Pleased to be able to start the new thread with our birth announcement!

Samuel arrived at 1923 on thursday 20th March, weighing in at 4lb 10oz! After a fraught day of trying to find a hospital with a NNU with a cot (our hospital NNU was closed just as we were about to go to theatre), we finally ended up at Epsom General!

Sam is still in NNU but should be coming off his last little bit of oxygen this evening, is off CPAP, and having a go at bf'ing whenever he can (he's being fed by a tube).

I'm home and feeling a whole lot better than I did last time around, although very sore - TAKE THE PAINKILLERS THEY OFFER!!!!!

Jacob not sure about the new arrival although is smitten with his new scooter

will catch up with posts later but thanks for all your thoughts, prayers and good wishes over the last few days

Gosh, its hard putting all in bold! No news here, later today I should get my homebirth bag delivered, and get to chat through our birthplan. DH and I 'discussed' it last night. I wrote a few bits down, and he couldn't think of anything to add. We wrote so much last time, most of it completely irrelevant as helpful midwives, so this time its hard to think of anything we want that might need asking for!
Have a good day all

mum2scrap agree with whoever said it about 4/5 engaged, it can be taken either way apparently but I 'm guessing if you are 32 weeks it's more likely what we would think of 1/5 engaged.

indigoblue and kanga ! Can't believe you both know my boys name!!! Ok, it's not that big a deal, serves me right for mentioning the meaning hey . Thanks for keeping schtum!!

casserole hope you are feeling better with your cold....nothing worse than being ill and pregnant.

Yes, drinking more will help your braxton hicks. I read somewhere that being dehydrated makes them worse.

Had my leaving do last night, Pizza Express. Yummy!! Even managed 3 course (ok, so main was a salad).

Feeling v tired. Think I have over-done things a bit this week, been v busy. Gonna have a nap in a bit when DD goes down for hers.

OMG, heard a story yesterday about a girl I vaguely know who had her baby in car on way to hospital. Second baby. Apparently she kept ringing hosp and they kept putting her off going in (as they do) and she got in car to go to hosp and didn't even have time to get back in the house, her DH had to deliver the baby in the car outside their house!!!!!!!! And I think the baby was a couple of weeks early too.

There was a great thread last week where someone had asked if second babies were easier to deliver and EVERY single person who had posted had said YES...which was very reassuring for me, and anyone else on their 2nd.

Right, better go and hang the washing out.

Will catch up later.

GCG I think the biggest issue with second babies that makes it seem easier is the fact that you know what is likely to happen. And knowledge can remove so much of the fear which in turn can make the experience better even if it might not be a straightforward birth.
I think a lot of negative first birth experiences come from the lack of just knowing whats going on or what to expect.

Momcat & Pinacolada Not a vet but 10 years experience in the breeding and exhibiting of pedigree cats - when it comes to breeding vets don't always know it all because they only get to see something when it goes wrong IYSWIM . Animals don't go for antenatal and only get seen by a vet if there is a problem.

awwwpinacolada big hugs coming your way. I'm also a sufferer of depression, and i came off my cipralex about 6 week ago hoping the baby wont have withdrawal symptoms when he/she is born, but i am not coping very well at all.
If your measuring big then that is going to account for the hearburn or reflux, but like you say it does all soud a bit excessive.
I had reflux last night, its not nice to regurgitate food is it yuck!

Can you tell me what a registrar is and does? - i ask because when i went into hospital last week ( went on monitor and had scan and internal and blood taken), they said just get your notes and you can go, then came back in and said registrar wants you to go back on monitor for longer before we let you go.

Some of them seem only bothered that your not at any big risk right there and then. I measured smaller on one of my checks, i think it can depend on other factors, if your bladders full, if your bowel is full, if your tummys full, or even how the baby is lying, but i can see some inconsistacy in mine too yet no one mentions it.
I was told at the hospital last week to be rescanned in 2 weeks because they want to keep an eye on babies growth as below par, yet when i was actually having the scan i asked sonographer is my baby too small and she said no i just done your measurments and its fine, and anyway your not a big person are you ? so never sure who to believe about what now.

Try not to worry and if your not happy ring go back and tell them. TC

I have aquanatal this afternoon, something nice to look forward to and get my monies worth out of the swim costume i had to buy lol.
please dont feel on your own pinocalada cause your not, i for one will happily sit and listen to you even if im not much help cause i know how important it is not to feel alone, and depression can really make you feel so isolated.

Pinacolada! I am so sorry that the hospital were useless and no help at all. Speak to your midwife again.

