Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

The Samsonite travel cot comes in 2 sizes, one of which is a bit larger and heavier and is about £50. We had the smaller one, and honestly would have been lost without it. Thought about buying the larger one once ds was 8 months and had outgrown the littler version (ok, other peoples babies might last until they're 1 in it!) but it wasn't really worth the extra money for just a few more months. Would I buy the larger one to start with if I had the choice up-front? Not sure...the little one was so light and small, if it had been any bigger we might have carried it around with us less...

pussycatmomma · 18/09/2007 19:23

hello you lot
I am determined to try and grab 5 mins to read this thread everyday so i dont get left behind, but dont have a great memory so will try and comment on the bits i remember!
The lady whos husband is stopping smoking - well done to him, thats a great thing he is doing there. Hope it all goes well. My mum stopped smoking last year after a life time of it and has never felt better. Working on my mother in law now (only person in whole of family who smokes now) trying to encourage her to stop before bambino comes along
All things nursery - I bought the crib we are using second hand off ebay for £25 and will just buy a new mattress. It is the same one I was looking at in John Lewis and is in perfect condition. Like another poster says, they are not in them long at all, but we are borrowing a Moses basket from a friend for use downstairs and hopefully bambino will sleep in crib in our room at night until big enough for cot in own room. Someone asked me how I came to a decision about a pram earlier - basically I found all the ones which were in my price bracket (under 450 inc car seat). I knew I wanted a travel system, one with 4 wheels not 3 (call me oldfashioned!) and basically one that i liked!! Once id seen the silver cross and had a go in johnlewis, I stopped looking. I am not a good decision maker and would have driven myself and dh up the wall with craziness had I continued looking and looking and looking. Once Id decided I found a fantastic deal on the internet, and bought the whole caboodle for £334 including the silver cross car seat which fits into the chassis should you need to use it that way. Phew - thats one major purchase out of the way!
mixedmamma I read the other thread you linked to , and hope you are ok. How frightening to think you might be going into labour Crossing everthing for you. Take it easy and have a jolly good rest.
nct classes and antenatal classes - I have no idea when mine start. Only doing the free ones not the nct ones. I was very cautious about finding the nct ones too "middle class" (not that i am a scruff bag you understand!) and decided that in the end dh and i had better things to spend out money on. We opted for the free classes, lots of support from my friends who have recently had children, and 3 sister in laws!
Sorry that is all the catching up I can manage
I have had terrible back ache over the past couple of weeks, seems horrid today. Cant get comfy sitting, standing or lying down. Also funny pain in my pelvis/hips/general down below region....anyone else got this??
love to all xxxxxx dh made my tea bless him and is hollering from down stairs

sabinar · 18/09/2007 20:35

hi all

it must be the season for husbands/partners giving up smoking - mine's been off the fags for over a week now. Very pleased. Fingers crossed he can stick with it - I'm optimistic

re: NCT/NHS classes - I've not heard anything about NHS classes... how do you find out about them? I was advised to book into NCT classes early and did so months ago. Ours start at the end of October (not sure what week that puts me at) and run into December. Can't believe it's almost October already!

I'm starting yoga next week and just booked in for a 'Massage in Pregnancy and Labour' class and a 'Early Parenting' class at the Active Birth Centre - will be interested to see how they go - hopefully will result in lots of massages! Anyone done these before?

We've not bought anything much for bub yet... there are promises from friends of various things so I'll have to see exactly what they've got before we get to shopping.

