Hi, thought I'd start a new thread. Hope ou find this OK!

Just been shopping downtown and bought a fab paid of maternity pants for work.

Also bought "The Baby Name Wizard" as Borders were having 20% off everything. Feel free anyone to ask me a question about names now!! The book categorises them into the following "style families" (chances are if you like one name in the family, you'll like a number of others - e.g. I tend to go for "Antique Charm" names for girls which include Abigail, Adeline, AMelia, Anna. Annabel, Annalise, Ava, Bella, Clara, Daisy, Eleanor, Emma, Eva, Georgia, Grace, Hannah and Isabel):
African, Androgynous, Antique Charm, Bell tones, Biblical, Brisk and Breezy, Celtic, Charms and Graces, Country and Western, English, The -ens, Exotic Traditionals, Fanciful, French, German, Greek, Guys and Dolls, Italian, Jewish, Lacy and Lissome, Ladies and Gentlemen, Last Names First, Latino, Little Darlings, Long Gone, Mid-Century, Modern Meanings, Muslim, Mythological, Namesakes, New Classics, Nickname-Proof, Place-Names, Porch-Sitters, Saints, Scandanavian, '70s and '80s, Shakespearean, Slavic, Solid Citizens, Surfer Sixties, Timeless and Why Not?

Mrswizz · 05/09/2007 16:49

Going on holiday next week to Italy - haven't seen my lady garden for ages (out of sight out of mind) should probably get a wax but can't really be bothered. Blind shaving perhaps.

Bargain Thelady! Just a bit too heavy for my likeing though, but for that price who cares.

suey2 · 05/09/2007 17:03

yes neuro, 27 weeks tomorrow. Big difference on size and discomfort in last 4 weeks

Neuro · 05/09/2007 17:16

Oh blimey. When does the third trimester start?

A reallly really good friend of mine's period is 6 days late and she's doing a test tonight. I am so excited because she is the only other person i know who would have a baby too. Boy am i glad to be past that testing stage. I had a look on the Due in April 08 messageboard and thought awww they're so sweet, feeling sick and worried

Caz10 · 05/09/2007 17:37

Hi all!

Grrr I hate being back at work and away from mumsnet! Have just skimmed through so apologies for missing loads of things, but:

suey2 - you have just answered the question I was about to ask! I am just bang on 26 weeks and still feeling ok, no discomfort in bed etc etc. Keep thinking this can't last long...do the people who are now 28/29ish weeks feel quite different?

Buggies - we have gone for a Mountain Buggy, mainly as we have a great big dog who needs lots of walks, and DH who will be doing a lot of the childcare (he's on shifts) is v sporty and outdoorsy so it needs to be an all-terrain number. The compromise is of course that it is bl00dy enormous, but we are in a wee bungalow and have an estate car, so no stairs/boot issues hopefully. I am still reeling at the cost (comparable with a Bugaboo) but I know we got a good deal compared to some other places, and it should re-sell well.

3rd trimester according to some pregnancy book or other that I looked at last night starts at 28 weeks! so congrats to all those who are there!!

suey2 was America amazing??! so jealous!

Ambi · 05/09/2007 17:45

I've been working on around 26 weeks (40 divided by 3 times 2), I know some of you are end of Dec, but 26 weeks cannot be far away!!

Blimey she keeps kicking like a trooper, even worse when her daddy is talking to me, so now he does it on purpose to get her going!

I've really surprised myself, not really into the whole pink girlie thing at all, but looking for nursery themes and getting swept away with a really cute butterfly theme - I'm super planning my Maternity leave (as if I'm gonna be bored!! - I'll be a walrus hardly able to move!!)

Caz10 · 05/09/2007 17:48

aaaah maternity leave...seems like the unachievable dream at the moment! I'll be in work till the end of Nov, dreading it!!

Baby will be going in a cardboard box in an undecorated nursery at this point! Actually, he/she doesn't even really have a nursery, just a space. I feel so bad, but at the end of the day I guess he or she will not know any different!

Congrats too to whoever had chosen their name - Logan - I think that is a lovely name! Must be nice to know what to refer to bump as too!

becklespeckle · 05/09/2007 18:02

Hi all! Congrats MrsSkidaddle!
Well I have finally managed to reach the 14lb weight gain mark! Hehe! Its amazing for me, I had put on over twice that while pg with DS1! I think though that I am just not carrying a great deal of water as my bump is smaller than it was with the boys(although people keep telling me its huge - I am very short in the body though so baby has nowhere to go but outwards!)and my thighs are still normal sized! I carried a lot of water on my legs and bum when pg with the boys.
I am not finding my bump uncomfortable at night but my hips really are! The pain I have been getting under my bump has now spread to my inner hips (if that makes sense) and I am waddling like a duck at only 24 weeks! I have found that a feather pillow between my legs at night is really helping me sleep well though!
I already have my pram from DS2, it is an Urban Detour 3 wheeler and it is fab, it folds up quite small when the wheels are off of it (easy to get off and on) and great for me as I do a lot of walking! It is a forward facing one but have managed to find a carrycot on ebay for it so thats okay. Not a great one for clumping up and down stairs though.
Hope everyone is okay and will try and keep up a bit more on here now the DSs are back at school/nursery! Off to work now - what fun!

thelady · 05/09/2007 18:36

Agreed - that buggy is heavy, but I thought I'd mention it in case anyone was interested.

