Hi All,

was wodnering if I could join you? my estimated due date is 2nd October which makes me just over 19 weeks. I have my 20 week scan next friday at Royal Free in Hamsptead. Any advice for the scan? the hospital has said that a full bladder isn;t needed but should i drink plenty of water before I go in to be on the safe side?

rosebury · 08/05/2008 11:28

Morning ladies bladder feeling better today.

Snowymum weight gain is quite personal I have probably gained the same as you but I am not getting on those scales. I am normally quite slim and go to the gym 4 or5 times a week I work out very hard and so whenever I stop exercising I gain half a stone immediately, please dont worry about it unless you already had issues about your weight before you got pregnant.

Lozzo sciatica is awful I had it with one of my pregnancies for a long time kept thinking it would sort itself out but it never did. Maybe you could discuss it with your midwife as there may be a physiotherapist locally that works with pg ladies or you could see if there is a good osteopath but you may have to pay for that one approx £35 depending where you live but it would be money well spent if it eases that awful nagging pain.

We had a lovely day out on Monday at Noahs ark zoo farm in Wraxall Bristol nice place to go but we made the mistake of not taking a picnic there is only one cafe and an ice cream kiosk we were hungry and thirsty but the queues were horrific and they stopped serving food at 3pm. So if anyone wants to go take a picnic and plenty to drink the car park is outside the farm but you can return to the car to collect things you do not have to carry them with you.

Sorry no advice on british holidays I am in the same boat need to go away July August but I do not want to pay a lot of money to hokiday in the rain I think we will wait and see and probably go at the last minute.

Off now to get the sun lounger out.

bethoo · 08/05/2008 11:32

welcome firstimer, i never had a full bladder with my 20 week scan with ds as they usually say the baby is big enough to see as a full bladder usually pushes the 12 week foetus up so easier to see/find.
are you also feeling movements? cos if you are i am already!!

rosebury · 08/05/2008 11:32

1stimer if they have said a full bladder is not needed then that is ok some hospitals want it and others do not I do not know why maybe it is the type of scanner they use.

bethoo · 08/05/2008 11:35

snowymum to help you feel better i gained 13 pounds in first 7 weeks! but i think alot of it you will find is just water retention. best to weigh first thing in te morning. since my encounter wiht the scales that one time i have not been on since but needless ot say i think i lost it (hoping i did!!) as like i said alot of it is water.
anyway dont go near the scales, go by how you look and apart from my bump i look normal

bethoo · 08/05/2008 11:36

rosebury maybe your sonographers like to see the ladies suffer as some sort of sado masichism??

accessorizequeen · 08/05/2008 11:43

I've put on nearly a stone so far, I'm justifying as twins but I've just been stuffing my face really. Nothing I can do about it now except slow down! I've been comfort eating as finding it hard to deal with impending twins really.

Re; water for scan - drink half a litre half an hour beforehand are the hospital guidelines round here. Anymore, any sooner and you'll be bursting as I have found to my cost. I did that for recent scan (at 17 wks) and it was fine.

minervaitalica · 08/05/2008 12:17

Snowymum,

I am the same - I put on 6.5kg already (about 13 pounds) and I am only 18+6. And this despite exercising regularly and trying to eat healthily. I think we may just have to forget it and try to get back to "normal" afterwards...

Thanks, ladies, for the cheering words about weight!

Like you Rosebury, up till October last year I trained (martial arts) 4 times a week, and ate what I wanted but healthily and maintained 10st 4lbish (at 5'5''), which I was happy with as I was very fit, and looked nice (always had relatively big legs, but with lots of lean muscle they're fine). Then I stopped training when we seriously got down to TTC, because there's a lot of kicking and punching to the belly and obviously that wouldn't have been ideal!

So a combination of morning sickness (the sort where you have to eat all the time to stop feeling sick, just my luck), complete inactivity due to feeling sick and probably water retention (my calves look so weird and puffy and firm to the touch in the wrong sort of way if you see what I mean) mean it's just shot on.

And even worse, my fitness has almost completely disappeared - so quickly. I get slightly breathless going upstairs. It's not fair!

Anyway, I'm going to take your excellent advice and put the scales in the cupboard for the next 6 months. And wear my excellent new trousers from isabella oliver which make me look - well, not like i look without them on!

perkypopsy · 08/05/2008 14:26

Hi Everyone been super busy at work so not getting time to post these days - hope everyone well and enjoying the sunshine - I'm off to mums for weekend for some R&R Bliss!

