Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

CL - I'm in the fortunate position of being a first-timer but with lots of friends with kids who have done it loads of different ways - some with a very strict routine, and some with a completely child-led approach - and I've discovered that a person who believes in one will never believe in the other approach. As turtle said, carnage inevitably follows... This weekend, my MIL gave me her three best pieces of advice - put your feet up whenever you are sat down to avoid varicose veins, start using stretch mark cream now, and ignore child-rearing advice from books or people and just do it my way.

I think I know just enough about each approach from watching my friends that I'll just try and wing it and pick bits from each that seem to work rather than religiously reading through a particular book and then becoming a slave to it. My main focus is that I would like to get the baby to be a fairly good sleeper relatively quickly (DH and I do not function together happily when tired, so a sleeping baby will be a marriage saver) - and I'm willing to try anything to get that!

modsaluk · 25/09/2007 13:24

Goo afternoon ladies, called my midwife this morning and she told me to book into my doctors and get them to refer me to the Early Pregnancy Unit, they have booked me in for another scan tommorrow morning. So another night of worry.

I had no more blood, just the little bit last night and no pain so trying to be positive.

timmyinatizzy · 25/09/2007 13:45

Glad to hear that you have not seen anymore blood Mods. I know it'll be hard but try and relax tonight, have a nice bath, snuggle up in your favourite pj's and get a good nights sleep. The morning will come round quicker than you think.

ClaphamLauren · 25/09/2007 13:58

Definitely take the advice about stretch mark cream to heart... I've been getting through a bottle of Clarins Tonic Oil once every two weeks. My skin is not going to get stretch marks!!

Try not to worry about bleeding mods, especially if it is brown as it's probably just some old blood falling out. I had some brown blood upon wiping a few days ago but just put it down to sex and exercise shaking some old stuff out It's obviously highly likely that I'm wrong of course and maybe I should have been more bothered about it but chance of miscarriage is very very low at this stage and I certainly don't think you're being "punished".

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you all for the advice about NOT discussing parenting techniques unless I want a riot on my hands. I'll start to practice nodding and smiling serenely!

spugs · 25/09/2007 16:24

mods - sounds like its all fine. i had a tiny ammount of brown bleeding with dd1 at about 9 weeks and it was fine.

hi to everyone else

piggyp · 25/09/2007 17:17

Good luck tomorrow Modsaluk.
The c4 prog sounds interesting, but I am a bit scared by the idea of the person who can't be named. Is it Voldemort?
Has anyone felt LOs moving yet? I have been feeling a sort of soft wooshing a couple of times a day - but it could just be wind!

3madboys · 25/09/2007 17:36

will be thinking of you ((MOD))

i have an app with the midwife tomorrow so will get to hear babys heartbeat i am 18wks and either have loads of wind or can feel the baby moving, still no bump yet tho, iwas asking in the chemist about floroxatide? that iron supplement thats meant to be good and she wanted to know what i wanted to take it, when i said i was 18 wks preg she was like "really" etc as have some of the mums at school etc, but i cant be that unusual?

ClaphamLauren · 25/09/2007 17:51

I am 16weeks on Friday (so 15+4) and due on 14th March seems crazy that there is already someone who is 18 weeks! In fact, I can't even work it out mathematically.

Have I got my maths wrong!? Bugger. I can definitely start to see a bump emerging and someone offered me a seat on the tube the other morning. Woo!

3madboys · 25/09/2007 19:09

i am due right at the end of feb, origionally i was due the 5th march, but at my scan they found out i was further along than i thought but as all my babies have been nearly three weeks late, this one will still turn up in march and i like the march thread so i am staying put but yes its scary, i have my 20wk scan on the 12th oct, i cant believe i am nearly half way already

skidoodle · 25/09/2007 19:16

good luck tomorrow mods.

I'm glad to know the name of SHE WHO CANNOT BE NAMED. I was getting a bit confused. Even I've heard of that lady.

I don't have any very strong opinions on such matters, but my mother and her 4 sisters are all total earth mothers and although all very nice women, it's fascinating (and a little scary) to hear them talk about their SIL (my aunt, who's great) because she didn't do things the way they all did. AND she had more kids than any of them, which definitely didn't help .

It's sad that people get so het up about such discussions, because if they could be more discussy and less fighty I (as a first timer) would find them quite useful and interesting. But I bow to your experience turtle. If you say it's not worth it, it's not worth it.

I don't really see how creams are going to do anything to help stretch marks. Aren't they just a total lie like cellulite creams?

Speaking of skin, is anyone else more itchy than usual? My skin seems to be super sensitive. If I shave my legs and then wear sheer tights it's maddening. I'm almost glad for the colder weather as it means I can wear skirts again.

skidoodle · 25/09/2007 19:19

OMG when I read back what I'd posted about wearing skirts I thought "oh, now they'll all know I'm a woman"

had any of you guessed?

my1stbaby · 25/09/2007 19:26

Hello ladies. Just a quick post as am rushing to get home. news at work today. Found that I will lose my job with one of the company I'm working at as they are merging with another. I have 2 jobs, so at least have one job to fall back on. Been a rollercoaster of a day.

