Morning all. Glad its not just me who finished work with stuff still to do! Am forgetting about it over the weekend though....

Poppy no idea re: the engaging stuff, but my mw said I was 4/5 when I went on Thursday and that's me just at 36 weeks.

Off to get the car fitted today and visiting the inlaws. Although, hearing about all of debs achievements just wants to make me lie down for a rest...

Dramaqueen - Now we've also washed down all the patio furniture - about 15 chairs and a few tables, so have just had an ice cream sitting outside. just going to hoover the garage/gamesroom, then get changed and wait for the guests.

Maternity leave starts tomorrow!! Then I have a different list of things to do

  1. get our room ready for arrival of baby
2.finally pack bag 3.buy some more nappies and toiletries ( dh managed to lose my online shopping list today)
  1. get mil's room ready for wednesday.
5.etc... etc...

When do you think I'll just be able to sit down and watch TV, and eat chocolate?

No more signs of labour yet here - pretty tired though.

alipalli · 24/05/2008 15:03

Thanks for your birthday greetings yesterday. I had a really nice time with my parents, and I didn't have any major teenage sulky moments, so maybe I am more grown up than I give myself credit for! My Mum and Dad turned up on time, not early as predicted although I did run into them in Tescos about half an hour before hand. For lunch we went to a big farm shop / garden centre / tea rooms place that is nearby. Seemed to meet with parental approval, especially as it turned out that the business has been run for 100 years by my parents' next door neighbour's family. My parents live 100 miles away from me, so a bit of a coincidence. We went for a pub meal in the evening with DH too. So all in all a very enjoyable birthday.

Sounds like things are beginning to move for quite a few of you. Although I am due a week tomorrow I don't think that anything is about to start happening here. Head is now 2/5, but no dramatic BH's or contractions. DH not so impressed by this. He told me that ideally he would quite like LO to come this weekend so that his paternity leave coincides with the 2 weeks of the French Tennis Open. What he does not want to happen is for the baby to come halfway between the French and Wimbledon, so that he misses all tennis during his 2 week "holiday". we'll see...

Good luck to those of you with twinges, and hugs to those of you with babies who are feeling the strain. I'm sure we will all be in the same boat soon enough.

alipalli · 24/05/2008 15:11

Forgot to say...bought some arnica in Neal's Yard today (200c). Recommendation on the dose was to take 1 when labour starts and then daily until I stop feeling "ouchy". Thought you might be interested to know that the lady suggested that DH takes one when I am in labour himself as it is meant to be quite calming.

Looking at DH who is just about the most laid back person I know I don't think I want him any calmer that he currently is, but for those of you with anxious DH/DP's it might be worth slipping one in the tea!

Debs not surprised you are tired. Please sit down, eat some chocolate and watch some TV.

poppy34 · 24/05/2008 15:25

debs any chance of you getting the older boys to play a special new game that involves tidyign up and getting the various rooms ready.. or is that my hormones making me wildly fanciful?

allipalli -interesting re arnica - as had heard you were meant to take it bit before birth (but that sounded bit confusing) -what your lady said maeks more sense. Also had a big recommendation from a friend to use the neals yard bubble birth with arnica (there is one of htem that has it in) -she raved about it really helping afterwards.

Lol re your dh's plans.. my dh didn't seem to think this sounded at all unreasonable (but then thank god we're now nearly at the end of rugby season or he might have insisted on an elective c section for me )

whinegums · 24/05/2008 16:03

Hi everyone, hope the weekend going well for you all.

Deb, I've just noticed that play.com have a Samsung NV11 (10.1 mps, video, lots of features) for £99 - RRP is something like £250. I've just ordered one - it's the update of the NV10 which I had for work and really liked. You can use promotional code experience08 for an extra £5 off too. There's quite a few online reviews of it; total bargain at that price.

systemsaddict · 24/05/2008 17:02

Nice day today! Took ds to his signing class and then he was so perky afterwards we drove into town with him on reins, got him new shoes (I have been stressing about him outgrowing his shoes while I am too occupied with baby to get him new ones) and picked up a few bits, plus painkillers and cough linctus for dp. It's v. rare I get to go into town these days as the walk flares my SPD up, but having him on reins was easier than the pushchair and he was really, really good. Then he was so knackered he's been asleep from 2.30 till now! My muscles were knackered after the walking, with a sore back and fierce BH again, but this gave me time to doze and do my pregnancy hypnosis CD, and they have eased up a bit now.

I've also had time to go through the book that finally helped me teach ds to sleep through (at 8 mths) to see what she says about newborns, so I have my 'newborn sleep plan' on one sheet of A4 now. Possibly wildly optimistic - but at least this time I have a strategy to try and avoid ending up with an every-2-hours-a-night waker ...! Am happy to post it if anyone's interested, let me know.

