Hi all and welcome to all Newbies

Thanks for all the advise on the anti D i can't believe that i wasn't offered it before and wasn't given it when i had my miscarriage in march even though i asked if i needed it ( maybe because i was only 6 weeks ?)But i will defiantly contact midwife ti make sure i get it at 28 weeks Thanks Girls xx

Had a manic weekend at BIL 40th birthday party everyone drunk except me !!!!!i'm a seasoned alcoholic when not preggers so quite hard to be out of the drunk circle but on the plus size it was really lovely to wake up with no hangover and see everyone else looking like death and feeling like poo

I'm using my moses basket again altho it's in the garage so i will have to give it a good air before uses but i will get a new mattress for the cot as DD is still in it and by the time the baba gets in it a replacement will be needed!!

With regards to the birth i couldn't bare to sit down when i was having my contractions (had dd standing up) so the pool would not have been any good for me even if id wanted one. That's the thing about labour you never know how you will feel so if you like the idea of a pool then book it but just go with the flow when the time comes.

One last thing before i stop rambling on can i ask how are the weeks of pregnancy divide out into months so im 22 wks now how many months will that make me and so on. Hope that makes sense??

Bye for now xx

sweetbean · 21/01/2008 08:42

That should have been plus SIDE not SIZE

macaco · 21/01/2008 10:51

Hi everyone. Welcome and congratulations to new people!

Sweetbean I would count 22 weeks as 5 and a half months but it's all quite confusing as if you count 4 weeks as a month (which they seem to) then you'd be pregnant for 10 months! I was watching Life before birth the other night and they count 38 weeks as full term, I suppose because they're not counting from the date of last period, but from conception. I'm 27 weeks which makes me almost 7 months but I reckon I conceived around 1st August which actually only makes me about 6 months pregnant.

Which leads me into a slight rant.

RANT ALERT

So, biologically, i.e counting from when I probably conceived and not LMP I'm about 6 months pregnant. But everyone asks and I tell them 27 weeks cos that's how the medical people count it and I'm sooooo sick of being told I'm really small. I know I should be grateful that I've not put on too much but it's starting to make me paranoid that there's something wrong. I KNOW there's nothing wrong as at the scan everything was fine, but it's beginning to bother me. I was shopping for baby clothes on Sat and this pregnant woman asked me a question and we got talking, told her I was 27 weeks and she goes into the you're so small routine. She's MUCH bigger than me but says she's 7 months and I'm "so thin". Got all paranoid. Then MIL starts the same thing yesterday, you're so small! I don't even think I am that small. I'm clearly pregnant. I'll have to put some photos on profile and you can tell me if you think I am small or not.

MIL winding me up as well about maternity leave. She can be a bit dopey sometimes so maybe she's just not working out the dates but I say I'm on ML from Easter (at 34 weeks) and she's like....soo soon, why are you stopping so early? But others have said it, even mothers. Why 34 weeks, why so early? I drive to work and it's already getting uncomfy driving home with bump getting bigger. I work in evenings and I get more kicks and BH and general uncomfiness then. I don't finish til 10pm and I work with children and teenagers...only my last class of the evening are adults. I think I'll be ready to put my feet up by 34 weeks. And ANYWAY it's out of my hands, the way my ML works if I go on any longer than Easter I'd be working for free anyway as the ML has to start then.

I know I'm probably being over sensitive. I blame the hormones.

podglet · 21/01/2008 11:51

Morning all,

Sorry not been around again but I have a very poorly DS - have just had to pick him up from nursery again as his temp is 40 degrees - the docs have told me they can't get him in this morning and to try again later but if his temp doesn't come down with Nurofen or it gets higher then I have to ring an ambulance

sweetbean - I count 26 weeks as 6 months because that is exactly half a year IYSWIM? hope that helps - with regards to comments over size - I have the opposite problem and it is very annoying too - yes, I am sure it isn't twins, yes I am sure of the dates etc... it really winds me up too. I'm not going on mat leave til 37 weeks but 34 is more than acceptable and if you won't get paid for it then why should you work longer??? Am for you!

We'll be using the same crib for this one as we did for DS - it's not very old and was in fab condition. He was only in it for 4 months anyway so I don't see the point in replacing it.

