Am so slow and tired today I feel like this little guy

Evening all - I'm feeling somewhat better after my rant earlier today. Sorry! I had a bath, ignored the mortgage paperwork and cooked a posh but easy-peasy dinner for DH (can heartily recommend Rick Stein's Mediterranean cookbook for luscious food). I've had BH all evening when I've been stood up though. They seem to last much longer than 30 seconds (more like 60-90 seconds), but there's no pain, just a fair bit of discomfort. I'm off to bed now before this computer sends me into a ranting, quivering wreck again...

Purly - where are you having your baby? If I remember rightly at one point you were trying to get Queen Charlotte's where I am. Just wondered if that is where you are or if you've found another birth centre, as the birth centre at QC looks pretty fab too (they have disco glitter balls in the rooms!)

PurlyQueen · 03/03/2008 23:54

Hi HQ,

I'm having my baby at the Brent Birthing Centre which is at Central Middlesex Hospital in Park Royal.

Found it completely by accident. My GP wanted to book me in at Northwick Park which is miles away in Harrow. I ended up having my nuchal scan and blood test at Central Middlesex and found the birth centre there.

Sadly there's a big question mark over whether it will remain open as it is under-used but the health trust expect the midwives to publicise it rather than concentrating on their jobs of bringing babies into the world

SpaceHopperHayls · 04/03/2008 02:48

Hi all - feel like I have been away for weeks. Congrats to all of you who have done it, and good luck to those still waiting. Feel like I should share my birth story, but am also wary of frightening anyone being threatend with an induction...so if that applies to you, you've been warned.

Water broke at 11am on 19/02 - I wasn't sure if that's what it was, but two pairs of trousers later I was convinced. Went into hospital, and politely declined their kind offer of induction, so was sent home.

Fast forward to 11am on 20/02, and we were back at the hospital, np further along other than having soaked every towel we own, and every single one of my pairs of knickers. Had to be induced, which obviously meant labouring attached to monitors and a drip. (Became slightly worried about the whole business for the first timewhen I was asked, 'How allergic are you to penicillin?')

Hard labour took a whule to start, but by 5pm I was having a hefty contraction every two minutes or so. Decided that the heated pad had done a sterling job, but it was time to move on to gas and air. Not my best idea - it made me throw up Exorcist style all over myself/bloke/midwife, so I went back to my friend the wheatbag. (Bloke thought it highly amusing that one of the pain relief options was aromatherapy...)
After another 5 hours of hard, close together contractions, the midwife examined me and broke the news that I was...3cm dilated. At this point my resolve broke like a kit-kat and I asked for an epidural, after veing assured by the midwife that it would make no difference to the duration of labour because it was all being brought on my the Sytocin. At this stage Bloke helpfully asked if I was sure, and should he just get me some essential oils?
Winderful, amazing epidural was administered, and on we went. her heart rate started to fall whenever I pushed, which resulted in a room full of doctors threatening a c-section, arguing with two midwives who were convinced I could still push her out. C-section averted, but two docs still hovered ominously at the action end muttering about forceps, which was all the incentive I needed to push her out. Started pushing at 2.10am, and by 2.26am I had a cut, tear, poo, and a beautiful daughter.
She was put straight onto my bare chest, and started to feed alnost immediately. In an ideal world, I wouldn't have been induced, but it could have been a lot worse, and bot Ffion and I have been perfectly healthy since.
I can't believe that was almost two weeks ago. Have been typing this while feeding her - she is an absolute breast feeding star, just latches on and does the job with hardly any help from me.
See you all on the post natal thread.

fitnfortyone · 04/03/2008 04:47

SHH thanks for sharing the details - really hope i can avoid g&a as i think it'll give me the same reaction...reminds me of having gas as a child at the dentists, always threw up after that!

Been up for 2 hours or so now with contractions which stopped as soon as i went to fetch the laptop. This LO is going to be an awkward sod like his dad. Still, at least he won't share his birthday with Ronan Keating!

