Expecting twins in 2020?

Passionfruit20 · 16/10/2019 07:37

Is anyone else expecting twins (or more!) in 2020? I just found out I am. They’ll be our first. Technically due in April, although reality means probably March. Would love to share with other mums in the same situation as I’m now reading a whole new set of baby books and articles!

Welcome @Ummusomebody - woah, so many twins in your family! None at all in mine.

@Jahzmine We put our Mountain Buggy together too! I'm impressed with the quality although haven't got the hang of the fold yet. Bump gets in the way! 😂 I don't think we'll bother with carrycots. My first baby was out of his by 4 months so it's a big expense for a short while especially with twins. We have a second cot downstairs for daytime naps so only need the buggy for out & about.

Chaosonthehorizon · 01/12/2019 19:08

Ummusomebody yay another person expecting ‘3 and 4’! Found out about three weeks ago and you do slowly get used to it. Then have the occasional panic (usually when the others are playing up!). What beside bed things are people getting? I would love a babybay maxi as that is what we borrowed last time but too expensive to buy 😓.

Passionfruit20 · 02/12/2019 07:32

@Ummusomebody - at the moment my plan is to go straight to a cot bed for the two of them and skip the bed beside me, but that one you shared looks great! I had never heard of it! So now I’m like, I wonder 😂 we found our cot bed (a Stokke Sleepi) online second hand in great condition, so I recommend looking on eBay.

For those who are already huge (40+ inches! Omg!) how is your back pain? I’m only 19+4 and it’s been a real hassle. I tried swimming on the weekend which was GREAT . Made me feel fabulous for a couple of hours so I’m going to start going twice a week, but wasn’t sure if the back pain set in for the duration or kind of came and went?

Hi

Haven't read full thread, just first couple of pages. We have DS11 and surprise twins due sometime between Christmas Eve and New Year.

Buggies... We've gone for the donkey twin in classic navy. Everything else was so much heavier and much less stylish. Tamba told us to get a side by side not a stacked buggy.

Cars. With a growing DS already, this has been a nightmare. Stuff where you think, I can surely get two car seats and an 11yr old in the back, and a double buggy in the boot, believe me, you can't. We took a new Audi Q7, RR and XC90 literally to Mothercare and tried putting their demo stock in the car. None worked. The bassinet on the pram is the problem.

We've had to buy the 2010-14 Q7 model so we've got the space of two rows of back seats, which don't compromise the boot space.

Morning sickness. With DS I was poorly. With these, I went to the GP genuinely thinking I was dying. Never known anything like it. It passed around week 14.

I think what we've learned so far, is to not over buy because you don't know what you're going to get. Will they turn up at week 32? Week 37? So you have no idea what size clothes to buy.

Will they be in NICU for a few weeks? So you won't need car seats to take them home for a while.

My best advice is to relax. You'll be in hospital a couple of days regardless. In which time, DH, DM, BFF, whoever can nip out and get size/maturity appropriate things to last you the first week. Just get your hospital bag ready from week 31.

Ummusomebody · 02/12/2019 11:01

@SleepingStandingUp the nurse that scanned them said they were non identical but then in the report write mcda so totally confused.
My other kids are 4.5 years old DS and almost 3 years old DD. Do we will be needing a car/van that can take 4 car seats amongst others

Jahzmine · 02/12/2019 12:24

@SleepingStandingUp aww I'm glad to hear that, these pains are frustrating. Both my babies are breech so their heads are in my ribs. So frustrating.

@lifesnotaspectatorsport it's so smooth and slim isn't it! I'm torn between getting carrycots or not, as yousaid they don't stay in them for long. I found it easy to put the buggy up and down but that was when I didn't have a big bump like now lol haven't tried since.

@Passionfruit20 I'm currently 28 weeks and my back pain is frustrating. But believe it or not it's not the worst pains I get, I have spd and that causes lots and lots of groin /pelvix pains. They're almost constant pains, all night and they worsen when you're trying to turn in the bed. Nothing can help really paracetamol doesn't even hardly do anything.

SleepingStandingUp · 02/12/2019 13:05

@Ummusomebody agh that's frustrating, did she mention anything about the position of the placentas to go e you a clue as to whether they are or aren't identical?? They'll def clarify ay the next scan

@Passionfruit20 agree with Jahzmine, my back ache is the least of my worries 🤣 SPD is a killer, and lots of upper stomach muscle ache where the boys are trying to kick their way free. I have pains in my lower back / upper bum cheeks but the pain between my legs is far worse. Feet up into my diaphragm make breathing fun and I keep feeling really claustrophobic weirdly which I think is coupled with the lack of breath

Chaosonthehorizon · 02/12/2019 20:15

Yes, what cars are people getting who are going from 2-4 or more?!!

Ladybug84 · 02/12/2019 22:00

Hi everyone,
Tentatively joining this group, I've read a few pages and it is full of great tips and advice, so thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences.
My story, I went for a reassurance scan on Saturday feeling really anxious after a messy and long MMC last year, only to find out that there is not one but 2 little beans. My dad has a couple of cousins who had twins, but I never imagined I could be carrying twins! These would be our first babies, we're really excited.
I'm back to feeling anxious now after speaking to my MW as she thought it'd be a good idea to mention that unfortunately many twin pregnancies don't make it to 12weeks 🤦🏻‍♀️ of course I went to Dr Google, which did not help at all...
Really looking forward to my next scan in 12days 🍀
Attaching a pic from my scan, I'll be 9weeks tomorrow
xx

BadMomma81 · 02/12/2019 23:37

That's an awesome scan pic, we were so shocked at the 12 week scan we didn't get the pic with both babies on and then the closest I have is bits of them overlapping!!

