wnedyredhead - bleeding was in first pregnancy, none in second this one is my third still can't get my head around it. I don't know if I would have been brave enough to have a HB the first time, you just don't know how it's going to go and how you will react. My first labour was 4h 20m start to finish so this time I knew it would be quicker. Another reason for a HB was that DP could be with me as if I had gone into hospital he would have had to look after DD1. A MW said to me that she didn't support HBs in first timers as she said she needed to know that a woman could dilate and fit a baby through her pelvis as for some women it doesn't happen. There is an excellent site about homebirths I will dig around for it www.homebirth.org.uk it's excellent for answering all the questions about safety.

wendyredhead · 26/07/2007 23:23

Sweetykitty: thanks for that brilliant info. I'll check it out. Sorry about mix-up & really hope it's something and nothing...aah the joys of pregnancy..not!

This is my 2nd pregnancy and I delivered normally first time round but it was very quick so that worries me. I dilated fast and the whole thing was over before I realised what was going on! So I might be a perfect candidate for a H/B. Will speak to m/w but she didn't even ask me! Now you've given me another decision to add to the equation .x

HolidaysQueen · 27/07/2007 08:18

Hi all -
Seems lots of people are talking about nuchal fold and dh and i were just talking about that this morning over brekkie (such exciting conversations once you're expecting!). We're trying to decide whether to do it or not - live in London so need to pay. Just wondered why you guys did it? We're not sure whether having the test is worthwhile - if our risk goes up significantly then I'll just stress, but we wouldn't decide to have an abortion if it had DS so not sure what the good of having the test is. I'll be 31 on due date so my risk of DS is supposedly 1 in 800, so not sure it's worth having the test. What does anyone think? Why are you having / not having the nuchal fold test?
HQ xx

Rachel1963 · 27/07/2007 08:28

Wendy RH - I think you just need to say that you want the scan plus bloods, nose bone measurement etc. Your GP should be able to refer you or I think the Fetal Med Centre will let you self refer.

Holidays Queen - I had the scan for age reasons. Being over 40 my risk had shot up to something like 1 in 30. I know plenty of people in their late 20s/early 30s who don't bother having the scan for other than dating reasons.

derah · 27/07/2007 08:54

Morning ladies!

I'm feeling positively bouncy today (which of course has me worrying, why aren't I tired? - aaaargh!). I rode my bike to work, and it's such a lovely day that I really enjoyed it and seemed to go faster than usual.

It's Friday, and the sun is out, YAY!!

merryberry · 27/07/2007 09:04

Bit sick of being sick now. Feel sorry for ds, being short-changed by me not my usual self.

Had a brief respite yesterday - didin't feel bad between 10am and 7pm. OH MY GOD - I was soooo hungry as I don't each much when feeling rough. I ate an extra b'fast a huge lunch EIGHT crumpets, tested the dinner risotto very very thoroughly when cooking it mid afternoon and then couldn't eat it with dp as nausea was back. I assume it was morning sickness...but looking at my diet yesterday it could have been the overeating.

Oh well. Hoping this will lift later today, am off with very good friend to nights at the zoo tonight. Afraid I will want to come home very early. Anyone else's social life completely gone to pot?

hi all. will read down later once boyo's a bed, but the cat's well out of the bag my end now after going out last night - manaegd to get away with no drinking what so ever then a friend says to a diff one are you the only one pg here and friend looks to me - so well out of the bag now! lol. a third friend was upset i'd not told her but I wanted to a know for sure and also she had a BFP and then m/c about 6 days after I had mine so I was trying to be a bit sensitive iycwim. anyhow.

re the nuchfold scan we've pretty much decided the same as with DS - tbh it doesn't matter to us either way - I wouldn't have an amnio so to that end we opted not to have it and just stick wiht a dating scan. what will be will be

re the blood work - this is going to prob sound odd but for those with more than 1 are you having the full works again? wiht DS I was offered the whole HIV etc as well, and was thinking is it worth going for that again - althou I did have a blood transfusion with DS. but apart form that no other partners etc.

anyhow off to tescos. talk later on

LoveAndSqualor · 27/07/2007 10:30

Morning all -

sweetkitty, v sorry to hear about bleeding - how are you feeling today? I had cramps all of last night, which made me somewhat nervous, but they seem to have subsided today ... It's a stressful time, isn't it?

