TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2007 15:53

Peachy, I have nothing ready for thisbaby either, not even a vest
Anyone get the impression I don't do organised??

scorpio1 · 18/12/2007 15:55

dd has clothes, maybe becuase it is a novelty for me getting pink. we dont have much else, oh we have bottles and steriliser and 3 packs of nappies.

that is it. going to get stuff in January for her. and my loola!

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2007 16:00

Are we all getting loolas???

scorpio1 · 18/12/2007 16:02

we should see if we can get a bulk buy purchase discount!!

dolly1 · 18/12/2007 16:04

hi all
just had a chance to do a quick scan.
Firstly thanks so much for coming back to me on the feeding thing scorpio. I really appreciate your advice (everyones adivce actually) and think you made some really good points.
Don't feel bad for whatever decision you make re bf. I know lots and lots of people it hasn't worked for. Yes in an ideal world we'd all do it and it would be blissful but then we'd also all have the figures of a supermodel and be married to brad pitt/george clooney/fill in the blank!
I'm going to try my best and make sure the midwife helps me.

Nurseries sound like a nightmare! I'm just starting to think about nurseries/nannies. Which do we think is best from six months? Going back to work a few days a week I think.
Just think they seem too tiny to put in a nursery then so maybe nanny will be better. In saying that my best mate sent her son to nursery from three months and he's perfectly happy and fine so I guess it depends on the child.
What do we think?

dolly1 · 18/12/2007 16:07

Also weight gain - is it normal to have put on just 5lbs at nearly 23 weeks?
My mother assures me it will all suddenly pile on but I don't look any different - just a big bump. My mate who is a few weeks ahead of me has put on 13lbs so I'm just wondering. Eating like a horse too!
Must just be a freak!

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2007 16:19

Dolly, I sent DS to nursery at 8months. He loved the attention. He was in aroom with about 6 other children his age, a million and one different toys to play with and three or four girls that doted on him. If it's only for a few hours a week (DS was 20hours I think) then I'd say nursery. If it;s going to be something more full-time I'd suggest nanny/childminder just because it's a stable person looking after them, but if you're working part-time you'll be the main carer iyswim.

PortAndLemonaid · 18/12/2007 16:21

Breastfeeding -- if you really want it to work, I recommend seeing a breastfeeding counsellor. Most midwives have virtually no training and many of them will tell you stuff that is actively wrong (there are some fantastic ones, though). Although are you getting an independent midwife, dolly (not sure if that was you or not)? If so she's likely to be more switched on.

Nursery depends on your priorities and concerns (and what there is local to you) whether you go for a nursery/nanny/childminder. Mind you, good nurseries fill up quickly anyone wanting to get an April 2008 baby into DS's (fantastic) nursery at six months would have needed to get their name down in September this year. So depending on the situation in your area you may already find your options limited.

Weight: until last week I'd put on 9.5 pounds. Now suddenly I've put on another three pounds in the last week . I'm sure you are fine, though -- I assume the midwife/doctor isn't worried?

We've really found a CM works wonders for us with ds3, but with ds1 a Montessori nursery was fab 9and ds2 as well). IMO its not the setting- its the person who delivers the care. If it's someone warm and loving then all will be OK.

Just redid the list as my scan and DD's age have changed back for some reason, I think there are a couple more people who's LO have gotten a year older too.

dolly1 · 18/12/2007 16:46

Lemonaid, yes I'm going privately and the midwife is wonderful so hopefully she'll be helpful. Am paying her enough!
Is your ds at a private nursery? Is that the reason for the need to get name down asap. Need to get looking into all that asap.

Midwife reassures me I will eventually put on weight and not to worry. Guess this is the calm before the storm!

Hope you are all enjoying it all and getting lots of lovely kicks. Really is much more fun now we've had the scans and they are moving around isn't it?

PortAndLemonaid · 18/12/2007 16:59

Yes, he is -- although TBH most of the nurseries around here are private, and I suspect the ones that aren't are means-tested for places (not entirely sure how that all works). His is generally considered to be the "best" of the local nurseries, but I think even the other "good" nurseries here are starting to fill up for babies starting next autumn already. There are a few that I would personally not feel happy leaving a child at who I am guessing don't fill up until later.

