  • feeling them move!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Neuro · 03/07/2007 16:52

OK, thanks to Suey2 i have been sitting up straight, no crossed legs at desk. Also when walking to and from work (about 20/25 mins) have held tummy in pretending i have an invisible bit of string holding it all in. So thanks Suey2 keep 'em coming! I've got over an hour left til i leave work but am working out what to have for tea. The thinking goes:
If i do those sets of Clam thingies, then i'm allowed a tin of macca cheese!
But if i don't do them then i have to have salad. Mad? moi?!
Oh and i haven't bought anything. My mum brought me back a really sweet unisex outfit from France a week ago and IT IS SO SMALL AND SWEET!!! ARRGGHHH it made me go all wobbly. But other baby stuff isn't making me particulary fluffy.
Is there a good list anywhere of what I really need?
Thanks

re. annoying mums, mine hasn't so much got rose-tinted specs as complete black-out goggles, and denies being able to remember a thing about either of her pregnancies, which really used to upset me (didn't she, like, care or anything? says 14 year old self). I think know she must have done a jedi mind trick on herself to block out the nasty bits and accidentally got rid of all the good stuff too.
hopefully this month will see the good stuff starting to come through for everybody - i'm feeling loads better for one (no more ms. so-sick-can-only-be-nice person, hurrah).

heard hb this morning with mw - only 145 bpm is that boy or girl style?

anyone else getting nasty stabbing pains low down at sides of stomach? mw unconcerned, but it was really bad yesterday. am told is round ligament pain, and it will go away after 24 weeks. so that's only in two months time them. oh good!

dundeemarmalade · 03/07/2007 17:09

neuro - we've been wondering what we'll actually need too. suspect is like those 'what you need to the perfect wedding' type lists that appear in magazines, that reckon you need to fork out thousands, when all you actually need is you, dp, registrar and champagne. have heard very different things from different people i.e. some people manage with almost no bits and pieces, putting baby to sleep in shoe-box/drawer/handbag, whereas others get the whole of john lewis' baby department just in case. hmm.

thelady · 03/07/2007 17:14

Needs vs. wants. Oh yes indeed!

I think the absolute minimum is:
Something for baby to wear (about 7 sets of basic vest/babygro/jumper type stuff)
Something for baby's bottom to wear (nappies!) and somewhere to do the changing (towel, changing mat, ??)
Something to feed baby (breast or bottle-feeding supplies)
Somewhere for baby to sleep (crib/basket/cot with bedding)
Somewhere for baby's stuff to go (drawers, wardrobe, ??)
Some way of transporting baby (car seat if you drive, lie-flat pram if you walk, sling if you're strong!)
Some way to keep baby clean (baby bath/washing up bowl, towels, cloths, muslins whatever)

No, I've no experience, but I am completely broke (neither of us has made any money in the past 3 years) and I've been doing a lot of reading.

Anyone spot any gaps?

Neuro · 03/07/2007 17:18

A very nice friend and extremely organised person has just emailed me a simple word document with what you need to take to hospital, your stay, labour, even going home clothes, what you need for baby immediately and whatever else you'll need for first 6 months.
I don't know if i can attach it to my profile, but will give it a go.
Now i am more of a shoestring girl, so there's def a few things on there that i shan't buy, eg baby bath - i think that's what sinks are for! Or maybe new washing up bowls...
Here goes..

Neuro · 03/07/2007 17:20

Riight, i don't have my profile page set up, so I could just paste it in here if anyone wants to see it? then you could c & p it onto your machine.
I'll do it later at home if enough people want a look (don't want to waste thread space or be annoying)

MamaMaiasaura · 03/07/2007 17:41

feel better as midwife called. LOts of reassurances that this aches are very normal at this stage etc. Said that if persists to do a wee sample but in meantime drink lots of water and cranberry juice

Just relieved to have spoken to her about it. She was really nice and didnt make me feel silly at all.

PLUS it'll be winter so baby will need to be wrapped up well.
That big list is scaring me. I'm off to eat macaroni cheese
g'night all X

Housemum · 03/07/2007 18:06

If you are near an IKEA that's good for cheap stuff - baby baths about £5 compared to £15+ everywhere else but you don't need one - sink or large washing up bowl is fine.

Don't buy paper pants - they sell them next to maternity pads - buy really cheap pants from QS or BHS or somewhere - comfort then throw away if you need to rather than the paper ones which feel awful.

Maternity towels can be a bit of a rip-off - extra long extra absorbent normal ones are better and cheaper.

Sure I can think of more but dinner's ready...

suey2 · 03/07/2007 18:53

Feeling a bit pissed off. I think i look pretty PG now. On the tube, i was knackered after a full day of treating patients. No- one offered me a seat and when someone got up to leave the tube someone else virtually pushed me out of the way to sit in the seat. It was only when i grumbled that she acknowledged the belly and said 'sorry i didn't know' and gave me her seat. Maybe it isn't that obvious but don't people realise just how rubbish you feel?

Housemum · 03/07/2007 19:22

Muslins - for those who have never heard of these they are brilliant - usually near the nappies, they are just squares of cloth which are great for mopping up sick & dribble (you will be doing a lot of this). Get a pack of about a dozen - always have some with you - put them over your shoulder when burping, use for wiping chins and faces. ESSENTIAL!

