My twins are due in May and it would be nice to have other multiple-mums-to-be to chat to!

Nellstar · 23/09/2008 08:16

Mel you poor thing with so much worry. Rest, rest, rest, take the order for bed rest literally and if you can get friends, relatives, anyone you can to help with your other kids. I really hope you have reassuring news at the scan.

Thanks all for the advice, will check out the products thread.
Good luck aq!

mel2005 · 23/09/2008 14:32

hello
i had my scan and i am over the moon they cant see anything on the placentas and the twins are growing well. it might have healed up so i am going to take it really easy so not to damage it again. the swabs came back ok so its not an infection. they dont know where the bleeding came from so i am going to be really careful.

the sonographer and i had a laugh at the little girl twin today because the little boy was kicking her in the face and she was gulping in fluid, it looked like she was shouting at him. i feel soooooooooo relieved that they both look ok. i am hoping they will stay in now if i take it easy. gosh it was a scare.
i did see someone i used to teach with today, she is 37 weeks pregnant with her second and was HUGE!!!!
i am hoping i will not be bigger than her with my two on board, i wouldnt be able to stand up. i am measuring 30weeks (single baby) at 24 weeks and i have put on 15kg spot on to what the books say for weight gain. the only problem was that their head diameter is small but the circumference is average so they must have long heads? (probably all that kicking)

AQ i am glad you are finally getting your galaxy. its really easy to drive, feels just the same as the c-max. i will be easier to drive than an estate car and the driving position is much better.

GettingBiggerBird · 23/09/2008 14:57

Phew, Mel, what a relief for you. But good idea to take it easy.

Tallulah - not sure what we'll do about sleeping arrangements yet, I'm borrowing everything I can and think I now have two moses baskets, a crib, 2 or 3 cots and a double bed in the twins room. Don't get me wrong - we don't have room for all that, I'm just keeping my options open. I'm going to get DH to see if he can adjust our old cot so it just has three sides and can sit next to our bed so I can access easily without getting up. If that doesn't work, then if the crib is good, I'm hoping we can ditch the moses baskets and keep them both in that next to our bed for the first few weeks, then I'm hoping to put them in a cot together in their room. The second cot will go up much later when they're too big to share. I only did a bit of co-sleeping with DD when really exhausted and then only so I could sleep whilst feeding - don't think it did my nipples any favours though, they were sore. I've made a deal with DH that if I do most of the night stuff he will wait on me hand and foot all day! I may well be kidding myself - my friend said the real struggle is dealing with them during feeds on your own, between the latching, burping and nappy changes. Mars, exactly which pair of hands do we use for compression in all of that .

On positioning in the cot, I thought I read somewhere that they lie head by head with feet at opposite ends (does that make sense?), then when they get a bit bigger, they lie along opposite diagonals with their heads near one another again.

Pazza I love your gushing about your DTs, very heartening - more please.

Nellstar, agree about the naive teacher. She would be so mortified if she knew she'd said something insensitive. You can tell she hasn't had a baby herself. Her voice is very soothing in the relaxation though, so I'll forgive her!

MM your DS's co-sleeping, just adorable. My DD looked rather alarmed when we visited friend's twins on Saturday - it really looked like a penny dropped, and not in a good way.

AQ you're a marvel, I really hope things get moving on their own in time.

accessorizequeen · 23/09/2008 15:36

That must be such a relief for you, Mel, really glad to hear it! But you've got to slow down now . After I had scare at 28 weeks, I finally got the message and ta da I'm 39 weeks tommorrow and they're still happy.

Although...had several hours of contractions last night, got about 8 mins apart then faded off twice arggghhhh. Even rang the hospital at one point, we were so convinced. I've had plenty of contractions today as well, so I think tonight might be the night! First twin bouncing on my cervix now, I've just lain around all day and dp's just gone to get the galaxy.

