Hope this works....! Here's hoping July is the month for

  • proper bumps not fat looking tummies
  • feeling them move!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
PBirdy · 04/07/2007 10:27

I am impressed by how organised some of you are! My mum is superstitious about having baby things in the house before it is born, so there is nothing in my flat as of yet. I was going to wait a bit longer before I started buying things (I still can't actually believe I am pg although that sounds so stupid because of course I know I am, but you know, seems so unreal as well (can you tell I am a first timer?)!).

My mum had to own up to having already gone a bit crazy when she saw a sale on at Boots and she snapped up some stuff that she will keep at her house.

I have seen a lot of people in our area pushing those buggaboo prams and I quite liked the look on them and then I found out that they cost £599!!!! OMG big shock. Any of the already mothers got good tips on that?

thelady · 04/07/2007 10:27

Out of those loooooooooong lists, can anyone help me decipher what's really needed in the first month or two, and what's for later, please?

LO will be sharing our room as we only have one bedroom, so storage is going to be a huge issue, and I don't want to spend money now on something I'm going to trip over (and curse at) for six months

Still no flutters here at 18 wks, but apparently this is probably because my placenta is anterior (at the front) and I'm fairly cuddly too! The midwife also said that if you didn't stop to relax, you probably wouldn't feel anything either - certainly applies to us at the moment.

I really really want to buy all sorts of things for this baby, but neither the money nor the space are available: please share what you're getting so I can enjoy some virtual shopping.

PBirdy · 04/07/2007 10:28

Oh and yes, absolutely fantastic that alan johnston is free. Amazing

Neuro · 04/07/2007 10:29

I own nothing except a cute outfit for a 6 month old.
It's ages away. I'm not going to panic. I feel a bit superstitious anyway, but I have lost a baby before, so...think i'm holding back on buying anything just yet.
And yes, Suey2 it's amazing about Alan Johnson. He was captured when I conceived! I expect his name will stick in my mind forever now.
Don't think i'll be calling my baby Alan though...

TELLING THE BOSS: He's come in again in a really grumpy mood and i know it is all down to his home life. I feel sorry for the guy, but it's awful the way his rocky relationship has such an effect on our little office. So, as i really want to tell him and don't think i can hide it another week, i've photocopied the scan pics and written I wanted to tell you first, bit nervous about telling you, but hope you're happy for me.

That sounds alright doesn't it? I don't work for a big scary corporation, so can afford to be casual about it. Will do official dates with him once i've got this bit out the way.

PBirdy · 04/07/2007 10:33

Neuro - that sounds really sweet the way you are planning on telling your boss. Just a little word of warning from my experience, everyone in the office may respond differently and not all of them positively! As for the meanies, you just have to remember that it is about them not about you - so if he is a bit grumpy about it, just try to go with the flow. Hope it goes well though!

suey2 · 04/07/2007 10:47

Re what you need.
We were having dinner with some pals and I was getting het up and hormonal about not being able to nest: our pals said that you can get everything you need for a newborn in half an hour! So have been more chilled out since then.
Would love to stockpile, but we have got 5 months to go

Neuro · 04/07/2007 10:53

NO Suey2, stockpiling is bad for your health! Sorry to others who are already doing it! Are you running backwards and forwards clucking over it all? And counting things?
Your friend is right, i'm sure all of it can be bought v quickly.
I'm going to be a gypsy new mother anyway and spend most of maternity leave away visiting mum, dad (seperated) and poss baby's father's family if we're even speaking by then. So it's gonna be a moses basket, nappies and the things you put babies in. Are they called babygrows?
I'm rubbish! Poor little mite isn't going to have a lot for ages....but i'll be a single mum on hardly any money. I'll make up for it in cuddles.

Neuro · 04/07/2007 10:55

the envelope to my boss is still sitting on my desk....!

And Suey2 if you want to nest, why don't you have a dejunk of your own stuff so you've got even more space for your new arrival?

Is having to clean a lot part of nesting too?

suey2 · 04/07/2007 11:00

I do agree, neuro, now i have appreciated that i am being a bit hormonal. my pals said that moses basket, babgros/ sleepsuits, nappies and swaddling things were the only essentials. Ooh and nursing bras too.
I went a bit nuts with buying some maternity stuff quite early, some of which don't work, so am happy to be very basic with my LO and only get other things i need when i need them. I don't have to worry about money, though and I have a wonderful husband, so I know I am vvvvvvvvvv lucky not to have to 'pace myself' and buy things gradually.

Caz10 · 04/07/2007 11:03

Good luck Neuro. I'm sure your boss will be fine, but it is still a scary moment eh?!

Re buying things, I have no nesting instinct at all, just more a no-money-panic-instinct! Have been making do until now by putting away what little money is left at the end of each month rather than actually buying things with it. So when I feel ready to buy things we should have some money sitting there for it. Eek!!

But I'm sure the things that are actually needed in the 1st 6 weeks or so are only a fraction of these big lists...

