We are two down and have another 30-40 to go. Makecakes and Gemma have probably popped by now, then G43! It's all happening!!!!!

I agree with SA..sound like the real deal to me Josey and wouldn't it be better to get DH back for nothing rather than ending up on your own for labour?

PiggyPenguin · 23/05/2008 15:49

Oooh, Josey, keep us posted because that is sounding very positive. Maybe you will be the next on the hatched list!

Neenz - concentrate on yourself and those babies. Get as much rest as possible and remember that we will still be here afterwards and whenever you need to post.

My hotsling arrived today and it is really cool. I only ordered it yesterday so am amazed at how quickly it has arrived. DH is very jealous though so may have to buy big one for him. Off to scout out whats availoable on ebay...

josey · 23/05/2008 16:53

Well who knows...have told DH about the grumblings etc and we have just decided to ride it out for the sake of 24hours...if anything happens Mum will come over. I have taken a couple of paracetamol and drinking raspberry leaf tea...so if it happens it happens....I have a really weird urge to push that bit harder when I go to the loo which is aiding what Im thinking is a clear out happening....anyway Im going to force myself to stop surfing for answers I should know by now there isnt any....try take my mind off it and focus on a date far far away lol

Rolf · 23/05/2008 17:12

Harvey is gorgeous, G43 .

Neenz - hope you get some sleep. These first few months are like no other experience on earth!

Deb - I'm really sorry, but I cancelled my subscription a few months ago.

Rolf · 23/05/2008 17:15

How exciting, Josey . I've been fretting these last few days about what I'd do if I went into labour - DH isn't far away (an hour or two) but until the in-laws arrive it would be a bit of a scrabble to sort out childcare. Hope it sorts itself out.

TGF - sorry the ECV didn't work. You've definitely given it your very best shot though, haven't you? You'll be able to go into the birth knowing that you did as much as you could.

whinegums · 23/05/2008 17:59

Deb, I have a Which subscription. What do you want?

debinaustria · 23/05/2008 18:51

Thanks anyway Rolf.

Whinegums I want advice on which digital camera is worth buying - at the cheap end of the market but with decent video. You can email me
through our site Thanks

Update from ernest - she says Congrats to G43, she has gone into hospital to try to get some relief from the itching, she's packed her bag just in case as she's felt weird today.

bitofadramaqueen · 23/05/2008 19:11

Evening all, just thought I'd pop in to say hi. It was my last day at work today, although I have brought a couple of things home to finish off which is naughty! However, people kept popping in etc all day and I had a 3 hour lunch break so just didn't get chance to do anything. If anyone hasn't finished yet, dont do what I did and leave clearing out your desk till the last minute - it took me ages and I've got bags of crap home that I need to go through.

Had lovely last day lunch with lots of people in my office though and lovely generous presents so that was nice.

There have been loads and loads of posts today so cant possibly take everything in. Neenz hope you feel better soon, dont be giving yourself a hard time and rest rest rest when you can.

whinegums · 23/05/2008 19:22

DQ, welcome to mat leave! I too have a huge pile of stuff to go through. It's truly amazing how much one acquires.... I still have a couple of things to do, mostly because of our crap IT team - our system was down on my last day yesterday, so I couldn't finish some things off.

Ok Deb, will email it.

I have a really sore top of bump. Not like a crampy pain. Not quite sure how to describe it. Maybe monster is giving me a good old squeeze or something.

Upsidedowncake · 23/05/2008 20:23

Hi there

Goingfor three - what a lovely story. I'm pleased that it all went well for you. And your little boy is gorgeous. Wow!

Neeenz - sorry that you are getting so tired and that your DH can't really help at night. If you can bear routines, Gina Ford has some stuff on breastfeeding twins in the early days, but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. I think you're amazing to have done well with two so far. We'll be here when you get back.

TGF - sorry that your ECV didn't work, but I'm so glad that you had a positive experience with this particular doctor. It sounds like you may be able to have a vaginal birth in Bristol before 2 June if you need to. That's fab!

Oooh, Josey, so exciting! I'll keep my legs crossed for you for this weekend.

Paro, exciting re contractions. It's great that you are having so much care as they will be able to tell you what's going on.

My news is that after my taxi ride and BHs lat night, I think the baby has engaged further as I am limping around like John Wayne. I haven't been expecting any action until at least 40 weeks (as there wasn't any last time until then, and was induced at 42 weeks with Bishops score of 1). For those of you who have had two, I presume the fact that the head is engaged doesn't mean anything?

DH was about to book next weekend in Vienna (37 weeks)to see his brother but has cancelled it as the doula is away that weekend, and he didn't want to leave me without both my birth partners. Are we overreacting?????

