Sheds75 · 18/03/2008 12:36

afternoon all and congrats to all those finishing work for ML...... I have felt sooooo much better without being at work

feeling v.pleased with myself today, hve been cooking all morning to fill the freezer. With less than 2 weeks till EDD am now getting very exchited and scared

need to shop now, will catch up this afternoon

ToastAddict · 18/03/2008 12:50

OK, can I ask a really dumb question?
When the baby is born, do you have the option to have it cleaned up a little before it is given to you? I dare say I will change my mind in the heat of it all, and want to be given the option at the time, but right now, I would rather have the baby not covered in blood and gore

Please don't judge me - I just have a bit of a thing about this and worry that I won't bond with her if I find her a bit "eughhh". Sorry, very to ask this....

moominsmummy · 18/03/2008 12:54

TA - not silly at all but they are usually just wet not totally covered in gore - MW tends to wipe face anyway to stop them inhaling any goo so is not too bad

obviously they will clean them up a bit before handover if you like - just let them know

Sheds - lots of spare room in my freezer if you have overdone the mass cooking

sagitta · 18/03/2008 12:59

TA, I am sure you can. I didn't get DD until she was clean. Also it took a while to get her to breathe, so they sort of cleaned her a bit in that process i think.

I feel I should also admit, for any first timers who may feel the same, that I was very unconfident about BF - I didn't want to at all. (I did, and found it easy) And - I know this is weird - but I didn't want to do the skin-to-skin thing either. I don't know why. I just didn't.

Severe vomiting after the birth, then the stitches and stuff did mean I couldn't hold her properly for a while - which I was secretly relieved about. I didn't want to hold her really for a few hours. . I feel awful about admitting this, but then again, if anyone feels the same way then maybe they will feel less ashamed than I did /do if they know someone else felt the same way, iykwim.

moominsmummy · 18/03/2008 13:04

sagitta - very true
I was so glad the whole birth thing was over that for the first 30 mins I honestly couldn't have given a hoot about the baby at all

having spent weeks crying at every birth on discovery health I was surprised i didn't cry at DS's birth. fortunately DH cuddled him loads and once i had recovered a bit I had a cuddle and then WHOOSH! big lots of love. I was lucky that my mum warned me about not feeling instant love so i was fairly relaxed about it

sagitta · 18/03/2008 13:11

To be totally honest, I didn't feel anything really at all until one week after she was born. And I really don't think that that, of the skin-to-skin thing has affected my bond with her now. She's adorable (mostly)

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 18/03/2008 13:12

Well I've just got back from a 'Bumps, Babies and Bees' group that I thought I would join to make some preggie friends. Not a preggie woman in sight - just lots of crying babies and screaming toddlers! I hightailed it out of there... might go back when I have a baby to take with me! I really want to make some preggie mates in my area so now need to find out about other groups.

Ohh TA - I am so glad you asked that question - not sure I am keen on goo either! Even if it is my own!

sagitta · 18/03/2008 13:12

sorry - or the skin-to-skin

ToastAddict · 18/03/2008 13:13

Thanks, good to hear. I am really looking forward to meeting this baby but was starting to feel like a bit of a freak at not wanting the baby on my chest straight away. As I said, I'll probably change my mind at the time, but just wanted to know if I could have the choice

Thanks x

moominsmummy · 18/03/2008 13:24

M2b2br - sorry the meeting didn't work out - there's got to be some preggie ladies near you! whereabouts are you? can your MW put you in touch with others?

Peachy · 18/03/2008 13:28

The cleaned up thing- I am sure I have seen it on a birth plan before? Just pop it on there and nobody will mind a bit.

The HB heating thing- was in the homebirth book rather than via MW but is for baby, not Mum- and DS3 got cold in mid july and had to be grilled', so if its this cold when I deliver can certainly see the logic (was 2 degrees here this AM).

Bump very achey today so not done much, but did manage to fill in a DLA form- took 4 hours and that was with having done them before- bloody things! Anyone who says DLA easy to get hold of lives on planet cuckoo land, that'll be the last I see of it now as wella s they'll spend six months checking every single word, even thopugh its a renewal.

School opena fternoon now,a nd then thats it- have had a few epsodes over alst frew days where I have felt suddenly tired and feet ahve ballooned, so DH and I taking that as a sign to rest- he even cooked yesterday LOL!

moominsmummy · 18/03/2008 13:31

ooo peachy - DLA forms are a nightmare aren't they? I have a link to a very helpful guide which tells you how to fill them in - when we did it they reviewed DH's DLA from low care and no mobility to being middle care and high mobility - and made it indefinite award - We were more pleased with never having to fill in the poxy form again than anything else!

put your feet up and have a cuppa

moominsmummy · 18/03/2008 13:32

sorry peachy - meant to say let me know if you want the link

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 18/03/2008 13:34

Moominsmummy - I'm in Orpington and yes - seeing my MW today and will ask her.. although I'm not holding my breath cos the last time I asked her a question - about antenatal classes other than NCT or the over subscribed NHS, she didn't know!

Carey87 · 18/03/2008 13:38

Sagitta - Thank you so much for posting on the whole skin 2 skin & breastfeeding thing. Please dont anyone judge me, and I know that I will probably change once lo is out, but the thouht of skin 2 skin as soon as baby is born sends shvers down my spine and i honestly dont know why! Its the same with breastfeeding, and the only reason I'm giving that a go is because when I say I want to bottle feed averyone, and I mean everyone!, says that its bad and that its not natural and blah blah blah and they all make me feel so guilty. I'm sure it will be fine once lo is here but at the moment I feel as if I dont have a say in it and I just sit there nodding and agreeing when inside I want to scream!

Sorry, you'll all probably throw me out now, but this is the first time I've ever mentioned it

Carey87 · 18/03/2008 13:40

M2B2BR - I live in Orpington!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 18/03/2008 13:45

Oh good Carey! We must meet up! (No presure!) Do you know of any groups around here for pregnant woman? (Besides NCT!)

Carey87 · 18/03/2008 13:48

Me defo must meet up!! I dont I'm afraid. My MIL2B asked me about it the other day and no one has mentioned anything like that to me, and I havent seen any advertised anywhere.

I actually live in St Paul's Cray (but Oprington just sounds better )

velbels · 18/03/2008 13:48

YAY!! just got back from MW chat about homebirth plans with a birth kit Only negative thing was the whole "you do know that if the hospital is too busy there may not be enouth MWs for homebirth"

Getting excited (and scared) now!

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 18/03/2008 13:55

Well you go on maternity leave soon don't you Carey? Maybe we can meet up once you have some time?

I will let you know if I find out anything from the MW today.

Velbels - so what are you meant to do if there aren't enough MW's? Go to the hospital? Fingers crossed that there are enough!

Carey87 · 18/03/2008 14:02

I go on Mat leave on Thursday so maybe next week we could meet up at Costa in the nugent park place or in somewhere in Orpington for a cuppa?

Cx

SuzeM · 18/03/2008 14:11

ToastAddict, I was thinking the same but wasn't sure how to phrase it on my birth plan ... can I order a clean baby please!

sagitta · 18/03/2008 14:33

Hi carey - don't worry about feeling like that (although I'm sort of glad you do - it makes me feel less of a freak!). It will all come together eventually IME, just not necessarily in that minute you have given birth!

sagitta · 18/03/2008 14:34

I think Scorpio feels the same about BFing too, by the way. I probably only did it in the end because it's easier.
