If anyone is formula feeding how do you work that when baby is first born if the hospital don't provide anything? 😂 First baby and can't work it out!

SerBrienneOfHouseTarth · 13/04/2020 14:10

Hi everyone, can I join the thread too please? I'm 31wks today. Due 14th June with DC2. DC1 was four weeks premature and had a short NICU stay so I'm hoping this one stays put a little longer than it's older brother! :)

AndddddHerewegoagain · 13/04/2020 14:23

@NakeliP we had a cold milton steriliser last time as my son had special bottles that couldn't be heat steralised. From years of being a nanny before a mum i have to say I found it alot less work than a microwave one. You just have to change the water every 24 hours and pop a new tablet in. Then once you've washed the bottles you just pop them in for 15 mins and everything is steralised.

Also hoping to breastfeed this time but they are helpful for sterilising dummies, teethers, spoons once you start weaning, and as above- breast pump parts.

mrssunshinexxx · 13/04/2020 14:54

@NakeliP I got a nuby one of amazon think it was £13 comes with a bottle and a dummy too takes 4 mins in the microwave

NakeliP · 13/04/2020 15:10

@AndddddHerewegoagain I think I'll add the Milton stuff to my wishlist as it seems quite easy and fuss free and fairly inexpensive to start with. If it turns out I need to bottle/formula feed I may look into a microwave type affair once baby is here and we work out what we need. Thanks for the advice, all :)

AndddddHerewegoagain · 13/04/2020 15:32

@NakeliP i also got a separate washing up bowl just for the bottles which i found useful.

Firsttimerat35 · 13/04/2020 16:09

I'm also starting to think about what to out into my hospital bag...think I'll definitely take a selection of sizes for baby. Especially since midwife appts keep getting pushed back so I've no idea when I might get a good estimate on size. Need to start seriously considering what snacks to take for hubby and I as well if the current restrictions stay in place!! One question I've been wanting to ask is - and I think one person might have already mentioned this - but has anyone experienced the virtual NCT classes yet? Wondering how effective they are??x

Gigitree · 13/04/2020 16:22

@Firsttimerat35 we had our first virtual NCT class last Thursday. It was actually better than I was expecting. Obviously in person would be better, but given that this is our only option I felt the leader/instructor did a good job. It was over ‘zoom’ and they did little breakout sessions so you would work with other couples in smaller groups, to help you make connections with others.
They also set up a WhatsApp group so we can all chat outside of sessions if we want to.
Overall I was pleased with it xxx

umabb · 13/04/2020 17:01

@Gigitree great to know that the virtual class is good. I've also booked but will be in May. Did you need a baby doll or something for the classes? Thanks x

@UnilakTea and @Smiffette I am a bit confused about the formula in hospital. I didn't take any last time as intending to bf but think I will just in case this time given my previous problems with bf. I figure the bottle won't stay sterile though- last time I kept them in the steriliser until use or in the fridge. So do they provide a bottle?

I know you can get newborn packs with bottles in them but I've already bought the regular ready made formula so don't want to waste money on a newborn bottle pack as well. Particularly as I am actually hoping bf works out!

Gigitree · 13/04/2020 17:28

@umabb she just said we could use a teddy or something similar when it comes to it, but I’ve only had one session so haven’t needed one yet x

Firsttimerat35 · 13/04/2020 17:32

@Gigitree Aaah thank you that's good to hear! That's one of the things that i feel like Coronavirus has spoiled for me. Making some friends with local mums going through everything at the same time. OH is going to hate it I think!!x

Gigitree · 13/04/2020 17:35

@Firsttimerat35 yeah I agree. As much as I know we have a lot to still be thankful for, and I know it could be a lot worse. I do have moments where I get upset about how much we have/will miss out on due to this horrible virus!

Smiffette · 13/04/2020 18:04

@Pegase I was planning on sterilising when the contractions start as it doesn't take long with the tablets so I will just do it whilst delaying going to hospital!

mrssunshinexxx · 13/04/2020 19:10

@Smiffette @Pegase surely if you sterilise bottle close to due date and have lid on bottle let it air dry properly first it stays sterile ? Or am I missing something x

Smiffette · 13/04/2020 19:13

@mrssunshinexxx that's what I was thinking too, but figured I'd have time to do it whilst I'm labouring at home so will give me something to do

Girlinajumpsuit · 13/04/2020 19:15

Hello, mind if I join? Due on 3 June and getting very excited/nervous now - we were ttc for over 2 years until we were successful through ivf and I honestly can't believe the day I meet my baby is finally nearly here!

Firsttimerat35 · 13/04/2020 19:35

@Gigitree definitely - I have to mentally kick myself sometimes when I start thinking if all the things I'm missing out on because you're right, there is so much to be grateful for. I just allow myself a little bit of self pity every few days and then I get over it again. Got lots of deliveries to look forward to in the next couple of weeks rather than actually going shopping! Congratulations @Girlinajumpsuit ! Hope you're doing ok! Re sterilising - sure I read somewhere that as long as they're kept sealed they're sterile for 24hrs, is that right?? Feels like there's so much to think of but I'm just hoping it all falls into place when the time comes and it'll all make sense....!x

mrssunshinexxx · 13/04/2020 19:47

NEXT IS BACK OPEN ONLINE LADIES
capitals so hopefully people see it when scrolling., only allowing certain amount of order a day but sure it will get easier in a couple weeks to get a slot if not straight away

AndddddHerewegoagain · 13/04/2020 20:24

News sounded slightly positive today. Lockdown for at least another 2-3 weeks but then they will hopefully start reducing lockdown and restrictions so keeping everything crossed for all you ladies who have 8/9 weeks to go that things might be slightly more normal by June xx

Firsttimerat35 · 13/04/2020 21:20

I missed the update today. That sounds a lot more positive. I really hope so. Not sure when everyone is due but I hope whatever the situation everyone has as stress free of a time as possible.

Also liking the Next news...looks like its for childrens wear only so far. I had an order cancelled a couple of weeks ago with curtains for the nursery so really want to get those re-ordered!!

Having a late night tonight to try and nab an online delivery slot in the early hours!

AndddddHerewegoagain · 13/04/2020 23:10

Don't quote me on that time line as we still haven't hit the peak for new cases let alone deaths which lag 3-4 weeks behind but the chief scientist today said that lockdown is working but needs to continue for at least another 3 weeks. Over the next few weeks it will hopefully plateau and they can then start an exit plan

Just trying to be positive as thats the only thing keeping me going! Can't see much happening before furlough ends which i think is the beginning of June x

AmyMaria2 · 14/04/2020 00:42

@AndddddHerewegoagain I really hope that is the case I've been so upset and anxious about the birth, I'm dreading it and I never thought I'd say that 😞 I've been so excited to experience birth and have my first baby with my mum and partner by my side & everything is just turned upside down, I'm praying things have improved by the end of may🤞🤞🤞

Hope everyone's doing well, I haven't been good at checking this recently x

32+6
X

mrssunshinexxx · 14/04/2020 07:16

@AndddddHerewegoagain that sounds really hopeful I thought they weren't announcing anything re time line until after the cobra meeting this week

AndddddHerewegoagain · 14/04/2020 07:44

They haven't officially announced a timeline but the scientist next to Raab said we need to watch the graphs for the next 3 weeks, that the graphs are doing exactly what they've done in Spain and Italy etc but we need at least 2 weeks of plateau to make sure we have reached the peak so im guessing from there.

As i said don't quote me on it but just trying to see the 🌈🌈 in all of this.

My baby is probably coming in 3 weeks so im screwed either way 😂
