Libbysister

I love what you just said. Not much to be said for being a perfectionist - it makes you miserable! I got better with dd but am aiming for a lot more relaxed with dc3

RIGHT I really must do some work. I am writing a policy impact analysis (yawn)

TwilightSurfer · 09/04/2008 15:22

Well my DD was totally on formula by week three and she didn't sleep through the night until she was.................probably TWO YEARS OLD. Very of your good sleepers.

Taking DD to her doctor at 1:45pm. Her tummy concerns me and I just want some guideance. She probably just needs probotics (forgive the spelling). She also has a drainage cough that's just sounding worse so I'm hoping he'll offer a breathing treatment (because I'm not going anywhere near antibiotics with her for a LONG WHILE). I think I might just tell him I just can't handle her being sick at all right now, emotionally. He knows I'm pregnant and a worrier so surely he'll do something to make me happy.

Hanging out in my little cafe with a cup of tea and a cinnamin (again spelling) roll. Seems all my RL friends are running errands. Oh well. Will probably go wander a few shops until DD is out of preschool. Shopping is always theraputic....emotionally not financially.

TwilightSurfer · 09/04/2008 15:25

Here Here I AGREE...Perfectionism isn't all it's cracked up to be. After DD was a year old I decided from this point forward I was going to live as imperfectly as possible. It's a goal I do achieve quite well EACH AND EVERY DAY.

longwayfromhome · 09/04/2008 15:28

Breast pumps. Very interesting to read. Would you recommend that I think about buying one then? I hadn't really given it a thought, just imagined that I would try to breast feed, and see what happened. Hmm, another tricky one to try to translate into spanish ...

TwilightSurfer · 09/04/2008 15:37

After all the trouble I had...YES purchasing or renting a HIGH end (hospital grade) breast pump is a very good idea.

libbyssister · 09/04/2008 15:38

My breast pump brought me a bit more freedom LWFH. Great to be able to go to bed early/go out knowing that DH could feed DS expressed milk. And I got the pump cheap secondhand too (brand new in the box mind you! ). Lots of them go cheap(er) on Ebay as people buy them before they've had the baby, don't get on with bfeeding and don't need them.

I was a bit crazy about the bfeeding though, really committed even though it hurt like feck, and obsessed a lot(!). Bfeeding and the nappy thing was sheer stubborn control-freakery!

Really, I'm so much more calm now .

libbyssister · 09/04/2008 15:46

Hey TS, sitting in a cafe on a sunny day with MN sounds fab!

IlanaK · 09/04/2008 16:05

Hi everyone,

I notice a lot of talk about breastfeedig on here recently as well as pumping. I just want to give those who are interested a few facts that might help (I am a bf counsellor). Feel free to skip reading this if it is not relevant to you! Also, not trying to sound preachy.

Firstly, remember that every baby/mother breastfeeding relationship is different so what works for one mother/baby will not necessarily work for you. However there are some facts as well as research based evidence that might help you when thinking about the early days, pumping and bottles.

It can take 6-8 weeks to establish a good bf relationship when nothing is interfering with it. Therefore, it is not recommended to start pumping before about 6 weeks. A newborn baby is designed to feed extremlely frequently. If you try to fit in pumping sessions as well, you will literally spend all your time feeding or pumping. In the first 6-8 weeks your body is establishing the supply/demand equation and pumping can disrupt this. In addition, pumped milk is usually given by bottle. For many babies, even one bottle per day or two can interefere with with way they position and feed at the breast. Now I know there will be examples on here of mothers/babies where this did not happen. The problem is, you don't know ahead of time whether your baby will be one of those who can combine the two without problem. The majority of babies cannot.

For those that are discussing types of pumps - my advice would be wait and don't buy one now. See how youa re feeling after breastfeeding is established before you decide. In addition to this, pumping is learned skill. Some women find it easy and some do not - regardless of the pump type. A mother can have enough milk to feed triplets and still not be able to express a drop. The two are totally unrelated. Hand expressing is free and just as (and some say more) effective. Any breastfeeding counsellor can talk you through the process.

