firstly when do you start bleeding am worried I will start bleeding whilst my legs are numb and I wont beable to go to the toliet and put a towel in and the thought of asking for help is

They kind of pad you out with towels while you are in theatre and recovery. Sounds but once someone has seen your insides it doesn't seem to matter so much what they see of your outsides... I think I may have been given a bit of a bedbath at one point too but that's a bit hazy.

Secondly what do they make you wear when your in the theater I am a big girl and the thought of a little hospital gown is also my DH is a big block what if the clothes provided dont fit him what happens then!

I had to look at the photos to check, but I do appear to be wearing a hospital gown with a particularly fetching yellow trim (I look terrible in yellow... clearly that is why I also appear to have been run over by a truck in the photos and not anything to do with, say, having just had a baby ). DH is wearing theatre scrubs but appears to have one of his own T-shirts on underneath (not positive about that, but it doesn't look hospital-issue). You can get hospital gowns and scrubs in a whole range of sizes so I doubt there will be an issue. There's clearly a lot of extra room in what DH is wearing, and fundamentally a hospital gown just needs to cover your front (in the photos after the birth I've clearly been attacked by the blanket fairy as I'm covered in hospital blankets too, so modesty isn't really a concern.

Thirdly do they/I have to shave everything off down there - what to be prepared!

Mine was emergency so they shaved the top bit in theatre. You could do it yourself in advance if you want lotions and potions and so forth or let them do it for you.

Fourthly what happens after you have the baby you must go to recovery but what happens with DH and the baby do they come too?

Yes.

Lastly now honestly how much did it hurt - sorry for anyone else who may need a c section but I dont want to go into this with my eyes shut! could you hold the baby ok and what was the first feed like?

In general, not too much. The first feed was fine (that was lying down in bed, though) and subsequent feeds were OK too. It hurts when you try to sit up in bed or stand up, but if you're not doing anything it's fine not like a constant nagging pain. Picking up and holding the baby wasn't a problem it was getting out of bed in order to pick him up that was the part of the process that hurt, but you develop your own techniques for that. I suggest not catching whooping cough, though, as that wasn't very nice.

They do give you plenty of painkillers and I suggest just taking everything they offer you in hospital, even if it doesn't hurt at the time that should keep you more comfortable. But be aware that some of them are constipating, so get plenty of fibre in your diet. Once you get home you can start cutting back on the painkillers they send you with I think I was off them entirely within a week or so and still have some of the packet left three years later (having used them as my super-duper painkillers for bad pain of various unrelated sorts in the meantime).

HI Everyone, welcome to the newcomers, and congrats to Daftmoo! Good name, that is on our list...Let us know what happened when you can!

Carey - I was feeling like that all weekend - as if the baby was really low and coming out, and I felt tired and rubbish, But after a lot of LO moving about, it felt much better. Scared the shit out of me though.

For some, stupid, presumably pregnancy-brain related reason I decided it would be fun to take DD to ToysRUs yesterday. I have never had less fun (except when in labour!) I remember someone on here saying it was a great shop, but DD had tantrum after tantrum, I had to keep picking her up - and she can be so wriggly - I should think there's a thread somewhere on MN devoted to the 'terrible PG mother failing to control her toddler yesterday and swearing like a trooper."

DD has now added 'FFS' to her lexicon whenever she can't do something, like get a piece of jigsaw to fit. I am crap at this. Really shouldn't be allowed to have another.

Thanks for all kind words about DH being away - Scampmum - your DD does sound sweet!

But for first timers, I should add that I didn't fall in love with DD straight away, and I think lots of people don't, so I wouldn't worry if you don't.

bunnyrabbit · 17/03/2008 10:39

Oh my ladies, how many posts to catch up on??

Just skimmed:

  • welcome to all you new ladies.
  • congrats daftmoo
  • big hugs to all those whose DHs and DPs are away
  • cake all round to those feeling crap

Told DH, when he wanted to 'just sit down and chill for a while', in no uncertain terms that he is lucky that I have not been emotional, am still working full time and doing all the cooking, organising etc. and am the one ensuring that we get stuff done as I am have a baby in 2 1/2 weeks FFS!!

First time I've done this so he realised he was a lucky bugger and got off his ass.

Manic weekend though as people round Fri/Sat and Sun.. absolutely knackered.

Last week at work though Hurrah!!!

Finally starting to feel tired this weekend, and nobody has told my little one that he's not supposed to be moving much. Felt like he was going to escape last night. Does anyone else have a LO that wriggles all the time??

Oh and had about 6 hours sleep last night which is brilliant for me.... and only wnet loo twice

BR

Scampmum · 17/03/2008 10:44

Congrats, Daftmoo! I love Ted too but DH is Edward so could get confusing.

Welcome to all newbies, congratulations on your forthcoming LOs.

Sagitta - excellent point. I have recently had loads of friends who were really upset by the lack of an instant bond - it happens for some people but it definitely doesn't for all so PLEASE no-one feel bad or like a terrible mother if they are more dumbstruck and overwhelmed by the baby than suffused in an instant loving glow! I was so completely weirded out by that point that it was more bizarre than anything else. And I'm not ashamed to say it! Also found it very strange when we got home that there was someone else in our space, and I hadn't anticipated that at all - I wouldn't say I resented her but I definitely felt her presence in a more oppressive way than I expected.

Are any first-timers reading the childbirth thread? Very brave of the OP - don't know if I would have done that!!

