Jenswish · 06/11/2007 16:55

Its an option, I'm just worried about the length of time it'd take to do it.

Am just looking on learn direct's website to see what qual's I need. Also if there is a way to do it from home (if that makes sense)

mixedmama · 06/11/2007 17:01

What about becoming a doula or is it definitely MW that interests you?

Jenswish · 06/11/2007 17:03

I'm just looking and noticed there is a midwife support worker (don't know what that is yet) Whats a doula?

mixedmama · 06/11/2007 17:05

Support worker could be a foot in the door. A doula is like emotional support. People hire you to help them through labour and anxities before hand. You dont actually deliver the baby or anything. TBH the support worker sounds like a really good option, would be able to see if it really is something you want to do.

Jenswish · 06/11/2007 17:08

I've just had a quick look and there are no exact qualifications but they recommend getting NVQ Level 2/3 in health. Plus if its in a multi lingual area to learn another language. I'm thinking that seeing as I'm on the border of Wales, I might try learning Welsh and this NVQ (depending on how much knowledge my brain can soak)

mixedmama · 06/11/2007 17:15

That sounds like a good start Jenwish.

madmouse · 06/11/2007 17:17

Jenswish, not sure about NVQ and Welsh and a new baby all at once. NVQ is quite demanding with a portfolio of practical work to be completed. I would forget about Welsh for a bit . Make sure you research financial support too!

Jenswish · 06/11/2007 17:23

Just had a look through and the NVQ would take 2/3 years PLUS i'd have to get a job as a midwife support worker first.

Also looked at Welsh (was thinking I could be a call centre agent or something like that) and it'll take years to get that too.

Wish I had all the time in the world. Looks like i'm back to being office worker for abit.

mixedmama · 06/11/2007 17:25

I would like a career change but dont really have any aspiration to be in a certain career IYKWIM. I have been considering environment change tho in a big way for after the baby.

Local Authority (flexitime etc)
School PA (hols etc)
Doctors receptionist (with a view to training locally as med sec and perhaps moving to Harley Street type practice down the line) Plus they are normally so rude I would like to show them how it is done.

Not really a career change but certainly would like to be close to home. Really want to want to get up for work.

mixedmama · 06/11/2007 17:26

Jenwish - is it not feesible for you to spend the 3 years doing it?? I know I couldnt take time out and retrain for anything properly as we wouldnt be able to finance it. What would hold you back?

Jenswish · 06/11/2007 17:29

We wouldn't be able to afford not having my income coming in so I couldn't afford the 3 years off (Full time courses etc) Plus with DP working nights we'll have trouble getting someone to watch the baby (DP is well against nurseries etc)

I've just had a look at a court reporter job (i've got quick typing speeds to its a start) takes 2 years normally but it's home based learning so I can shortern it to the 1 year.

susiemj · 06/11/2007 17:38

Sounds exciting Jenswish! Where do you live on the border? I am by the sea in Aberyswyth. Glad you're off till the baby comes. I am too. I don't think you'll get bored - but you might spend too much money [looks guiltily away.] Fingers crossed for tomorrow, anyway though it sounds like you're better off in exciting pastures new!

Happy Birthday Gingeme - hope you're being spoiled rotten.

Battymama - sorry DD is ill and for other ill DC

My hat is off to those of you (Ayreshire, mixedmama, battymama, beller and all) still working. I don't know how much I could do even if I was well. I seem to be on sleep overdrive at the moment, though hyperemesis seems still slowly on the mend - I'm still managing to get out for a walk every day - although what would usually take me 20 minutes takes me at least an hour. On the little hill up our road I have to stop about every 10 paces - feel like a right old woman!
Plus I am huge! I keep getting the 'not long to go' question. Well yes, actually - ten weeks!

Awen and Madmouse - glad about MW appointments. Sorry about DH off to Japan. I missed the bit about your results AWen, but a similar thing Ithink happened to me - I was waiting 3 weeks for results, then found out they'd been sitting on someone's desk for 2 and a half weeks. grrr.

Good for you Beller! Am very at delicious food.

Off to do some more curling up... Have a nice evening.

Jenswish · 06/11/2007 17:52

I live in Wrexham... Nicely on the border (chav town) hahaha. Wish I was further into Wales, I prefer the welsh hills and mountains than this crappy flat stuff.

I'm off to get some shreddies, my stomach is all yucky and it's about all I can eat today.

MamaMaiasaura · 06/11/2007 17:54

Jenswish - i did my nursing training as it wasnt at degree level i got fully funded bursary and they help with childcare costs etc. With midwifery it is at degree level so you dont get the funding.