Sounds odd, but I'm very grateful for the cool summer this year - hot and muggy the last few days and I'm miserable with it . Can't imagine how my mum coped with 38 degree heat and 90 percent humidity in SA when she was carrying me!

Oh, and I'm 27 weeks and starting to feel like a beetle on its back in bed

cazzybabs · 05/09/2007 19:29

thelady - my parents have a jazz and they can fit my mountain buggy in no trouble. All 5 of us have gone on holiday with it and luggage in the jazz - so the boot space is not that small. Do you have a garage so you can lock your car up with the buggy in the boot so you don't have to lug it up the stairs. I love my MB - I got it from ebay for £250 brand new. It is worth buying a nice one if you spend a lot of time usuing.

The mclaren is also nice and folds up small and is light. Look on kiddicare for cheaper prices!

suey2 · 05/09/2007 21:00

Caz10 i do not think i helped by putting on 10lb in 3 weeks! I was ok before then. But the last 2-3 weeks i ahve noticed rib pain when lying on my side and i really have to bolster up the bump to stop it pulling too much. I am carrying a lot of water in my arms and legs- off to the MW tomorrow for my glucose tolerance test so will make sure that she checks my blood pressure, too.

Calmriver · 05/09/2007 21:44

Hi There, to you all! I was due December last year!06. and had my baby girl in November!!! All so exciting!!! Good luck and enjoy it all!!!!!!!!! My gorgeous little girl is 9 months old now!xxx

insywinsyspider · 05/09/2007 22:24

evening all!

ooohh buggy talk - anyone looking at double buggy's?
We had Quinny Buzz (and still using it) for ds - loved being able to put car seat on it, having carrycot bit and then ds facing me to start with, doesn't fold up v small tho... agree that its a nightmare deciding!

thelady - only go to halfords to look at car seats but for best advice mothercare know their stuff so much better - I work in vehicle safety and was shocked with the mis information the halfords guy was telling me and he obviously had me down as just 'another mum' because he wouldn't listen to me about isofix seats and he was so clearly wrong mothercare were lovely tho I think their training is better

MotherofZ · 06/09/2007 09:08

Morning all!!
Hope you all are well !!

All this talk about buying brand spanking new buggies - we're going to be pulling out our old Graco travel system we used for DD, rom our attic soon. We actually only used that for 6 mths and then switch to a stroller which was so much lighter and easier to manover. Agree that Mothercare is the best at showing how to use car seats and put the base in. When we went the sales assistant demonstrated it for us and then let us have a go.

Weight gain is over 1 stone (is it baby or Gregg's lunches??)

Beginning to feel out of breathe now when walking for about 15 mins or more - make me feel a bit unhealthy.

Little bit worried as DD elbowed me hard in my stomach yesterday and was getting slight pains after. Could feel the baby move after, but still making me feel a little nervous...??

Have a good day all.

Nbg · 06/09/2007 09:29

Mawning girlies.

Hope you are all well.

Is anyone getting really breathless and struggling to breath at times?
I get it worse on a morning. Its really annoying me now.

Cant remember if I mentioned it before but we were looking at double pushchairs last week.
We tried out a Jane Twin two tandem. Its really nice and very light. I'd alos seen one by Peg Perego called the Duette. Its very very nice but we cant see it in the flesh as the only place that sells it is miles away in Essex!

A friend of mine has recommended the Out and about Nipper but its a side by side double which I'm not sure about.

Have got my 28 week appt with my MW tomorrow. I think baby might be transverse so shes going to check that out. I know theres lots of time yet but its worrying.

Is anyone else going for a homebirth? Would love to hear your ideas and plans if you are.

macdoodle · 06/09/2007 09:45

ok I have 3 points

(1) Homebirths I am very anti these - but I am medical and have worked in an obstetric unit so have seen the very quick terrible outcomes when things go wrong - some that cannot be predicted and can cause death or damage to babe or mum in seconds The risks agreed are very small indeed but NOT predictable and I personally would never be able to take the risk on my baby - by the time the midwife has called an ambulance and got you to hospital it may be too late for some complications (stuck shoulders post partum bleed unexpected blue baby to name a few)...sorry to be so grim but even one in a zillion is too high a risk for me but I am a bit neurotic like most medics

(2) out of breath oh yes - but haven't been to gym since I started being sick at about 6 weeks, have put on nearly 2 stone and have this creature using my oxygen just gets worse if I recall

(3) think am gonna go for the silver cross 3D system - the bugaboo is absolutely gorgeous BUT you have to pay for all the extras sun canopy fleece lining car seat adaptors probably another £100 at least and it is a lot of money for a buggy which if I recall will only be for relatively short time then onto cheap light weight stroller - the silver cross IMO is better value and a lovely pram will go shopping with MIl soon - but those getting bugaboos enjoy them you lucky girls am [anvy]

macdoodle · 06/09/2007 09:46

or even

mimicakey · 06/09/2007 09:47

Morning All!