Top & tail bowl - essential to use separate water for face and bum washing of baby but no need to line Mothercare's coffers for a pretty bowl unless you want to - a couple of old margarine tubs or any plastic bowls marked top and tail will do.

Baby swings - great if you have a colicky baby as it saves your arms BUT they are expensive. We bought a secondhand one for £25 which was great but the motor gave out after a month so not v good value.

Changing tables - good idea to save your back - you can also get cot-top changers if you haven't much room - basically a wooden board to put on top of the cot when changing (NB shove a towel in the cot particularly if you have a boy as a pee fountain into the cot won't be much fun!!). IKEA again for a cheap version that you could put a couple of plastic boxes on and use as toy storage later.

Neuro · 03/07/2007 19:39

Poor Suey2. Not surprised really, lots of the public are dumb asses! I was on a bus last week and a guy on crutches got on, i looked around and decided to stand up and offer my seat. No one else did though, they all looked out the window the lazy sods.

Re: lists of stuff, i feel a bit overwhellmed by it all today, even the list i pasted up. Suddenly it all is sounding a bit real and SCARY. Panicking quietly today. Still, all women go through.

mad4girls · 03/07/2007 20:13

hello ladies
wow a new thread already cnat believe time is wizzing by

sorry been quiet for a few days have been keeping up with everyone, but feeling really hormonal, naggy, moany and tearful so thought i wouldnt inflict it on you all as i would have just been wallowing to be honest.

anyway as for buying things thats something thats really cheered me up, i am the same as caz 10 and wont have much money coming in when lo arrives so buying early

already have -
pram
bouncy chair
few clothes
bath support
carrier
highchair-bought off ebay but lady says been damaged in floods so had to refund
blankets + sheets
sleeping bag
hooded towels

but remeber i am mega organised boardering on ocd, i get very anxious when pregnant about things not being ready when lo arrives, comes from being homeless till i was 8 mths pregnant with dd1.

and some bits i bought today at local flea market
buggy board
moses basket+stand

i need buggy board as we dont drive only use it when shopping in town so i know where dd2 is and because we walk to car boot etc which is miles away.
the moses basket is gorgeous heffalump design, and guesss what got them all for £15 bargain or what

so cheered up tons now

housemum- wow so jealous about your dd being in magazine, ive never done anything like that, you must be so proud

BeachBunni · 03/07/2007 21:01

Aaaah starting to panic. Everyone is so organised. I think I'll make up a list tonight and scare dp too.

Glad someone mentioned muslins. I've heard they are the best thing since sliced bread. Where do you get them? I have looked everywhere and can't find them.

Bouncingturtle · 03/07/2007 21:16

I haven't even started cleaning out the spare room to convert it to a nursery yet!

I too admit to sticking out tummy. And having very sore boobies - feels like they're are being pinched all the time
Had odd pains in tummy, but deffo think I feel baby bouncing aroung

macdoodle · 03/07/2007 21:24

My god I have done nothing only just seen midwife for first time (she was not impressed I am nearly 15 weeks) but had already had nuchal scan privately....
Was planning to move but now might just convert kitchen etc as no interest in my house...so not done any baby planning at all - isn't it a bit early ???

mad4girls · 03/07/2007 21:38

beachbunni-i saw some in boots althoug they were either pink or blue i think

mohercare must sell them what else are they there for

personally will just chop up some old sheets and towels as we having a clear out anyway but its true they are handy

i really love kushies shaped burp pads they fit your shoulder and made of lovely absorbant material, but just a want rather than nessacity so will do it on the cheap this time

feel really sorry for this lo, s/he wont even have its own room amongst a million other things that the other 2 had, but cant afford/dont need this time

does that sound silly?

macdoodle · 03/07/2007 21:57

Kitchen roll did me as good as muslins don't need washing much cheaper and I just left a roll in every room

Housemum · 03/07/2007 22:53

Muslins:

Mothercare

Boots

Blooming Marvellous

I'm sure there are plenty more places... (I need to get out more)

Housemum · 03/07/2007 22:55

Mad4girls - my 3rd won't have its own room either - only the oldest will have that luxury as she's so much older (14) - have moved DD2's room around already so she won't really realise it - she has a little desk in there that she will probaby outgrow over the next year - when that's out of her room the cot will go in that space. Just need to be really careful about where she stores the small toys (babies and Polly Pocket don't mix!)

Housemum · 03/07/2007 22:56

Also, if no3 is a girl it will have so many hand-me-downs from no2!

suey2 · 04/07/2007 07:58

morning all,
sorry for moody post.
I haven't got anything yet: am hoping to inherit stuff from pals.
we are trying to sell our flat so it looks like a showhome at present: no room for baby stuff: plan to get what i havent inherited when i start my maternity leave.
Isn't it FANTASTIC that alan johnson is free?

MotherofZ · 04/07/2007 08:36

Ohhhh felt a few flutters for the first time yesterday - really exciting!!

Awen - glad you are feeling much better.
Neuro - thanks for the list, very useful!
We've got most of the main things saved from when DD was born, so only need to buy a few bits and bobs - have put a bit of money aside each month, so I can buy everything in one go later. Like Housemum, I've saved DD clothes from before, so if I have another one, she'll have those. Babies grow out of clothes so quickly, so trying to save money where I can!
Stomach is starting to 'pop' out now and looking like a preggy instead of fat..! Plus boobs are starting to get bigger.....