I've been thinking about getting one of these 'Natures Nest' baby beds (www.naturesnest.co.uk/) - have you gals heard anything about these or have any experience with them? I'm pretty tempted, even though it's not as cute as other options. I like the idea of enhanced sleeping!

gingeme · 18/09/2007 22:05

Oh my goodness it is so hard to keep up with you lot and Ive only been away a few days.
Had a briliant weekend away to my parents. The weather was good and I did alot of walking which was tiring but very fullfilling.
Feeling beany move loads now. Just had a bath and saw a few little plips sticking out too
Glad your feeling better Awen and all you other Mums are in good health.
My ds3 has his pre assessment for his op tommorrow afternoon. Trouble is he has a horrible cold so I just hope they dont put his op back because of it
Well Ill see some fo you lovely ladies tommorrow evening. I hope you all find it ok.
Off to bed now. xx

MamaMaiasaura · 18/09/2007 22:21

gingeme - good luck for the post op tomorrow. THe cold only make a diff when they are actually going to op. Talking of which they have cancelled ds's Rescheduled till the following week 2 Oct, annoying as messed ds about.

mixedmama - any news??? I hope everything is going ok for you. Read your other thread.

MrsMc - starting to consider the silver cross now! £300 for pushchair/pram and not too bulky.

Midwife came round today for antenatal. SHe is sooo lovely but might not see her again as she is moving up north. Pudding is head down, she thinks i might have a lot of fluid and mentioned hydrosomething. Am booked in for glucose tolerence test and have extra scans already so should all be ok. Bump is measured either 26 or 27. Heart rate is good 150 and my blood pressure FANTASTIC 102/62 (again )

Had shitty start to day and ds was a complete pickle and I was a stroppy mum.. not good combination! I forget that he has a lot of changes going on. Day ended lovely tho, snuggled up with ds and he fell asleep in my arms. No idea how I will ever love another child as much, I am sure it just happens tho.

Have a lovely evening tomorow all those going. Would love to meet up with you all but just too far.

love to you all xxxxxx

barristermum · 18/09/2007 22:41

Hey girls,
As ever, such a lot going on with us all.
Naetha - I completely get where you are at over future changes. I am in utter sympathy. Obviously dead excited about having a much longed-for baby, but I am really scared how much our lives, which I totally love, are going to be completely transformed. All I can see is the stuff we won't be able to do and will have to do and I can't visualise the off-setting benefits since I don't yet really know my baby and don't know how much I will love him or her - I am sure I will love them enough that the sacirifices will not seem to be such but I just can't get to that point in my head right now and sometimes it really scares me.

I had a miserable day today and have felt really tearful - had a monthly check up at the hospital, this time with the doctor and I had a 12 year old muppet who just badgered me about tests I had said I didn't want and then signed me up for a load of new ones - she suspects I may have an irregular heartbeat and I now have to have an ECG and various other tests. It was all a bit stressful - I didn't trust what she was saying and felt really bullied by her and the consultant she then handed me over to when I wasn't initially agreeing to what she wanted. It's amazing how much these things get to you isn't it? On the positive side beannie's heartbeat was strong and s/he kicked hard enough last night for dh to feel it for the first time which he loved.

Mixedmama - how's things - you ok - still going to see you tomorrow night? Really looking forward to this meet up - will be in southampton until 4.30 so may be a little late but not much.

Take care all.

barristermum · 18/09/2007 22:43

Oh, and Mrs McJnr - have been given nothing about free classes from hospital, and NCT have ignored all my emails as to when classes may be save to say that my name has been put on the waiting list - as you say, how is one supposed to plan a life?

MamaMaiasaura · 18/09/2007 22:44

barristermum - I am a southampton lady Take it you are here for work. We should meet up when you are down at some point.. perhaps cream tea at John Lewis

MotherofZ · 19/09/2007 08:10

Morning all - hope you all are well .

OP posts:
mixedmama · 19/09/2007 08:13

Morning ladies,

Thanks for all your concern. All seems fine was in the hospital for hours last night, heard a few babies be born tho

They ruled out urinary infections and prem labour and in the end just wrote

? Unspecified pain
? Braxton Hicks

in my notes. Gave me some apracetemol and packed me off.

Now for the catch up:

I got told about my ante natal classes last time at 36 weeks and they were for four weeks so as you can imagine people were dropping like flies. When we had our hospital tour in the third week , one of the ladies was there having had her baby that day!!! TBH they were a pile of crap aswell, the most boring midwife on the planet who basically told us everything we had pretty much all looked up on the net already. made one long term friend out of it tho which was nice.

