My hospital has banned maternal request CS. My consultant appt on Tuesday is going to be interesting.

www.jack2.com/news/oxfordshire-news/pregnant-women-refused-requests-for-caesareans-at-john-radcliffe/

Bizawit · 26/01/2019 13:34

@Torsz my 24 wk is the week after next, so maybe I will ask!

@toomanyflatwhites I'm under Chelsea & West. I don't think I would chose an elective C section, I would like a VB if possible, but I still think that's appalling that they refuse to do it at St. Thomas Angry. Don't know about C&W's policy. Surely it should be every woman's choice how she wants to give birth?? (But I suppose I haven't read their reasons...)

Bizawit · 26/01/2019 13:42

@Fabuluce - Ughh. The hospital's response in that article is so condescending and paternalistic "all requests are considered..." Requests?? Surely a woman's choices about how she wants/ feels able/ comfortable to give birth should be considered more than a "request" that ought to be "considered".

Kescilly · 26/01/2019 14:18

I’m terrified of childbirth but I’m equally scared of requesting a c-section. My midwife has definitely not discussed any of it with me, we barely speak before I’m out the door again! I wish I had someone I could just sit and talk to about pregnancy and birth.

I would like a repeat section and have made the request to the consultant who seemed open to it. She's booked me into a birth choices clinic so that I "have all the information" before making a choice about VBAC or elective section. I've got another appointment with her at 36 weeks to give her my final decision. I'm 100% sure I don't want a VBAC because the pain of labour was so excruciating last time but will go along to the birth choices clinic anyway as a tick box exercise

Bimbabo · 26/01/2019 14:40

That’s ridiculous. Another example of women being told what they can and can’t do with their own bodies. Shameful. I’m lucky that I’m happy to speak my mind without worrying about what people think of me.

Bizawit · 26/01/2019 14:42

@Kescilly my friend who is also preg but a couple of months further along has been doing hypnobirthing. She reckons it really helps with the fear around giving birth. I was thinking of trying it (apparently it’s a little expensive though..)

Spargle · 26/01/2019 15:38

Age at due date: 38 (and 6 days!)
Sex: hoping to find out on 4th Feb
Location: Chesterfield (or thereabouts)

@Bizawit I’m going to look into hypnobirthing. I have a friend who said it was the best investment she made with her first. Think the course around here costs about £200. I also got a book out of the library without looking very hard, and it turns out it’s a hypnobirthing book, which is interesting. It will also be interesting to see if it helps with the hypnobirthing course and eventual result.

hexagon01 · 26/01/2019 17:01

I found hypnobirthing quite helpful last time - the breathing techniques mainly. I ended up with a section for other reasons (infected placenta and baby who wouldn’t get in the right position) but I laboured until I was fully dilated and pushed for 2 hours with only gas and air and I was really calm for the whole time because of hypnobirthing/the stuff I did on my Daisy course.

stellarfox · 26/01/2019 17:42

We’re doing a hypnobirthing course end of Feb so I’ll let you all know how it goes. I’m more scared about having to have a csection than giving birth as I really don’t like the idea of having surgery. Really hoping the hypnobirthing will help me feel calm going into labour, whatever happens!

SassehMonsta · 26/01/2019 17:47

Age at due date: 29
Predicted sex: Male
Location: Northampton.

Baby will be here mid-may. I'll stick around.

lstef · 26/01/2019 18:08

Another here terrified of surgery - so am hoping for VB as long as leading twin is head down - I think my consultant said if leading twin is breech then she would "advise" a section. I'm not sure I heard that right though (i.e. if I have a choice or not). I am also scared of induction because of the risk of interventions - so I want to go into labour naturally so all the hormones are working as they should - oxytocin etc. The thought of struggling with BF scares me (as in not being able to) - personally I don't want to feed formula if I can help it, and that is more likely to be a struggle if c section or preemie or whatever.

and given all this the twins will decide for me and I might just have to go with the flow and hope for the best!