07mumstheword · 08/05/2008 16:57

CSWS Thanks for that we did think about France, will look into it a bit further.

Rosebury We've been to Noah's Ark and really enjoyed it. I live in Bristol do you?

Welcome 1sttimer

All this talk of weight got me on the scales this morning and I've out on about 5lb which I think is ok for 16 wks especially as I've done nothing but eat. They say 9 months on 9 months off don't they? So by July next year I might be getting back to "normal"

sambrads · 08/05/2008 17:31

hi ladies sorry to put a downer on the thread but i really need to talk to someone .

my cousin who was due a week before has just lost her baby
she went for a scan as she was bleeding yesterday morning and found no heart beat .

she then went th 4 hours of labour and give birth to the baby which she is burying tomorrow .

her husband phoned me this morning and i have cried since have spent all afternon at my mums and she said to stop annoying myself as it will do me no good but how can i !!!??

im devastated and really want to be there for my cousin as were so so close but im sure im the last person she wants to see.

because we are so close in due dates me due 30th sept and her due 26 september everytime she sees me she will think of her lose .

what am i ment to do ??

i am a total nervous wreck now

bethoo · 08/05/2008 18:03

sambrads so sorry to hear that. it really does bring it home how vulnerable our babies are even past the 12 week mark. all i can suggest is either a card or a phone call to say how sorry you are and that you are there for her whenever she needs/is ready to talk. i agree she may feel sad on seeing you at first but give her time.

07mumstheword · 08/05/2008 18:29

Oh Sambrads I'm so sorry to hear your cousins sad news, how devestating I just can't imagine her pain.
I agree with Bethoo that letting her know you are there is a good idea and perhaps you could add that you understand how difficult it maybe for her to see you so she knows how considerate you are trying to be towards her (not knowing whether to run round and give her a hug, yet not wanting to impose in your condition)
Tomorrow will be a sad day my thoughts will be with you. (((hugs)))

Lozza70 · 08/05/2008 19:18

Sambrads what sad news. I think the advice so far has been good. Try and let her know you are there for her but understand she may need some time to be able to cope with seeing you.Maybe some of the people on the miscarriage thread may be able to give you some advice from the other point of view.

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/05/2008 21:33

Welcome 1sttimer.

for your cousin sambrads. I would not assume that she doesn't want you around, esp as you say that you are very close, but give her a ring, or drop her a text (just in case she doesn't feel up to talking) and ask.

Possibly bad news here too, though not of that scale. Seems that there's prob more chance that I have type 2 diabetes (which means a lifelong condition) rather than gestational. Have to do blood tests 4 times a day for nearly 3 weeks before they have enough info to decide for definite whether I have any sort of it or not though. Next appointment is on Monday morning, when I'll see 2 consultants, a midwife, and a dietician.

I am sorry to hear abt ur cousins lost. I can totally understand what u must be going thru. Even my cousin lost her baby girl few weeks back. She was 2-3 weeks ahead of me. After the painful labour they took the baby and placenta to examine but i guess they cudnt find any reason as to why baby could not survive. Just try to relax and dunt stress yourself. Its not good for u.

My thoughts are with your cousin and her family.

Jambers99 · 09/05/2008 07:43

Sambrads, what sad news for your cousin. I agree with what the others have said - stay in touch and let her know that you're there for her if she needs you. I'm sure she will find it hard as your pregnancy continues, but it doesn't necessarily mean she doesn't want to see you. She'll probably find it just as hard seeing other pregnant women in the street, but at least she can talk to you about how she's feeling.

sambrads · 09/05/2008 08:30

Thoughts are with you and your family today Sambrads CSWS That's awful for you to have to test 4 times a day for 3 whole weeks you'd think in this day and age there would be any easier way to find out. I hope at the end of all the testing that it wont be a life long condition.

Sambrads, that's terrible news. We heard of someone here at work that had a similar thing, she lost her baby few days before she was due. It's so sad. Sending lots of hugs to get you through today.

In terms of scan, ok I'll just go in without the full bladder as it doesn;t mention anything on the letter of instructions.

In terms of movement.. feel a few bubbles here and there but some days I don't feel anything, so I'm quite worried. Not sure if this is normal, but just going to hang tight until my scan next week.
