Hi, thought I'd start a new thread. Hope ou find this OK!

Just been shopping downtown and bought a fab paid of maternity pants for work.

Also bought "The Baby Name Wizard" as Borders were having 20% off everything. Feel free anyone to ask me a question about names now!! The book categorises them into the following "style families" (chances are if you like one name in the family, you'll like a number of others - e.g. I tend to go for "Antique Charm" names for girls which include Abigail, Adeline, AMelia, Anna. Annabel, Annalise, Ava, Bella, Clara, Daisy, Eleanor, Emma, Eva, Georgia, Grace, Hannah and Isabel):
African, Androgynous, Antique Charm, Bell tones, Biblical, Brisk and Breezy, Celtic, Charms and Graces, Country and Western, English, The -ens, Exotic Traditionals, Fanciful, French, German, Greek, Guys and Dolls, Italian, Jewish, Lacy and Lissome, Ladies and Gentlemen, Last Names First, Latino, Little Darlings, Long Gone, Mid-Century, Modern Meanings, Muslim, Mythological, Namesakes, New Classics, Nickname-Proof, Place-Names, Porch-Sitters, Saints, Scandanavian, '70s and '80s, Shakespearean, Slavic, Solid Citizens, Surfer Sixties, Timeless and Why Not?

mimicakey, I have the hauck infinity for ds and its fab. I love it. Would really recommend it.

Buzzy, I've bought a birth ball and my MW said she has a TENS that I can have, although I might be able to do without it as mine packed up last time round
I plan to be in the family room for the labour as its all laminate and then probably go into the bedroom as my legs tend to become really weak towards the end of the labour and thats where I get the majority of the pain.
I've never been a big fan for water births, I get the feeling it would annoy me so baths probably out.

I'm just hoping for a quick birth lol.

buzzybee · 06/09/2007 11:12

Me too NBG! Don't think I'd actually give birth in the pool/bath but I did find it the best thing for pain relief in the early stages of labour. Mind you, my early labour last time was through the night which limited my options a bit

Like last time I reserve the right to change my mind at any time during labour though and hot foot it to the hospital...

Thanks Nbg! I saw one in use the other day (Infinity that is, not birth pool!) and it looked really nice.

Nbg · 06/09/2007 11:31

See I really really really dont want to be in hospital.
I want to avoid it at all costs but understand that if things start to go wrong thats where I'll have to be.

macdoodle · 06/09/2007 11:54

No me too don't want to influence people one way or the other home birth is a very personal choice and the risks are very very very small (just have seen the worst outcomes and being already neurotic not for me would panic)....as this is no 2 am hoping for quick birth was loooong with first with episiotomy and ventouse (suey the epis was bloody damn painful afterwards not at time as had epidural on board but TBH sex is still pretty good but then I am horny cow )....this time am planning on staying at home as long as possible, avoiding epidural (if I can but am not good with pain) quick labour and being home 6 hrs later (the best laid plans and all that )...am booked in midwifery led unit in tertiary centre not local hosp across road where I had DD as they are only midwifery NOW so NO back up obs or paeds (might as well be at home)...it is lovely unit with baths etc can walk about - but has obs and paeds unit one floor down if all goes tits up (ha ha)......

As for norks mine are massive at only 24+1 from a tidy but well endowed 36DD to a huge 38 FF/G yikes ...but am now in lovely underwired from Debenhams (not maternity) as need support not diggng in and feel nice and comfy and not too ugly....god knows how big I will get can't remember from DD was so long ago!

mimicakey · 06/09/2007 12:01

I'm booked in for the midwife-led birthing suite but they only have space for two people. It's actually in with the hospital so I think they just send you over the road if there's no space.

Do you think I could call when I go into labour and find out if one of the rooms is free? It's really close to my house so I'm thinking I could stay at home until later if it was all occupied.

Nbg · 06/09/2007 12:36

Mimicakey, I would deffo call them. When your in labour just call them straight away and go in.

MotherofZ · 06/09/2007 13:20

Just curious - but is it really messy having a home birth? I would hate after all the hard work to clear all the bit up.

I've decided for a hosital birth - had Group B Streps in my previous pregnancy too so want to be near all the medical equipment.

Nbg · 06/09/2007 13:23

The MW's get rid of all the messy stuff or so I have been told.

Cant see you being left with Placenta and umbilcal cord

MotherofZ · 06/09/2007 13:39

They might fancy leaving it as a souvenior or if you feel like cooking and eating your placenta......yuck!

claraq · 06/09/2007 13:39

Motherofz - so glad you said you were pulling out old Graco travelsystem to use - we will be doing exactly the same (although not pulling it out, it's already out as we still use it). I know it's not designer or expensive or posh but it's done us well, DD has been happy in it and it's got a great sized shopping basket. Some of those trendy buggies look like slightly sinister contraptions to me!!! And I can't believe how much they cost. £600 for a pram?? My word.

I would love to have a home birth but had a c-section last time so REALLY not worth the risk. It would just be so nice to slide into your own bed after a lovely bath in your own bathroom and have your DH bring you a cup of tea and toast after the birth...Instead I will no doubt be kept awake by other people's screaming babies on a ward which is kept permanantly at a ridiculously high temperature....

