Hi, thought I'd start a new thread. Hope ou find this OK!

Just been shopping downtown and bought a fab paid of maternity pants for work.

Also bought "The Baby Name Wizard" as Borders were having 20% off everything. Feel free anyone to ask me a question about names now!! The book categorises them into the following "style families" (chances are if you like one name in the family, you'll like a number of others - e.g. I tend to go for "Antique Charm" names for girls which include Abigail, Adeline, AMelia, Anna. Annabel, Annalise, Ava, Bella, Clara, Daisy, Eleanor, Emma, Eva, Georgia, Grace, Hannah and Isabel):
African, Androgynous, Antique Charm, Bell tones, Biblical, Brisk and Breezy, Celtic, Charms and Graces, Country and Western, English, The -ens, Exotic Traditionals, Fanciful, French, German, Greek, Guys and Dolls, Italian, Jewish, Lacy and Lissome, Ladies and Gentlemen, Last Names First, Latino, Little Darlings, Long Gone, Mid-Century, Modern Meanings, Muslim, Mythological, Namesakes, New Classics, Nickname-Proof, Place-Names, Porch-Sitters, Saints, Scandanavian, '70s and '80s, Shakespearean, Slavic, Solid Citizens, Surfer Sixties, Timeless and Why Not?

I know what you mean i enjoyed doing that last time, i think i packed and unpacked about 20 times.
Ive also been thinking about washing some of the stuff that ive got for the baby but im going to hang on until i get some drawers etc for the nursery at the end of the month.

Ive also been adding stuff to my weekly shopping like wipes, bottles, nappies etc so ive got plenty in and dont need to go out for a while when we get out of hospital.

Neuro · 10/09/2007 15:43

Great, thank you. Going to hit Asda at weekend and start stockpiling. So perhaps about 10 x 0-3 months would you say? And then 8 x 3months ?
I am planning on doing a real nappy thing, but thought i'd use disposable for first month just to get the hang of having a baby first. I am quite eco conscious, so, can anyone reccommend concsiouenscious nappies? Can't spell today!

fifisworld · 10/09/2007 15:52

Asda do some enviromental friendly nappies, cant remember what they are called but they are there own brand ones.
I'd say about 10-15 vests and 10-15 sleepsuits.
Id check the sizes of the stuff at asda if you can coz the sizes there tend to be big.

thelady · 10/09/2007 16:19

Neuro: thanks for asking all that (another 1st-timer here!).

I'm planning a dozen of most basic things, and creating a wishlist of the more expensive stuff to pass to family - that way I can limit the teddies and stuff-that-needs-ironing.

We're also planning on using washable nappies, with disposables until the cord heals (I think). That way we have a clear-cut changeover deadline.

I've been looking at breastfeeding tops online, and am not impressed at all. Frump frump frump! Might have a word with mum when she comes to stay, and see if she can get the sewing machine going....

Neuro · 10/09/2007 16:19

OK last question for today - how many nappies do they get through in 1 day?

Thanks!

Bouncingturtle · 10/09/2007 16:19

I bought some from Tesco, Naty Baby World, I think they are called. Made from corn oil, so are biodegradable. They are priced similar to Huggies/Pampers.
I'm doing the same - use disposables for first couple of weeks, going to buy some trial packs from the Nappy Lady to ascertain which of the resusables are most appropriate for my little one.
Much as I would like the bamboo ones, I don't think they would be very practical as they take ages to dry and I don't have a tumble dryer.

fifisworld · 10/09/2007 16:26

From what i can remember ds was changed about 8-9 times a day.
They have sticky poo which looks like melted chocolate called meconium for the first couple of weeks so it might be an idea for you to get some cotton wool and just use that with warm water at first instead of wipes, thats what the midwife recommended me to do.

mixedmama · 10/09/2007 16:34

yeah i got told to use cotton wool and water.... then when we were in hospital the midwife complained i didnt have baby wipes... so much contradictory info.

Neuro · 10/09/2007 17:46

I only thought of breastfeeding tops at the weekend and pictured myself constantly pulling my top up. I guess wearing shirts and cardigans all the time might be a way round it?!

I think i've totally gone off my boss and that i will look around for another job. I've only been here justs over a year and i've got that permanenent feeling of wantinig to be somewhere else all the time - felt like this before i was pregnant.

Oh dear

suey2 · 10/09/2007 17:58

SPD or not SPD? If the pain is very sharp and central, occurring particularly when you hit the ground with your heel when walking is it prob SPD. The other one-legged activities can also be aggravating, but not us as bad as walking.
Try and avoid waddling, however tempting. The protective stability will not be used and more force will go through the pelvis.

cazzybabs · 10/09/2007 18:51

Our bamboo terries seem to take as long to dry as our cotton terries. We do have a tumble dries but I think it mitages the good things about using real nappies.

insywinsyspider · 10/09/2007 20:20

Neuro - we did the eco disposable thing before going into real nappies when ds was 11lb from memory I think that was about 6 weeks, I'm becoming ridiculously eco concious and have to say all the 'eco' nappies I've seen on the high street are only about 70% biodegradable and they are still bleached white (why do they do that??) anyway look for moltex nappies online, we got ours from spirit of nature they were great we ordered 200 to get us thro the first bit and still get the larger sizes from our local reusable nappy supplier for holidays (mainly camping where we don't have a washing machine - have to draw the line somewhere!) not sure how they compare on price but I'd recommend them (they also smell lovely - kind of woodey)

Also we found people bought us loads of 0-3 things but it was lovely to get a couple of newborn blue outfits/babygrows that actually fitted - prob a bit indulent but looked lovely for all the first visitors

for breastfeeding I bought a zip up hoddie top so I could lift up shirt and still wrap it round me to cover me up and in winter keep me warm

congrats mixedmama!

loucee - I found the 3G buggyboard - do you think it'll work with the pram (demicot) part attached? thats the bit I'd need to use as dc couldn't go into pushchair bit till 6mo old

buzzybee - have great holiday

insywinsyspider · 10/09/2007 20:21

also forgot to add hello to everyone else - bit of a mission trying to chat to everyone!

