do you all stay at home or do you work? if work, what do you do?

cori · 15/02/2005 14:32

I work part time, 3 days a week. I am work with former rough sleepers, ( homeless people) so think lots of mental health problems and drug and alcoholol problems.

Lexie100 · 15/02/2005 14:48

I work for the University of Wales and run a large research project into positive perceptions of families who have children with intellectual disabilites. However, since moving to Kent have been allowed to finish my contract (end of March) and work from home . I also do one day a week with Mind (adult mental health). Dare i say i'm a Psychologist.

bonniej · 15/02/2005 17:06

I am a SAHM and very pleased as last time I had to work and felt very very tired. I've got a 20 month old to look after but I still find it easier than being at work.

morningpaper · 15/02/2005 17:37

URGH mind you Bonnie at least you don't have to cook boiled eggs at work and then feed them to a dribbling two year-old! Blee!

felt quite pregnant with dd even at 4 weeks, at the moment don't really feel "anything",(well, at least I am enjoying my tea as that is usually the first thing I go off)

bonniej · 15/02/2005 18:02

I was in a really boring job though, morningpaper. I used to work in a building society frequented by elderly people. Some days we only used to see three or four customers. Being pregnant and tired I'd often find an excuse to go to the stock room so I could get my head down for a few minutes. At least at home I can nap when dd does. (she's a good sleeper most of the time so I know I'm lucky ) Just starting to go off my morning coffee so looking for an alternative. Any ideas anyone?

Elf1981 · 15/02/2005 18:09

Proper blonde question:
I know certain cheeses are things to avoid, but what about ready made lasanga with those cheese sauces?

Elf1981 · 15/02/2005 18:09

Sorry to any blondes. I just fit the sterotype well and have it used regularly when I ask questions!!

Lexie100 · 15/02/2005 18:48

The only cheese you can't eat is blue cheese (Stilton, Danish Blue) or Brie/Camembert because of Listeria. You can eat hard cheese such as cheddar or soft cheese such as mozzarella, cottage and cheese spreads.

I think your sause should be fine. look onthe ing. list.

hushh · 15/02/2005 19:02

Hi all. I need to get round to making docs appt so I can get in 'the system'. When did everyone else do this ? Any one else an 'older' mum ? I'm 38 & so wonder what the difference will be in terms of care/tests compared to when I had DS (he's 4). I've not got too many symptoms - sore boobs last week but I just feel bloaty & fat. Again I am trying to remember how I felt last time !

SusiS · 15/02/2005 19:11

oh, i completly forgot to tell you what i am. i am a SAHM but didn't anything interesting before that (customer service, german speaking) - so not overly upset that i didn't go back - especially since i am still in contact with some collegues and they keep me informed how mad it is!

hush, i made my app last thursday for the 24th. not sure what they will check though; it's a new surgery for me! and i am an older mum too (36,5) - i remember with ds1 they prechecked for down syndrom (risk for over 35 blablabla); either urin or bloodsample and only if they found something in there they would have done a "proper" test (take some fluid out of the womb i think)

can you believe that!!! i bought new jeans only 2 weeks ago and getting tight already grmmppfff

madness · 15/02/2005 19:12

well, don't have any experience as young mum, had ds at 37 and dd at 39, and am now 41....requested nuchal scan myself with dd, other wise I don't think there was anything "special".

hushh · 15/02/2005 19:16

Wow - can I just add how great this site is for things like this ! I wish I'd discovered it when expecting DS. I don't think they do Nuchal tests near us as routine but its something I wouldn't mind more info on. Guess thats why i need to phone docs.

marinda · 15/02/2005 19:17

Hush I am in your situation exactly - 38 and with a 3.9 year old. Am 7 weeks pg. I am going for a nichal scan but paying privatey- did not fancy amnio due to risk of miscarriage which as high as risk of having down's baby. Feel terrified as it seems I am classed as geriatric - have to see consultant etc... Only went to GP last week. Not seen midwife yet - this is at 10 weeks.

Susi I work 3 days in office. Other 2 days at home with DS.

hushh · 15/02/2005 19:21

I work full time at the moment (god - they are in for a shock ). Yes, I don't want to be classed as an oldmum either. Hopefully the stats are out the window anyway as I conceived very easily - which is why we were so shocked initially. I was quite looking forward to posting on the TTC threads but never got a chance!

SusiS · 15/02/2005 19:30

hushh

marinda · 15/02/2005 19:31

Madness can I ask the results of the nuchal scan ? Sha;; understand if you do not want to sy. Also where I have booked they do a blood test as well - do you know why they do this ? I thought it was to use it with the scan to do a more reliable result. Glad there are other like me )age wise) as I find this whole risk idea so terrifying and lonely !!!

madness · 15/02/2005 19:43

don't do nuchal tests here either on the NHS. However when asked for it first time round (oldfashoned) consultant claimed it wasn't done in this hospital at all, only found out later anmother consultant did do them ....

madness · 15/02/2005 19:49

www.fetalmedicine.com/

with dd the risk aafter combined scan and blood test was 1 in 10 chance of DS. Went on to have CVS, which was OK. Was also told that with positive nuchal test you have increased risk of cardiac and neurological problems (had detailed cardiac scan by pediatric cardiologist as well).
Was quite a scary pregnancy , DD is however a happy healthy girl
Obviously bit scared now as well but hope to be better prepared???

morningpaper · 15/02/2005 19:54

We had no tests but on the 21 week scan we had sevearl positive markers for Downs and had several follow up scans which confirmed these. We didn't want further tests because to be honest we wouldn't have terminated the pregnancy. I was v. upset by people's reactions though because everyone assumed that we would pursue it and terminate.

morningpaper · 15/02/2005 19:55

And as it happened, dd was born with no problems at all!

Indeed Hushh!

Well I've managed to shoe-horn in my evening bowl of porridge and I'm off to BED! Night everyone. Sleeping is definitely my favourite activity at the moment! xx
