Araz208 · 26/11/2019 14:11

Hey! Just wanted to start up a thread because I couldn’t find another one, just got my BFP today after about 6 months of trying. Due date is 1st august! Still feeling nervous as I’ve had 2 miscarriages in the past but both before 6 weeks, so ill be keeping my fingers crossed and wont let myself get too excited until that deadline has passed!

Hope to hear from other ladies due at the same time, and hear your BFP stories :) xx

@jennielm It's such a worry, especially when you've experienced loss before. That fear never leaves us.

Remember what I said before (and I should remember this too)
This is a different egg, a different sperm, and different pregnancy entirely.
Maybe get bloods done as @Jojo19834 says?

53Lucy · 10/12/2019 08:26

Morning all. I'm 4+5 weeks, due 15th August I think. Fingers crossed for this one as had a missed miscarriage in April. The only symptom so far is a really itchy scalp and slightly bigger boobs!

Good luck all!

Jojo19834 · 10/12/2019 08:44

@53lucy congratulations!! Itch scalp? That’s a new one! Did you have that last time too?

Dollywilde · 10/12/2019 08:48

Morning everyone! Bloated as hell today, standing on the train and had to undo the belt on my coat Blush sexy...

Speaking of which - and apologies for the TMI - has anyone DTD with their DH/DP since finding out? We were getting down to it last night and it was actually ok (the extra sensitive boobs weren’t the problem I thought they would be!) but then I wussed out at PIV so we finished, er, more creatively Grin I just panicked about the idea of knocking my cervix or bringing on a bleed or something...

I know this is completely stupid as I’ve read there’s no impact whatsoever yet still. I had a treatment on my cervix for a dodgy smear a few years ago and had the same nerves about doing it again but that time I could drink a bottle of white wine to lower my inhibitions before jumping him and that’s not really an option right now!!

Hi all, how long after getting your BFP did you call/refer to the midwife? I've been testing for the last couple of weeks and getting very faint lines, had a v v faint line on a frer on Friday morn (7th) which was my most convincing positive so far. I tested again in Sunday but not there (may have faint but chucked it away in a strop!) I did have a few drinks in Thursday eve which could have contributed to a more dehydrated urine Fri morn.
After reading a lot online I have a feeling I may just have low hcg levels.

Its frustrating that I'm not getting a clear positive, lots of symptoms which make me feel like I am pregnant. Feel like only a blood test will confirm things.

Thanks in advance! X

Just had my first midwife appointment and it was awful. I was shocked at how many bad things they have to warn you about and the information was coming thick and fast and I have a lot of things to read which has left me rather deflated and sad.

Can anyone who has had a baby befor please explain to me the screenings? She went a little too fast and I didn't quite catch on with what she was saying... but at 12 weeks is there a Down syndrome test? Or do you have one if your 12 week scan looks at high risk? She went rather fast and ended up talking about a needle in my belly and 1/100 mis carry chance but I dunno if that only if I am high risk ?
Xx
Hope everyone is ok today xx

partypenguins · 10/12/2019 10:51

@Lucylou22039 I haven't had my midwife appointment yet, but the GP said you could opt to have the enhanced screening scan at 12 weeks for chromosome abnormalities or just a basic. If the enhanced one showed you were more likely to have the abnormalities then you would be offered amniocentesis for more detail, but they don't do it unless that scan is abnormal because as you say, it carries a higher risk.

Frazzlerock · 10/12/2019 10:54

@Lucylou22039 She should have slowed down a bit for you really!
Sorry you had a bad experience.

At 12 weeks, they do the nuchal fold test where they check the thickness of the tissue at the back of the baby's neck (from looking at scan) and also do a blood test (from you not baby). They compare the nuchal fold with your bloods results and will come up with a % of Down Syndrome risk. If it is high risk, then they will suggest an amniocentesis which is entirely your choice of course.
For this, they put a needle into your tummy and draw out some amniotic fluid which they can test. But yes there is a risk of miscarriage. Its really invasive. You can pay to have a Harmony (NIST) test at 10 weeks which is just a blood test - they test your DNA and baby's DNA to check risk of chromosome issues. It's about £400 IIRC, and far less invasive than the Amnio.

Lucylou22039 · 10/12/2019 10:57

@partypenguins @Frazzlerock thank you so much for the reply's it's really helped.

I know they have to tell you everything but think she just told me to read up on everything and obviously I started and then started crying and panicking

X

Moominmiss · 10/12/2019 11:10

@Lucylou22039 so from what I recall, as well as the 12 week scan, I had blood taken. Then during the scan they take a measurement of the fluid at the back of baby’s neck (nuchal measurement), and then they combine that with the blood results to give you a result. With my previous pregnancies my results were 1 in 87,000, 1 in 154,000 and 1 in 96,000. So all very low risk. I think if you get a result of 1 in 100 or less then they will offer you further testing as in amnio.

You can opt out of the combined screening test if you want to.

I haven’t had a baby for 5 years so things may have changed slightly but that was certainly what happened previously x

Moominmiss · 10/12/2019 11:12

Forgot to add what the others ladies said, in that the amnio carries a risk of miscarriage so for me if my results show me as high risk I will opt to pay privately for the harmony (NIPT) scan and testing. Clinics local to me range from £400/£450.

Lucylou22039 · 10/12/2019 11:13

@Moominmiss yes I think that's what she ran through statistic wise but then obviously went straight into high risk ect ect. I think I'm just being a baby and probably should have asked more questions

Thank you for your reply that makes me feel loads better xx

Frazzlerock · 10/12/2019 11:22

I'm still waiting to hear from the midwives.