I hope....

morning ladies we are chatty today arent we

didnt have a greatng nights sleep but dreaming of prams and baby things made me wake up smiling, better than the weird dream i had the other night, about elephants and hippos coming out the ground of my grans garden and i snake with a head at each end wwwwwwwweeeeeeeeiiiiiiiirrrrrddd

suey2- its true you dont have to be mega organised im just obsessed, been waitng to buy things since dd2(4) was about 6 months old so to me ive been waiting long enough already

neuro- definately second the clearing out thing makes me feel really maternal, crazy i know, have took so much of dp junk (what he would call v.improtant things) to charity shops lately other wise lo will have no where to sleep never mind put its clothes.also true about the clucking over baby things but i still have my own place across the road so try to leave stuff there so i dont get tempted to stare at them all day.

motherofz- so pleased for you feelin some movements

housemum- how old is dd2 2 then? mine are 7 and 5 in 2 wks so not much around of theirs from babies got the odd thing i saved but dd2 is summer baby so hers arent suitable.
we only have 2 bedrooms and dd's already share and its like a box its tiny so lo will share with us unless we win the lottery.

suey2 · 04/07/2007 11:30

oo yes- GOOD LUCK neuro with telling your boss.

MamaMaiasaura · 04/07/2007 11:42

good luck with boss Neuro

Thelad - I had a 1 bed house with ds for the first year. We managed ok as wanted him in our room for first year (planning at least 6 months for this one). Suprisingly his things didnt take up a lot of room either. You'll be fine.

Just been shopping as friend's baby shower on Sunday - she is due end of the month Got a little dragon activity soft toy for her baby. Want to get her something but not sure what she would really like. Thinking of some pampering toiletries. Also do i get something small for dad too? Decided to leave buying her LO baby clothes till the baby arrives so I can get something gender specific.

Am feeling better here, drinking lots o flush system too. Got lots of ironing to do. Not looking forward to weekend as DP off to Japan for 2 long weeks, means he'll miss 16 week appt, my birthday and my graduation.

MamaMaiasaura · 04/07/2007 11:42

opps meant Thelady

BecklePhoenixBird · 04/07/2007 11:57

I have not bought anything yet for this babe! Will probably start collecting a few bits after the 20 week scan.
I already have a pushchair and a cot (although need a new mattress).

My essentials list would be...
for baby
Cot (baby can go into it straight away)
Pushchair or sling
Car seat (if you go anywhere by car)
8-12 vests/bodysuits
8-12 babygrows
socks (for winter babies)
2 sets of cot sheets/blankets
pram blanket
some kind of coat to wrap baby in to go out
steriliser
dummies
bottles (just in case)
couple of cartons of ready mixed formula (just in case)
nappies, wipes and nappy sacks
for you
breast pads
nursing bra
Kamilosan (nipple cream)
few packs of Always Ultra!
Safety pins (to help keep maternity trousers up!)

I would say if it is your first baby then don't go mad on clothes as people will buy you loads and they are not in newborn for long! I would also buy a couple of 0-3 month things in case baby is big, DS2 was only in Newborn for 2 days!

Neuro · 04/07/2007 12:09

thanks Caz. I've warmed him up with a nice real coffee. Think i'll come back from lunch with a bag of doughnuts and make it a jolly event (ie train my managing director to associate me with doughnuts and good, sweet things).

I don't know about anyone else, and it seems crazy to write this when i think back to being say only 3 or 4 weeks preg and desperate for the time to pass to 12 weeks, but the days are now really flying by. I keep thinking silly things like 'in a week i'll be nearly 4 months pregnant' which sounds terribly, erm, concrete and definitely happening.

I hope everyone is feeling good now? My hair and nails are going like the clappers and spots have cleared up for now. I only got htem on the left hand side of my face. Did anyone else experience this?!!

Neuro · 04/07/2007 12:12

Awen can't you go with him to Japan? You could have birthday (green) tea.

I am nuts about Japan, love it love it love it!

Mrswizz · 04/07/2007 12:38

Thanks Suey and Housmum, I'm going to ignore my Mum's comments from now on. Lesson learned.

And I really sympathise with you Suey over the tube seat thing. It gets to me too. I am amazed at how few people give up their seats. I used to before I was pg.

CodPeace · 04/07/2007 13:19

Cant go with him, his work sending him business class (o-la-la) which is over £2500 just for flight. DOnt think Me and ds could go too.

Post here after you tell your boss and let us know how it goes x

Housemum · 04/07/2007 13:25

Woah, Awen - a name with the C word in?? Thought they were coveted by you-know-who! (Though you can type...)

Mad4girls - DD2 is 4, so will be 5 by the time they start to share a room. She's excited by the thought at the mo - the reality may be different!!

BeckleSpeckledCod · 04/07/2007 13:26

You still have your Cod coat on Awen!

(it is you isn't it?)

BeckleSpeckledCod · 04/07/2007 13:27

Oops! So do I!

MamaMaiasaura · 04/07/2007 13:30

Am back. I can type mostly but sometimes I have a cod moment.

BecklePhoenixBird · 04/07/2007 13:32

Once saw a comment from Cod replying to someone saying she could't spell

'cna spell, cna't tyep'

or something like that - class!
