hotpotmama - many thanks for taking the time to write all that. Much appreciated. I'm trying not to worry about it too much but I am much more worried generally about this one than the last 3 for some reason. Just want to meet him and give lots of cuddles (then put him back for another 3 months or so until he is over colic etc ). The consultant did say that these things are more common in boys than girls.

Glad your DS2 turned out to be well. Children are a constant worry - why do we put ourselves through all this?????? Damn hormones

Trying to think of names now. We had girls names sorted but no boys names - lots of ideas but nothing feels right, think we'll have to see him before deciding. Roll on May....

Happy New Year everyone!!

We spent Hogamany with my parents which was nice and quiet until the fireworks woke ds and dd up several times during the night.

I can understand fireworks at midnight, but 2am and 4am - why????

Now it's 2008 I need to start my baby research in detail.

Although this is no3 we need:

Size 1 nappies and wraps - will probably go for Totsbots FLuffles this time round.
A pram
Change bag
Tens machine!!
dh wants a tummy tub bath thingy
Sling - fabric one - rather than strappy, buckly front carrier.
Nice bf PJs for hospital

I think we've already got everything else, excpet a car which can take 3 children would be a good idea too!

I'm not finding out the sex and wouldn't be allowed to either at our hospital. I'm getting a scan at 30 weeks though - new policy for all previous section mums. I'll be asking the sonographer to steer clear of any bits, just to keep the mystery for just a few weeks longer!

Fleurie76 · 02/01/2008 16:48

Hello and Happy New Year May Mums!
Supposed to be working from home today but frankly have downed tools, there seems to be noone about to email me or give me work anyway!
Duchesofnorksbride - you're not the only one who indulged at Christmas, I am now convinced that I'm having a girl as everytime I had some bubbly, I got loads of kicking and also when we were in the car when the Spice Girls came on the radio - girl power! Not sure about my baby's taste in music but it made me laugh.
Had a midwife appointment in between Christmas and New Year and without thinking wore a dress. On the way there I realised that I would have to hitch it up to have measurements and heartbeat checked and thought 'Oh well, she's seen it all before, I'll have to make a joke about untidy bikini lines and grey pants' However when I got there and walked in, I was introduced to 'Fabio' the young, attractive trainee male midwife who would be doing the measurements and heatbeat!
I've now invested in maternity trousers...

walkingwomb · 02/01/2008 17:01

hi all - haven't been on in yonks as was having a work induced melt down before christmas. don't think i realised how stressed i was until i got home for christmas and spent most of it lying down in a darkened room trying to get away from everyone. Despite that had a lovely time and feel lots more human. Seem to have been sick a lot - with colds and flus - but not at work so everything is good!

There is no 20 week scan were I am but had doctors appointment yesterday which confirmed everything is ticking over okay. Bump grew like crazy over christmas but has slowed down again, thank god. I feel the baby lots very low down, just above were my pubic hair starts. In the bath the other night i noticed that area jumping up and down as it kicked! DH finally felt it too which is lovely.

We are moving house on Saturday. i haven't started to think about baby things at all, but have started to think about teh birth more. I read the lovely ina may book and am feeling much less scared.

Hope everyone is well!

santaspregnantlittlehelper · 02/01/2008 17:03

hi everyone! happy christmas and new year. ds thankfully slept through all the fireworks around us on new years.

i think i said before we are having a nother boy, so everyone i know was wrong, except for dh!

been sales shopping for tiny things (tiny baby or prem size) as we donated all our tiny stuff last time to the new natal unit, as we had to use a load of their clothes after birth as ds was so small! so have got some lovely little cute things and indulged myself a bit unfortunately the next thing we have to spend on is new tyres for the car which are really expensive...not nearly so much fun!

not much else to report here except to say hope everyone is all ok and coby try not to worry if you can. and hope the pox waits turn out to be all ok.

xxx

Fleurie76 · 02/01/2008 17:55

Hi Walkingwomb - what book did you read that made you less scared please!?
Have always been irrationally terrified of childbirth and have been quite proud of keeping a lid on the panic so far! However, anything else to help would be appreciated
Thanks

pregnabrain · 02/01/2008 18:27

Howdy

Had lovely midwife appointment this morning and heard the baby's heart beating like crazy. Am full of now.

I mentioned that I'm feeling all the kicks really low down and she said "ooh, maybe you're having a boy"! I'd LOVE a boy this time so am keeping everything crossed.

Walkingwomb - am getting all the kicks in the same place as you. Much lower down than last time... do you know what you're having?

I've just started Ina May's Guide To Childbirth. It's so lovely and reassuring, but they just seem like such confident, laidback women. I only hope I can be so self-assured. Wish I'd read it before first birth, though. It helps to explain so many of the things you feel during labour. Especially the intensity of it, which is what surprised me most about the experience.

