not help there is also 2 drugs which have a side effect of increasing milk supply Domperidone and Metoclopramide (we used to recommend this if all else failed at work but now I believe Domperidone is the recommended drug) but you will need them prescribed by your GP.

The Kellymom siteis one of the best for advice on increasing milk supply I have seen