I am looking at the City Elite and Hauck Infinity as Bugaboo alternatives but need to see them in the flesh before deciding. You can get the City Elite from Kiddicare with a carry cot for £260! Anyone ever used either of them?

I like the forward or rear facing options, and they both have a shopping basket, which the Bugaboo doesn't seem to have. Or maybe it's just an extra!

Neuro my friend has the iCandy Apple and it looks lovely (only seen the pram bit) but sounds pretty heavy - she had a cs about 6/7 weeks ago and was still not entirely happy about having to put it in and out of the boot.

It's not a very romantic way to do the shopping (esp for 1st baby) but I think I'm just going to place a massive order at some point on Kiddicare! Changing mats and all that boring stuff are just too cheap not to.

buzzybee · 06/09/2007 09:48

What are your thoughts re homebirth NBG? I definitely want to try for that again but different country I expect will mean different rules.
I found sitting in the bath the best thing last time so might ask MW about hiring a pool next time I see her. I also hired a TENS machine last time but didn't find it very helpful so will skip that.
I gave birth kind of kneeling/leaning over the bed so will prob aim for that again as it seemed to be a good position. Means I need to protect the bed and carpet somehow!

macdoodle · 06/09/2007 09:56

From what I know I think the midwife brings a big plastic sheet etc (the thought of the mess in my house doesn't appeal much either ).....

suey2 · 06/09/2007 10:22

yes. i was offered a home birth, but again working in the medical profession i just wouldn't take the risk. They have a birthing pool etc at the C & W and I know i would be paranoid at home. Having said that, I have taken on board other's advice re staying home as long as poss before going in.

Saw the MW. Baby bang on normal size (YAY) and head down. BP ok and she told me that the leg sweeling is only to be worried about if it doesn't go down after a night's rest/ putting them up. She reckoned it was the heat in london this week.

Another nugget of info- I am really keen to avoid an episiotomy. (particulaly having seen other threads like- 'sex after episiotomy- is it ever the same?- discuss') and she told me about the epi no. Apparently it is used extensively in australia and germany and they are in the process of trialing it at the C & W. Basically it is an inflating thing which stretches you down there. you start at 37 weeks and it can get you to 10cm dilation after using it every day for 5 mins or so. Is costly, but i have ordered. It may be worth asking MWs about as they may have some available for loan in your area if you can't afford it.

But, HURRAH!!!!!!! She told me that the Doreen is not giving me anywhere near enough support and to get myself to rigby's quick sharp and back into underwires. Otherwise i am bound to get loads of stretch marks since my norks are so damned huge now. going this morning.

Mrswizz · 06/09/2007 10:46

Morning All.

I'm all of a fluster this morning. Earlier this year I applied to go on an RHS gardening course but was rejected because all the space was filled up. DH is also doing it, we want to eventually work together. Yesterday they sent a letter saying I had a place and I have to enrol tomorrow! Am I mad? The first term is going to be a nightmare. Goodness knows if I'll be able to study with a little nipper to look after. But I do want to do it and I also want some mental stimulation. I should be able to manage one night a week for an evening class even if my tits are leaking.

Am still thinking of a home birth, can't decide. I guess I'll talk to the midwife nearer the time.

Am 28 weeks today. Third trimester here we come!

buzzybee · 06/09/2007 10:48

Suey, interested that she said LO head down at this early stage was impt? I would have thought still heaps of room to move and therefore likely to change position regardless of where at now? I seem to get kicked absolutely EVERYWHERE so don't believe she can be staying in one position yet - but am only just 25 weeks?

OP posts:
suey2 · 06/09/2007 10:50

sorry, you are totally right. She said that it was head down, but that it could easily change position. I am only extrapolating because it was also head down last time.

buzzybee · 06/09/2007 10:53

Homebirth seems very much personal choice. For me it was a very positive experience, but if you are even slightly anxious at the prospect I wouldn't do it. There are some (small) risks attached and it would be completely understandable not to want to take these. Personally I also think there are risks attached to being in hospital and so far this PG my experience with OBs in hospital have made me want to stay as far away as possible! I know that probably sounds a bit perverse since I decided not to have the amnio due to the small risk of miscarriage but sometimes you just have to do what feels RIGHT for YOU at the time.

If anyone wants to ask me any questions about homebirth am very happy to answer but don't want to be seen as trying to persuade you one way or the other.
