Good morning all you creme egg lovers ( and those weird ones amongst us who don't appreciate them)

Good luck for all the scans coming up this week, and next.

China have just tried to CAT you but mumsnet says your settings do not allow me to do this. You can either change them or CAT me.

Am dashing off to aquanatal but would love to give you more details over email.

You've feisted me up now, was feeling too shy to say anything but now I think Imay have a case!!!

Thanks again

bitofadramaqueen · 11/02/2008 13:12

hi basilbrush - I work in HR. It's unlawful for either party in an employment contract to vary the terms and conditions of employment without the agreement of the other. Here's some info on the basics here. This is probably the most relavant starting point if your maternity entitlement is set out in your contract.

Is your school in the state or independent sector? Either way, I would have a chat with your Union rep or caseworker.

On nappies - I got my totsbots bamboozles delivered today and they are so tiny and cute! (OMG - my maternal gene my finally be kicking in!!!!).

Deb - I think your friend is being terribly selfish. If I was her, I would have been mortified that'd you'd travelled all that way and really gone out of my way to arrange to visit. Anyway, dont know why she didn't book to stay with you, I had a nosy on your website and your place looks fab!

makecakesnotwar · 11/02/2008 13:31

Systems addict- I'm a first time mum who has just been diagnosed (at 23 weeks) with SPD. HAd my physio referral, although all they did was give me some stuff to read on how to get in and out of bed, then measure me for a support brace. Said support brace, though helpful, is also bloody annoying since I have to rejig it everytime I stand up/sit down, but does make things a little easier. I have another appointmnet on 21st. I have the luxury of working fro home, but still end up doing a lot of stair in the day and have a dog to take care of, but bloody glad I no longer nanny as I really couldn't have coped. Don't have any advice other than get to your GP, but didn't want you to think you were alone...

BB- very narked on your behalf but so glad mnetters have such good advice!

needahand · 11/02/2008 13:33

Hi ladies

sorry to interrupt, but has any of you had Braxton Hicks yet? I think I did yesterday, was just wondering if it is normal at this stage (21 weeks)

BB- what a nightmare for you, I am sure there are plenty of people on MN who can give you good advice. Be strong and make sure you get what you are entitled to.

Systemsaddict - I too have started suffering from SPD. Well actually it started about 2 months ago. I didn't suffer at all with my ds until after the birth when I could only walk at a snails pace - I actually got overtaken by a granny with a zimmer frame whilst walking to the town hall to register my ds birth!!!!! I also couldn't get into bed without help or put pants/socks on etc. I didn't realise what I had until it started again at about 12-14 weeks when I did some more reading on it. At the moment I am just suffering when I turn over in bed at night and if I laze in awkward positions on the coach - I need to be flat out or upright no in between. I have also just started to notice a niggle if I have been sitting in my office chair for too long. I spoke to my midwife about it and she is referring me to a maternity physio who I should see in the next couple of weeks. I really want to know what I can do to stop it getting worse. In some ways I am fortunate in my job in that it is office based but it's a large company and I have a long walk from the carpark with a very heavy lap top to carry. Once on site I can use the lifts - although this will make me feel v lazy as I normally use the stairs. I guess if the worst comes to the worst I can work from home but it feels like a bit of a cop out. I also worry about lugging my ds around and getting him in and out the car all the time as I can't really stop doing this without putting a stop to his fun on the days I don't work. Do you know if SPD tends to affect both sides of your pelvis as I only have pain on one side at the moment. Lets hope it stays that way.

Debs - that is truly awful for your son. I can't believe your whole family put themselves out to go and meet these people - they should be ashamed of themselves. How on earth you explain their actions to your son I don't know. I'm sending your son a virtual hug to make up for their insensitivity.

TaurielTest · 11/02/2008 13:52

Another SPD sufferer here - I was diagnosed by my GP a month ago, and tomorrow am (finally!) seeing a specialist physio. I'm getting quite a lot of abdominal/groin pain plus some in my hips - for me, pillow between the knees helps a bit, sitting up straight legs uncrossed helps a bit, but i'm pretty fed up with it already. Having to cancel even modest social plans and miss a bit of work, as I can't walk around much, and I can't sleep for more than 2-3 hours at one go. I'm hoping a brace will help, and I'm also keen to find out what exercise I would be okay to do, as am feeling rather lumpen

systemsaddict · 11/02/2008 13:54

Thanks makecakes and josie. I too remember being overtaken by zimmers in the weeks after ds' birth, I didn't think I'd ever get back to normal again! I think I need to give myself a bit of a talking to and remember that I did get back to normal, and that this is all going to be worth it after all ...

Just had to turn down a playdate at a soft play centre for ds next Sunday though as I can't clamber around after him and he is too little just yet to go in alone when it's full of older kids . Hope he doesn't miss out on too much with all this. I guess a little sister will be more than adequate compensation in the long run.

