Can't believe it. Just got my BFP today and by my reckoning baby should be due 1st July.
Is there anyone else out there?

Good luck OITSM and expat for tomorrow x

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 20:26

thanks, folks!

i have to get up at 6 to make this one!

sweetkitty · 21/11/2007 20:30

do you have to go to Paisley?

sweetkitty · 21/11/2007 20:30

do you have to go to Paisley?

sweetkitty · 21/11/2007 20:30

sorry

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 20:31

yep.

a little over an hour and a half away.

sweetkitty · 21/11/2007 20:33

I thought Paisley would have been hours away for you, bit of a trek for a scan I feel moaning about a 10 minute drive for mine. Is DH going with you and the girls?

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 20:53

it's wicked, wicked far, especially for a person who is in labour. ridiculously, dangerously far, especially if you have to go alone if you have no one but your DH to look after teh children.

it is the closest place with maternity services.

even women from as far away as Oban are expected to travel to Paisley for scans and for consultant-led delivery.

i'm going alone.

it's too early to wake the girls for.

sweetkitty · 21/11/2007 21:11

That is shocking I remember hearing something on the news about them cutting maternity services to rural areas, so you would be expected to travel at least 90 minutes in labour thats disgusting. Some labours aren't that long especially with third babies, they probably want to induce everyone at 38 weeks or something.

Shame you have to go yourself, when I went for my scan they were I was there on my own, erm some of us don't have childcare. That's part of the reason I had a homebirth with DD2 so DP could be there.

But anyway theres not much we can do about it, will be thinking of you tomorrow x

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 21:21

90 minutes?

they make people travel there for Oban. that's at least 2 hours, and recently, the main road through was closed for a fortnight.

they were having to chopper everyone to hospital.

i'm sure that was a real money saver.

i'm not bothered about going alone.

i went alone to all my ones with DD2 as well, because i also didn't have childcare.

i even had to go alone when hte midwife couldn't find DD2's heartbeat when she was 25 weeks along.

if i ever had to have an induction or csection i'd make sure it was 38 weeks because i've had both girls at 38 weeks+2 and 38 weeks+3 days.

MINNIE1 · 21/11/2007 21:38

Expat,
It's a joke what your having to deal with, NHS have alot to answer to... Will be thinking of you in the morning.

I got my scan apt for the 18th of Dec! Not happy.. I have a history of MC, Bleeding during pregnancy. I only ask for one scan b4 12 wks and no can't have it!!

Welcome to all the newbie's

Still feeling rough and tired....

PTIYPASI
Loved the joke, i cracked a smile

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 21:40

minnie, can you buy an early scan privately?

in edinburgh, you could get one for only £40.

i'm pretty pissed off and dead worried about maternity 'services' around here.

like i said, they got sued big time by a gourock couple a few years ago whose baby daughter, their 4th child, died as a result of not having proper services nearby.

and gourock is far closer to paisley than we are.

sweetkitty · 21/11/2007 21:41

Can you imagine being heavily pregnant and from Oban you would be s* yourself. Everyone who can should book in for homebirths but unfortunately not everyone can

I just took DD1 along to all my appointments for DD2, chances are this time we will all have to traipse along. Three friends have actually offered to take them for my scan next week I was in tears as no one usually would have offered (fell sorry for myself emoticon) but I think I have made some good friends up here now.

sweetkitty · 21/11/2007 21:43

No wonder so many women "fake" mc symptoms to get scans I cannot blame them when you have had a previous mc you are terrified for the first 12 weeks.

I suppose I am lucky in that the EPAS told me to phone them next time I was pregnant and book in direct (usually need GPs referral).

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 21:44

homebirths are great.

BUT, if something went wrong and you were that far from consultant care, you'd be very, very screwed.

or worse.

i wouldn't hesitate to go for one in Edinburgh.

but here? thinking about it. no way.

even by chopper, you're looking at about 40 minutes.

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 21:45

minnie
GP Plus, HealthcareNow, or BUPA are some of the places that offer scans privately.

sweetkitty · 21/11/2007 21:48

Fair enough expat I was reassured hospital was 10 mins away but in your case and others like you I would be booking in for an induction just incase, you cannot take risks.

What a terrible situation to be in, to have to have an induction as you are scared you won't make the hospital in time

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 21:51

i think we may have to move if this pregnancy is viable, sweet.

i would never book an induction unless necessary. it makes you contractions far, far worse and painful.

I know what a decision to make though induction and be safe or stay at home and chance you will make it in time.

I hope things work out for you though whatever that may be, rest easy tonight (hard I know) x

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 22:03

but it's not really a decision, sweet. they don't offer induction unless you need it.

they do offer home birth, but that's at your own risk knowing you're very far away from consultant led care if it becomes necessary.

what you can also do is call an ambulance to take you. you have to after the ferry stops running - it's on 24 hour standby for emergencies.

they will also chopper you at the community midwife's call.

on the whole, however, i've found the staff at Paisley VERY helpful towards us rural residents.

a midwife phoned me after the appointment was made to take some details and discuss symptoms with me, and then set up the appointment with the OB/GYN afterwards.

she said to go ahead and bring an overnight bag in my car just in case the consultant felt i needed more treatment.

sfxmum · 21/11/2007 22:17

welcome hatrick

really shocking hearing about the services, unfortunately no matter where you are the lack of proper maternity services is quite noticeable, my sister gave birth 16&14 yrs ago in London and the service she got was miles better than mine 2yrs ago.

most of my friends agree that maternity services have really gone down in the last 7yrs or so.

I have to fork out £150 for an early scan and I am thinking of hiring a doula for the birth last time things could have gone very badly indeed I think we just got lucky.

sorry about the long post having an emotional day

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 22:18

whoa, hatrick!

welcome!

sfxmum · 22/11/2007 09:36
