Thanks Denny we know we can do whatever we feel is best but it's hard not to worry about putting baby at risk.

we think we might ask for 40+11 days so i will be able to see my midwife at 40+10 days (she's only working tues atm) they if things have started we can avoid going in.

I hate this waiting!

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 15/04/2008 11:33

Congrats to all those that had their babies! (Sorry brain is fuzzy and I can't reember who I said ths to already!)

And GOOD LUCK to VS!!

I think the nest thing has started with me - exhausted myself yesterday with all the cleaning and baking I did - even had a friend and her toddler come over for lunch! I slept to 10:30am today!

I've got my midwife appointment today and there are a few things I want to ask her about the care you receive at my hospital after the baby is born. My friend that came over yesterday was telling me how awful it was and it me really hope that I have an easy labout and can go home pronto if I am going to be treated badly! Do you think it rude of me to go asking my midwife about the lack of care?

Scampmum · 15/04/2008 11:39

M2B2BR - I had a 'difficult' labour (ventouse, forceps, spinal, minutes away from emCS) but left 12 hours post-birth - it is not easy but if you/DP are insistent you can manage it! Just needed paed to see DD and my catheter removed (look away now if squeamish) which I absent-mindedly did myself by getting out of the wrong side of bed! Hospital was way too hot and noisy and I was pleased, if a little overwhelmed, to be at home. Would have much preferred it if ILs hadn't been there, though (inc. MIL who put herself between me and my 12hr old daughter on the sofa - YES I will bear a grudge for life!)

Scampmum · 15/04/2008 11:40

Molly - an internal exam isn't the same as a sweep as that's later in labour (and in my experience was pretty painful!).

Hope you are managing OK and looking forward to your Mum coming. You should go out for a nice lunch!

sagitta · 15/04/2008 11:48

Would def agree with Scamp that there are pros and cons to being in hospital. mine had terrible after care (I was put in antenatal ward) - and it was hot and noisy and horrible. You just need to see the paed, get drips out etc, then you can go. It took me 12 hours to get out, same as scamp. But being at home can be quite overwhelming and scary too...

Denny185 · 15/04/2008 12:16

I had terrible after care with DD1, great with DS and so so with DD2. Think it all depends on how busy the ward is when your in and how stretched the MW's are, TBH the best care I had came from the auxillary staff who were lovely. You might find that you have fab time and dont want to come home if the wards are fairly quiet.

scorpio1 · 15/04/2008 12:23

just checking in, had shiatsu this morning. Sweep tomorrow.

Scampmum · 15/04/2008 12:25

Totally assumed there that you had called Millie Shiatsu instead! But then I am going bonkers - thought to myself yesterday 'ooh, must check my phone and see if I've gone into labour' .

Anyway, hope you and little Shiatsu are doing well!

PortAndLemon · 15/04/2008 12:25

Molly -- in UK care (or UK NHS care anyway) you don't normlly get internals until in labour. In the US, where routine internals from about 36 weeks are normal, there's still a difference. For an internal they stick one or two fingers up for a prod to feel how dilated/effaced you are; for a sweep the finger goes through the cervical os and "sweeps" around between the uterine wall and the membranes. Some doctors do just call it a "vigorous internal", though.

Aftercare with DS wasn't awful but IMO you get more comfort and attention at home so I'd always opt for the earliest possible discharge if there are no complications (this time I was out within six hours of arriving, never mind within six hours of birth).

Carey87 · 15/04/2008 12:29

mum2b - my dp SIL got to go home 6 hours after her lo was born so fingers crossed they will let us go frpm PRUH pretty sharpish, also another lady was telling me that she discharged herself after 24 hours and they were fine with it, I think as long as they make all the necessary checks you should be able to just 'walk straight out'

just got back from midwife appointment - baby is still not engaged!!! - she gave me number of hospital to book myself in for a sweep next week

really upset by it all, dont know why thinks me hormones are kicking in again, i cried earlier while watching 24 season 2 and george mason finally left the office to go die after his plutonium poisoning (those die hard 24 fans out there will know what im talking about )

Cxx

Denny185 · 15/04/2008 12:29

lol at scamp

Carey87 · 15/04/2008 12:30

LOL scamp!

Denny185 · 15/04/2008 12:32

Carey dont be too sad some babies dont engage till labour, maybe youve got one of those and its just around the corner.

Denny185 · 15/04/2008 12:33

scorpio do they have a deadline on homebirthing?

scorpio1 · 15/04/2008 12:34

well i have 8 days left before they will induce. They induce at term+12 here. I get a sweep tomorrow.

Denny185 · 15/04/2008 12:38

IF they induce would you be allowed to go back home after pessary or would you have to stay in? Its sods law isnt it having been early with the other 2 that you would have to go over this time.

scorpio1 · 15/04/2008 12:40

Well i was talking with the shiatsu lady today (she does lots of pg women & knows my MW very well) and she reckons no; they will want me on fetal monitoring equipment etc.

I'm not too keen on buying more time either TBH - concerned about my placenta (have lakes on it) and Millie already is slowing down.

TBH if i have to have the baby in hospital i dont really mind, i just want a safe baby.

SuzeM · 15/04/2008 12:43

Hello and congratulations to all the new mums.

Posting quickly as old modem incompatible with new laptop so I have to crank up the old laptop.

I was due yesterday but think I am in for the long haul. My baby is not engaged either, Carey. I had a midwife appointment yesterday. I have to go back next Monday. So lots of walking and raspberry leaf tea in the meantime!

I really regret telling people my due date now.

Anyway, good luck to all those in waiting!

Denny185 · 15/04/2008 12:46

So true scorpio, it dosent matter at the end of the day how or where they come out just as long as they come out safely.

elfsmummy · 15/04/2008 13:05

A complete quicky as I'm off for a nap but to those of you wondering how long to stay in hospital for, I'd wait and check out your bed allocation on the ward! You may be lucky and get a side room or an otherwise empty bay - in which case you'll have more chance of getting a rest and help with establishing feeding etc if required.

Alternatively you might be in a busy bay with a woman with 67 visitors in the bed next door - in which case, I'd pack my bags on arrival on the wards and tell them you want out asap!

That's my plan anyway. Was lucky with DD and got a side room - who knows this time!

paranoidmummy · 15/04/2008 13:07

lol at 24 carey. that is THE saddest episode even without being preg!

scorpio1 · 15/04/2008 13:08

wonder if VS is a mummy again yet?

Carey87 · 15/04/2008 13:14

paranoidmummy - i know!!! when i first saw him i thought 'what a pric*' but then when he got more and more sick i just wanted him to stay!! god im so sad!!!

Cx

TheMaskedPoster · 15/04/2008 13:30

Ref about baby being engaged ... DD2 wasn't engaged before labour AND my waters didn't break either. When MW went to check me when I got to hospital etc - I was fully dilated, ready to push and she said 'oh, your waters haven't broken - that happens sometimes'. Thinking back, that is one of the reasons why I didn't go to the hospital sooner as I kept telling myself 'well, my waters haven't broken, so it may not be real labour' .
All I can say is lucky there was no traffic hold ups on that particular Tuesday - otherwise DH would have been delivering (oh the mind boggles!! )

scorpio1 · 15/04/2008 14:02

i am about Jeremy Kyle today!