Deb, your friend needs some lessons in basic courtesy - your poor son! I wish I could send him a virtual treat of some kind to make up for it!!

looneytune · 11/02/2008 13:57

BB - that's awful but I'm sure you can sort it with the help from the people on here who seem to know their stuff Good luck and don't let them get away with it!!

Debs - how awful, poor ds Some people don't have a clue do they!!

Josie - mine started on the left side, right in my groin and although still worse on that side, it has moved to both sides at times, right into the front (pubic bone) and sometimes in my coxix area. I'd say it depends on each person really. Hope it doesn't get any worse for you. I'll update you after my trip to oestopath tomorrow as although I'm booked to see the physio person at the hospital, they were crap last time tbh.

Right, lo has come to the end of her lunch so time to go.

systemsaddict · 11/02/2008 13:58

And thanks puddock too It really does help to feel I'm not on my own with this. Do report back on how you get on with physio.

On sleeping, I have a Theraline Big V pillow - like a long beanbag - which was the only thing that helped me sleep last time, I highly recommend it. You can get just the right amount of beans for in between knees and under bump to be comfortable - I'd already not be sleeping well if it wasn't for my 'snake'!

needahand · 11/02/2008 13:59

BB I am not VABC but I have decided to hire a doula too as I had a long and painful delivery first time round, and I am sure having had someone (who knew what they were doing) would have helped. Also apparently in hospital it is one midwife for 3/4 women, so if I want some constant care, I thought it would be better. I did post a thread on MN about it and one doula who interested me was recommended. I also looked on Doula UK. Two of the three I met were very nice (the last one was too but didn't appear v reliable). But in the end, I ended up hiring the one recommended on MN. You need to see them though, as my favourite one when I spoke to them turned out to be the unreliable on and a big no no

dramaqueen the are just tightening of the abdoment, usually painless, a bit like contraction. I was asking because although I did get them with DD1, I didn't get them so early and I am a bit worried because I went in premature lab with DD1 and my two BH yesterday were uncomfortable/painful. Luckily a good night sleep seems to have done the trick. I put it down to the stress of the weekend (DD had to be rushed to A&E with extremely high temperature. But she is recovering now)

Josie It might not be SPD. I had pain in my hip/lower back and went to see physio and doctor. My problem is with some of my joints. Obviously not as serious as SPD, but I have to wear a SI belt and be careful with my movements and not to carry things. I am under strict orders to work from home too. You should go and see someone, at least physio can give you exercises that helps or show you how to lift DC without aggravating hte situation

Rolf · 11/02/2008 14:17

Needahand and Basilbrush - I'm thinking of hiring a doula too. There's a birthing centre (I won't use the birthing centre -too far) here which offers a doula service and they also have a service where one of their indep. midwives comes with you to an NHS hospital. They aren't wearing their midwife "hat" but of course still have all that experience at natural births. The hospital I'm going to is very good but they get busy, and I would find it reassuring to know that I have someone with me all the time. The only problem is that becuase it's a nidwife it's more expensive than a doula.

I met the midwife in question a while ago and she seemed very nice. She also teaches hypnobirthing techniques and I'm quite keen on that, although DH will need a bit of persuade.

Ernest - great about the house. Are you going to post pictures?

josey · 11/02/2008 14:18

Debs thats awful your poor son.

Ernest hope all goes well with the house I dont envy you.

I didnt know buying pink things for your DD was chavtasic maybe I should stick to burberry next time round. Hohum. Ive never been a fan of pink for myself but I craved it when expecting dd and I craved blue when expecting DS that might sound a bit odd but I didnt notice it, it was my granny that pointed it out.

Im having issued with lower back pain and have been going for pregnancy massages plus I bought a support belt as I couldnt walk my dog without getting ripping stitch pains, both have helped massively and I can now walk my dog no problem though I am aware when trying to turn in bed that my hip is locking.

Floradix arrived today so hoping to be bouncing fit in a week or so, Im glad to hear G43 that it does work.
I have also been reading up on Iron intake and I didnt know before that milk and things like gaviscon stop Iron absorbtion. I know taking orange juice with your meals or suppliments absorb it quicker into the system.
Have been drinking horlicks before bed as well and having the best nights sleep no heartburn plus its got a good amount of Iron in it as well though the milk probably counter acts

PiggyPenguin · 11/02/2008 14:20

Its been busy in here today!

On the nappies front - sorry it was a while ago but am trying to catch up - I am also going to use the nature nappies disposables. I tried re-usables with ds but they were so hot and bulky he had terrible heat-rash with them so we gave up.