Does anyone else who has another child/other children keep forgetting they are actually going to have another baby soon? I can't forget I am pregnant because of the physical side of it (although feel absolutely fine at the moment, probably best I've felt throughout and am nearly 28 weeks). But am so focused on my nearly-2-year-old I just can't factor in another one at the moment!!! Musn't forget to buy it a few things at some point.....

MotherofZ · 06/09/2007 13:41

actually I know someone who took thier placenta home and buried it in thier garden as they didn't agree with the hosiptal's policy of incinerating (sp?) the left overs...

MotherofZ · 06/09/2007 13:46

Claraq - am with you on that one - so busy with DD (21 mths nearly), and other than my size, not as focused on this pregnancy as much as the last one where I used to read all the books etc. To be honest the most I talk about this pregnancy is when I am on Mumsnet (!)- otherwise it's juggling work and home life.

claraq · 06/09/2007 13:50

Yes - in fact being on Mumsnet almost makes me feel like this is the time I am devoting to the new baby as otherwise it just doesn't get a look in! Wonder what it will be like when it is born? I am one of 4 and I gather my youngest brother was pretty much put in a cot or pram in the corner and forgotten about for much of the time (it's a wonder he's not more screwed up than he is!!!).

MotherofZ · 06/09/2007 13:56

lol - I thought the youngest ones are supposed to be the spoilt ones! My younger brother certainly is even at the age of 20!!

suey2 · 06/09/2007 15:14

Ahhh, back from r & p and in nice underwired bra. MUCH more comfortable.
Now i need to get on with booking a night nanny (DH and i compromised- he wanted mat nurse, i wanted nothing) and registering with a nanny agency for return to work next year.

Bailed out of peter jones and the big maternity shop as i was too knackered by then! Good service, apparently though. Can go round with someone who knows what we will need and arrange to get it all delivered after we move. May wait for husband and his credit card for that shop! (Am I naughty?- i seem to have spent a fortune already on all of my own maternity wear etc.)

Mrswizz · 06/09/2007 15:19

My cousin buried the placenta of her first child in the garden, as part of an alternative christening/naming ceremony/party. I think I'll not bother with that.

Mumsnet is the only place I can go on and on about being pregnant. DH isn't interested in me talking about my symptoms. Its understandable, it is really boring unless it is happening to you.

Beanstermummy · 06/09/2007 16:20

Claraq and MotherofZ - exactly the same re. child and home and how this time has been different etc. I keep feeling guilty for not looking in the books and mags every week for development etc and as you say, other than the physical bit, it would be easy to forget. I keep thinking we've got loads to do - sort out nursery, old clothes etc but not got round to any of it. My big Sis said DS2 was basically chilled when little as he had to be - they simply couldn't be at his beck and call 24hrs as with DS1 but he adapted and no worries - jsut thinking back to how I would go all day while DH was at work without going to the loo in case DD woke up or cried...........madness I know. I do feel bad constantly (or so it seems) saying no to DD1 - no Mummy can't do bumps down the stairs, No you can't do horsey on Mummies tummy etc - but she doesn't seem that bothered. Lots of respect and congrats though to single Mums who don't have the other half to palm the physical messing around with onto.

Can't believe I'm28 weeks tomorrow though - beached whale already (although not too bad weight gain wise - around 17 lbs) but feel huge. Can I physically go another 12 weeks???

becklespeckle · 06/09/2007 16:39

I also keep forgetting I am going to have another baby, so busy with the DSs and work and the house... Mind you I was talking to DH the other night about DS2 starting school in January and he said "Blimey, what are you going to do all day?!". I just gave him a hard stare until he said "oh", hehe! Can't believe he can sit looking at me and forget there will be a baby here in 4 months!
My bump seems to have had a real growth spurt and is really high at the moment (although most movement is still very very low). Someone at work said to me last night "Wow, you're bump's really big, what are you now? 6 months gone?" When I told her I was just past 5 months she said "No way! That's a 7 month bump at least!" (hence me waddling away feeling like I had eaten a beach ball).

Bouncingturtle · 06/09/2007 17:24

God Beckle, some people are just soooo rude! However, I think this topic may be done to death lol

suey2 · 06/09/2007 17:53

jeez, the baby has to go somewhere- either up or out. do skinny minnies just breathe out of the tops of their lungs whilst PG?

macdoodle · 06/09/2007 18:18

Suey scuse my ignorance but what does a night nanny do - does she live in and get up to baby in night, does she go away in day, what about breast feeding if you plan to, do you have her from start or later on....sorry just genuinely nosy

becklespeckle · 06/09/2007 18:28

I think you're right Bouncing! Just find it annoying when people constantly comment! Unfortunately for me there is no up for baby to go to as I am short-bodied so out it is! I am quite proud of my big bump!

suey2 · 06/09/2007 18:45

apparently they arrive at say 9pm amd stay until say 7am- times negotiable. they will do
-:

Night feeds

Change nappies

Settle the child

Prepare and sterilise bottles

Dress and prepare the baby in the morning

Give help and advice on getting the baby into a sleep routine

Stay longer in the mornings to allow you a lie-in

Guide older children to sleep through the night

Give advice on breastfeeding

Apparently if you want to BF at night they will bring the child to you, or they will give the child a bottle of expressed milk for the night feed. Sounds good to me