GBB, cannot believe you've managed to get hold of all the stuff. We've bought 2 really rubbish cotbeds (that would be dp's dept) from a friend, the latch is broken on the one we put in the nursery and it only has 2 positions dangerously high or back-breakingly low. Excellent . Because we're now going to sell the MB double on, we don't have carrycots downstairs (baby jogger due to arrive early next week I hope!). DS2 hated moses basket, so I daren't even borrow some, utterly pointless last time. We have no room in the nursery for a sofa bed or anything because of the extra chests of drawers we've had to put in there to contain huge amounts of clothes & nappies. We did buy an aero blow-up double bed but I think it will only go in the living room downstairs. I know I need to order something, but I've spent so much money lately can't bring myself to do it.

GettingBiggerBird · 23/09/2008 15:46

AQ how exciting about the contractions, sounds like it's well on the way. Hope you're not too uncomfortable. And I know what you mean about moses baskets, I would rather not use them so hope one of the other options will work out. I'm not usually very good at asking for help or to borrow stuff from friends but something about the imminent arrivals has made me brazen, I've been asking everyone I know! All the stuff I've pilfered so far is crowding in on every available surface in our living room and bedroom while we have the work done in the rest of the house - very claustrophobic and not helping on the bizarre dream front (being attacked by insipid yellow baby bouncers and giant baby baths, bumbos etc ).

accessorizequeen · 23/09/2008 15:51

Brazen is good, gbb, wish I had been. Although family have bought us quite a lot this time. at dreams of giant bumbos!

TALLULAHBELLE · 23/09/2008 20:14

Mel good news on the scan. Must be a big relief.

I had my hosp appt today - 1:30 at the clinic followed by a 3pm appt for detailed scan. By 3pm I was still waiting to be seen at clinic although midwife had taken my b/p in the waiting room. Eventually was called for my scan & by time had that it was 4pm. I was exhausted & in pain from sitting around so much so ended up going home without ever having my ante-natal appt. Scan showed everything to be Ok so am hoping didn't miss anything important by skipping the rest.

GBB Think brazen is the way to go this time. I have decided to take anything offered & DH can like it or lump it. Last time round he gave it - don't want anything 2nd hand for my baby. These poor wee tykes will be lucky to get anything new .

AQ Sounds like things are kicking off. Fingers crossed you get the birth you want.

PP2 Thanks for comments re DD. Unfortunately the mohawk is no more. She's blonde now too. Must update profile pics.

mel2005 · 25/09/2008 16:56

gosh its been quiet on here,
anyway, anyone considered this twin cot?
www.twinsuk.co.uk/cat.php?cid=7&page=4
i have found a place in ireland that is cheaper, if i have got the conversion from euro right its £290 inc two matresses, delivered. i am going to order it as i really like it and i am sure it will sell well on e-bay when the twins have finished with it. i think the draws underneath will come in handy.

i hope AQ has had her lovely little beans by now. one of our workmens daughters had her little girl last night 8lb10 she was 40+10w

TALLULAHBELLE · 25/09/2008 20:03

Cot looks lovely Mel but takes up too much space for me. I need to be able to push one side against the wall. But I see you get a discount if you buy two so hopefully you'll find someone nearby to go with you.

MerryMarigold · 25/09/2008 21:17

No sign of aq. getting excited....

PazzaPlusTwo · 26/09/2008 12:40

I went to see 'friend' yesterday - her little beans are two weeks old! Soooo unbelievably cute!!! Made my two look like ogres in comparison. Can't believe how much they've grown in 5 months.

Mine shared a moses basket for a good month at the start. Then we moved them into this:
Babydan playpen from John Lewis £125

... with one side removed and pushed up against our bed - DH drilled 4 holes at the right height to make it level with the bed as our bed is very low, didn't take long at all. You might not even need to alter it, it has two height sanyway.

I got two crib mattresses (90x40cm) and filled the gap with a folded blanket (which can't be pulled up - covered it with a sheet tucked in under the mattresses).