Will pack hospital bag tomorrow just in case.

makecakesnotwar · 23/05/2008 21:00

G43- congrats- he looks fab, and well done on the birth...

Neenz- hope things are looking up- I seem to spend all my afternoons in tears.

Glad you all liked the swaddling-I've had a lot of practice. STill doesn't prepare you for your own.

My milk finally came in today, and so did the 'being stabbed by knives' thing I had been warned about. Any tips from you guys for getting through it- I want to keep going but sit sobbing during every feed. (sorry first-timers in waiting...)

systemsaddict · 23/05/2008 21:03

UDC my baby's head has been engaged for at least 2 probably 3 weeks now - everything I found online said '2nd babies often engage much nearer birth' so I got v. excited to start off with but it hasn't led to anything more yet! Though I think you are probably being sensible to make sure you're not left without a birth partner at this stage.

Dp came home from work in agony - collapses in half each time he coughs - he is sure it is the same as the pleurisy he had last time, same pain in the same place and same history, so not dangerous but v. painful and v. debilitating, he really can't do anything. So I put ds to bed, put baby car seat in car (it arrived back with us today and we needed to get it out of the house, as ds thought it was a seesaw!) and went and got Chinese. All this physical activity has set off really fierce BH - I feel like we're in a soap opera, with me breathing through contractions and dp unable to move to help! Fairly sure it's nothing more than BH but is all v. dramatic! so am going to bed in the hope it all eases off....

mellymell · 23/05/2008 21:05

Makecakes, Gf3 - many congrats - you are so clever and brave.

Neenz - take it easy - well as easy as you can and accept as much help as possible. Important to keep that milk flowing and it is amazing that the smallest thing disrupts it. Also, the advice I've heard is make sure you eat properly - 4 meals a day which includes cake and toast at tea time .

I'm getting bored with being at home all day which is pathetic since I've only been here for 2 weeks. It is however lovely to be around DS much more and he has calmed down from the excitement of me being around the whole time. Made me realise what a lovely boy he is and how lucky I am.

Well, hospital bag is more or less packed. Am having lots of BHs, but I think I probably have another 10 days to 2 weeks to go. Trying to do some exercise, but walking just knackers my back and inner legs, so am concentrating more on pampering myself - reflexology today and yesterday sorted out the lady jungle - agonies - they did warn me that you are a bit more sensitive down there when preggas

Anyway, walking lots tomorrow - country fair just up the road with hen racing - can't wait - will be hilarious!!!!

systemsaddict · 23/05/2008 21:13

makecakes everyone tells you breastfeeding 'shouldn't hurt' but it has to start off with for nearly everyone I know - think we should be better prepared! Having gone through this last time my tips would be:

  • Get as much real life advice as you can: see a trained breastfeeding counsellow, get in touch with La Leche League, NCT and / or other breastfeeding helplines for specific advice on your particular situation. And read online advice too.
  • Make sure positioning is right (it's fine to use lots of cushions and pillows esp in early days, you don't want to be trying to hold the baby up and get them in the right place at the same time). As someone quoted on here before, tummy to mummy, nose to nipple. I found lying down to feed much easier to get positioning non-painful, but this depends on your body shape - one advantage of my big floppity boobs, they lay nicely on the bed for this
  • Try and make sure baby's mouth is v. wide open to latch on - a narrow latch will cause pain.
- Use lots of Lansinoh. - Keep your nipples well-aired - let them hang free at every possible opportunity. - If it keeps on beyond a few days, get yourself and baby checked for thrush, and get baby checked for tongue tie

Now I really am going to bed, I'm sure others will have advice too! It's completely worth sticking it out as in the long term it's so much the easy option, but everyone needs lots of support to get through those first few days, it's so hard to be in pain when you're already exhausted and baby blues-ish.

On which, I have read that crying is one way your body gets rid of the excess hormones so is physiologically beneficial at this point!

josey · 23/05/2008 21:27

SA doesnt sound as though things are fun in your house hope your DH gets better and your BHs stop.

Makecakes the stabbing is awful, curl your toes count to ten and if it still hurts break the suck and start again....though I was crap at BFing so someone else will have better advice...hot facecloths help as well.

Upside they say 2nd 3rd babies engage later DD was on the day she arrived..its different for everyone but I wouldnt want to be alone...says me sitting by her jack jones wondering if she is in labour lol!!!