Fleurie76 - I'd definitely recommend reading it. She wrote another one called Spiritual Midwifery, which is also supposed to be amazing. It's all really hippy-ish, so be prepared for women describing their 'bits' as "gates of life" , for example.

Coolmama · 02/01/2008 18:34

Hi all - just got back home from xmas and new year away and am really looking forward to sleeping in my own bed - the holiday was lovely, but home is best!!
Indulged in one or two baby bits for the bump, but I think it's a boy so still have loads of suitable stuff from DS - don't want to be too extravagent, but it seems to be a bit mean to have this poor baby only wear hand-me-downs
coby - just wanted to add that I had exactly the same thing at my 20-week scan (which is also why I think it's a boy!!!), I was quite panicked in the beginning, but both the lovely sonographer at the scan and my consultant and made me promise not to worry. I am seeing the consultant on the 8th of Jan so will get as much info as I can about this all - I guess my main concerns are -

  • antibiotics for such a little baby (I am dead against them uless absolutely necessary)
  • immediate effects post-birth
  • long -term consequences.

He has also suggested a scan at 28 weeks rather than waiting until 32 weeks, and then possibly another further scan before the birth depending on the results. Nothing to be done until then, so how about we both agree to "not worry" together.
Besides, as I'm the mummy who is not immune to chicken pox, am far more freaked out about that!!!
Otherwise, all is good - baby is very active and bump is slowly expanding. Aside from still getting a little tired, I feel really good and so may well hit the sales tomorrow and see if I can find something to wear when we go to Thailand in 3 weeks time!! _ talk about sending my consultant into complete hysterics!!!

mumofk · 02/01/2008 19:54

Fleurie76- something to help with being scares/petrified of the coming out bit-hypnotherapy! DH and I went on hypnobirthing course- the basic premise is to be soooo relaxedit doesn't hurt. Nothing as mad as saying you won't feel it,but discomfort rather than screaming pain- the idea is fear can slow things down (adrenaline isn't a helpful hormone during labour!) and potentially make it more painful, so better get get calmer sooner rather than later.
As someone who reckons they had a 'good' labour last time, but had the shakes so bad couldn't hold baby straight away- from the adrenaline- I'm hopeful it'll be even better. Even if hypnobirthing isn't your thing (and it costs a lot, but worth it IMO) just hypnotherapy to help allay your fears could be useful.
Sorry, did the course early Dec and STILL very impressed- DH fixed his back pain with one of the techniques we learned, and I'm using another for heartburn.
Walkingwomb- GOOD LUCK with your house move! I really couldn't face that at all, so I really hope it goes smoothly.
Whenachildisbob- I'm abolutely taken with fluffles too! DD ( 2 yrs old) is only in nappies at night, but the fluffles are fab if she does wee. I only found them this year, but I'm going to have to get some size 1s for bump. They dry soo quick and are soo cuddly (I know, cuddly napies WTF?!). We just use fleece outers now its not as vital, but we also have a full kit of bambino mios we started out with.
Right, better think about moving, well actually going to bed. This two day working week has really taken it out of me!

iarel · 02/01/2008 20:30

thank you for the welcome! i will definitely go for the 4d scan. bump is much bigger and lower this time around than with DS. he has at last come around to the idea of a sister as "there is such a thing as a pink power ranger"! big sigh of relief as i tried on my maternity trousers for the first time today and not to have diet or detox as new years resolution again has anyone having a c-section had their dates set yet? i had an emergency section last time due to disproportion so have opted for an elective this time, but haven't been told anything yet.

KangaAndRoo · 02/01/2008 20:40

Welcome Fleurie and Iarel!

Happy new year all of you!

Got my 20 wk scan on friday..cant wait. Im a bit over 20wks so hopefully things will be very clear

I had severe tonsilitus again! from xmas day up until new years eve and dd had a low dose of chickenpox! just on her back.

Anywho, I wont be finding out the sex of this one as i didnt with dd but I have an incling of what sex it is lol

take care all x

coby · 02/01/2008 21:05

Coolmama Agreed, not worrying too much about it but the little blighter refused to kick me all day until I just logged on to MN now - that had me worried. I actually went out to the charity shop today and bought some clothes for my little man and all I kept thinking was please be OK so you can wear all this one day. What is worng with me??? I was soooo laid back with my DDs - to the point of being horizontal!

Anyway, he now has four items of clothes to wear, going to be expensive getting lots of clothes again but tbh I'm so bored of pink . Might seems a bit early to be buying clothes but then I bought his nappies at 8 wks pg then thought I was tempting bad fate. It was more down to a bad nappy buying habit I am trying to break myself of.
Talking of nappies whenachildisbob have you thought of checking out the new Little Lamb version of the fluffle? They are apparently a little bit thiner fitting than tots bots fluffes but have all the other good bits fluffles have (only velcro fitting though). There are some going cheap new on ebay right now if you are interested. Got myself some very cheap bamboozles for 'nugget' not that I don't have enough nappies for 6 children already .