Takes much less room than 2 cots (98x98cm)and will last us the best part of a year I reckon.

MerryMarigold · 26/09/2008 12:59

Oh well done, Pazza. How is it all going with her? Is she managing bf? How much did the littl'uns weight? Are they in tiny baby stuff? . Dh just 'let me know' today (after I asked) that he can only get one week off if babies are born before 17th Oct (which is when I am 37 weeks)! Was s'posed to be 3 weeks. But he has an intense project deadline for 17th so can't afford anymore time than a week. Ah well, will see what happens. My Mum could be available with some hassle.

GettingBiggerBird · 26/09/2008 13:00

Hi Pazza! I wish 'friend' would get her butt on here and choose a nickname so we don't have to go for this subterfuge! Aren't her DTs adorable, and she's coping so brilliantly.

Everyone else, I can vouch for what a great option using the modified playpen was, we got to take a look at Pazza's and it's so neat and will last quite a bit longer than just having them share a single cot as it's square so more room for growing.

Can't wait to hear AQ's news. How is everyone else? I've been to see my acupuncturist to see what I can do about DT1's position, and she was so reassuring - as it's my second delivery, I might still be allowed to go for it naturally even if DT1 stays breach. It's made me stop worrying so that's great - and will probably mean DT1 turns anyway! Really struggling with work and my journey now, counting the days (15 allowing for days off and working from home)...

GettingBiggerBird · 26/09/2008 13:03

MM she's bf'ing realy well, getting enough sleep for now. The DTs were 6lb and a shade under. Her DH has gone back to work now and she's got a friend over for company today so they're going for their first proper outing to the park today with new buggy, what a glorious day for it.

PazzaPlusTwo · 26/09/2008 15:53

Ha ha I just bumped into friend, DTs and friends friend in the park! i had to borrow a muslin square off her cos i'd come out totally disorganised ... you'd think I was the one with the newborns...

GBB i think you should choose her a nickname i am sure she is lurking anyway ... hi friend!!!

MarsLady · 26/09/2008 20:23

I'm hoping to spend more time with Friend from next week but she's doing so well I don't think that she needs me. lol

You'll do as well GBB especially after you laughed at her

MerryMarigold · 26/09/2008 21:00

Wow, am impressed with 'friend' going out! Was a gorgeous day though. I managed a small Tesco's shop after a long Ikea one yesterday.

I weighed myself last night. I weigh 90kg! I weighed just over 60 before, that's a lot of weight gain. Not sure whether to be proud or worried! Probably neither. I think I am bigger than 'friend' was when we saw her. Diabetes is ok, never goes really, really high - but also mostly not under the recommended levels. I haven't been on top of it at all today, very tired, missed 2 injections.

Dyed babygros today - oooh, I love dying stuff. A friend gave me a million white gros from her dd. Too boring! Dyed them yellow, blue, green and orange ones will follow! Look cute because they have a little teddybear badge in white which didn't dye at all, so they have a cute badge too.

Mel, hope all is ok. Can't wait to hear Accessorize's news. Must have had them now.

accessorizequeen · 26/09/2008 22:47

Nope, still here at 39+2!!!! Loads and loads of contractions since Monday but only for an hour or so and then stops. Arggggggghhhhhh. At this rate it will be induction on Wednesday, I'm starting to wish I hadn't said no to last weds as they'd be here by now.

I have put on 3 and a half stone, I have no idea how many pounds that is but a lot! I don't think about it, just intent on bfing it all away and walking again really fast with the double buggy when it finally arrives. Can't wait to be able to keep up with ds1 again and pick up ds2 for cuddles without sitting down first.

Merry, don't beat yourself up about the diabetes, hard thing to handle on top of everything else

MerryMarigold · 27/09/2008 02:51

oh no accessorize, I jinxed you again...but no post since Tue and all the talk of contractions! There's still time. My friend had natural homebirth the day she was supposed to be induced (40+14!!), went into labour almost exactly the time she was supposed to go to hospital. Her midwife said it happens a lot, so...I've got fingers x'd.