@Bizawit - I bought the positive birth company (hypnobirthing) digital pack a couple of days ago when they had it on promo - it has loads of videos and mp3s - full price is £35 - I can't afford a £200 course, and nor can I really afford NCT classes. I havent watched any yet but heard good things on MN and other places.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 26/01/2019 18:18

@Kescilly I'm flat out terrified of every single way this baby could come out of me. My friend on her second baby recommended I read Ina May Garten and "The Positive Birth Book". I found them both so horrific that the made me cry for hours and gave me nightmares.

I'm pretty much resigned to being scarred for life by this whole experience Sad I can't get my head around how so many people aren't scared!

I hope you find someone to listen to you - I can't believe your midwife isn't more helpful.

Heyha · 26/01/2019 18:47

@allfurcoatnoknickers me too if I'm honest. I was looking at newborn clothes the other day thinking "something THAT size has got to get out of me 😱" but I guess it's too late now and people generally try to go back for more so it must be worth it...

hexagon01 · 26/01/2019 18:51

Giving birth is definitely the most intense thing you will ever do, it won’t be pleasant but it’s also different for everyone and lots of people do have positive experiences. I know some of these people! My best friend had the dream water birth - I don’t want to downplay her experience and say it was perfect, birthing a baby is always messy and scary and hard but she shows that it’s not all horror stories.

@istef I have another friend who vaginally delivered her twins and is still breastfeeding them 15 months or so later. And on the other hand I had a c section and breastfed my son until last month when he was 19 months - it was a difficult start but we got there. Just to give you some positivity :)

allfurcoatnoknickers · 26/01/2019 18:51

@Heyha Glad to know I'm not the only one! I honestly didn't give it much thought before being pregnant, but this entire pregnancy has been so difficult and unpleasant that I've lost faith in my body and the whole gestation/Labour/Birth process.

coastergirl · 26/01/2019 19:07

I think I've only been asked about birth because of having had a c-section last time. I don't recall having any opportunities to discuss it last time until I went to my consultant appointment in a state and begged! I was expecting a real battle but they really listened. I was honestly terrified of the surgery too, but it was definitely the lesser of two evils for me.

MadeInCornwallx3 · 26/01/2019 20:08

Hey guys! Place marking 😊

I also love a stat - so please geek away!

My particulars are:

Age at due date; 35
Sex; Girl
Location; Cornwall

Heyha · 26/01/2019 20:12

See I'm the opposite in some ways @allfurcoatnoknickers I've had such a straightforward pregnancy so far I keep thinking I can't possibly keep being this lucky, so something is bound to be unpleasant later on. Irrational I know!

socktastic · 26/01/2019 20:34

I'm pretty worried about the birth this time too.

Last time I was induced owing to hypertension. One they broke my waters though, he was out in 40 minutes. I thought it was a breeze and did it all on gas and air. DH didn't want to tell me much... turns out it was so quick because I transitioned from 2cm to 10cm in a matter of minutes, Ds heart rate went down to 19 and he had to be suction cupped out of there! (He had the biggest rounds at bruise on his head for a good 3 weeks)

So I'm expecting this time.round I'll either be induced again for similar reasons or it will go on forever and because it was so quick and "easy" last time, I won't know what's hit me!

Napssavelives · 27/01/2019 05:45

I wasn’t too worried about the both after having 2 very straight forward delivery. Both pretty quick then the midwife said 3rd labours can be longer and more tricky. Not helpful!

I woke up with a sore throat so I’m really hoping I won’t end up bedridden for weeks like I usually am.

But in the meantime I am planting myself in front of the TV and entering in everyone’s data. Please let me know if you have updates or want to add in your information!

Also thank you to everyone offering reassurances and suggestions on how to deal with the fear of childbirth. I did look into hypnobirthing but it is too much money for something that might be useless. I might look into that online version though!
