Can they tell the sex at the 12 week scan? Or is it at the 20week one?

LyraShaeLilly · 08/02/2021 16:33

I will be finding out the sex, I am a planner so would like to know,

PurplePansy05 · 08/02/2021 16:50

@LyraShaeLilly Usually at 20 weeks, some private tests allow to find out sooner (whuch us how I know). I don't know if everyone is feeling this way but to me now weeks are going faster, it's crazy to think I have my 20 week scan next month! xx

notinthestarsigns · 08/02/2021 16:55

We will probably find out the sex although I don’t think we would fully believe it until they are here given our consultant told us the wrong sex at nearly 17 weeks last time! Don’t want to scare anyone and it is rare that they get it wrong but scans are never 100 percent and there is more of a risk of it being wrong the earlier it is.

lucyrp · 08/02/2021 16:57

@biscuitcat thank you 🥰

@MrsB2019x hope it doesn't mean by baby is going to be awkward 🤣🤣

I don't think we will find out gender as 3 people who live in the same small area as me have found out it's a girl then given birth to a boy so not overly sure on it 😂

notinthestarsigns · 08/02/2021 16:59

Maybe it’s not quite as rare as I thought it was then @lucyrp!

Whatshouldbemyusername · 08/02/2021 17:08

@PurplePansy05 aaw. Beautiful.

@biscuitcat yellow animal farm theme sounds like such a cool theme!

I think I will start planning once I have my scan. At the moment it’s all just abit on hold - when the dating scan is done next I will feel more relaxed for sure x

Alittlexmasmagic · 08/02/2021 17:19

@lucyrp @notinthestarsigns a bit like being told at your 12 week private scan there's just one baby and three days later at the NHS scan, finding out there's two 🙈 x

lucyrp · 08/02/2021 17:20

@Alittlexmasmagic @notinthestarsigns omg what?!😅

notinthestarsigns · 08/02/2021 17:21

Not something you would think they would miss @Alittlexmasmagic!

HangryDoughnut · 08/02/2021 17:54

We're not finding out the sex either, although it's 2nd time around. We didn't find out last time either and loved not knowing, it was really fun getting people's guesses and speculating about who they were going to be!

DeusEx · 08/02/2021 17:58

@BertieBotts

Weird. I guess my advice is wrong then :P

I wonder what is so different about UK scan machines that they need a full bladder whereas it's not a thing that's asked anywhere else in the world??

It is asked here in India! Otherwise they press down REALLY hard which is not comfortable (I didn’t drink enough before my 8 week scan....)

Exciting times for all those finding out genders! It’s illegal to even ask here - my UK based grandmother is furious that she can’t start planning knitting accordingly....

DeusEx · 08/02/2021 18:00

Lovely nursery ideas too... I live in rented accommodation at the moment as I’m an ex-pat working in India, but moving back to the UK in early 2021. So no decorating for us for now :(

PurplePansy05 · 08/02/2021 18:35

I am having horrendous breast pain, second day in a row, comes on in the eve. It's as if someone was stabbing my breasts through the nipple, a stabbing/shooting sensation that then covers the rest of my breasts, particularly the left one. My right one is also tender but not as bad as my left one. DH said they feel very full and big 😳 My nipples have also turned a bit purple/hint of blue now which isn't what I expected, I thought they might slowly go dark brown. Any advice for horrible breast pain, ladies? xx

Alittlexmasmagic · 08/02/2021 19:05

@PurplePansy05 no advice really, my boobs were a total no go zone for DH when I was expecting DS. They say with BF to try cabbage leaves to cool inflammation so might be worth trying. Also try sleeping in a bralette or similar just to give a little support. Ibuprofen isn't advised but paracetamol is fine to take if the pain is too much x

@HangryDoughnut that bit was fun. We didn't tell anyone names either. It was lovely knowing that when he was born, only we knew him really. That said I was off my tits on everything by that point so couldn't have cared if he came out with three legs and covered in hair 😂

BertieBotts · 08/02/2021 19:46

I love bright coloured clothes for babies and often find the boys' section is more "unisex" than the girls. That said I have put my boys in girls' clothing when they're too young to care. Not dresses or anything, but trousers, t-shirts, etc.

