'ere we go, guys!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
sarahmikeandharry · 06/02/2008 15:50

You put that so well OMY- made more sence than my ramblings anyway!!!

Pk616 · 06/02/2008 15:52

sarah (and Sherida)- You need to look at the NICE gudelines for induction of labour!
You should only be continuously monitored initially until 'normal' contractions start (If induced using prostoglandin vaginal tablets) if induced using oxytocin (which hospital should only use as a last resort) then yes you will be continuously monitored throughout because of higher risks involved.

Yes there are higher insidences of further interventions due to the fact that your body hasn't started the process in addition to the fact that the mother is usually less relaxed and way more tired than with a natural birth due to the exceedingly long hours involved in a horrid clinical hospital to get the whole process going

These factors do not mean, however, that inductions always go badly or take yonks or hurt more, because, as Sarah said, every womans body is different and reacts in different ways.

Pk616 · 06/02/2008 15:56

soz omy, crossed post

I think we're all agreeing anyway just with different ways of looking at it!

Yep, when I met the woman last wed night I wished that I'd met her a good 30 weeks previously so I could have had the care and recieved all the information that I was supposed to get. She also had a good sense of humour. no wonder she got the top job!

sarahmikeandharry · 06/02/2008 16:09

PK- i have been told as i have raised bp and a hih BMI will be strapped down from the off-!!! just to please me!!!lol but thanks for the info

Pk616 · 06/02/2008 16:24

Sarah - you could always just take the wires off you and move about when you've had enough!

Pk616 · 06/02/2008 16:34

Ooh I've just found an interesting one... apparently Holst the planets (especially Mars) is supposed to be such an intense piece of music that it is not recommended for listening to during pregnancy for risk of inducing labour!
Probably cobblers but it's gotta be worth a try!

pobletsmum · 06/02/2008 16:41

Oh my goodness Sarah - what appalling treatment! Please write down all that you posted, plus the names of the doctor and also the midwife who witnessed some of the appt. That way you have all that you need to put in a formal complaint, if not now, then after the baby is born, if you feel the need. Will you have to see him again? I would absolutely insist that you don't. All this stress and upset is NOT good for you or the baby. For what it's worth, my BP is 120/80 and nobody is batting an eyelid. It is actually much higher than my booking BP, which was low at something like 100/60 (wild guess). I am still going 2 weeks between appts so 120/80 can't be that bad! My bmi is slightly high (overweight range), so I don't know if that makes any difference. I'll be interested to see what Slacker has to say about all this...

Amy78 · 06/02/2008 17:00

Sarah - try not to worry about it. Stand your ground and remind them that it is YOUR labour. Unless there is a serious risk to either your health or the baby's then there is no reason for interventions. At my last MW and consultant appointments my BP was 140/98 and they seem to have no concerns about that (and I had a book in BMI of 39)

MERLYPUSS · 06/02/2008 17:26

Just a quickie.
I have hatched. Thomas William 6lb 14 oz born 31/01/08 at 15.53hs and Isaac Jamie 5lb 4oz born 31/01/08 at 15.55hs.
Had emergency c-sect as developed pre-eclapsia and had to stay in high dependency for a day as lost 2ltrs blood. Also Isaac went to ncu as not breathing but we are all home now, combination feeding (milk not in yet) and are all getting to know each other with lots of cuddles.
can someone send a brief update of news to [email protected]. Will return.
Remember. Sleep is for the weak.

widgetsmummy · 06/02/2008 17:36

Congrats Merly! - glad you are all home safe and sound.

Sarah - I am so shocked but thank god for the mw and that your dh was there. what a condescending git the consultant was. I know you're frazzled right now but complaining would be a good thing to do - he needs to go! I would also refuse to be seen by him again. take care, I hope things kick off naturally for you really soon.

rozzyraspberry · 06/02/2008 17:59

Congratulations Merly - fantastic news - by my reckoning that's all the twins hatched now - Ladle, Egg, Mini, ExpectingKat and merly - so glad they all arrived safely!!