The important thing to do in those early weeks is relax into feeding your baby. Don't worry about bottles, pumps, sterilising etc. Put your baby to the breast whenever he/she wasnts (very very frequently usually) and so long as she/he is positioned well, every thing else will follow. Positioning is key and getting good support from a breastfeeding counsellor or supporter is the way to go.

Now back to our regular programming

miamla · 09/04/2008 17:15

thanks IlanaK, lots of advice there. I just know that i'm going to be fishing around on all the threads looking for that post in a few months time!

has anyone started leaking already? DP managed to (accidentally) squirt himself in his ear the other morning. I thought it was hilarious...he found it less funny!

miamla · 09/04/2008 17:15

oops missed out "good" in front of advice!

VintageGardenia · 09/04/2008 17:17

Hi girls.

Ilana, I was reading through the breast, bottle, pump discussions and thinking ooh we should be asking Ilana, and lo and b. there you are with a nice long post right at the end! Thank you. I'm glad you posted because looks like I was wrong in my planning - I had planned to express from about 3 weeks for an expressed bottle feed once a day. You say don't express till 6 weeks, earliest.

I fed DS for 11 months (though by 8 or 9 months it was really only once a day). I have to say the first week was pretty sore, a real challenge and a worry, but after that it was a dream, very convenient. We mixed feeding from about 4 months as far as I remember (ie some bottle feeds every day). I loved the feeding and I'd love to do it again. But Ilana - if I last breastfed 8 years ago will establishing it be as if from scratch? I am presuming it will, of course.

Can I second the approval of discussion of breast and bottle without snide remarks and one-upmanship and defensiveness and all the rest, so much easier to discuss in a free and tolerant environment.

TS sorry you're blue today. Send hugs and xxx.

Could someone post a link to Real Nappy site, or similar info site? Don't know anything about this.

Back in a bit.

Forgot to say can I have a HUGE round of applause for my lovely DH who gave me a big bar of Galaxy last night (and didn't want any himself it having been 'cake day' at work.) So I open the wrapper and there's a little card inside for his Babies (that's what he calls me when I'm pg) saying how much he loves me and the new one. Needless to say I bawled my eyes out and am welling up even now. Anyone else?

Phew, have caught up (only on today mind you!) Nice to have a chance to actually sit down in peace and quiet and read through posts, usually I quickly post and run as DS is tugging at me! He fell asleep at 6.45 tonight (same as last night, but he woke again about 9pm until 12 ish), I am hoping tonight he just sleeps through. He is the worst pattern at the moment, I definatly took it for granted when he was an angel to put to bed!

ALBS - I hope you are enjoying tonight. I was PMSL @ you hiding from the front door, I do that alot (except when a week or so post birth mums friend knocked on her front door and I was trying to get some sleep in the living room - on the sofa that you can see through the window next to the front door. 3 hours DS napped in his swing, and she stayed until he woke. I have never forgotten those 3 hours I was robbed of sleep God bless the odd layout of this house, I can hide better!

Pinchypants - I hope your over your cold, I can't imagine anything worse while pregnant - it must have been so draining. Even the though of it makes me feel exhausted! Hope everything is ok with you and your DH aswell, good you have planned to put aside time each week just to talk - DH and I need to do that, but then sometimes we end up just looking at eachother not knowing what to say! {{hugs}}

TS - Hope your feeling ok & the sunshine helped lift your mood. I usually feel better in the warmer weather. & Hope your DD got on ok at the doctors.

Buckets - I didn't realise you were a real nappy person (whatever you call them ) Great you give your time to helping others use them - I planned to this time but TBH now DS is a toddler and more of a handful it's the last thing on my mind. The though of breastfeeding again (which was fine 1st time but scary when you can't sit and feed all day) brings tears to my eyes! DS fed soooo much, every time we went out I would have to make sure he was full to the brim so we would get about 2 hours to rush round and do what we needed to do. I am dreading it TBH this time with a toddler wanting things and you just can't get up and get them or then the baby will cry. Eeeek! Maybe a sling will help, or I guess I can sit on the floor and BF and play with DS... one day at a time I suppose! Me waffling again, good luck tomorrow with the reporter .