Dp went to work today, sounding absolutely dreadful, but he's too short-staffed to call in sick unless he physically can't make it, but we will dose him up to get through the evening and hopefully he can rest tomorrow. Baby now needs to come at least 14 days late to give him a fighting chance of being able to hold her when she's born ....

Debs I plan to go and buy icecream as soon as he gets home - have been craving some since reading your post!

sophiewd · 24/05/2008 17:31

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend.

SA sorry about your DP sounds very nasty.

DEBS - enjoy your maternity leave, we have 8 in this morning tomorrow and MOnday and then at least 6 for the rest of the week. Luckily DD still in nursery in mornings.

DH sent me to bed this afternoon so managed a couple of hours sleep, was meant to be weeding but did that yesterday and managed to knacker my hip which didn't help sleeping last night or this morning, but my lovely friend has asked us over for lunch tomorrow so looking forward to that. And he also turned down a one night booking for 7 people next week.

On a more sensitive note, we have some friends coming to stay next Sunday for a couple of days, well him definitely, her not so sure yet as she doesn't know whether she has to go to New York for work. We know they have been very quietly trying for children using IVF and sadly have had a couple of miscarriages, so am feeling very sad and slightly awkward with my big belly, any advise on what to say or just let her take the lead? Also we were wanting her to be Godmother to this one but is that being really insensitive?

whinegums · 24/05/2008 19:05

SA - happy to try to be wildly optimistic too, I think you should post your sleep plan. Which book are you using?

Sophie - I would take your lead from your friend where possible - see how genuinely interested she is in talking about the baby, etc. I have one friend who has been trying to conceive for almost 2 years now, I was apprehensive about discussing baby stuff etc with her. She has been really interested in what's been happening, and has kept in touch, etc. But I don't think everyone would feel the same way. I don't think you can or should ignore their situation, but tread carefully. Don't think that's much help really....

goingfor3 · 24/05/2008 19:29

Mkescakes, my milk has also just come in. My boobs do hurt but once he's fed for a few mins they feel better. Nipples no as bad as they have been with the girls, this time I'm not wearing a bra unless I go out, fresh air on the nipples does seem to help.

Harvey is being fab today, feeding every four hours and sleeping inbetween. It's s shame that he's like this because he was upo every hour for a feed last night and I even had to change his nappy last night as he had pooed ( I never change at night!). I had a nice long nap with him this faternoon so hopefully I won't be too frazzled if he is up most of the night.

PregnantPenguin · 24/05/2008 19:38

Hello everyone - hope you're all enjoying the long weekend. Unfortunately today is the day my back has decided that I will not be comfortable no matter what I do. I really hope this is a one off day and not a sign of things to come...

Went to the hosp for a mat wing tour today. Got there for start time of 10.30am, and walking through the car park saw 7 pregnant women in a row...it was like something out of the twilight zone. Turns out the tour was at 9.30am, not 10.30am! At least we enjoyed a lay in anyway. Hopefully will do next week instead....providing LO stays put until then.

I know Deb and Whinegums' messages have been about digital cameras, but does anyone have a good cheap recommendations for a camcorder? The inlaws are based in NZ and being able to send them actual footage of LO rather than just pictures would be wonderful. And it'll also capture some memories for us when we're too sleep deprived to remember anything ourselves.

SystemsAddict - Please post any tips you have to help baby sleep. I'm sure we would all appreciate them - are they GF? (Please don't attack me anyone, we have a copy of GF's book - bought under the counter and in a brown paper bag obviously! We also have Spock and an attachment parenting one, talk about hedging our bets! I haven't actually read any of them yet though...

Sophie - Re: your friend, I don't think you can play down the fact that you're very pregnant and excited about it. My closest colleague at work was due a few weeks before me, but suffered a MC after a couple of months, she then suffered another about 6 weeks ago. And all the time there's me sitting next to her getting bigger every day. However, she was wonderful and has been a complete rock for me and a wonderful friend. I actually think asking your frined to be GM is wonderful, it shows what a wonderful parent you think she will be. Asking her in your baby's life is a lovely thing to do. However, I have been v lucky and not had an MC, so I could be completely wrong about this.....could your DH talk to hers to test the waters?

What do you all call/are planning to call your LO's grandparents? DH's Nan is still alive, so we cannot use Nan or Nanny for his. And even though my Mum is past being aware of anything (alzheimers ) I want her to be known as Gran/Granny (she's Scottish). I don't know how we should refer to DH's Mum and Dad...

debinaustria · 24/05/2008 19:42

Sophie - I thought you'd be busy this weekend, glad your dh turned down the booking for 7 for one night - that's a lot of work for 1 night. Our guests are in and happy, so apart from helping them out with places to go and places to eat we don't have any work as such for a week. Just now got to turn my attention to the tip that is our home!!

