Is anyone else being tested for GD? I've got my glucose test next week and I'm terrified it's going to be positive

EverythingNow · 22/04/2019 09:46

@bubblegumunicorn me. I'm being tested Monday. I've never been tested in previous pregnancies but my babies have all been large. I think I'm being tested this time due to my bmi and also my last baby being 9lb 10.

Aside from big babies I haven't had any symptoms of GD with any of them so we will see. Good luck.

Blueberry2018 · 22/04/2019 14:32

@PinkLady89x I really wouldn't worry hun. I started feeling my baby girl around 18 weeks, definite little kicks anyway. Im now nearly 25 weeks and i feel her mostly every day and at night she goes crazy, i have also experience her having hiccups twice which is quite rhythmic and different to the kicks, much softer. I have had 3 occasions in the past 2 weeks of being off work where I thought 'gosh i havent felt her in hours'. The first 2 times putting my feet up and having a snack got her moving a teeny bit but she was still quite quiet, the last time ( a few days ago) i felt her once at 10am and nothing then until midnight- i was so so worried and my husband was saying 'she'll be fine' but midwife had told me to get checked if outside of her normal pattern.... anyway at about 2am she woke me up having a complete disco in my tummy, strongest movements i have ever felt, she was going for it for a good hour! So i guess what im saying is they just like to rest and worry us sometimes. Im nearly 25 wks and she seems to be much more active at night than day but i am still finding her pattern hasnt really settled into one yet. I try nt to worry but it is hard!!! X

Blueberry2018 · 22/04/2019 14:33

@ScotsBaby2 I agree, lots I have read said 28wks is when it begins to settle into a pattern although i guess every pregnancy and baby is different!

sacrecoeur0712 · 22/04/2019 17:43

@bubblegumunicorn I'm also having the GTT test and worried it will be positive. I'm having it because of my age but I've been told that because I have polycystic ovaries I have a higher chance of having GD. Good luck for yours, mine's not for a few weeks.

bubblegumunicorn · 22/04/2019 18:07

I hate waiting for it I wish they hadn't told me at my 12 week scan that I would be getting it and just sent a letter closer to the time I'm getting it because my dad has type two but that doesn't really worry me in it's self as he has an extreme alcohol problem and had been warned for years that his pancreas was pickled before it finally broke and he ended up with type two so I think I'm being silly worrying about GD I just hate tests like that 😕

ScotsBaby2 · 23/04/2019 07:27

@bubblegumunicorn I'm having fasting bloods in 4 weeks time. It's routine here, everyone in our authority gets them.

Blueberry2018 · 25/04/2019 06:36

I have my next midwife appointment at 28 weeks and she said 'just to warn you there are blood tests at the next appointment'- i hate needles and she knows this which i think is why she gave me the heads up... but i didnt think to ask if its the glucose test?! Is this done via bloods? She didnt tell me to fast or anything so maybe its different bloods?!

bubblegumunicorn · 25/04/2019 07:19

@Blueberry2018 I think the glucose is bloods you fast the night before and they check your blood sugar so I'm not sure if it's the finger prick test or if they will actually take bloods! It's done at the hospital in the trusts near me and it was set up at my first scan by the consultant you could probably request one if you are worried about GD but if you don't have any symptoms you probably are okay :)

Jelliestogether · 25/04/2019 08:48

@Blueberry2018 in my maternity notes I've got a form for my blood tests that I'm meant to have at 27 weeks, for me it's not the glucose tolerance test it's just routine bloods (a bit like bloods at booking in appointment).

Blueberry2018 · 25/04/2019 21:42

@Jelliestogether and @bubblegumunicorn thanks guys, i think maybe its just routine bloods then like at the booking in appointment. I have no family history of diabetes so am not concerned about GD.

keebo · 25/04/2019 21:43

@sacrecoeur0712 I was thinking if you today. I hope the stitching has gone well.

Has anyone done any successful pushchair investigations? We've found a few travel systems online but finding actual shops that stock them seems to be quite hard. The Mothercare shops near us aren't that big and John Lewis seems to only stock systems for £800 or over (which we weren't planning on spending). Has anyone found any other shops that are good for trying out different brands?

MrsRyan15 · 25/04/2019 21:50

@keebo where do you live? The baby show is at the NEC Birmingham in May, I've just been having a look at the exhibitor list and lots of the pram brands are listed.

We've done some online research and hoping to actually see / try them and maybe get a good deal at the show.

Blueberry2018 · 26/04/2019 06:08

@keebo Yes, the baby show has a buggy track to try buggies out on. They will have a massive range to look at. Then you could purchase online if cheaper, once you've tried it out. If you're not far from birmingham that is!

keebo · 26/04/2019 06:20

@MrsRyan15 and @Blueberry2018 I'd forgotten about the baby show. We're not that far from Birmingham but that weekend is DH's bday and we'd already invited a massive house full of people to come for the weekend. I've suggested we kick them out early and head to B'ham for Sunday afternoon... Not ideal but might be an option. Thanks for the reminder!

sacrecoeur0712 · 26/04/2019 06:50

@keebo thanks for checking in. I got s phone call last week to say the senior consultant had reviewed my notes and wanted to delay the stitch and rescan first.
I had a scan yesterday and cervical length has improved since last week (it changes slightly because it's a muscle which contracts and expands, and a couple of millimetres makes all the difference.) I've got another scan on Monday to review again. It's a tricky decision because I'm right on the borderline. I'm feeling a bit better though knowing I might not be having the procedure but we'll see what Monday brings.