DennytwasNewYear · 18/12/2007 17:09

Do they have less places for younger ones? Is that why you have to get names down so quickly? We really are blessed with having my mum down the road she covers the 22 hours Im at work including school run for less than we used to pay nursery.

i just had a phone call from GP - apparently i have a UTI (tested nearly 2 weeks ago), cant get down there till Thurs to pick script up, another 2 days wont make that much diff will it?

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2007 17:11

wHEN i TOOK ds TO NURSERY HE WAS 8MONTHS OLD (oops caps) and started within a week, no name down etc. It is all dependant on the nursery really.

PeachyHasAFiggyPudInTheOven · 18/12/2007 17:42

Denny go as quickly as you are able- no panic but UTI's can sometimes be implicated in pre-term labour which is why they check you.

Younger babies need a higher child-carer ratio by law in a Nursery, which is why places fill up so quickly. Also, there are many more nurseries catering for the pre-school age than babies- here you'd be ahrd pushed to find much provision before a year, yet at home most nurseries took from 3 months.

Ah yes so much more fun when they are kicking

Not to mention then pleasures of a baby trampolining on your bladder

hee hee hee

dolly1 · 18/12/2007 17:43

Lemonaid which nurserys in SW london would you recommend? And how much do they cost? Hope you don't mind me asking just that I find it so much better to ask someone with experience that spend hours calling around and hearing the same thing from them all.
thanks!

PortAndLemonaid · 18/12/2007 17:52

Whereabouts are you? I'm in Putney so can only really speak for the nurseries here, but there's a West London thread where you could probably get recommendations further afield.

scorpio1 · 18/12/2007 18:30

Millie makes me jump and feels like she bruises my insides.

its like she tries to find dp in the night - she really pushes out and snuggles him! . she's lush!

DennytwasNewYear · 18/12/2007 18:33

Hmmmm may see if I can get mum to pick it up 4 me tom then.

Id love to have a big kicker again, DS was v active whilst carrying him. This one either v quiet or movements being hidden by anterior placenta, kind of making for a paranoid pregnancy, reg think to self now have i felt anything today, then give it a good prod only to worry all over again when it dosent kick me back.

TinyTimLivesinVictorianSqualor · 18/12/2007 18:35

This one batters me, I wake up because of it.
I keep thinking what an earth is it going to be like at term?!

scorpio1 · 18/12/2007 18:38

killing our ribs one by one, VS!

denny - try lying in a room alone have a cold drink and then poke it! my placenta is high anterior, when she kicks it it feels like an air bubble has shifted in my tummy if that makes sense?

DennytwasNewYear · 18/12/2007 19:18

Think part of the problem is so busy running round with other 2 the kicks are too small for me to register so do have to be sitting quietly to feel it. Just done bath and bed for DS, DD has 15 min left on her video think Ill have a glass of coke and a prod B4 have to do her story and then finish the housework, work again tomorrow - the joys.

natalies1982 · 18/12/2007 19:56

hello all wow u guys have been busy

sorry not been around been busy with school plays, etc

i had my scan today and we r having a BOY in total shock as was expecting a girl but baby is looking healthy which is good

can u add me to the list please im due 26th with my 3rd which is a boy

ScamparumpapumpMum · 18/12/2007 19:57

DD went to nursery from 5.5 months because that's when the place became available - 4 full days a week for four months then five. She is at an excellent SureStart nursery which is the cheapest but also the best (by miles) in the area . We were really lucky to get the place having put her down at birth, that's why I had to take it as there might not have been another vacancy for six months and I really wanted her to be there.

I think priority goes to full-time places (probably because they're more reliable revenue-generators) but I don't think it's necessarily harder to get a place for a little one.

For us, nursery works really well because of the social setting, DD is a very gregarious child and really enjoys nursery. She is in toddler room now but still her main relationship is with her key worker from baby room - as we left tonight she said 'bye bye I love you Holly!' and I swear I could see tears in Holly's eyes. This may be luck - they certainly have an incredibly close relationship and I'm not sure all the other kids at nursery have that deep a tie with anyone.

I would suggest exploring the options and seeing what feels right. Try to do as much as you can before LO is born, though - it's horrible thinking about ever going back to work when they're tiny!

Sorry have been quiet, work utter shit still (I know - it's the week before Christmas, someone tell my A-HOLE of a boss) and Mumsnet still taking ages to load on the talk pages. Glad you are all well - Peachy, glad you got the diagnosis. Hope all the ill people start feeling better soon! Soph, do watch out for your back, seriously. Plenty of rest and no housework - dirty pig places are better than being stuck on bedrest!