Report
mumofk · 27/03/2008 12:15

Pinacolada- grrr, and just when you were trying to chill out! Right, what you could do ( if you are feeling up to it) is ring the antenatal clinic and state you want to talk to someone in charge about making a complaint. It depends how you are, but personally I find it easier to start off over the phone. They should get someone right away, or make promises they have to keep about someone phoning you back. Write down what you are told, so you can put it all in a letter if you feel like it later. Hospitals do everything they can to reduce the number of written complaints they get, so should take steps at the first instance, as well as making sure you are getting the best care. Talking ot your midwife might make you feel better, but your midwife isn't responsible or even necc.experienced of the clinic situation, so speaking to clinic staff (I'd expect it to be a midwife if its anything like the clinic I worked in) should be more helpful. They should be able to look you up on the computer, and depending if they've rung you back, look at your hospital notes as well.
I would do this today as leaving it can make it harder for you- and them- to remember specifics and you need to feel you're being looked after properly. The urine test results need explaining to you, and hopefully someone said in the end that your baby is growing fine- I second what someone else said about bubs position making a difference, but the best measure of baby is having the smae person doing the measuring all the time as everyone can get slightly different measurements ( IIRC my midwife hasn't used a tape measure on me yet, just prods and says that's right and writes = dates on notes. because I've got faith in them, it doesn't worry me).
YOU HAVE TO TALK TO SOMEONE TODAY though- you don't need to be in this state and someone CAN help. Talking to your midwife can help with some of the issues, so I'd certainly do that if you don't want to talk to clinic ( you'd need to start off being a little assertive, which I know I can't do unless i'm ready- but midwives are fab when you end up in tears on the phone, etc).
Grrr- I get so cross when drs don't listen and they are in a position to help, not make things worse. Hmm, this is why I don't want to go see one! If you agree and go back to see the dr again, will you have someone to be assertive with you? Someone to interrupt when they try to walk off and say look, she has a list of issues to discuss with you- you might be done but pinacolada isn't!!
babylove-a registrar is a more senior dr, but who hasn't done/ completed their consultant exams, or hasn't found a consultant post yet. They are much more experienced, and working in the area they've chosen to specialise in, so tend to know what they are doing compared to junior drs (these are senior house officers, or SHOs. our trust doesn't have any less junior staff in obstestrics, just student drs who only observe, and occasionally catch babies, like my DD (under very close supervision!)!
Right, midwife is coming over after clinic which could be anytime now, so when I know whats in the pack I'll let you know.
I've been out freecycling this morning, someone has given us enough laminate flooring to do baby's room- yippee (well,as long as we don't make ANY mistakes) and its really posh stuff, from an office. I love freecycle!

mumofk · 27/03/2008 12:22

It doesn't help pinacolada, but I'm remembering a friend who had awful sciatica and heartburn- nothing ( not even my best friend ranitidine) helped, and she was extremely sleep deprived. She had depressive problems before, and borderline anorexic ( I couldn't believe she managed to get pg, but thats another story) but no official diagnosis or treatment. Obs clinic didn't help her, basically said tough and didn't give her anything exept tell her she could take paracetamol and it'll go when baby lands- ie. no help. She got referred to psych clinic, and they were great- told her what she could take- other over the counter antacids, mild sleeping tabs, different pain relief- nothing dramatic- and voila, she could sleep and the depression went-it hadn't been proper scary depression but purely due to all the stuff she had to suffer. Fix the other problems- let her sleep, and she was loads better.
So, in a long round about way, if you can get help for your symptoms, maybe your depression won't actually be that bad, and hopefully you won't feel so bad about being pg(though I haven't got all the other stuff going on and I really wish I could unstrap this bump/ just hadn't got pg/had enough some days!).
Big hugs *

pinacolada82 - I'm sorry you had such an upsetting time with the docs. Mumofk's advice is excellent and I hope you will make contact with the hosp again. I know that in my local hosp you can walk straight into the pregnancy wards after 24 weeks and discuss any worries. Do you have similar access? You mention that you are starting to resent the baby a little - you have made a big sacrifice by coming off your ADs and that's an act of love for your baby and his/her well-being; it's perfectly understandable that you might start to think negatively when you have been feeling so unwell physically. We are humans not superheroes! I had post-natal dep and I am not relishing feeling that way again; this pregnancy has brought f**king horrible anxiety with it and I can't wait to have the baby so that my anxiety goes (not even going to consider the poss of it not going). I hope (and I'm a prayer too) that you will get your pregnancy issues answered and stop beating yourself up about your feelings. Take care. Lots of hugs. Mocat.

babylove21 - Phew, glad to hear you know your cats! Mine is called Mo, which gives a little insight into my name here!

Just ordered mattress for moses basket and ironed the sheets for the same. Nothing else done that is practically useful!!

GCG - okay, enough of the scary birthing stories. Mental note made not to be put off by hosp if I think I need to go in!

Oh pinacolada - what a git not to listen to you. Am surprised that he was so dismissive of your high BP too. If you are still feeling upset - which I totally would be - then how about giving your GP a call? they should have a midwife/someone who could clarify the height of your fundus for you and could always get in contact with consultant to say they are concerned. That would take emphasis off you too.

and i thought i have the worst consultant of all...first time when i visited the consulant i was first seen by a senior dr. who kind of acted like the consulants assistant e.g. bloodpressure, heartbeat, measuring tummy, urine sample etc.
after he finished all those the consulant walked in (as if he is royalty or something) introduced himself and was gone within a minute. just a quick "how do feel" why are you reffered?" and then " ok dr.*** will do the rest.

lol.. i was so upset as i took half a day of work for such an appointment. well that was at 24weeks.
but have to go and see that arse..oops next weeks once more.