The thing to remember is a heartbeat at 7 weeks already means the risk of MC is much lower x

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 03/12/2019 03:40

Awww, congratulations @Ladybug84 - what a fab scan photo! Did the sonographer say what type of twins she thinks they are? At 9 weeks and with a heartbeat, the risk of anything going wrong has already dropped dramatically.

twinmum2017 · 03/12/2019 06:55

@Ladybug84 what an unhelpful thing for your midwife to say. Congratulations, and not long to your next scan!

Just popping on to say the twins on your dads side would have had no impact on your chance of having twins anyway so you shouldn't have been expecting it! The genetic link is the woman's ability to produce multiple eggs so it's only twins on your mothers side that can 'run in families'
This is for fraternal twins. I didn't know this before I had twins and find it so fascinating!

ID twins are of course just fluke!

BadMomma81 · 03/12/2019 09:27

Id twins are weird. I get producing two eggs and two down getting lucky. But one egg splitting entirely then continuing to grow normally is odd (sorry darling sons 2 and 3). I'm mean amazing too of course but still, odd 😂

Ladybug84 · 03/12/2019 22:20

Awww thanks a lot for your messages, the sonographer kept saying how clear the image was. It was a wonderful moment.

@BadMomma81 @lifesnotaspectatorsport thanks for the positivity, it does really make a difference to be reminded of the good side of things. The sonographer said they are fraternal twins, she went on to explain what the sacs were and the membranes inside of each sack. What do you think?

@twinmum2017 I guess she wanted to keep it realistic, but it's the last thing that someone who has already suffered a loss wants to hear... 😬 I find genetics fascinating. I've spent all weekend reading about it as I thought like you that it couldn't be possible having no history of twins on my mum side. I found a few articles saying that "if a father passes on the hyperovulation gene to his daughter, then she may have a higher chance than normal of having fraternal twins". I'm also 35 yo so who knows... nature is amazing 😍

Have any of you experienced bleeding/spotting? I've had a few odd days with brown/red/pink discharge since week 6. It started again on Friday and it hasnt stopped since... MW said not to worry as the scan showed things are okay
Xx

SleepingStandingUp · 03/12/2019 23:56

No spotting etc but know lots of women who have had it through pregnancy with no worries.

I assumed fraternal as they're not positioned to be sharing a placenta. That's another thing in your favour, fraternal twins (DCDA twins) are lower risk than identical (MCDA or MCMA)

twinmum2017 · 04/12/2019 08:04

That's so interesting @Ladybug84, hard to believe a male could pass on the gene for ovulation!

I had bleeding at 6 ish weeks but I always put it down to losing our second embryo (we were ivf with two embryos put back but have ID twins so only one embryo took and then split!

Passionfruit20 · 04/12/2019 08:56

I never had anything more than maybe a dot of blood twice or twice @Ladybug84 but I similarly I’ve read about lots of people who had way more spotting and were fine. I think it’s pretty common. Fingers crossed for you!

@BadMomma81 that made me laugh so much! I sometimes think the same with my 20 week MCDA girls, like, how did you spontaneously combust into two? 😂
I’m also an IVF’er @twinmum2017 although I only had one embryo put in and it split. I’ve heard it’s more common in ivf pregnancies because the embryo gets bashed around a little more, but you’re the first ID twin IVF’er I’ve met I think!

SleepingStandingUp · 04/12/2019 11:49

(ne change fail as BadMomma)
My son has a mosaic chrosmome condition so the cells duplicated as normal but one cell aquired a mutation and then kept splitting with its dodgy chromosomes so only some of his cells are affected. So I already have tiny mutant and now with identical twins i feel like I've got a set - my home made clones!! 😂😂👶🏻👶🏻

Struggling today, lots of pains between my legs and in my tummy 😢

twinmum2017 · 04/12/2019 14:41

@Passionfruit20 I really enjoy answering the personal question of 'ah twins, did you have fertility treatment?' (Yes, honestly, it really happens) with the full scientific explanation of how ID twins are formed and the affect the IVF could have had! Most people wish they had never asked! 😂

I do sometimes think about what life would have been like if we'd not lost the other one.... or if that had split too!! 4!!

@SleepingStandingUp I've never heard of that before, it does sound very clone like in your household! How does the condition affect him?

Passionfruit20 · 04/12/2019 15:36

@twinmum2017 I like your strategy! I’ll just plan to overwhelm people with lots of detail. Maybe throw in a, “have you heard of a transvaginal ultrasound?” if I really wanna freak them out 😂

OP posts:
twinmum2017 · 04/12/2019 17:38

Haha yes that'll do it! Grin
If people are rude enough to ask that question then they deserve the detail!

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 04/12/2019 18:33

@Ladybug84 I had spotting twice a bit later on in pregnancy (15-16 weeks) - was very worried but it turned out to be nothing. Still don't know what caused it 🤷🏻‍♀️

We're having fraternal twins too - boy and girl. Even after I tell people the sexes though, the follow-up question is still 'Are they identical?' 😂 Erm, nooo...

SleepingStandingUp · 04/12/2019 18:44

@twinmum2017 the biggest issue for him was he was born with a congenital Diaphragmatic hernia so he was missing 90% of the diaphragm on the right side so he was born with a collapsed lung as the intestines were in the lung cavity and then shortly after birth hosl over followed suit.

I've skipped dinner to have a bath my back hurts that much

twinmum2017 · 04/12/2019 20:00

When is your induction/c section date @SleepingStandingUp ?

Gosh how scary for you. I hope he is doing well now.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/12/2019 20:20

C Sec is 13th

Yeah, he's in constant o2 and partially PEG fed but he's smart, funny, in mainstream school and awesome