Am still coming to meet up tonight. Am meeting some friends for coffee on the Strand first then making my way up. Cant remember the name it was booked under but going to look down as I am sure Gingme did say I am sure. What do I say when i arrive???? Hi, I am mixedmama....

MotherofZ · 19/09/2007 08:22

WAsn't it Byrone?

OP posts:
mixedmama · 19/09/2007 08:30

might just turn up and say

"table for the pregnant ladies please"

Just found it Brydon - good memory MoZ.

Oh booked some theatre tickets for Dh and me for Saturday... we have a great local theatre in Stratford and went to see a British Turkish play there before and it was hilarious and this weekend we are going to see a British Indian play - looks really funny. And £24 for two tickets, bargain.

MotherofZ · 19/09/2007 08:48

theatre trips sounds lovely.
Oh gosh I remember Statford...used to go to the local town hall for our Uni exams.

OP posts:
mixedmama · 19/09/2007 08:57

They "rejuvenating" for the Olympics!!! altho same old people so only so much you can do in my opinion. Love it tho used to go there for pantomimes with school.... BTW is DS who will be 22 months come decemeber too young for panto... suppose he is really, he wont understand and not sure he will sit still for long enough, but would love to take him.

MotherofZ · 19/09/2007 09:09

MotherofZ · 19/09/2007 10:09

OP posts:
mixedmama · 19/09/2007 10:20

OMG wherever there is a bouncy castle i have a go, dont need any persuading.

toomanyshoes · 19/09/2007 10:23

hello ladies, just a quick hello and to say that I'm so sorry but I don't think I'll be able to make it along to the meet up today. DD and I have both got horrible tummy upsets and I feel dreadful this morning. Typical to start feeling unwell as soon as I finish work, will probably get a cold next!!
Hope you have a lovely time and hopefully we can do another one soon? Was really looking forward to it

mixedmama · 19/09/2007 10:24

Lol @ MotherofZ very true....
It is quite difficult when you first have a meet up and feel a bit silly saying your mumsnet names. Maybe we should get stickers like they do on your first day of school

Well got to try and get ds3 to wee in a pot for his appt later. Hah ha Ive had enough practice so should be easy peasy for him.
Laters ladies

ayrshirelolo · 19/09/2007 14:25

Hello ladies!
sorry i haven't posted for so long (i always seem to have to start off saying that!) but life a bit hectic with work etc and me, dh and dd have all got bad colds...and i'm feeling sorry for myself coz he can have night nurse, she can have medised and snufflebabes and i can have sod all! Oh well, it'll go away soon!
Quick catch up on all the stuff going on -
for dd (15 months old) we bought a Graco travel system from Babies R Us (wot a naff name that is!)complete with car seat, cozytoes, rain cover, bag etc and the whole lot was about £200. I know it was a bit stingy, but they are into a fold up umbrella buggy within a matter of a few months, and it's still in good enough nick for number 2. My friend bought the bugaboo stuff - cost her hundreds and her baby boy was a biggie, had grown out of bits of it really quickly and she complained at me there was no where to put her shopping if she was out for a wee stroll to Asda.
We were lucky with the crib - borrowed one and just bought a new matress. We bought a moses basket though, which we used as a carry cot and for daytime sleeps - didnt use it for long but invaluable for first 3 months!
DD has been in a cot bed and a sucession of sleeping bags since about 4 months and is happy. Ikea changing table is fab! good value and good size drawers, my sister's kids are 8 and 4 and still use it as a chest of drawers.
Classes - as we moved house and health authority last time when i was 30 weeks preg we couldn't go to any local classes as they were all booked up. Basically i read loads of books, checked the net and stuff and didn't miss them! Midwife even complemented me while in early labour that my breathing technique was spot on - it was the first time i'd ever done it! When things went a little "off plan" later i don't know if the classes would have helped, but i had read enough to know what OP meant, and what the options then were. Hope that helps some of you? This time no classes, but i'll ask for a tour of the labour suite as it's a new hospital since last time!
Sorry this is so long, hope you are all groovy !
Love, lolo x