Re you friend, you obviously can't ignore your pregnancy at this stage, you'll just have to play it be ear and see how she is, she may want to talk about it , or not. The fact that you realise what a sensitive time it will be for her means that it will go OK.

Allipalli - my dh is a tennis fan too and disappointed that there wasn't a tv in the labour room ( i didn't even notice). I'm going to get some arnica too. Every little helps, but I won't give any to dh - he'd probably just fall asleep!

And I am going to sit down and have crackers and cheese and a glass of milk now( just nibbled a choc chip cookie whilst typing - I made a big batch and froze them so that I wouldn't eat too many - they are delicious eaten straight from the freezer!!!!

Poppy - My boys just see straight through the special game idea now, sometimes it has to be plain bribery!!!They are quite helpful, they set the table and clear away, they get their own breakfast(handy at the weekend),etc..etc.. tomorrow they have to tidy up the lounge as otherwise they can't watch Indiana Jones(the old film, not the new one). At the moment it looks like an explosion in a lego factory, and we've been so busy with the guest apartment it's got worse and worse!!!

Whinegums - thanks, will look at that camera

SA - I'd be interested to see your newborn sleep plan. Keep those legs crossed for 2 weeks, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that your dh feels better soon.

sophiewd · 24/05/2008 19:46

Thanks for the messages, I did broach the subject with her DP and see where we go from there, we have talked about her being GM from before this one was concived so not a new idea. Knowing them we will sit they will all get drunk ( I would normally as well) and we will talk about everything.

Right food and the Eurovision.

PearTart · 24/05/2008 19:46

Sophie- I also had a friend who had tried IVF and she confided that it's inevitable that you notice the one thing you are missing out on. Don't feel bad for your bump, and do include her as much as you can, within her capacity to be interested. She may feel worse if you skirt around the issue of children.

Alipali- V glad you had a nice birthday and didn't feel the need to rebel! (did they notice to day-glow toes?)

Alipali & Poppy- The Neal's Yard bath stuff is called Seaweed & Arnica and it's luurrvvely. (Far nicer than the name suggests) A friend bought it for me last time and I totally recommend it. It's now a staple in my bathroom.

Deb- slow down! (or come over here and help me out!) Sending you a virtual fat-boy sofa with superglue on the seat and a magnum (ice-cream not champers)

sophiewd · 24/05/2008 19:46

Sorry missed aout that My DH will have a chat with hers and see where we go.

Upsidedowncake · 24/05/2008 19:47

Hi everyone

Thanks to second and third timers for sharing your head-engaging stories, partiucularly Peartart and Josey! I have stopped panicking now - and actually the BHs have calmed down a bit.

I am now encouraging DH to go to Vienna next weekend as it will be only 37 weeks. I have a docs appointment on Tuesday so I may see if she'll do a VE and confirm that I'm not remotely dilated and it's fine for DH to go! (A world away from you, Josey!)

Debs, you one busy lady. How are your nesting instincts usually? How are you feeling today? And thanks for letting us know how Ernest is doing.

Allipalli - pmsl - is he planning on having Roland Garros on in the delivery room????

Sophie, I would second what Whinegums said. The other thing is that the drugs for IVF can make people act not quite themselves. I'm sure you are very good at playing things by ear though.

Exhausting day today - DS has been really contrary and says 'No' to everything. He's very tearful as well. He turned 2.6 on Tuesday, so perhaps it's the terrible twos, or perhaps he still has residual irritation and frustration from the pox ...

Good luck to everyone and their contractions.

OP posts:
debinaustria · 24/05/2008 19:49

G43 - sounds like Harvey is doing very well, but would be even better if he swapped his day /night routine eh?

PP - I would ask the Grandparents what they want to be called. Mil is Grandma, my Mum wanted to be called Nanny which I didn't like but it's up to her, and they have 2 Grandads. When I was little I had 2 Nanas , one was blonde and the other was dark haired. Imagine my Mums delight when I was on the bus and said in my loudest voice - are we going to white nanas or black nanas today Mummy. I was a very fair haired girl with blue eyes!!

Upsidedowncake · 24/05/2008 19:51

Aberdeen, thanks for your lovely comment on the blog. Are you happy with the pram?

OP posts:
Upsidedowncake · 24/05/2008 20:08

X-posts with loads of you. Just waiting for Eurovision!

Debs, like the cookies straight from the freezer. I still don't think they would last very long in my house!