Anyway, just managed to log on and catch up on new and wanted to wish modsaluk good luck for tomorrow.

x

onemore · 25/09/2007 19:30

I've been a bit more itchy too, on my legs mainly but it might have something to do with the fact that I've been wearing socks to bed cause my feet have been cold!!

Oh and with the stretch mark cream I definately DON'T think it's a myth - It keeps your skin soft and stretchy and so will stretch easier when your bump grows.

And think about it do you really want to risk it! and poss get loads ...then you'd be 'why oh why didn't I use the cream??!!'
I'm just aiming on not getting any MORE!!

tori32 · 25/09/2007 19:34

Hi all

modsaluk hope you are OK and good luck for the scan.

LOL turtle I have got 1 dd, 20mths. IME the Gina Ford routine was the best thing that happened in our household. Found it when dd was 6wks. (If only I had read it pre birth I could have had sleep from 4 weeks!!!) As it was it took her until 8 weeks (dream fed at 1030pm while still asleep!)7-7 since.

skidoodle · 25/09/2007 20:28

onemore - glad I'm not the only one with itchiness. not glad you're itchy too, just reassured not to be alone iyswim.

I'm loath to pay for expensive costmetic treatments "just in case" - that's how they get you. I'll do some research and see what I can find out. I think it's a good idea to use an oil to massage into your skin for some other reason, although I can't remember what it was. Plus it might be nice, so perhaps I'll go for it.

tori32 · 25/09/2007 20:39

I have to say that last time I did use bio oil and can safely say it made no difference at all- still got the silvery blighters!!

derah · 25/09/2007 20:46

Sniggers, OMG, Skidoodle is a WOMAN!! Erk!

monthlymayhem · 25/09/2007 21:04

Hi Ladies

Glad you named the unnamed one as I also thought you meant Voldemort and wondered where in the films I'd missed an argument about baby routines!!

I've started using cocoa butter, just the body shop one nothing expensive, in the hope it avoids stretch marks. If anything else it smells nice and I usually never pamper myself with creams and lotions, so quite like the novelty. My friend who had her baby a few weeks ago religiously applied oil twice a day and thought she'd got away without any until 39 weeks when they apparently appeared overnight

Good luck tomorrow MOD, and glad to hear all turned out well Paranoid1stimer

turtle23 · 25/09/2007 22:27

Tori (takes brave pill) I am with you. Am currently on 15th Gina Ford baby and there's no swaying me.
By the way all, that evil witch on the baby show tonight was not the kind of routine I would agree with. Gina Ford at least allows you to have feelings!
Those of you who do the hiding of GF books..I'm sorry we are nice people too I promise!

Oh and yes I am ITCHY too. Maddening.

HolidaysQueen · 25/09/2007 23:05

my1st - sorry to hear about your job. I hope you get some redundancy money and/or that you can sort something out soon. fingers crossed

re stretch marks, i've heard that the reason celebs all have elective caesareans 2 weeks before their due date is because stretch marks often happen in those last few days...

I'm not sure how much cream will help but I bought the Palmers Cocoa Butter stuff and MIL got me some Sanctuary mum to be body oil so I've got plenty to keep me going! In a few weeks, I'm going to get DH to start rubbing it in at night. Figured that it might be nice for him when baby starts moving as he/she will be able to say hello to dad

DH sat on sofa while I type suggesting girls' names to me - I like a few but some he seems to like are terrible!!!!

HolidaysQueen · 25/09/2007 23:07

I've got itchy skin too, partic after a bath or after shaving legs. It can be due to dry skin, which is a side effect of pregnancy hormones I think - all the more reason to pamper ourselves with lovely lotions and potions I think!

merryberry · 26/09/2007 09:31

hoping to hear good news form mod later today. my1stbaby, i hope you are feeling positive about the changes after a nights sleep?

watched bringing up baby, and dp and i are wondering how come we feel like we did all 3 approaches equally??

ClaphamLauren · 26/09/2007 10:18

I definitely feel that the stretch mark oils and creams are worth it. The Clarins tonic oil and stretch mark cream range is excellent and have heard loads of really positive stories about it. My Mum owns a few beauty salons - including a Clarins one - so thankfully get it free or very discounted which is a good job as I am getting through so much of it.

One of the clients there got through 30 bottles during her pregnancy, a total cost of £750ish... That is kinda crazy. I do it twice a day and also use the tonic shower gel, moisturiser and exfoliator however I am really scared of stretch marks!!

I really enjoyed the programme last night, I am drawn towards the routine method but I wouldn't want my baby in bed by 7pm as I wouldn't see it when I am back at work. I'm hoping you can have a bit of flexibility on exact timings.

e14mum · 26/09/2007 10:18

Oooh... I'm itchy too! From about 5 weeks have had eczema on my legs that is driving me crazy!! I scratch it in my sleep and DH wakes me up to tell me to stop.

Well, I went to gp for blood results yesterday- and they had lost them! The midwife who took the bloods at my booking visit had apparently put them in the wrong box! Grrr... So I had to have them all again and go back next week to get results. Why it took them 5 weeks to notice this, I have no idea...
Ok, mild rant over. I'll be less grumpy now.

On a happier note, some mini packs of biscuits appeared in the office yesterday while I was at gps, and my collegue took it upon herself to stash some in my desk drawer for me! Wasn't that kind? (Must be because I'm constantly complaining about being hungry!!)