On the plus side I had my doc's appt and am hopefully going to get an early scan to establish exactly how far along I am, which will be a relief - I told my mum last night (she was thrilled) but felt a bit daft not being able to say how many weeks I was!

Very bad luck indeed to all the sick people - I'm definitely finding smells are getting stronger and I need to be out of the kitchen when cooking's going on! Happily DP is a kitchen maestro, so I don't generally spend much time in there anyway ..

Good fridays to you all!

WinkyGirl · 27/07/2007 10:36

Merryberry My social life is always pants when I am pg. I get awful sickness/indigestion if I eat anything after 6.30pm and I go to bed at 9pm. Its fine after we tell everyone because we can work around it. BUT we have been invited out to dinner in a few weeks with all my old mates and their partners. Am just going to have to lie and say we cannot find babysitters!

Am feeling tired and sick like everyone else. But also really constipated.

Pipsqueeke I think my mw automatically does all the same bloods. I guess it is standard in Hants. Does anyone else find it annoying that different health authorities offer completely different scans/tests and stuff?

Anyway, love to all on this sunny Friday. I am off to see a friend. xx

cricri · 27/07/2007 11:53

Morning all (just!)

Rachel1963 and others - thanks for your comments on nuchal fold scan, most helpful.

I think in the end it's a personal decision whether to have it or not. DH with his family history wants to know and we'll deal with the result once we know.

Winkygirl - I also find it very annoying that different health authorities offer different scans etc. One of my pg friends where I live is still waiting for a date for her first scan and at this rate won't get it until 12 weeks is well past. Which is also
why I'm considering going private for the nuchal fold scan as I can't wait that long, plus they don't offer it locally where I live. I also assume they will be able to date the baby at the same time (I'm still a bit clueless as you can tell ) Obviously paying is not an option for everybody though and it shouldn't be like this.

Off for lunch with friends now - can cope with socialising during the day but evenings are a no-no due to the fact I might fall asleep in my dinner! Good luck at the zoo Merryberry. Hope everybody else is OK.

fitzfrodo · 27/07/2007 12:01

Merryberry you stay up til 9 i am in bed for at least 7....going hime from work feel too shite to carry on today (had to book 1/2 day) and dh was a complete and utter w*ker this morning because he has stopped smoking and thinks the effing world revolves around him and his mood!

Might get on this aft when i've cleared the dump we call home (but before i pick up kids from nursery!)

xx

monthlymayhem · 27/07/2007 12:07

Hello, hope everyone is having a good Friday Still no 'proper' pg symptoms, which I know I should be thankful for but can't help worrying!! Even my sore boobs have tailed off (although at this rate if I keep prodding them, I'm sure they'll be sore again by the end of the day).

Does anyone else feel like they are going to wish away the next few weeks until the 12 week mark? Every day seems to be getting longer!! I'm going on holiday in 3 weeks which should help but I can't even get excited about that at the moment!

Sweetkitty, hope you managed to get a scan today to reassure you?

Loveandsqualor - I've been having stomach cramps, much like period pains, for the last few weeks and asked the gp about them this week and she said it was nothing to worry about unless any blood/spotting appears in which case it should be checked out. Apparently it's just our insides stretching!

wendyredhead · 27/07/2007 12:20

HolQueen: reason I personally want the nuchal scan is, like Rachel1963, because of my age & I want to be prepared for all eventualities. Because I'm such a laid back person then I won't be affected by the results but for those of you who are worriers then I can see why you wouldn't go ahead!!

If results were good then great, if they were not so good then I'd prepare myself mentally. But there's no way I want an amnio so this seems a much better option.

Rachel: cheers for that info re nuchal x

Derah: thanks for putting my mind at rest-I wondered what on earth that yellow thing in the sky was so it's probably that that's made you bounce so! Hope it lasts

Psqueeke: not yet got to blood test research! Am reading so much at moment that my brain is nigh exploding with tmi on pregnancy.