I had group b strep IV with DS but I was on the induction IV too so was confined to bed

blobsmummy · 21/01/2008 12:05

Macaco - you're not being overly sensitive - everyone else is being completely insensitive.

You sound just like me in my last pregnancy! I was quite tiny carrying DD and everyone and his dog seemed to feel compelled to tell me how I was too small etc etc. I felt humungous personally! Just think though, less flab to lose once baby is born... there are up-sides!

I also left work last time at 34 weeks as I was mentally/emotionally/physically exhausted, and knew that was no condition to give birth in. I really appreciated those 4 weeks I had off before DD arrived to sleep and do things 'just for me'. 34 weeks is definitely not too early. Grrrr - it really winds me up when people give their unwanted opinion on every decision you make whilst pregnant - and unfortunately it continues once baby is born aswell. The flow of 'helpful' advice seems never ending.

You have my deepest empathy macaco!

I'm not buying a new cot mattress as the one we've got cost over £100 and DD never messed it up at all. She only stopped using it 2 weeks ago when we moved her to a big bed, so I know that it's clean and well kept.

DH's snoring is driving me barmy. I'm not sleeping all that well anyway due to being uncomfortable and being kicked, and I'm just soo tired with working and looking after a toddler, that I need all the beauty sleep on offer. DH would normally move to the spare room, but we're doing that up for DD to go into so she can vacate the nursery, so I'm stuck with him doing Darth Vader impressions next to me all night - I can hear him through ear plugs, so am getting a bit desperate. If you see an item on the BBC News about an overly tired pregnant mother of one suffocating her husband whilst he slept - that'll be me!

OP posts:
podglet · 21/01/2008 12:10

Sorry, got confused - meant Macaco, not sweet bean

Blobsmummy, you sounds like me with DP - I have been sleeping on the sitting room floor because it is the only place I can get comfy and DP is keeping me awake UPSTAIRS! You do get murderous thoughts at 3am

pregnabrain · 21/01/2008 13:56

Macaco - I don't think you're being over sensitive either. For some reason, when you are pregnant people feel the right to comment on the way you look etc in a really personal way. Everyone told me I was tiny last time and it started to worry me too. I suppose that one person saying it doesn't realise that there are 20 other people saying it as well, and that the cumulative effect can be worrying. Just try to ignore them and go on your scan results and midwife visits. The professionals are the only people to listen to!

Thanks for all the cot responses. I'll drag ours out and check for nastiness. It should be fine, though, as dd used it until a couple of months ago and we had a waterproof cover over it protecting it from sick / poo etc.

blobsmummy - totally with you on the snoring thing. It never used to bother me in my pre-children sleep-filled nights, but now i find it SO irritating. Particularly when dd was newborn. I just couldn't believe that, having been up three or four times for feeding etc I was being forced to lie awake in bed listening to the equivalent of a brass band next to me . The spare room got a LOT of use at that time.

bobsmum · 21/01/2008 15:51

I"m all excited - my friend just had twin boy and girl at lunchtime - 6lbs2 and 6lbs12 - that's a lot of babies

Need to get nice pressies now!

jacobandlysetteandabump · 21/01/2008 15:57

hi newbies and everyone who's been here for a while!

unfortunately for me it's not dh who is snoring but ds! poor little thing has a terrible cold and is in with us from about 4 in the morning and he is so noisy poor little man!

we are borrowing a moses basket again (this one will hve done 1 lo before us, and ds's one had done about 4 babies before us) but we are using the mattress from ds as he was only in it for about 6 weeks before going into his cotbed. ds is still in his cotbed and to cut a long story short we have to put him into cotbed with no sides so the new baby can go into ds's current cotbed. so we have a new mattress but only because the cotbeds go up till they are around 5 years old!

had the steroid injections last thursday and friday and felt dreadful all weekend - all shaky and wobbly, and couldn't walk further than the end of the road . trying to eat mountains of oranges again to keep the cold that ds and dh have got although what with dh's being man flu i'm unlikely to catch that

anyway, must away - too much on my list of jobs from dh to do to be idling the day away on mn ....

xxx

JackBlackRoady · 21/01/2008 16:00

macaco, you have a neat baby with not much water - that's exactly how my DS was described when I was hospitalised at 8 months with pre-eclampsia last time. And when my waters broke that midwife was right. I had a firm little bump, easy to hide and easy to get back to pre-pregnancy shape! Although maybe only being 18 helped

I have just added a pic to my profile taken by DS, and I am 24weeks + 4days today. Depending on what clothes I am wearing, I am said to be 'only just there' or 'definitely showing' - obviously I haven't come across those rude people who say 'tiny' or 'huge'!