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 08/02/2021 19:53

Just some examples of clothes I think are fairly unisex but not white/beige.

The yellow t-shirt is from the girls' section. Jungle trousers from that outfit are H&M, I find H&M stuff is often gender neutral. I got that from the boys' section but their website often mixes the two sections up.

Bright bugs sleepsuit was from Boots, I love their stuff as well.

Fox sweater was from C&A, boys' section but I think lovely for either. Those grey trousers with mice are from the girls' section, H&M I think.

Omg @PurplePansy05 me too! On Saturday I was out in the cold for a few minutes and the pain in my boobs was unbearable. Since then I've had stabbing pains in the left one, like someone is stabbing me through the nipple with a knitting needle. I was going to call my midwife tomorrow, but glad I'm not alone!

BertieBotts · 08/02/2021 20:11

That sounds like Reynaud's phenomenon - vasospasm of the nipple.

Now I've googled it, it can cause the blueish colour as well. It's not harmful, it is treatable so defo speak to your midwife. It can be mistaken for thrush but it's v unlikely to be thrush if you haven't been on antibiotics and especially as you don't currently have a breastfeeding baby so don't have any source of cross infection.

Whatshouldbemyusername · 08/02/2021 20:19

@BertieBotts what a cutie!

And yes on the topics of boobs mine are killing me too. It was ok then for the last 2 days it’s gotten really bad and somehow feel more heavier!

LyraShaeLilly · 08/02/2021 20:23

@DeusEx
It's such a shame that it's illegal to find out the gender in India, I know the gender doesn't matter as a healthy baby is what's important but the reason for why it's made illegal in India is just so sad.

@PurplePansy05
Yes me to - they are so sore and I have been told that you shouldn't wear underwired bras in pregnancy so now I have no support and when I brush past something and accidentally catch my boobs it's so sore even with a bra on as Im so used to the wired/padded ones. Anyone have advice on this, I'm really struggling with this, is it true that you can't wear padded or underwired ones? I can't really understand why I know it's something to do with the shape changing, but in a non padded/wired one the shape is triangle and in a padded its round? Surely round is the correct shape!! My nipples and surround are very pink/purple also.

I finished work early today and began looking at cot furniture then got into the minefield of cot bedding, so I had a nap instead!!!

Opalfruits2 · 08/02/2021 20:36

Hi all! Glad to have found this thread at last. 14+6 here, 1st baby. Congratulations wishing you all the best.

Here is our 12wk scan, as soon as I saw the face/skull I thought BOY - does anyone have any guesses? Grin of course baby is a wriggly bum and put hands to face for the shot...

March 16th we find out. It’s all going incredibly fast

BertieBotts · 08/02/2021 20:41

You can wear underwires as long as they fit well and don't put pressure on your breast tissue. Pressure on the breast tissue can cause milk blockages which can cause an infection called mastitis, very nasty and unpleasant. But IME, you are uncomfortable way before mastitis develops. I have had it once where it was a surprise but to be fair I'd had a dull ache in my boob I'd been ignoring.

OP posts:
LyraShaeLilly · 08/02/2021 20:55

@BertieBotts

Thats great thanks, can you get mastitis in pregnancy even before beginning to BF?

Whatshouldbemyusername · 08/02/2021 21:02

@LyraShaeLilly it’s illegal in India to check the sex of the baby because it’s understandable. In some cultures having a girl is looked at as a burden - so people who are not too wealthy/ poor have daughters and then you have to pay hefty dowries for the daughters in some cultures when they get married so many people used to check the sex of the baby and when they find out it’s a girl, they abort it. It’s different cultures but I do understand the logic behind it.

Also like you I prefer underwired bras - at night I wear a bralette though and it’s so comfy. However during the day I do need a good supporting bra. A friend of mine told me that breasts will keep changing throughout pregnancy but after week 18 is the best time to buy maternity bras as you will more or less be that cup size - so I haven’t really invested much in bras yet. Am still waiting abit.

@Opalfruits2 beautiful scan! Congratulations to you too!