Unfortunately I'm not beating myself up over diabetes, being very careless acually, now that they can come anytime and be pretty safe. Was so tired y'day, just craving sugar and had a fair bit - choc biscuits and a pain au chocolat and a fruit juice (not to mention the usual yoghurts I allow myself ).

In stone, I have put on about 4stone (how much that could become by 39weeks, I don't know). Last time I lost most of my weight post birth (let's face it, that's a lot of blood, placenta, water retention etc.) and the last bit came off when I STOPPED bfing. I think for me, my body held onto the fat until it knew it didn't have to produce calorific milk anymore! I'm not really someone who is bothered about weight, but this type of weight gain is really restricting me now.

mel2005 · 27/09/2008 09:06

i put on 5st with my first single baby and 2 st with my second and this time i already have put on 2.5st, i read that 5st can be normal for term with twins. i have to say that i lost the weight fairly quickly with my first baby but i didnt lose most of the weight with my second until i stopped breastfeeding then it came off gradually over about 6 months. when i got back to normal size i then got pregnant again. i am not that worried as i know it will come off in the end. i dont think i will ever have a flat belly again and i cant imagine i will have the time to cycle and play sports for a long time. it is all worth it though having children is a fantastic experience.

MarsLady · 27/09/2008 12:58

AQ it is a good thing that you have held on to your DTs for this length of time. All is good and all is well. The contractions will continue to build and settle into a pattern. Make sure to eat, drink, rest and pee! Try not to stress. Watch lots of comedies, go out for walks in the sunshine. Try not to focus in on them coming or the induction date. You are doing absolutely the best thing. Be kind to yourself honey.

Merry... stay off the scales. Treat yourself to lovely things like a pedicure (without the foot massage), a pregnancy massage, a favourite film on DVD etc. Not too much fruit juice my angel. The weight will go (you'll be too busy once they're born to gain).

Ladies... you are all doing so well. Keep it up.

MerryMarigold · 29/09/2008 10:59

Accessorize? Anyone out there?!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mars, haven't weighed myself since about 26 weeks, but was feeling intrigued as I feel so heavy - now I know why...I know about fruit juice, but I love it so, just had to cave in!

Scan on Wed. Look forward to seeing what position babies are in...they seem to have moved.

GettingBiggerBird · 29/09/2008 12:18

Hello MM and anyone else lurking. I expect you're really growing now, aren't you MM? I've just had a scan and am amazed to discover that I've got about 5lbs of baby in there already, at just 27 weeks. Blimey. No wonder I'm lumbering! Hope you're not feeling too bad.

After my acupuncture session, I was convinced the DTs had moved - and they have, but now they're BOTH breach. They do seem to have plenty of space still though, so hopefully they'll move.

Off to let my DD run off some of her nutty energy...

MerryMarigold · 29/09/2008 14:42

Wow, that's a fair bit of twin for 27 weeks!! At 30 weeks, mine were about 3.5lbs each. We'll see what they are on Wed, 34wks tomorrow. Ds has decided today for the first time that he doesn't want an afternoon sleep. I am dead. Been relying on that sleep. Need to get him back into his 'bad' routine ie. late night (dh puts to bed), early wake (dh gets breajfast), afternoon nap (I sleep!) . This way round I am gonna have to do bed, breakfast and no nap, no thankyou.

Does both breach mean they are both feet down? Mine have been transverse (lying horizontal) most of the way through, so will see if it's changed.

Pheonixnights · 29/09/2008 14:54

Hi ladies

Just got back from the hospital for my 24 week scan and check up. Everything is fine babies weigh 1lb 8 and 1lb 9 which is spot on supposedly!. They are both breech at the moment which give me the most horrendous sensation when they tap dance on my bladder. Have been weeing loads because of it!! Still plenty of room and time to turn! Feeling really good at the moment which I am making the most of!