I am feeling good today - I have a stinking cold, eyes running and nose completely blocked. Can't smell or taste anything - I don't feel sick!!!!! Hooray!!!

Also - a lovely lady on freecycle has a moses basket for me to recondition; work was really satisfying this morning; we may exchange on the house we are buying tomorrow and my mum's speech is definitely improving Today is a good day!

Love and hugs to you all, JBR xxx

blobsmummy · 21/01/2008 16:42

Thanks for the kind words of sympathy regarding my Darth Vader DH - I will be thinking of you similarly suffering when I am awake at 4am tomorrow morning trying to banish the murderous thoughts from my mind!

Pregnabrain - our back room also got a lot of use when DD was born, as DH's snoring would wake her up.

Jacob & JBR - sending you lots of vitamin c vibes!

We're having a girl. I'm so happy, don't get me wrong, would have been equally so with a boy, but really am pleased. So going to be a mum to two daughters. DD is thrilled, she really wanted a sister. Now all we have to do is decide on a name.

KangaAndRoo · 21/01/2008 20:58

Oh Macaco...I can sooo sympathise with you hun!!
I too am getting the 'youre tiny' but I just say..well at 23+ weeks I really dont want to be any bigger as im only half way! (with a bit of swearing added lol) I was MAHOOSIVE with my dd and really piled on the pounds...seems you cant be a 'normal size' in pregnancy as I got 'youre huge' on 1st preg and 'youre small' on 2nd! Wish these people that think they can pass judgement would make their frickin minds up!!

Another thing!!!....rant rant rant who/what the hell are they comparing your bump to? what is the normal size eh? EXACTLY!!! chin up chuck! x

macaco · 21/01/2008 22:42

Thank you all, you've made me feel much better! I think it was just starting to get to me, the everyone having an opinion on EVERYTHING, maternity leave, weight, the lot. I'm quite happy to be slimmer, it's all got to come off after, and as my mum says, it's not like you aren't going to get huge! Come April all of us ladies are going to be HUMUNGOUS, even the "small" ones

coby · 21/01/2008 23:15

Hello all , I haven't been particularly huge with my previous FT pregnancies but on both occassions the head engaged really early so I waddled like a duck - got lots of comments of 'what are you complaining about - waiting until you are full term' you're hardly big are you? I felt like walking around with a 'comments' box around my neck so people could just post their opinions and save their breath .

Anyway I'm pretty sure my little nugget is not so little. I'm going to ask my MW what she thinks when I see her on Tuesday. I can clearly feel his head and bum and they seem a long way apart for 23 weeks gestation . His Daddy is very well built so he may well be big too .

Nugget will be going straight into his biggest sister's cotbed when he is born - really hoping to be able to get a new mattress for it but they are so expensive. This one was bought (£100) in 2000 and has been used for 3 children - it's still more supportive than DD2's mattress which we bought new in 2004 (£50), but that's not the point I guess

Wolverina · 22/01/2008 06:12

Hi everyone
Coby, I'm glad you mentioned your LO's cotbed as I was going to ask something along those lines; do you have to use a crib/moses basket from birth, or can the baby go straight into a cot? My son had a crib but only used it for a month or so, and we don't have it any more so I'm reluctant to buy a new one that might not get a lot of use. Anyone got any opinions on this?

I really sympathise with those of you with, er, 'nasally challenged' partners - my husband has been sleeping in the spare room for a few months already. Honestly, I've never heard anything like the noise he makes, I can't believe he doesn't wake himself up, and if he's in with me I tend to just lie there, waiting for it to start and getting more and more annoyed! We're not really 'snuggly' types anyway

Hope everyone has a good day today and congratulation on a little girl indiechick ! xxxx

IndigoBlue · 22/01/2008 09:14

Hi

I'm not buying a new mattress, I've just looked on this website out of interest www.fsid.org.uk & it seems there isn't necessarily any proof that using an old mattress would cause cot death.