Make the most of this wonderful but rather blowy day xxx cheerybye

LoveAndSqualor · 27/07/2007 12:21

monthlymayhem, thanks! Very reassuring. one of the (million) things I forgot to ask my gp about yesterday .. know what you mean about wishing the time away ..

Fitzfrodo, grrrr to your DH!

merryberry · 27/07/2007 12:55

I'm a bit confused about when the nuchal scan can take place myself. Different sites say different things. The fetal medicine centre says you can do nuchal fold from 11 to 13+6 weeks. I hope that is right, cos I will be 13+3 when I get mine. Will check with midwives when I see them next week. And especially as I am erm, rather plump I know that sometimes effects how well they can scan.

Anyway, another half day done on the way to the second trimester...and i haven't been sick, HOORAY!

My mate who is going to the zoo with me is texting about it like crazy. Lots of bad rhymes involving gorilla poo. She is so excited, its sweet. Especially given she is 33 and a barrister. Hasn't been to a zoo since she was child, apparently.

HolidaysQueen · 27/07/2007 13:06

wendyredhead - i think you've hit the nail on the head there for me - i'm a total worrier, as is dh, and so i think if we had the scan and it showed our risk was even just 1:799 vs the 1:800 for my age, then even an increased risk as small as that would make me worry about what i've done or not done right!!! as neither of us thinks the scan would make a difference to going ahead with pregnancy, we'll probably decide not to know. i'm much better at dealing with things when the unexpected happens and sorting out practicalities as needed rather than worrying myself beforehand over things that i can't control. wish i could absorb some of your laidbackness through cyberspace

monthlymayhem, loveandaqualor - cramps and funny tummy feelings are one of the few symptoms i've been getting consistently. if the intensity of the cramps and stretches and weird feelings are anything to go by then my baby hates it when i am sat upright working and loves it when i'm lying on the sofa

i'm having a lovely friday - work not too busy, feeling not too tired and just eaten my favourite sandwich for lunch. off for a cuppa and friday chocolate brownie now. i'm off to my parents this weekend - will be telling them they're going to be grandparents!!! hope you all have good weekends

imjin100 · 27/07/2007 13:16

so excited it's friday, have nothing very exciting to report from this end except to agree with all on wishing time to fly by...that said am determined to enjoy life with just the two of us so have already planned sunday morning almond croissants and the news paper in bed...sorry for all those with little people already!
enjoy the lack of rain and hope everyone has a healthy weekend. Roll on the end of the day!

preggersagain · 27/07/2007 13:55

of the sunday lye-ins! i'm hoping dh will take the kids in the morning and let me have a long sleep! went to sleep at 10 last night, dh came up at 11.45 and i punched him when he tried to move me over a bit!

studentmum1 · 27/07/2007 13:59

hi, i'm panicking, i'm on april thread but thought it was busier here for some one to help me! i'm bleeding, is this normal or am i losing this baby? i've literally just started telling friends and family and i have just found blood... i have a doctors appointment in two hours (soon as they could get me in!) but can some one put my mind at ease? or should i be worried?

Lcy · 27/07/2007 14:02

HI Student mum try not to panic (easier said than done). How much blood and what colour?

xx

studentmum1 · 27/07/2007 14:08

like the first day of your period, browny colour

preggersagain · 27/07/2007 14:12

dark blood often isn't as bad as bright red blood, it may be implantation bleeding etc- don't panic, unfortunatly there is nothing that can be done, BUT quite a few people hve already had bleeds and have come through them fine!

thinking of you

Lcy · 27/07/2007 14:13

Ok - i had quite a lot of brown blood (starting week 5 - and still having a bit now in week 7 more like a a discharge). I was really scared - my first visit to GP i was told to wait and see what happened in case it was a miscarriage - in which case it would probably turn red.

After a week of still bleeding i went back midwife booked me into an early pregnancy unit to get it checked out. Baby was fine.

I was told that brown blood is much better than bright red - but you are doing the right thing checking it out with the doctor.

studentmum1 · 27/07/2007 14:14

because doctors couldn't fit me in for another 2 hours, i've missed a step and rang the hospital who have told me to head over a & e straignt away.

Lcy · 27/07/2007 14:14

Oh yes and i was told at EPU that it was probably an implantation bleed.