Has anyone actually filled in the birth plan section of their notes yet? Wondered what people were ideally hoping for...

sophiewd · 11/02/2008 15:41

DEB feel very on behalf of your son

CHINA the other way to go with nappies is to see if there is a wash and delivery service in your area, basicly they will delver clean ones and take away dirty ones, also see if your local council with give you a grant for using reusables.

BB see your union rep ASAP if you have one, they can't do that to you.

Had a great weekend, the sun was shining and some of the gardening got done, we have a huge garden and my friend who is a very keen gardner has none so she is coming back next Sunday, and all I have to do is cook her lunch.

nh101andhertwinbeans · 11/02/2008 16:07

Sybil - I think in my birth plan I'll have things like:
I want to be able to walk around ie not restricted to bed
I want to stand/squat for the birth if poss.
No routine internal monitoring of the babies' heartbeats
No routine episiotomy
No routine injection to bring on the placenta

But I think this is very much first-time-mum dream world stuff! And I am prepared to go in there with a very open mind about what will happen. And as I am having twins the likelihood that any of my plan can happen for me is low (except the episiotomy because at least my babies should be small!).

But I am just going to read as much as I can about labour and birth beforehand so then at least I am not scared of the unknown.

I had a friend who didn't want to know what it was going to be like so didn't read anything. She had a nightmare birth and now wishes she was more prepared for the different things that can happen and how you might want to respond.

Re. perineum massage, definitely going to be doing that, I read it's for last six weeks before EDD. I have a friend who is a midwife at Chelsea & Westminster and she prides herself in her "intact perineums"!! So cutting/tearing is not always necessary. I eat lots of essential fats (nuts, seeds, oily fish) and that adds elasticity to the skin too so should help. But as someone else pointed out, an episiotomy is not the end of the world. I just don't want one of them for the first baby and then have to have a caesarean for the second! Ouch!

Basil - your employer definitely can't do that, I am shocked if that is a state school though I guess it is not as I thought their terms were negotiated nationally? Anyway, defnitely contact your union, and if you are not in one, join! Hope China can help.

Rolf, your post made me laugh! I am sure my DH's files are always in top order!!! So yes our DHs definitely know each other and I think it is nice. It will be great to meet up once our babies are born.

If you are after a doula, there's a nice one in Southport who posts on here, called Lulumama. Not sure if she covers your area.

needahand · 11/02/2008 16:19

Rolf I am taking hypnobirthing classes too. So far I am finding hard to relax, but my perspective on a lot of things has changed already and there is nothing to loose by trying is there?

Re the pink things: I hate pink and don't consider myself to be a chav...however DD1 loves pink, everything has to be pink (even her icecream)...so I have to grin and bear and hope it will pass...I still buy her loads of clothes in other colours to wear in her "not pink" days!

Re birth plan: it is all in my head but have yet to put pen to paper. I want to be active, try to have access to water, and breathe the baby out as opposed to pushing. I also want to eat (they starved me during my first labour) and so on. My birth plan is going to be very detailed as there are a lot of things I would do differently this time round.

For all of those thinking of hiring a doula, hypnobirthing or natural birth, I would recommend reading "Stand and deliver" it is a great book and quite fun to read.NH I would start with this one. I was like you friend: didn't do enough reading or preparation first time round. Won't happen this time.

RE Perineum, can't be bothered with massage myself but apparently giving birth on all fours or in water reduces the risks of tearing

systemsaddict · 11/02/2008 16:20

Last time, my birth plan specified everything I didn't want, and through a long induction I ended up having it all! It was fine though, the main thing was we both ended up OK at the end of it, and it did really help to have thought all the options through step by step, it meant I felt very in control because I knew what I was saying yes to at every point. The process of sitting down and writing it was an important one for me, helped me feel like I knew what I was doing, and is a special memory of my pregnancy.

This time round it says, 'The birth will go as it goes. I want skin to skin and breastfeeding as soon as possible afterwards.' And that's it!

needahand · 11/02/2008 16:20

oops double post. I am too keen

Josie57 · 11/02/2008 16:30

I too agree with systems addict I found writing the birth plan was probably better preparation for me and my dh as it meant we both knew what we ideally wanted during the birth. In reality a lot of it does go out the window depending on circumstances. My best advice if you can stand it is to read read and read. I read all the real life birthing stories i could because I felt that knowledge was power and I didn't want someone trying to explain some medical situation to me whilst I was high/out of it giving birth.

This time round my birth plan will be:

Go with the flow
Give me the baby as soon as poss after the birth
Give me lots of food!!!!! The two weetabix I was given after the birth last time didn't even touch the sides!!!! I hadn't eaten for 24 hours and I had been sick a lot early on so I was starving!

nh101andhertwinbeans · 11/02/2008 16:38

Yes definitely want food!! They might not let me tho cos of the high risk of c-section. Is it necessary to have not eaten before a c section?
And skin to skin contact and BF asap (hopefully will have one baby on my chest while I push out the second!)