Wolverina, we put dd into her cotbed when she was a week old. I know people who've done it from day one. The baby doesn't know any different, that's how I see it anyway. Although I have got a moses basket for this time but only because I got it free from someone.

Jacob&lysette - hope you're feeling ok now after your injection.

Macaco - Most people went on about how small I looked last time, I remember when I was 7 months and someone I know said is there really a baby in there? By this point I was quite annoyed with it all as I'd even been sent for a growth scan as was measuring slightly under but not much. Scan was normal and dd was born weighing 7lb 4oz which is totally average. So most people don't know what they're talking about, everyone carries their baby differently from the next person.

podglet · 22/01/2008 09:34

Morning all,

DS a little better today but I am off work as I managed to faint at the doc's yesterday I have an appointment with both the doc and the midwife today. Don't know what is wrong with me but I have yet another cold and feel yucky.

Another point re size - I had polyhydramnios with DS (excess amniotic fluid) and he was big (7lb 15oz 3 weeks early!) the consultant reckoned I had 3 litres of fluid someone shouted "man the lifeboats" when my waters went... so that affects size too - it also stops silly comments when you reply "well actually there's a problem with the fluid"

bobsmum · 22/01/2008 09:41

podglet - I was told I probably had polyhydramnios with ds, but only after I'd flooded the delivery suite THere were mops, buckets and the entire corridor's supply of Pampers care mats flying around after my waters were crochet hooked! Yuk.

He was 2 weeks early and 8lbs 8oz. At 5ft zero - you can imagine how enormous I looked!

I'm already puffy in the feet/hands and face with no3 and I'm beginning to wonder if it might e a similar story.

bobsmum · 22/01/2008 09:41

lol at man the lifeboats

coby · 22/01/2008 09:50

podglet - the lengths people go to to get a day of work hope you are feeling better soon.

indigoblue thanks for the mattress info, mine is a really good mattress - I wouldn't be able to afford to replace with one of a similar quality. Think when the time comes I'll just give it a good airing and a hoover over on both sides and be done with it.

sweetbean at your silly 'oh it's harder with two comments'. Sometimes I really wonder what is wrong with some people. The way some people have been toward me when I have been pregnant in the past you'd have thoguht I'd been sent to my death . Anyway it is not neccessarily harder with two IMO, some things are easier and you are more experienced and laid back so it's not half as stressful as having a baby the first time round.

wolverina My two DDs had the option of a moses basket and crib but, even though they were tiny, it didn't suit them and they never slept properly until I moved them into their cotbeds. DD1 went into her cotbed at 2 weeks (she looked so tiny) and DD2 at 1 week. They slept much better in them for some reason. The only benefit I see of moses baskets, cribs etc is that you can fit them in your bedroom more easily but, for me, it was worth cramming the cotbed into our bedroom just for the extra sleep we got as a result.

Lots of sympathy for those suffering from snoring, my DP snores and it?s never bothered me before, but between that and the 20,000 loo trips a night I?m getting no sleep! Grrr

tbh if we weren?t getting our moses basket for free I wouldn?t bother, we?ll be inheriting ours from my sister, she had twins in October and they?re growing out of the baskets already - they were tiny at birth (approx 5lbs). Not sure what we?ll do about a mattress, but I like the idea of airing and hoovering.

I know a couple of mums who didn?t bother with moses baskets, but just put the baby in the cot side ways iyswim, until the LO?s was too big to lie sideways and could be put lengthways. And I was talking to one mum who kept her LO in a travel cot from birth as they are only around £100 instead of £300, but all the travel cots I?ve seen are a long way down, so being short I?d probably end up stuck in it with my feet sticking out and a bad back!

On size and comments, I?ve had a mix of you?re huge and you?re tiny comments so far ? I think it all depends on what you?re wearing and what the other person wants to see. Also I sometimes get the impression they don?t have a clue, but feel they ought to say something about the pregnancy and its the first thing that comes to mind.

bobsmum · 22/01/2008 11:31

YF - we used a travel cot in our room with ds - there was a newborn "bassinet" bit which meant that baby was high up in a hammocky type thing. Made by Graco.

This time we're borrowing a moses basket for the first while until baby is sleeping well enough to share with either dd or ds - probably dd as she doesn't have school in the morning

We still have the cot mattress form the first 2, it was v expensive at the time and still in good nick, but I'll take the top cover off and wash it.