Have ordered chinese tonight (I am sooo lazy and tired!) and been invited to watch my football team tonight with my mum. I am just far too tired to go tho so dp going instead.

Amani · 07/11/2007 08:21

Morning all,

Hope you all are well.

Went to see m/w yesterday as I wasn't feeling right, and found out I've got a urine infection, so onto the antibiotics and cranberry juice now!! Plus she found traces of blood (?!) and something else that sounded like 'Loucozade' in my sample so she's sent it off to labs for testing as she thinks there is another sort of underlying infection there. Got me mega worried, but she knows what a worrier I am, so didn't give much away apart from saying we'll deal with it when the results come back. Plus found out my bp is high (which explains the blurry visions and migraines which I put down to contact lens issues and due to lack of sleep). Been told to take some time off work to recuperate, so off this afternoon and for the rest of the week.

Thanks to Bettymama for remembering me. Must get work done so I can shoot off home early today...

By the way my last working date is 7th Dec, stil aiming for a 22nd Dec baby though....

Morning...

Gosh it is quiet this morning.

gingeme · 07/11/2007 09:30

Morning everyone
Hope the anti biotics kick in soon Amani.
Thankyou for your birthday wishes yesterday. Had a lovely day and yes I was spoiled by my lovely dh. He even bought a small birthday cake which my boys helped me to blow the candles on.
Thats about it for today. Hope everyone is well. Have a good day xxx

Amani · 07/11/2007 09:31

Gingme - what did your DH get you?

OP posts:
madmouse · 07/11/2007 09:34

Morning all

I think there should be an icon for [sleepdeprived], something with bags and half closed eyes. I thought I would have a great night after seeing mw yesterday, but kept on waking, dh had coughing fits, lo had an internal refurbishment going on with skips and lorries from what it felt like and I just could not get comfy. End of moan .

Amani - high bloodpressure+headaches+blurry vision = definitely signal to take it very easy indeed!! So feet up, lots of sleep and try not to stress!

Bettymamma · 07/11/2007 09:34

Morning everyone

Take it easy Amani. Get what you can done this morning and then forget about it all when you leave this afternoon. Sounds like you need some rest.

Jenswish/Mixedmama - discussions on new career has been getting me inspired. I think its time I looked into doing something slightly more worth while in life rather than marketing. Have always fancied being a nurse/midwife or something like that but knew we couldn't afford to go down to 1 income whilst I trained. I may have a little look on the net today to see what it says about it all.

Susiemj - enjoy this time when you have nothing to do. The daily walks sound lovely. I keep getting the not long to go comments now as well. My dad asked me if they had got my dates right!

Mixedmama - good idea to have an 'environment' career change - something more child friendly. How did ds sleep last night? My dh persuaded dd to sleep in her own bed last night (I was at yoga). I was amazed! Maybe I should stay out more often.

Bettymamma · 07/11/2007 09:36

It's queit and then we all pile in together at the same time!!

Gingeme - sounds a nice day. Am hoping my dh was kidding when he said he couldn't get me anything for my birthday on Monday because we needed to save...!!?

Madmouse - sorry to hear about the bad nights sleep.

mixedmama · 07/11/2007 09:47

Bettymama - morning. Marketing does sound interesting tho. DS had a bit of a bad night again, not too bad, but mainly down to DH coming in and waking him up grrrr. He wasnt actually awake tho just open his eyes move position and then back to sleep. Of course this meant that I hardly slept tho. Glad DD seems to be on the mend.

Amani · 07/11/2007 10:02

Cheers guys, you're all so lovely going home in a bit, can't wait to catch up on some much needed sleep.

susiemj · 07/11/2007 10:14

Amani - sorry about the infection. Glad you're going home. Don't do the hoovering!

Bettymama - I just realised I've been getting your name wrong - sorry!

It's a day of things arriving today so was forced out of bed early to accept parcels. An unexpected male friend turned up to help DH with a housey thing so, half of Aberystwyth have seen me in my dressing gown this morning again. Slept ok (only up three times I think) but feel completely knackered. Anyone else just really tired. May be the change of season - we've had stomach bugs here.

Bought cotbed last night on the internet. Decided ona tuttibambini. I was really tempted by the one you got Awen, but I'd said early on that I wanted one with a drop side, so DH overruled me saying I had to have 'exactly what I wanted'. I am truly blessed in my DH!

Tired wave to everyone - off to tidy my house AFTER everyone in Aber has seen it in a state....

MrsMcJnr · 07/11/2007 10:40