Miamla - funny you should mention leaking, I was just thinking today I still haven't (I thought I had a few weeks ago but must have just flicked water on myself). 1st time I leaked about 14 weeks, 2nd about 16 and I am nearly 23 and nothing. I wonder if that's normal. I really hope I don't have any problems. As for breastpumps, I found the normal avent (Isis?) one great. It was a total godsend the first week. I didn't actually think i'd need it, I just bought it as one of those baby things you buy but DS didn't latch on for a week so was mainly fed from the bottle. I got a big machine one later on but it just didn't work for me, although by that stage I couldn't even express using the avent one. Not sure if my nipples had got abit flexible or supply had gone down. That was about 11 months when DS started biting and cutting my nipples, so I tried to go back to expressing but I got literally nothing out. I think they work best in the early days when all you have to do is look at your baby and milk comes flying out! I used to sleep naked (stiches below and BFing so just didn't bother with nightdresses!) and when I would change DS first thing in the morning I would always end up squirting him with milk. Oh, the joys of motherhood!

Oooh, and yay for Buckets DH and the galaxy bar! Made me really want one, but I have already asked for ice cream and I am watching my junk intake because of this diabetes possibility, but then I just want one even more! & such a sweet little note I used to write DH notes but my mum is soooooooo nosey I don't really anymore, because I will forget and leave one in the kitchen, or on the table and if she is over she reads everything she possibly can when my back is turned! Or just leans towards things and peers. Also means I cannot leave notes on the fridge reminding DH to pay bills as she will get on at me about that! Argh, stress levels rising....breathe...

LadyOfWaffle · 09/04/2008 20:24

Yikes, why couldn't I write essays at school??

okay....2 seconds while DD pitches another fit AND I TRY TO INGORE....

Just got home. Totally long day. DD gets to take Prevacid for a little while to help ease her stomach. Doc said what she dealt with (caused by antibiotics) was really really bad and will take some time especially the way little ones eat. She's got the big D at the moment YEAH FOR ME. Hopefully that will subside by morning. As for her cough....she just needs to take her allergy meds (duh for me...just not fond of any meds lately) and it will go away. So I sorta feel better, about that at least.

Shopped. Found four tops and two skirts (skirt/short things really). All were totally cheap and will work after baby (except for one skirt..unless I remain quite round). DD even scored a dress from GapKids. I shouldn't have bought it but oh well...crazy pregnant lady syndrome.

Time's up. Will post more after everyone's in bed.

CaptainCaveman · 09/04/2008 21:04

So, party at mine sounds fine, on the lawn with pimms in hand. Will you kill me if I don't put cucumber in the Pimms? (because my MIL would!!). Only snag is we haven't bought that house yet, have made an offer but still have to sell ours. So we may not be in there by Aug......

ALBS - I've still got the pain in my side (my left) of my abdomen. I'm fairly certain its trapped wind but it HURTS, hurts when I move etc. Ho hum.

Gotta fly coz the Apprentice has already started and I have a nice cold beer chilling in the fridge calling to me......

Just dipping in before I go to bed (old pregnant lady syndrome)
LoW Re b/f with a toddler around. It is possible - I'm proof! dd never took a bottle so I b/f'd her for 13 1/2 months (although I was never a hoik your norks out whenever person - she did have a routine!) Ds was 19 months so he got introduced to Cbeebies at that point.... It is hard in the early days but she got fast quickly and it was 10 mins and she was done after a few months. Anyway I will stop going on about b/f now - back to normal programming as Ilana says....

OK, tv watching done, just popping in on my way to bed!

Re. sleeping - ds was crap. First slept through the night at 14 months old and that was just a one off. Think he has just about got the hang of it now (3.11) and sleeps 10 hours max. So far we have had 9 consequetive nights without him waking up and coming into our bed!!

When i went back to work last time (ds was 7 mo) he was still being bf morning and evening but WOULD NOT take a bottle during the day. The most nursery ever got him to drink was one ounce!! Consequently, he was up 4 or 5 times per night bfing. Hmmm. Took me til he was 10.5 mo to cotton on to it and eventually stopped bfing all together. He started to drink formula straight away. Sleeping was still crap though! I figure that this time it could be worse but not by an enormous margin (I will be praying extra hard).

Night night girls x