MarchNowFebMum · 04/03/2008 07:46

The sounds I made in labour were very cow like - I've seen a cow give birth and I recognized the sound! Hearing other people (as I did in the hopsital) sounded worse than it actually happening though.

As for throwing up on g and a, I did for the first 2 drags and then it never came back. They actually had to refill the pool!!

And speaking of crying, beware of the day 3 (or for me day 5) 'weird cries' post partum. Everything makes you cry - I was inconsolable that day but fine the next. Hmmm, hormones.

Am bfeeding and typing at the same time!!

merryberry · 04/03/2008 08:12

congratulations Hayls! that sounds PAINFULLY familiar from my induction with ds1! Especially the docs rattling the cutlery at the end of the bed, heh? That made me push ds1 out without a contraction!

i hope you are recovering well?

Marchmum, how's your brief window parenting alone going? I remember the first time i was left alone for a day with ds1...oh i clock watched until i could share it again!

got to get on with >stuff< (TM)
better than sitting around today.

HolidaysQueen · 04/03/2008 08:44

Congratulations Hayls! 16 mins pushing? That's amazing!

I'm finding everybody's birth stories so inspiring - whatever seems to happen, what always shines through is how bloodyminded you all are at wanting to do it your way. So even if doctors/midwives are getting a bit concerned or wanting to step in and do stuff you all just seem to have said "sod that" and done it how you felt best given the circumstances at the time. I so hope I'm that strong when it comes to my turn

Speaking of which, my due date buddy from my NCT group is in hospital because her waters broke yesterday. She's 3 weeks early so I'm now thinking that the yin-yang of life will decide that I need to be 2 weeks late to compensate...

HolidaysQueen · 04/03/2008 08:50

Hope everyone is doing well today by the way. I had a (relatively) good night's sleep last night and am meeting a very good friend for lunch, so I'm feeling much better than yesterday. I'm going to try and get this mortgage application finished and in the post while my good mood lasts

Purly - I've heard some good things about Brent birthing centre. I think if I hadn't got QC then I might have been investigating it - it's actually a bit closer to home for me. Such a shame that it's under threat. As you say, midwives are trained to deliver babies, not marketing campaigns

e14mum · 04/03/2008 09:26

It's a bit late- but I was also part of the sobbing club yesterday. I feel your pain mb, turtle and HQ. However, today is a new day, today is a new day! Haven't cried yet and am dealing with fridge-repair man quite calmly. Perhaps some pg tears will get me sympathy and no bill? Yeah right.
I'm meeting one of the girls from NCT for coffee later on, and will maybe even venture to the shops for last little nursery bits. Hmm... we'll see about that one.
Hope the tears have all subsided for now. We can bring them out later on of course!

fitnfortyone · 04/03/2008 09:33

sympathy to everyone whose hormones are all over the place, i've been in tears all morning
Going to see my kinesiologist/holistic person this morning so she can give junior a good talking to - we were both convinced he was going to put in an appearance early or by yesterday latest, so think i'm more upset by my intuition being crap than by only being 2 days overdue!

After that got the m/w appt for my 40+2 checkup where i need to be strong enough to resist any suggestions of intervention...

Inbetween times, i think i need some sleep!

turtle23 · 04/03/2008 10:49

Have just had another teary episode with my surgery as they sent off to make sure my d+v was just hormones a week ago and they STILL haven't got the results back. Can't go anywhere til they are back just in case and am so fed up. I don't feel ill. Just upset and bored. Do I ever stop whinging? Sorry.

PurlyQueen · 04/03/2008 11:07

That's good to hear, HQ

The baby is now 2/5 engaged so I may be there sooner rather than later

JFly · 04/03/2008 11:11

Poor turtle. That is so frustrating. I really hope your sickness passes soon. Or at the very least turns into labour! But not before Sunday (isn't that right?).

I'm so fed up of this waiting. I've had to sit around the house for two days thinking the builder is coming to finish the nursery, and he didn't show up yesterday and still isn't here today. Plus the microwave repair guy is coming (for the fourth time) between 2-5 so I have to sit around for him, too. Just love not being able to leave the house all day! I'm going stir crazy. Grrrrr!