Sophie, it sounds like a good idea for the two DHs to have a chat first. x

OP posts:
spongebrainbigpants · 24/05/2008 20:54

Hi guys, I'm back from my holiday - and with a new nickname! I decided that with my job and the fact that I know a couple of people from RL whom I want to avoid may be hanging around MN, that I wanted to be a little more anon, so have changed my name and removed the piccies of me from my profile!

Essie, thanks for missing me - I wasn't having splodge, I was just having a much needed holiday with my lovely dh!

Many many congrats on the births that have taken place since I've been away, GF3 and makecakes - given that this is the 'Due in June' thread we're not doing badly with 4 babies already and it's only 24th May!

I am now watching Eurovision, and waiting for hubby to cook me supper. Have been reading "Childbirth without Fear" while I've been on holiday and feel quite romantic about the whole birth thing now - feel I may be in for a very nasty shock! (Example of quote from book: "the first stage of labour does not hurt" ! This book is written by a man, so how the f**k would he know!

Hubby calling, check in again later if anyone else is around on a Saturday evening!

PiggyPenguin · 24/05/2008 20:55

PP - my dh's nan is also still around so she is nanny, mil is grandma and my mum is momma (pronounced mom-mar) which is a midlands/northern thing. They only have one grandad, so that isn't as confusing.

Deb - I so need some of your energy. I had to nap for 2 hours today and had barely done anything.

After Makecakes fantastic photo have bought a swaddle robe today, dd and I spent a very happy half hour practising on her dolls. Then we practised with the hotsling. Baby born was very happy with all the attention apparently!

systemsaddict · 24/05/2008 21:19

OK for those who wanted it my plan is as follows - with the caveat that you can all laugh at me in 6 weeks time when I am despairingly walking up and down the halls with an unsettlable baby who only sleeps in a car seat!! Sorry this'll be a bit long.

It's mostly from a US ebook called 'The Sleep Sense Program' which I bought in desperation as it looked pretty hokey but which was actually a lot of common sense, and was what finally worked for us with ds. GF was far too scary for me, attachment parenting completely convinced me for months but I think had downsides as well as upsides for all of us, then we tried the 'No Cry Sleep Solution' book for a while, which was great on no cry but not such a good sleep solution! (for us - I know it has worked for others.)

So, my plan this time is to:

  • Distinguish daytime and nighttime for her , ie keep 7am-7pm(ish) as bright and active as possible while she's awake, and 7pm-7am(ish) dim lights and quiet voices.

  • In the daytime, try and do wake-eat-play-sleep rather than feeding to sleep. If she goes to sleep on the breast, try and keep her awake by any means necessary - blowing, tickling, cold flannel on feet etc.

  • Put her to sleep in her cot (co-sleeper crib to start off with) for naps BEFORE she is actually asleep, looking out for her tiredness cues early, and not expecting her to be awake much more than an hour at any one time to start off with.

  • Avoid using sleep props (dummy, walking, rocking, driving, feeding to sleep) unless we're absolutely desperate - the goal is for her to learn to fall asleep without them from early on.

  • Avoid stimulating toys in the cot - keep the cot for sleeping, with one nice soft thing for her to hopefully get attached to.

  • Simple bedtime routine in the evening - probably change / massage / books (bath every night is just too much work!) - ending in a good feed before early bedtime, again, putting her down in her cot while still just awake. If she cries, pick her up and soothe her till she stops, as often as it takes, but still try hard to put her down while still slightly awake. (My secret plan is to get dp to do this bit, while I get some quality time doing ds' bedtime stories etc.)

  • Night feeds: don't grab her and feed her as soon as she stirs; give her a minute or two when she first wakes to see if she settles again, then change before feeding (to delay gratification a bit so she doesn't get trained into wake>cry>immediately fed and snuggled back to sleep), and put her back in her cot before she is fully asleep, if at all possible. (This will be the hardest bit and I don't know if I'll manage it, as I think we're both likely to drift off while I feed her in bed ...)

The aim with all of this is that she is given the opportunity to learn to settle herself to sleep, rather than relying on me each time she wakes. I have all this written down and will stick it up in the bedroom for when my brain turns to cheese! fingers crossed ..... Of course if she is uncomfortable, has reflux or colic or some other mystery baby ailment, or has trouble gaining weight, this will all probably go out of the window, so I'm aware it's very much a hopeful scenario; but I did want to at least start with a plan this time!

alipalli · 24/05/2008 21:32

Pleased to hear that I am not the only one with DH who appreciates the tennis (and most other sport). I don't think the maternity unit has TVs in the rooms though

I will look into the Neal's Yard seaweed and arnica bath soak. Thanks for the suggestion.

Major progress on girl's names this evening. We now have 4 possibilities that we both like, as opposed to none. Phew.