I emailed them on Thursday (that's how we have to do it here, no GP appointment). Says 1-2 working days for response. It is now Tuesday and they know I'm anxious because of my MCs but I've heard nothing.
I know it's still early days and I've plenty of time to see the midwife but it would be nice to be acknowledged at least.

Tink12345 · 10/12/2019 11:28

I'm still too scared to book in with midwife in case it jinxes it! 4+6 today (got my initial dates wrong by a couple of days I think) so figure I have plenty of time! Heartburn has gone, still v bloated. Boobs sore but nothing more than pre period type aching. If I wasnt still testing positive I wouldn't believe it Confused

MaisieMolly · 10/12/2019 11:32

@tink12345 I’m 5+ 3 or thereabouts and still no symptoms. Except for keeping having to make excuses for not drinking I don’t feel any different either and don’t really believe it. Also probably a bit of self protection not to get too invested early on in case the worst happens I suppose.
My booking appointment is first week of jan with my data scan towards the end of Jan, I guess we won’t really know any more until then. but I am tempted for an early scan before Xmas but I’ll only be 6+ something so probably too early and going to wait until after Xmas I think x

Dollywilde · 10/12/2019 11:36

I’ve self referred to my hospital (no need for a GP appt here) - currently 4w 5d. Possibly a bit early but that places my booking in appointment in the first week of January and I want to be sure not to miss the appointment card before we head off for Xmas as I’ll likely need to jiggle a few meetings around when I get it.

MaisieMolly · 10/12/2019 11:41

@dollywilde agree that a good reason to start the process is that things will start to slow down over Xmas and if you want your appointments in jan towards the earlier side of when you’ll be able to have them you might as well start. I’ll be 11 + a few days or there abouts when my dating scan is booked for. I also thought if the worst happens and you need to go to EPU or whatever you’ll already be registered.

Macbless · 10/12/2019 12:15

@Lucylou22039 I think it's understandable to feel overwhelmed. It sounds like she threw lots of info at you. There are some posts about antenatal testing in the antenatal tests section of talk on Mumsnet. I was having a read as I'm on the older side (37) and not sure what to do about screening/testing. To warn you, some women have had tests that show they are high risk but there are also some good discussions about the tests and how they actually are to have done. I found them helpful anyway xx

Moominmiss · 10/12/2019 12:37

@Macbless I’m also 37 so on the older side of things. Have you decided what you’re planning on doing regarding the screening tests?

I have initially thought that I will have the standard combined screening and if I’m shown to be high risk then pay extra for the NIPT (harmony test).

Aggie53 · 10/12/2019 12:56

hello ladies , Im 6 weeks now and im planning to do Harmony test but privately, My Gyn Doctor said i can do it at 11 weeks and doesnt have to be the expensive one there is a cheaper at 200 euro which checks for major chromosonal abnormalities. Im 36 by the way and its my first

Frazzlerock · 10/12/2019 12:58

I'm 40 and will most likely have the NIPT at 10 weeks

Macbless · 10/12/2019 13:55

@Moominmiss I'm still undecided. The harmony test is non-invasive but still only gives you risk rather than telling you yes or no to a disease. So if it came back at 1:5 risk of Downs. You'd likely still have to have more testing. Unlike CVS or Amnio which will tell you one way or the other.
So still considering things.
I've not seen a midwife yet so guess I just keep pondering it for the moment and when I see them have another chat through. I've also not really spoken to my DH about it. Thought it would be better to have the information and then talk together.
I do feel excited about being pregnant but it is definitely heavily moderated by the worrying things that come with it! Xx

Talcott2007 · 10/12/2019 15:30

Hi All, so just wanted to update - looks very much like that it's been a chemical pregnancy this time, started full blow 'AF' not long after I has posted yesterday - technically only 3 days late. So clearly not meant to be this time. That will be a lesson in not testing too early in the future. It was such a strong positive on Friday too! Have to say I was really sad about it yesterday but today I actually feel OK - I get to eat all the cheese and drink all the wine at Xmas now!

Sending everyone on the thread my very wishes for happy healthy August babies xxx

NamiSwan · 10/12/2019 15:48

@talcott2007 sorry to hear of your loss, fingers crossed for you for the future.

Lots of interesting discussion on screening etc on the thread. In both my previous pregnancies I went for the nuchal fold test and was low risk both times. If I had been high risk I would not have gone for the amnio due to miscarriage risk and would have just prepared myself for potential outcomes. That's pretty much my approach this time. I wouldn't do anything if I found out for sure anyway so don't need to know for sure, but would want to know if there was a potential so it didn't come as a shock at birth. My sister in law had my nephew last year and she was 26 during pregnancy and did the nuchal test and was told baby was high risk, she had to have monitored birth and not allowed in midwife led unit etc. It was a lot of stress for her and in the end baby was born with no chromosomal abnormality so even if high risk it still is only a probability and doesn't mean anything for sure.

I think the decision whether to go for screening, what type of screening, and what to do with outcome is very personal, so best thing to do is make an informed decision and be happy with the choices you make.

Frazzlerock · 10/12/2019 16:08

Oh @talcott2007 I'm so sorry Sad You sound very strong xx

This is the thing @NamiSwan I wouldn't do anything if we had a high risk, but I don't know what DP's thoughts are. I guess we need to have that conversation given our ages