Morninglory - as egg says I'm sure that Alexander is fine - I think babies must be able to go with little food for the first few days anyway as they're just getting colostrum rather than milk. Only thing I would say is that ds2 was like this and we were told when he was 2 days old that he had jaundice and that was what was making him so sleepy. I was told not to let him go for more than 4 hours without feeds as plenty of fluids help get rid of the jaundice. However, I'm sure that would have been picked up by now and you just have a dream baby.

Sarah - my bp has been 100/60 throughout my pregnancy. However, ordinarily I'm around 120/80 and I don't think 120/90 is that high. LOL he was proved wrong about lo being breech - what an idiot! Make sure you take plenty of fluids if you're awaiting the start of the runs - the last thing you want is to be dehydrated if you go into labour.

It was a lovely day here today so decided to walk up to nursery with boys instead of taking the car. It was great to get some fresh air but pretty exhausted now. DH just gone to work so better go and get boys organised for bath/bed.

Take care everyone

cosima · 06/02/2008 18:10

OK finally feel up to getting back on the internet - birth story coming up!

Woke up at 3am last Wed night waters had started to go but very slowly. Woke DH up at 5 when I had lost a lot more and started getting contractions, rang the hospital who said to go in and get checked over. On our way to the hospital (15 min journey) I had 5 contractions. Got wired up to the monitor in hospital and was having contractions every 2 mins lasting 30 seconds a go, 2 cm dilated by then. Really was not expecting them to be coming that thick and fast so soon! Ended up in the bath at the hospital for a couple of hours but pain getting too bad so was given meptid - which did nothing. Still just 2 cms so got sent to maternity ward for a few hours - got on tens machine which really helped. Got to 5 cms and sent back to delivery suite contractions coming every minute and I was in a lot of pain so DH talked me into an epidural. Epidural was fab and took pain away completely. After about 4 hours contractions had stopped so they put me on an oxytocin drip wasn't doing much though and after an hour babys heart rate had started dropping to 80 then back up to 200, v v scary. Had fetal scalp blood taken which was horrible then they decided the baby was too distressed and I had to go for a section right away. Whole labour took 17 1/2 hours altogether. Section wasn't too bad at the time I just wanted the baby to be OK and cried immediately when he cried!

Stayed in for a few days and came home on Sunday. Still in a lot of pain but Daniel is gorgeous (have added some pics) and I am very happy.

Will have to catch up on all the news now.

princessllama · 06/02/2008 21:11

wow so many hatchlings. congratulations to all the new mums.
pk your mil is hardcore. mine doesn't come into same category but does have some bad moments. took advice from a pyschologist during 1st pg when she was big p in the bum. she said deal with it now up front, face to face in as calm way as poss and when dh not around. it was hard and i almost wet myself with fear but has been sooooo much better since then, even dh thinks so. she knows the boundaries now and doesn't take the p*ss as often.eg, she now asks when could she come and stay rather than tells us that she's coming and get sulky mad furious when told she can't. mils are like children and dogs in my opinion-firm hand at all times with clear boundaries and reward system
sarah that man is a tosspot. def needs an official complaint by someone otherwise he can just keep getting away with it. the hospital staff sound like they're gagging for a reason to get rid of him.
i was induced last time with gel over 2 days. only started the lying down monitoring when had epidural, then was able to stand up for pushing stage. still, never ever want to have to be induced again due to horribleness of pain. i will def be trying caster oil if it comes to it!
morningglory hope alexander is doing ok. they should be weighing him soon shouldn't they? if not can you ask them to come and do it?
alkar sounds like you went through everything. well done for coming out the end so positive, he looks lovely in pics.
thank you for all sympathy re building work. am feeling better as can see end in sight-ish. thanks for link to air purifier pk will def keep it in mind if dust still bad in 2 weeks. pg hysteria re moses basket up a notch as had sudden thought that what if i give basket back to friend who lent me it when she has her next baby and the baby dies of cot death-have my mum to thank for that cheery thought! highly unlikely i know. but have seen uber organic moses b. with mattress for £69. dh will think i am insane but may just buy it with last drop of my wages before job ended. will try to forget about it til next week when hopefully will be in dust free builder free house.
we do now have doors/windows across kitchen. also functioning oven and washing machine. just not allowed into kitchen due to floor and no water in kitchen. and no shower they broke it and they haven't broken wall down to mend it yet-it really could be one of lo's story books...
mil said was 3/5 engaged yesterday and she wouldn't be surprised if i went into labour once builders leave, wonder when that will be.