Planning going to bed soon and shoving a plug between my legs and hope nothing starts till DH gets home lol!

dylansmumplusone · 23/05/2008 21:50

i have to say this thread is amazing. makes me wish i had known about mumsnet when i had ds!!

makecakes i echo what others have said. it DOES hurt at first, especially when your milk comes in and it feels like your boobs are going to explode. i also cried and cried (good release, don't fight it!) and thought i must be doing everything wrong. but you aren't! you're doing everything right and i promise it will get better! definitely use LOTS of lansinoh it really, really helps!! and make sure her mouth is stuffed as full as possible with (mostly the bottom under the nipple) boob!! hang in there! xxxx

even though mw told me head is 'engaged' the baby is def moving further down. what a painful process! i don't remember this with ds at all. funny what the mind block out... or is it just different with the 2nd one??

katyjo · 23/05/2008 23:01

Hi all,

makecakes sorry your having a rough time, I liked what someone said on here, crying is your body's way of getting rid of the excess fluid you've been carrying around for nine months - I intend to cry loads! My Dh thought I was having a breakdown just after my milk came in so don't worry. Try to get as much hands on help as you can with bf, its hard to know what to tell you iykwim. The other ladies have covered everything I can think of, def lots of lasinoh and if you need to take the baby off break the seal with your little finger - pulling baby off makes nipples bleed!

Have been bouncing on ball, crawling on all fours and trying really hard to get baby to move round and engage when ready, but I think he/she may just have engaged further but still op !

Good luck to all those who think things maybe underway debs josey paro just about everyone very - hope things happen soon!

bitofadramaqueen · 23/05/2008 23:22

Thanks whinegums. I too have a sore top of bump but its on the skin so maybe a bit different to yours! I've worked out that its being caused by boobs resting on top of bump with a bit of bra friction thrown in for good measure. It's agonising. What I wouldn't give to put on a well fitted underwired bra to lift them up out of the way just now.

Too tired to respond to other posts this evening, but to all, good luck to those with movements and sympathies to those with aches and pains.

I haven't has ad much as a BH so share your katyjo.

debinaustria · 24/05/2008 07:05

Good morning everyone, the room is finally finished - painting done, flooring laid and ready to go!! Hurrah, so I've just cleaned the bathroom, then I need to clean floors, hoover and we're ready then for the guests. Feels like we're coming to then end of such an endless task, dh has done a really good job.

Next job is to tackle the wilderness which should be a garden!!

No more signs of labour here, I was struggling doing much yesterday but I've woken up full of energy, so I'm trying to do as much as I can this morning before I run out!!

Hope you're all OK

neenz - how was your night, was it better with dh helping out?

makecakes - how's the bfeeding going?

SA - Hope your dh gets better soon.

I have to echo what Dylansmum said - this thread is amazing, it's such a great support for me as there's no-one else here who is pregnant, and friends are few and far between. So, thank you everyone.

sophiewd · 24/05/2008 07:10

Its' too blardy early to be working after a really bad nights sleep.

josey · 24/05/2008 08:31

SW hope you manage to get a rest later.

Debs are you sure you should be using up all that sudden energy

I ended up crying in bed about 3am as I couldnt get to sleep for heartburn and aches and pains....why is late pregnancy so bloody mean at times...Due to pick DH up this avo so think I might talk him into a Curry and a bonk tonight though he would rather I held off for another week or so MEN REALLY DONT GET IT DO THEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Parofleurmapu · 24/05/2008 09:52

b) Try and get you Dp to come in to your work today for some reason was...." Ive got to try and make you come into work with me today so they can give you your pressie"!!!!!! Blesshim So will have to act all surprised!!!

PearTart · 24/05/2008 10:01

Bump has dropped considerably- it's a good couple of inches lower and sticking out more at the front. I'm now bumping it on the computer desk and kitchen table where I didn't before. My friends have all commented on it and even DH has noticed the change. Thought this was supposed to happen later with 2nd babes. Went swimming y.day and when I got out of the pool it felt like someone had put a cannon ball in my pelvis and I had to sit on the poolside lounger chair for a bit unitl tummy relaxed.
No other signs of anything imminent apart from even more frequent weeing.
That's all that's going on here.

Deb- could your energy- rush be a pre-labour thing??? Well done on sorting out the flooring etc. We're off to look for a garden shed today...

Josey- enjoy your curry and bonk- You deserve it in more ways than one! (they never will quite get it)

Sophie- hang in there, when do you get a break form all this hard work?

Makecakes- hang in there too, it will get better.

g43- congratulations. BDQ also packed in work yesterday and also still have bits to do due to extended goodbye lunches.

Para/debs/josey.. fingers crossed that things keep moving quickly.

Has there been any news from Gemma or did I miss something (V.difficult to keep up sometimes).

Feeling very sleepy now .. not sure that this is a sign of anything apart from fact my natural idleness being made worse by bump.

Incidentally although in position she is still not engaged (is 5/5)- any brighter people out there any idea when babies generally engage on first pregnancy?