This thread is moving SO quickly now - do you think there's a certain 'winding down' happening at work?

Oh, and how do people who are at home all day stop themselves from eating constantly? Was out yesterday and DH made a huge and amazing nut flapjack, have already eaten more than a quarter of it (it's about 9" in diameter - that's on top of a hearty breakfast).

sagitta · 17/03/2008 10:51

Mmm, flapjacks...my sis bought some over at the WE - still one or two left I was saving for DD...

not any more

bunnyrabbit · 17/03/2008 11:13

mmm flapjacks....

Carey87 · 17/03/2008 11:23

oooo!! I think i'll have to make some now when I'm off next week. I've got a real urge to tidy and clean and make things ready but I cant as I'm stuck at work, I just really hope this feeling lasts till next week

EllieG · 17/03/2008 11:24

LOL at sagitta's DD and her new words!

bunnyrabbit · 17/03/2008 11:31

s'funny, I have the urge to do thinks (construct DS's new bed and put up curtain rails) and to cook, but no nesting/cleaning instinct?

Is this because I'm just a lazy moo?

BR

PortAndLemon · 17/03/2008 11:34

I had a splurge of flatpacking at the end of last week but ... umm ... no, it's not because you're a lazy moo. Because if you are then so am I, and clearly that can't be right...

OP posts:
bunnyrabbit · 17/03/2008 11:36

Oh good.... thanks for the P&L

bunnyrabbit · 17/03/2008 11:39

thanks for 'that'

I have been entertaining all weekend and things are sort of tidy and cleanish.... I must be honest and own up to having a cleaner for 2 hours a week whilst I'm still working full time (I am out the house from 7 till 6.30) but this is only really time for a quick dust and hoover and to clean the bathrooms so still end up doing stuff... well I should anyway or the spiders take over!!!!

Do you have a flapjack recipe??

BR

Carey87 · 17/03/2008 11:42

i was just about to ask if anyone had a good (easy!!) flapjack recipe?

PortAndLemon · 17/03/2008 11:42

We still have cleaner, but house is a mess anyway. She just makes it a clean mess.

Carey87 · 17/03/2008 11:42

BR - good minds think alike!

bunnyrabbit · 17/03/2008 11:45

Hope DS is good next week when I'm off as I definitely need to bake some goodies and cook some freezer maels. Must keep everything crossed that little one stay in for another week.

I don't think I've ever made flapjacks before..

BR

bunnyrabbit · 17/03/2008 11:46

Carey, Are you really busy? Are you having a leaving lunch/drink/thing at all

Carey87 · 17/03/2008 11:48

I'm having a quick lunch on Thursday at the pub and thats about it really. My replacement started way too early so I'm just gettin paid to sit here and look fat

Annieroo · 17/03/2008 11:49

hello all,

haven't posted for a while, just been lurking in the background!

Congrats to those who have given birth already

Lots of chocolate to everyone not feeling brilliant

I finished work two weeks ago, just on Annual leave at the moment, maternity leave starts in April. have been taking it easy so far, but just had the urge to defrost the freezer and clean the kitchen - i'm hoping this is the 'nesting thing' as i'm now looking for rhubarb cake recipes! Trouble is i have to keep sitting down every half hour as my hips and my enormous bump can't take the strain!!

TheMaskedPoster · 17/03/2008 11:52

Oh wow !! LOADS of posts to look at - but just a quick CONGRATS to Daftmoo ... how lovely!!!!

I really only popped my nose into MN to see if anymore babies had arrived (on our thread) and so glad I did.

Hope all are well, and I do so hope I will be able to sit down one day soon and actually have a 'chat' on this thread instead of dashing in and out.

TMP x

northeastmummy · 17/03/2008 11:52

Ellie and Carey - this is my last week at work too!! Phew! Carey - i also have a real urge to tidy and organise and am REALLY hoping it sticks with me into next week.

I have a 5 day week - we don't do public holidays here. I'll happily join in with the cake on Thursday though .

Congratulations Daftmoo! Although i have to say, early babies are making me a little nervous right now. I need my time off!!

Carey87 · 17/03/2008 11:56

Do I have a rite to feel slighlty envious of my DP sister in law that is due on Thursday but is very likely to come anyday? I just feel sooooooo huge already and yes I know that she was always going to get to the finishing line before me but I've contantly got this envious feeling going on (also the fact that they chose the same nursery design as us, but put it up first, which meant we had to change, and the same with the furniture, and that she has the travel system but we just couldnt afford it )

Oh god Im going to hell I'm sure

northeastmummy · 17/03/2008 11:59

Yes Carey - it's normal! I felt like that first time round when my friend had her DD before me ... and then I felt envious of all my friends who were getting pg after I'd had DD. There's no logic to it ... must just be hormones.

One of my friends made me flapjacks with this recipe and they were yum scrum! I haven't tried it myself yet but it looks easy peasy.

VictorianSqualor · 17/03/2008 12:00

Arghh, eek, I'm getting nervous now, the tv dude has confirmed lunch tomorrow.
It'll be nice to meet with some other MNers and stuff but SHIT! What was I thinking?!?!

sagitta · 17/03/2008 12:02

Carey - perfectly normal. Last time my sis-in-law was due a three weeks after me, and she gave birth three weeks before me (twins, so early). I was very .
And now her two have every luxury known to toddler, and poor DD just has us!