Loucee · 10/09/2007 21:55

Agree with the 10-15 vests and babygros for newborn/0-3,DD was also quick sickly as a newborn and I was forever washing and drying so decided to buy some more! Especially in the winter as the option to dry outside is limited.

I found Asda sizes smaller that Tescos/Marks so take one out before buying a whole lot.

Incy, yes if I get a buggy board it'll be to use with dreami carrycot, I think if the handles are extended out there should be enough room? Saying that though I think I've now decided to get a double buggy as DD will only be 22 months and we live on a hill and Scottish winters are harsh.

Last time I packed far too much in my hospital bag as I thought I'd take enough incase I had a section and required a longer stay. This time I'm going to pack a small overnight bag with 2 days of clothes for newbaby, a small bag for DH to have in delivery suite then a back up bag in the boot or at home that DH can bring in if I have an extended stay.
We'll have to have a "top tip" for hospital bag soon, I loved hearing what quirky potions /bits and bobs people took in but think I've forgotten them now

insywinsyspider · 10/09/2007 22:02

my ds will be 18mo so still trying to decide about forking out for a double buggy... it would save us so much if I could get away with a board

agree with 2 bag packing, did that last time otherwise it would look like I was there for weeks holiday, hopefully home birth will be great and won't need it!

Loucee · 10/09/2007 22:27

Incy, I think a buggy board will be a viable option for you. If we didn't live 1 mile from the Town and on a hill and in Scotland I would just do that too (it would be perfect for when we go shopping in Glasgow or days out where DD would walk mostly anyway).
I was contemplating selling my Buzz to help fund a double buggy but am now thinking I'll try and get 2nd hand double then sell that when the nicer weather comes in April time.

becklespeckle · 11/09/2007 01:30

Thanks for SPD info Suey, pain is def when put feet down (particularly left foot) but would not describe it as very sharp, more like sore muscle pain and mostly low under the bump rather than in pelvis. How do you avoid waddling? It is unfortunately the most comfortable way to walk at the moment! My walking speed is already very slow (mightily frustraiting as I am usually a brisk walker). Tonight someone who didn't know I was pg (well hidden under massive work fleece) asked me if there was something wrong with my leg cos I was walking funny!

becklespeckle · 11/09/2007 01:32

Argh! Stupid late night posting, meant to add...

Don't think I have SPD, just think it is age and wear and tear on the body TBH.

Off now to find John Cleese to see if can join Ministry of Funny Walks...

buzzybee · 11/09/2007 08:13

Neuro, as others have said you will definitely need smaller than 6 months! Particularly for body-suits. I was shocked at how huge DD looked in even the 0-3 months size when she was born and she was average-large. So I went out and bought a 3 pack of body suits from Tescos although she only wore them for about 1 month I felt it was worth it having at least a few things that fitted. You'll find that older relatives will buy in bigger sizes because they're practical - I ended up with a lot more 6 month size than 0-3 months.
My DD was not particularly prone to "sicki-ness" and as a girl less inclined to "leak" from the nappies so we could probably have gotten away with 6 outfits so long as you're willing to wash every 2-3 days.

I still have some Kooshies "real" nappies which worked well for us last time. But had forgotten good point about using disposables for first few days/weeks - will buy next time I see on special. I have already bought 2 packs on maternity pads and nursing pads plus cotton wool balls. I remember being freaked out last time how long I continued bleeding after birth - MUCH more than a normal period.

Sorry - meant to say how TINY she looked in 0-3 months so bought a 3 pack of NB size...

Suey - thanks for those pointers about SPD. i think I may just be unhealthy altho it is only recently that i have started feeling like this. It actually takes qyite some time to turn over or move from my hips down at the moment.

MotherofZ · 11/09/2007 09:47

Had an awful night - the pain on my left hand inner thigh (were the joint is) was much stronger. Put a pillow in between my legs which helped a little - but I toss and turn at lot before I fall asleep so I had to keep rearranging myself.
I think I'll just grin and bear until my next appointment with M/W next week

mixedmama · 11/09/2007 09:52

Feel for you MotherofZ - I had this on Thursday night. As soon as I got comfy had to move and my hips would lock completely meaning I had to wake up completely to move.

suey2 · 11/09/2007 09:55

yes mixedmama, I am getting lots of random discomfort, under bump, guts ache, occasional low back and buttock pain- but none fo these are SPD (thank god!) and they go away again when i stop being silly (usually postural or after i have run for a bus)
Trying to walk tall and keep chest lifted can help on the waddling front- not letting yourself sink into the hips after you land on one leg.

buzzybee · 11/09/2007 10:01

Had a fun evening treating DD for nits - AGAIN! Have tried 3 different treatments and tonight resorted to the chemical spray rather than the "natural" treatments. Really hope this works...