Right...enough rambling from me - off to bore people on a different thread now

walkingwomb · 02/01/2008 21:55

Hi Fleurie, I am reading Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth - the same one as pregnabrain. It is very touchy feely, but I think you need that when you are going to give birth. Also has some great pictures - like a baby coming out face first! I got it out of the library, but am going to buy it.

I was with my sister when she was in labour 4 years ago. she had prepared for a homebirth and so had done lots of active birth classes etc. She couldn't have a home birth in the end as my niece arrived three weeks early. However my sister coped with labour really well and wasn't scared , it made a huge impression on me. So I am going to the same classes and trying to have the same positive outlook as her.

I have found my yoga class to be really good too as the teacher is very empowering. Where abouts are you Fleurie?

pregnabrain - i don't know what I am having. was convinced I was having a girl but then i had a series of very real dreams where the baby was a boy in every one. So now leaning towards thinking its a boy. will be really happy with whatever. I take it you are not finding out beforehand?

mumofk - you make hypnobirthing sound great! i looked into for the positive mental stuff, but as you say it is a wee bit pricey.

Thanks for the good luck wishes over teh house move! It is a bummer I can't really help but as DH pointed out i can still clean!

babylove21 · 02/01/2008 22:58

Hi All, been floating round for a few weeks and only just found this forum.
My baby is due May 13th.
I had my 20 weeks scan on new years eve and today saw the mw.
Apart from a low lying placenta, everything is as normal... whatever normal may be lol.
This is my third dc but 17 years since my ds.

Mitchell81 · 03/01/2008 09:19

iarel, yes i have my section booked for the 12th May, got it at my consultant appointment at 12 weeks.

Welcome babylove 21 and anyone else that I have missed.
I have my scan on monday will be over 21 weeks, looking forward to seeing baby again, won't find out sex till 4d private scan at 26 weeks.

Just got back from a 4 week holiday in South Africa and now enjoying the cold weather back home.

Glad everyone had a good christmas and happy new year and all feeling better.

sweetbean · 03/01/2008 10:21

Hi everyone and welcome all newbies

michell81 where abouts in SA did you go my DP is from there (its beautiful isn't it!!!!)

Just wanted to add a quick note about the labour topic. I cried nearly everyday when i was pregnant with DD i was so terrified!!!! and when it came down to it i was fine !! its a long story but i ended up pushing her out in the car on the way to the hospital and she was born 10 mins after we arrived i only had gas and air in thoughts last 10 mins and no other pain relief at all!OH and id been in labour for 20 hrs by the time she was born !!!!!
I'm just praying that i can cope OK this time as i consider my birth with DD to have been Totally amazing and a very positive experience !!!!

santaspregnantlittlehelper · 03/01/2008 10:47

hi everyone can't add anything about labour as ds was emergency section last time. no section date yet as it's a bit of a moving target - worst case is 22 feb, bet case is about 2 weeks later!

i envy you all coming back from / going on holiday - i am not allowed to travel out of the country so am missing a long weekend in NY at the start of feb...

not much else to say except pmsl at Fabio! we have no attractive trainees at our hospital AND its a teaching hospital. and no good looking consultants either!

Fleurie76 · 03/01/2008 13:09

Hi all,
Walkingwomb and Pregnabrain thanks for the book recommendations I'll take a look at the Ina May Gaskin one and let you know how I get on!

mumofk, I had a look at a couple of hypnobirthing threads and I'm going to do some research on it. I'm usually a real old sceptic on anything like hypnotism but I'm convinced that I absolutely have to get on top of the fear when in labour or I'll just lose it so a positive mental attitude is what's needed. Thanks for the tip

sweetbean - thanks for your story, I'm glad I'm not the only one for whom the 'b' word is such an issue but very glad to see you had such a positive experience

walkingwomb - good luck with the house move, I would stand around looking helpless and delicate personally and let the (presumably male) removal people do all the work - perhaps if you are lucky they will be the same men that didn't give up their seats for Mrstresshead!

JingleBellsRoady · 03/01/2008 13:28

hello everyone, welcome to babylove21! I thought i had an age gap, my DS will be 13 in a month!
i'm totally knocked out and going to have a sleep now. anyone else not having the promised rush of energy and 'blooming' in the second trimester?
JBR xxx
PS Had my scan yesterday and it is a girl! DS was not impressed...

santaspregnantlittlehelper · 03/01/2008 14:00

WW also meant to add you must be very very very careful (as far as dh should be concerned!) with inhaling any toxic fumes from cleaning products, so unless he would like to shell out for ecover or method brand cleaning products he should be doing the cleaning too.....