Another NCT friend had her baby this am - she was due on the 12th. I'm destined to be the last one, I think!

HolidaysQueen · 04/03/2008 11:23

For anyone looking for Earth Mama products, I've just found that you can get them from Amazon. Type in Earth Mama in the search box and you'll get to them.

Jaysthird · 04/03/2008 11:41

Still here, still with child still fed up...now 7 days over, seeing consultant tomorrow...i fear iduction looms....i have had 2 acupuncture sessions with another booked for tonight, but all activity has ceased, no real BH no cramps a lot less movement ( still the 10) but none in the day, all seem to come at night....its all very frustrating

Anyway........Congratulations Hayls! sounds a bit traumatic at times but you got there in the end, with your lovely baby, well done you!

My mums partners niece (d'get that!!) was due yesterday, and gave birth yesterday. First baby, went into labor yesterday morning, baby born yesterday afternoon....8lb 12.....i am not i am not - no really i am not!!

Jfly - builders, dont get me started!!! hope they turn up and get cracking!

Purly i have been 3/5 engaged for the past four weeks, i too thought it might have happened earlier rather than later...sorry if thats not good news for you - saying that you will prob have your baby before me!

Turtle, chin up chicken, its ok to cry whinge moan and despair.. i mean look at me!!!

PurlyQueen · 04/03/2008 11:44

I've just placed my order for the postpartum delivery kit - there are only 5 left in stock!

PurlyQueen · 04/03/2008 11:45

No - that's good news jaysthird

I'm not ready for labour!!

derah · 04/03/2008 12:01

Ah yes, threats of slicing and vontusing got me to push DD1 out in the end too, with the docs 'rattling the cutlery' (that's such a cool phrase!!) at me. Bullies! One of many reasons why I stayed home this time.

Well, milk came in last night, boobs are large and overinflated, but LO seems to prefer the new improved milk and has been feeding like a champion. She'll be twice the size in a matter of days if this keeps up!!

Sending happy going-into-labour vibes to all of you!!

MumOfBillyTheKid · 04/03/2008 12:03

Hi all

THanks Hayls for sharing your birth story - like HQ, I'm inspired by reading them as get posted!

Thanks HQ for the Earth Mama pointer - just ordered the bottom spray and bath stuff.

Sending patience vibes for those waiting (for babies, builders, repair men etc.) and get well vibes for those feeling poorly.

Off to get measured for nursing bra and to do lunch... possibly cake too! My SIL told me at the w'end I'm waddling now - so, I shall waddle round Poole shops like a duck

turtle23 · 04/03/2008 12:21

Jfly- Oh no...this baby is welcome NOW. Hopefully the fact that you had Sunday in your head means that that confusion in the universe was what stopped my BH and slowed it all down. No, he is welcome sooner rather than later.
DO YOU HEAR THAT PASCAL? YOU CAN COME NOW!!

OP posts:
PurlyQueen · 04/03/2008 12:23

I had a bra fitting at Bravissimo yesterday. I'm still in shock over the size of my nursing bra...

turtle23 · 04/03/2008 12:29

Jaysthird-Sending you all kinds of labour-inducing vibes. Think positively, induction WILL NOT BE NECESSARY.

OP posts:
JFly · 04/03/2008 12:47

Jay, I think you win the fed up stakes. Well, with MB hot on your heels for first place!

Turtle, so was it this last Sunday your goal for getting the OK for home birth? Or was that you? I get confused easily! Pascal - really? I call mine Ebenezer. Has a nice ring to it, although may not suit a girl.

For those of the big boob, I heartily (again) recommend the Anita underwire nursing bra. It's a good fit (I'm measuring 34-36 G/GG) at 36H (cups run a size small) and comes in white and black. Least hideous and most comfortable one I've tried.

merryberry · 04/03/2008 12:49

spit it out purlyqueen, go on what cup size?