Re buggies and pushchairs - I ordered mine at the Surrey baby and toddler show a couple of weeks ago, after finding the same - hardly any shops exist any more with a large selection, they're all online. I narrowed down the one I thought I wanted from a list of Mumsnet top 10 compact pushchairs, or something like that. Having done this before I knew I wanted something very lightweight, compact, that folds in one piece as with both other dc's I ended up switching to a lightweight stroller after a while for convenience. I've chosen the Maxi Cosi Laika and will use with the carrycot insert for the first 6 months - it was less than £300 including the carrycot (got a discount for ordering at the show).

bubblegumunicorn · 26/04/2019 07:50

With pushchairs I spoke to a few friends who said you can really waste money on them as they grow so fast we went for a bounty offer on precious little one and the seat converts from carry cot to stroller so no need to store a carry cot! It also came with a car seat a bassinet/seat and a next to me crib for £300 so figured even if it is rubbish it was cheap then after 6 months we can switch to a lightweight anyway we couldn't find many to test out and our local mothercare has now closed down so we are a bit stuck with being able to go in and view!

EverythingNow · 26/04/2019 16:38

@keebo because I'm on my 4th pram purchase I was pretty certain about what I wanted so decision was relatively easy.

Dd1 I had a Graco travel system. I hated it, she was far to heavy to lug about in a car seat so I very quickly moved to a fixed seat and just used the buggy. It was 18yrs ago and they were the fashion.

Dd2 I had a beautiful silver cross sleepover, went to a pram shop and tried it out. When I got it home the practicality of trying to put the bloody thing up and down meant I quickly hated it.

Dd3 is 17m younger than dd2 so I got a babyjogger city mini double and i loved it. 8yrs ago the accessories such as bassinet, and car seat adapters were not available in the UK so I made do with a Graco carrycot clipped in. We used it until the girls were quite big say 3 and 4 on family days out. I used it to childmind, then I passed it on to a friend. It was fab.

For baby I've bought another babyjogger because I'm confident it will last him until he's 3-4, I've also bought the car seat adapter and the bassinet because I like it when babies get to lie flat and roomy and also we will do a lot of walking. It is also super easy to fold and is reasonably small folded down!

Fuppy · 26/04/2019 18:49

@sacrecoeur0712 I'm glad things appear to be looking up a little for you. I was anxious I might have to have the same procedure, no ones checked mine though, and luckily no signs this time!

Re: prams etc. You've all got me a bit worried, I've had my eye on a travel system online (seems to fit my needs), nowhere to try it out. Have I been naive for not worrying about it's weight etc until now? Does it make more or less of a difference if you do/don't drive?

Mondayblues7 · 26/04/2019 20:00

@bubblegumunicorn how was the travel system from precious little one? I bought my Moses basket from there and was impressed but was nervous about buying the travel system as it seemed to good to be true.

I would be interested to hear what you thought.

bubblegumunicorn · 26/04/2019 20:33

@Mondayblues7 it's really good actually it's sturdy and lightweight we got a kinderkraft one I would recommend using them definitely :) and the deals are good!

I brought the bugaboo fox, spending a small fortune on it but I love it for a variety of reasons and I think it'll suit us and our lifestyle well, including walking the dog etc.

Glad they're delaying the stitch for you! Fingers crossed they can just monitor your cervix for you!

sacrecoeur0712 · 27/04/2019 08:16

@fuppy thanks. Glad to hear you don't need to have similar. I'm symptomless too but I think it's because my measurements are outside the normal range that I get such close monitoring. I had exactly the same with DS2 and the pregnancy went full term, so I keep reminding myself of that. I think the high level of monitoring can cause more anxiety in a way but I do appreciate them keeping an eye on things.

Don't overthink too much about the buggy - I was happy with my first travel system and did use it for both the other two, I'm just conscious that with 3 children space and finances are at a premium, so that's why I'm keen to get something smaller etc. Smile

ScotsBaby2 · 27/04/2019 08:36

@Fuppy depends what you are looking at. I have the Joolz Geo. With carry cot it's about 12kg and with seat it's 11ishkg. It's heavy but it's done exactly what we needed it to do. Ours mostly lives in the boot and we take it in and out when needed. What are you looking at? Do you drive?

OP posts:
Bakingabean · 27/04/2019 08:57

For the buggy we went and tested them at the baby show. None of them really grabbed us until we saw the Bababing one. It's not a big brand and they only have one type. What really sold it was that DP managed to fold and unfold it with one hand while holding an armful of stuff. It hasn't arrived yet so I can't say if I still love it!

Also anyone else with awful carpel tunnel? My right hand/forearm is agony most of the night and morning. So much so I had to buy a splint. Driving me mad!