princessllama · 06/02/2008 21:17

lolo will be thinking of you tomorrow.
omy don't listen too much to mws when phone to go into qs. friend had her lo almost on the journey as mw told her not to come in til cx were 1 min apart!!! other lady i knew was sent away only to give birth at entrance to lifts on all 4's on her own as they said she couldn't be in estab labour if she was able to talk so calmly to them. obviously have also heard brill things about qs from loads of people but worth keeping in mind.

ayrshirelolo · 06/02/2008 22:02

Hiya all, Congratulations Merlypuss!! delighted the twins are safe and sound, good names too!!
Sarah, what can i say? Doc sounds like a grade A f*ckwit to me, thank goodness you had dh and a decent midwife with you! I would echo what everyone else has said about keeping a record of it, the guy should not be allowed to treat people that way (although i understand he's not the only "arse" consultant in the world.... Q - what's the difference between God and a consultant? A - God doesn't think he's a hospital consultant.... sorry, hope no one is offended by that!)
Anyway, had m/wife appoint today, she gave me a sweep and said baby is very comfortable, happy as Larry, cervix is soft and anterior and about 2cm dilated, but no pressure from baby so could go on indefinetly. At that point i kind of fell to bits, so she's booked me in for an induction on Tuesday if nothing happens before. I know it's unlikely to be fun, and i could go for expectant management but i've also heard some ok stories about induction (when my mum had me she got one dose of whatever stuff it was at 10.30am and had me with no intervention, no stitches etc 3 hours later. My sister also had both hers with induction, one straighforward and quick, one C/sec... i think it's pot luck!)and my last labour was spontaneous and hellish (back to back, small pelvis, epi and forceps....birth plan in the bin!)
Sarah hope the castor oil works, fluffy mummy on Jan thread did it and avoided induction, so go for it! Personally i've had a really dodgy tummy every night for a week (sorry, tmi ) so not sure it would help me, but hope it works for you, girl!
Anyway, going to go and have hot bath (how long before you know if sweep worked? Imagine it hasn't as nothing to report 7 hours later..) and try to shift sciatica... thank you all for the sympathy and lovely thoughts, am going for lunch with my mum tomorrow (unless i'm having a baby!) but will check in and see who else has hatched later on.... think it's only me and possibly one other left in Jan thread now.... don't you all go hatching before next week now, i'll get paranoid! night all, lolo x

omy · 06/02/2008 22:10

Congratulations Merlypuss! Wow more twins how fantastic. Glad all is well now.
And well done Alkar!!
Princessllama - i feel for you with builders ugh. Thanks for the word of warning about QC. I really want to avoid that bldy induction if I can. I am so cross that that doctor got me all worried about the baby this morning - just what you don't need - stress!

Jaysthird · 06/02/2008 22:15

Alker, Daniel is gorgeous, congratulations! I think he looks like his 4D scan!

Jaysthird · 06/02/2008 22:18

oops........ and Merlypuss, well done you!!!

LOVEMYMUM · 06/02/2008 22:33

PK - If you are unhappy, then the hormones will affect your LO. Well done on telling DH what happened. I can't believe MIL said that about smoking in the bathroom. I would be tempted to say "This is my house so please respect my wishes and the health of my child and myself".

More new arrivals. Well done new mums (sorry - have forgotten who you are - pregnancy brain (embarrassed emoticon).

Those of you who aren't happy with maternity care: Please raise it with your midwife or consultant. Do not bottle it up.

My BP is also a bit erratic. At my appointments it goes near or over 140/90 (which is considered high). I measure it at home twice a day using a monitor I bought from Boots and log it on a chart (date, time and BP reading). This gives a much more accurate measure of what's going on.

120/90 is borderline: It means that one has a tendency towards high BP and needs to be monitored. However, if urine is ok then it may just be anxiety (which i think is happening to me). (Lovemymum's mother nods vigorously in agreement ).
